The mega class-action discrimination suit against Shoney's in the 90's appears to have been overshadowed by the better publicized case against Denny's occuring about the same time. But the flagrant and pervasive discrimination shown by Shoney's management toward its own staff is shocking stuff (Supervisiors were told to blacken the "o" in "Shoneys" to identify job applications from minority applicants). Terrific book - it reads like a detective novel and is hard to put down. Well-written and highly recommended.

P.S. Note that this book was first promoted at the top of a well-known commercial publisher's list, but inexplicably dropped before going to press -- presumably due to legal threats from an offended source. It's out of print now; get it if you can!

This book has great information on all the native plants of the Upper Midwest. I found it very entertaining and educational. The only thing I would change about the book is to add color pictures. The drawings are pretty good though.

A very good book.......2007-06-04

Parachuting is an increasingly popular hobby. Indeed, right down the road a piece from where I live is Skydive Chicago, one of the largest skydiving centers in the Midwest. Well, if you are considering doing your first jump, then you *must* get this book. It tells you what will happen on your first jump, gives you easy to learn maneuvers and techniques, even telling you why people jump.

Overall, I found this to be a very good book. The techniques are sound, which is no surprise as the authors are both expert skydivers, and the pictures are well done. And I must say, I really did enjoy the history of parachuting! Overall I found this to be a highly informative read, one that I recommend to anyone thinking about taking the big plunge!

The Sky is Yours to Fly In.......2007-05-05

If I was ever to attempt parachuting, I certainly wouldn't do it without reading this book from cover to cover and committing most of it to memory. The layout is terrific, with lots of photographs and very detailed drawings and diagrams, and it's written in such a simple and direct style that it even makes sense to someone ignorant about skydiving, like me. People who step out of an airplane with a parachute are amazing and courageous, but I'm an acrophobic couch potato that settles for getting my thrills watching others do it (think Keanu and Swayze in "Point Break"), or looking through books like this fantastic manual.

"Parachuting-The Skydiver's Handbook" gives you a little history, starting with Leonardo da Vinci, with the photo of Kathe Paulus from the 1890's quite priceless, through "Your First Jump," "Skydiving Emergencies," with every possible emergency you could ever go through (as the author states, "parachutes are good but not perfect," pg. 142), "Your Freefall Progression" (I love the drawings in this chapter!), and so much more. It has an extensive chapter on equipment as well, and how to use it. There is also an appendix for further information on clubs, books, etc., a glossary, and an index. Dan Poynter and Mike Turoff have done a superb job with this book, which has enough information that even an expert might expect to learn something, and for the novice, don't leave home without it. Keep your eye on the sky, and "Fly with your own wings"!

Want to know about AFF?.......2007-04-11

This book is great for people interested in finding out about AFF (Accelerated Free Fall) as a method of learning to skydive. If you have already completed AFF, the book is not worth it. I would recommend "The Skydiver's Survival Guide."

Good Book.......2006-08-06

Pretty good for a new skydiver, i haven't finished the book yet, but there is a ton of info in this. I ALWAYS run anything i learn or read by my jump master and would recommend you do too before changing any of your emergency steps.

This book is aimed at people a little further in the sport. It discusses each stage of the jump, and has a lot of useful tips and insights about these stages. It will make you a safer skydiver.

I owned this dictionary prior to this purchase but it fell apart. I already knew it to be an excellent dictionary and that has not changed. I would recommend this dictionary to all students of Arabic and Arabic speakers who want to translate into English.

Just as any dictionary would be, this is very helpful. I used stickers to separate each letter. Sort of like what people do with their bibles to separate one book from another. That saves me a lot of time when looking up a word. Arabic is such a difficult language to learn. It's not always easy to use the dictionary, but I think this is a very good quality dictionary.

The Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic.......2007-07-09

This is NOT the dictionary for those looking for a quick method of translating Arabic to English or vice versa. Rather, it is based on the way the Arabic language is structured, with the three root character groupings that comprise perhaps 95% of all words. Based on this fact, it is very close to being a "perfect" solution for looking up definitions. Those seeking a quick answer to the "how do I say....?" question are better off getting one of those pocket guides that give you transliterations in English. If you are serious about learning the Arabic Language, the Hans Wehr book is the pretty much today's "bible" for Mondern Standard Arabic.

This dictionary is oriented toward those who wish to learn the root patterns of Arabic and is essencially useless unless you are willing to invest the effort to figure out how it works. If you do, however, it is fenominal! Many phrases I have been completely stumped by have been explained clearly in this dictionary. I wish I could find something as good for the reverse translation (English to Arabic). Do know that this dictionary is just what it says: Arabic to English only.

This is "the" dictionary for serious students, but it breaks my heart to see people paying so much for it, when it's available in the Middle East in HC for around $15.

Get the Paperback.......2004-12-26

My mother bought this for me for Christmas. She used the "available new and used" section to get it a little cheaper. She ended up paying $160 or so. When I put this on my wish list I thought that this hardcover version would be the Arabic-English/English-Arabic, considering that it was $175 and the paperback of the Arabic-English only was available for $45. As it turns out, this is only the hardcover of the Arabic-English only. So for one, my mother paid an additional $115 for only the hardcover version of a book that I could have gotten in the paperback for $45. I still do not have the English-Arabic of the Hans Wehr edition.

His Greatest Challenge has an interesting plot. The story gets off to a quick start. It's blessed with good writing and realistic characters. It's a little to simple for adults and but most teens and older children will enjoy it.
