For many years, law enforcement administrators, government officials, and researchers have explored the possibility of professionalizing law enforcement agencies and their officers. Some have called for mandatory college education requirements while others have argued for the formation of a national police force. In 1979, police practitioners from various law enforcement executive organizations met to develop a process to professionalize police agencies by instituting standards covering the wide range of police functions. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) was born. This book describes the results of a study that evaluated the impact of CALEA accreditation on specific personnel administration practices in municipal police departments. The author compares accredited and non-accredited departments for personnel practices including procedures for officer selection, promotion, and the integration of formal education requirements.

During the 20th century, two revolutions swept rural Mexico: the Mexican Revolution and the Green Revolution. In both, "revolutionaries" promised to address the problems of rural poverty and underdevelopment. The Mexican Revolution led to a significant agrarian reform and created the State and elite that governed Mexico since the 1920s. The Green Revolution helped increase Mexican agricultural production substantially, and in 1970 it won a Nobel Peace Prize for Norman Borlaug, who bred dwarf hybrid wheat. Mexican agronomists played significant roles in both revolutions, but neither revolution brought prosperity to peasant farmers. This book examines the history of Mexican agronomy and agronomists to shed new light on the role of science in the Mexican Revolution, the origins of the worldwide Green Revolution, and general issues about the nature of the professions, the impact of professionals' ties to politics and the state, and discourses between members of Mexico's urban middle class and peasantry. Cotter also analyzes the impact of foreign models of science in Mexico, the history of U.S.-Mexican cooperation in the agricultural sciences, and the factors that led Mexico to seek scientific assistance from the United States. In a broad way, he reveals new aspects of the ongoing struggle for the right to define "modernity" and "progress" in rural Mexico, and offers new explanations for the failure of many of the State's efforts to assist peasant farmers.

This book, from this Yankee fan's perspective is a waste of time. Author could have done better with 25 reasons to love the Yanks, instead of digging and scratching for the additional 76. The 10 reasons to hate the Red Sox were even more lame. The book itself is very small - too small in size/scale. Go Yanks!

I gave this book to my boyfriend for Christmas, and he really enjoys it. It is more of a coffee table book. Each reason for loving the Yankees is about a sentence and is accompanied by a picture. The book, however, should have more about hating the Red Sox!

An interesting fact book.......2006-01-11

I got this book for Christmas. It makes a nice gift for a Yankee fan. It has a lot of interesting facts dating back to the beginning of the team. Also, the photos are pretty cool. I wish it was longer though. For those interested in reading a full book about the recent dynasty years, check out "The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty".

in addition to the advantages that others have pointed out, such as the examples provided, there is another plus which I don't think anyone else has mentioned. The book gives examples not only of the verb in use, but also of nouns and vocab that are related to the verb in question. So for example, for the word 'Anadir' (which means 'to add'), the book gives sample sentences containing the phrase 'por anadidura' (in addition:') and the noun 'anadido' (addition). These supporting phrases and vocab are every bit as important as learning to conjugate the root verb itself, and I have yet to find a verb book that does this in its sample sentences.

This book was recommended to me by my Spanish Teacher and it is a really good resource to use while learning Spanish or just to use for reference. I recommend the 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs to all interested in Spanish.

Side-By-Side Comparison of 501 Spanish Verbs vs. The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs (555) .......2006-02-22

As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review learning Spanish courses, books, and software that are listed on Amazon. I am also a native Spanish speaker and a professional private Spanish instructor.

At first glance, it seems that Big Red 555 has 54 more fully conjugated verbs than 501. But Big Red 555 actually has about 2,300 more verbs than 501. That's because Big Red 555 has a Spanish Verb Index with more than 2,300 verbs that are cross-referenced to the page number to another verb in Big Red 555 that follows the same conjugation pattern. If we judged the books solely on the number of the verbs that each book contains, Big Red 555 would clearly be the winner.

Another section that I liked about Big Red 555 is that it contains a section with the Top 50 Verbs. These Top 50 Verbs which were selected on frequency of use are also cross-referenced to the page number in Big Red 555 where you will find the same verb fully conjugated. This section can be very helpful because it is unlikely that a reader will study the entire 500 plus verbs of either book. But a reader may study and practice the Top 50 most commonly used verbs and learn how to conjugate them.

Perhaps the feature that makes Big Red 555 standout from 501 is that in the "555 Fully Conjugated Verbs" section, the former tends to give more examples of uses and expressions of the verbs than you would find in the latter.

But in order to learn proper verb conjugation it takes lots of study and practice. 501 provides the reader with close to 50 pages of "Verb Drills and Test With Answers." On the other hand, Big Red 555 only had 5 pages of exercises.

Both books contain easy-to-view summary sections of verb formation and uses of each verb tenses, including many examples. However, Big Red 555 only covers verb conjugation in the "summary" section while 501 covers not only verb conjugation in the "summary" section but also direct and indirect pronouns and other aspects of Spanish grammar.

One feature that I like about both books is that they both contain an English-Spanish Verb Index that allows the reader to look up the 555 or 501 words by their English meaning.

501 does have several more additional or supplemental sections than Big Red 555. To name a few, 501 has a section on idiomatic expressions. 501 also has two "tourist attraction" sections in the back pages. One section consists of more than thirty practical situations you may find yourself in while visiting Latin America or Spain. The other section gives the reader many popular phrases, words, expressions, abbreviations, signs, and notices in Spanish and English in one alphabetical listing. This provides the reader with the ability to look in one section as opposed to two when looking for a particular word. For the sake of convenience, cognates and near-cognates are also reduced to one entry in this section.

Considering that the books are relatively inexpensive ($10 or $11), you may want to invest in both the Champion and the Challenger and then decide which one you find most helpful. You will find both books on my book shelf. I have used either or both as a reference source when preparing lessons for my private
students.

Excellent reference book for verbs!.......2005-10-28

Mastering verb conjugations is essential to learning Spanish. Anytime that I need to find a verb form, I generally will find it in the Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs. The layout and format are so easy to follow. The Big Red Book even has separate conjugation tables for the reflexive verbs, with and without the reflexive pronouns. Plus there is a cross reference list for other verbs with the same conjugated forms as one of the 555 Verbs. I happen to own The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs, 501 Spanish Verbs, and 2000 Spanish Verbs. Each text has its strengths, and the price for each is a bargain. You won't go wrong in even buying all three of them. But if I could only choose one book of Spanish verbs to have, the Big Red Book would be the one.

Great book, BAD ENDING!!!.......2007-09-16

Okay, I would like to talk to the author and ask her what the deal was? When I first started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. VERY interesting! Loved the story! Could relate. Loved Josie and the way she could be cool when talking to guys. Loved the use of "You, maybe". That was PRICELESS!! I could never do that! That was so funny. I wish I had the courage to be like that in high school. (I'm 26 now.) Anyway, I really loved reading the book, but I HAVE to say, it's really bugging me. It ended really bad. The book just needs 1 more chapter. I was sooo hoping for Josie to end up with Michael and it would have a wonderful happy ending. I can't believe it ended the way it did. There needs to be a sequal. But then again, it really only needs one more chapter I think, not a whole other book. I'd like to know what the author was thinking in not having a good ending. Real life is too dissapointing as it is, books need to have wonderful happy endings.

YOU, MAYBE is a great book about high school romance. This book really captures how romance in high school can be confusing and heartbreaking, but can also be fun. This book is a page-turner; it keeps you wondering what could possibly happen next.

Josie is a fifteen-year-old girl who is very independent and has never wanted to be anybody's girlfriend. She believes that when you become a couple, you yourself are only half of something and not whole. She's just a regular kid who never understood why they say that these are the best years of your life.

Josie is living her regular life; going to school, trying to make some extra money, hanging out with her friends, and everything else a regular teenager would do. Josie loved hanging out with her best guy friend, Michael. Everything was fine between Josie and her friends. But what happens when she starts to think that she might be falling in love with Carson, a BP (beautiful person), the kind of person she had always hated? What happens when Carson starts to notice her? Carson had previously had a hard time when his first love, Emelina, got accepted to college early and fell in love with an older college boy. Will Carson learn to love Josie and give up on Emelina? And what will happen when a tragic event happens? Will Carson love Josie or break her heart?

To answer all these questions, read this great book.

A story any young woman can relate to.......2006-06-21

"Love is a brat," Josie's new crush, Carson, tells her. "Whatever you don't love, loves you. But whatever you love kicks your butt." Carson Gold isn't just any crush. He's a hot senior who had a very public breakup with his longtime girlfriend, Emelina. He then ran through several girls who Josie scorns as she sees them begging him to take them back at the parties she and her friends crash on weekends.

Josie doesn't believe in love. She's happy hanging out with her two best gal pals, Zandra and Tru, and her longtime best friend Michael. She even enjoys running little kids' birthday parties, doing magic tricks dressed as Tallulah the Clown. Her life is full and uncomplicated. It is true that she and Michael make out frequently, but they're still just friends, she believes.

Things get complicated though when Carson starts noticing Josie. She discovers that even she is not immune to his many charms. Things start out with secret makeout sessions during their free seventh periods. She continues to write songs and make out with Michael, which begins to feel weird.

Carson doesn't call her and they don't really go out. But then he starts getting serious, asking her to be his girlfriend and to stop being with Michael. After some convincing, Josie agrees. She scraps plans for Michael's birthday and starts hanging out with Carson and his popular crowd, which includes his ex-girlfriend.

Soon Josie is changing how she dresses, how she acts, and canceling birthday party gigs to go spend a weekend with Carson at his ex's cabin. Josie tells him about how much she loves him and is even thinking about having sex with Carson, who is pushing her farther than she has ever gone during makeout sessions.

It is during this cabin adventure that Josie is forced to see that these changes are not good and that Carson has not changed from the fickle person she thought she knew. A near tragedy in her family brings Michael back, and she sees him for the valuable friend he is as well.

YOU, MAYBE is for everyone who has had their head turned by the wrong guy.

An okay book.......2006-05-26

This book was okay. I read this book having high expectations for it after how much i love If we kiss by Rachel Vail. To my dissapointment it wasn't as good as i thought it would be. Though i can to relate to losing yourself when you want that one "special" guy to like you, i found the ending of the book to be unsatifactory. I didn't like the ending but otherwise that book was okay. I would recommend reading it maybe, but not buying it personally.

the best book ever about falling in love.......2006-04-26

I absolutely loved this book. It is deep but also funny and so intense. It is about Josie, who has always been strong and smart and comfortable with herself, and how she falls in love with gorgeous, charming Carson -- and throws away everything important to her, trying to keep him. ACK!!!! I know exactly how she feels! Rachel Vail absolutely captures the feelings (fantastic AND devastating) you have when the most important thing in your life is this one special relationship, and even when you KNOW you shouldn't do stuff (call him constantly, IM him, ask him what's wrong, cry in front of him) you just can't help it, you are nuts and obsessed and lost all track of who you used to be. I love Josie. I love this book. It just came out yesterday and my mom got it for me and I read it last night without looking up from it once! I couldn't stop! I just had to find out what happened... and now I can't wait to read it again.
