Customer Reviews:
But what about Google?.......2007-07-12
I have not read this book, but I listened to an interview on Wall Street Journal This Week (podcast). It is sad that corporate and Wall Street has driven the "front line force/employees" to the ground and view employees as a commodity. However, this corporate greed, arrogance and uncaring attitude has promoted one thing - entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, entrepreneurship takes a good amount of capital, something that many employees do not have. Therefore we are stuck with the mercy of our corporate employers, while we pursue the American Dream - the welfare of our family. But that American Dream could also be that you part of, for example, the Google team.
Top-down Management Fails Again!!.......2000-08-06
The author of this book, Dr. Alan Downs, performed corporate downsizings for years and now explains they seldom attain the goals a company wanted.
Dr. Downs explains that, contrary to what we read, life in the workplace is deteriorating for nearly everyone. He explains that greed is the driving force behind company lay-offs and it must be checked. He advocates a new "social contract" between companies and employees.
America's businesses must begin to understand that they are often responsible for the tension in our society that invites the rampant drug use. Top-down, authoritarian, do-it-my way management defies research into human development that has been with us since 1927 when the "halo effect" was discovered. More harmony and less friction is needed between labor and management and this is what Dr. Downs writes about. He states that businesses need "rejuvination, not dismemberment. He is right!!
Many books have been written and studies have been made that show management is not as good as it is cracked up to be and it is time for change. Worker friendly institutions will only be brought about in the 21st Century by managers who know how to inspire workers. Companies who heed this advice, based on sound research will benefit across the board as will communities and the people who work in them.
Dr. Downs book reveals a hidden truth about corporate America that government officials should pay attention to, but they may not as special interest groups are at the very top of these companies that promote this "ugly truth" with large pay checks in the form of political contributions.
If you are a CEO, in high level management, a politician or a union leader, read this book and go to work on correcting this ugly corporate structure sure to play havoc within America sometime in the 21st Century.
Norman Jones, Ed.D author of Performance Management in the 21st Century
Top-down management is rebuffed by Dr, Downs!!.......1999-06-09
In Corporate Executions, Dr. Downs shows how the government and top executives foster top-down management practices that are helping to create unwanted and unneeded tesnion in our country. Years ago it seems that companies had the best interest of communities and employees in mind, but this book dispells that long lost attitude. To his credit, Dr. Down rebukes the downsizing, the re-engineering of companies because he participated in these tragedies and makes recommendations to increase the performance of companies without affecting the morale of people. His book should be read by every politician and every CEO and taken to heart as a measure that would make us a safer, calmer nation. The recommendations of Dr. Downs are even more important than he writes about as I believe he touches upon the attitude of big business that creates tension in our country and delivers a message to young people that the future is going to be a lot rougher on them than the past has been on people in the world of work. Dr. Down's ideas should be put into practice soon, but I fear he is going to be one of many authors who will only be able to set back and say, "See I told you so."
Alan Downs demystifies downsizing.......1997-09-13
Alan Downs knows whereof he speaks when he details the rationale, strategies, and methodology of corporate downsizing in the 90's. His spellbinding expose is written from the standpoint of a converted "corporate reconstructionist," and he pulls no punches. He takes you behind the scenes, into boardrooms, managerial conferences, and strategy meetings, in which employees are little more than pieces of play on a game board, manipulated by corporate henchmen in an attempt to drain every last drop of profit from an undervalued workforce.
Mr. Downs' insightful, caring treatment of the workers' modern day employment dillemma both comforts and informs. If nothing else, the reader leaves with a greater understanding of why he or she has been buffeted about in the economic storm that has characterized the greedy 90's. Such understanding allows the victim of a layoff to salvage an othewrwise devistated sense of self worth, knowing that they are not alone -- that the fruits of "profits before people" ideology are widespread.
Corporate Executions is also recommended to the thoughtful exec who realizes that short-term profits derived from a decimated workforce are over-shadowed by negative factors engendered by trimming the sinew with the fat. Low worker morale, lost job knowledge, confusion as to job responsibilities, a general lowering of work accuracy, etc. plague workers to the detriment of the stated corporate mission and precious bottom line. Alan Downs' suggestions on how to structure a kinder, gentler, and, yes, more profitable company are well worth the read

Book Description
"This massive and authoritative Master Blaster book is the greatest bodybuilding book ever written, primarily because it is firmly based on the training principles of the Weider System of Bodybuilding, which have been followed by literally every bodybuilder in the modern history of the sport. I began developing my Weider System back in the 1930s and continue to refine and add new Weider Training Principles to it. You can rely on the information I present in this book to improve your physique. Good luck!" -- Joe Weider
On Instinctive Training "One of the most fundamental secrets of successful bodybuilding is getting to know your body and how it reacts to various training and nutritional practices. Unless you have finely honed your instinctive training ability, it will take many weeks, even months, to evaluate each experiment. It definitely pays to master the Weider Instinctive Training Principle." -- Franco Columbo, two-time Mr. Olympia
On Progression "The key to building massive, powerful muscles is to doggedly increase the training weights you use. But it is only good to increase training poundage if you do so in perfect form. There is a direct correlation between the amount of weight you use with perfect biomechanics in an exercise and the mass of muscles that move that weight." -- Lee Haney, three-time Mr. Olympia
On Muscle Confusion "Once I reached the advanced level of bodybuilding and started entering competitions, I discovered that I quickly became bored with a set training program. I began to use the Weider Muscle Confusion Principle, changing to a new and more challenging routine every time I came into the gym to bomb a particular body part." -- Lou Ferrigno
On Supersets "Since supersets constitute a big jump in training intensity, I always tell bodybuilders new to the Weider Supersets Training Principles to experiment with supersets, compounding movements for the biceps and triceps, or forearm flexors and forearm extensors." -- Albert Beckles, IFBB World Pro Grand Prix Champion

Dedicated.......2007-05-24
Being a MAJOR gym rat i have always looked for new angles at which to improve my workouts and my knowledge. My first peice of literature that actually brought tried and tested full proof results was The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding : The Bible of Bodybuilding, Fully Updated and Revised. I bought Joe Weider's "Ultimate Bodybuilding" thikning that since he trained Arnold for a breif period there might be overlapping information between the two books and few things that might have been left out. As far as a walk through, if you know absolutely nothing about a gym, i mean dont even know what a Bar-bell looks like this book will tell you. It is very repeatative, very dumbed down, has to many pictures and is hard to process article information due to the constant citations from interviews with Pros. Up until the advanced training the book holds little value...
BUT! if you are an advanced body builder and need specific info on how to increase your mass, learn overtraining and treat injury then buy this book. The exercise routines are incredibly detailed and very informative, but holds value only to those who understand how to apply these workouts to their already rigorous routines. Part III and IV are the only chapters worth studying, all else is time better spent in the gym.
P.S. You will NEVER get as big as the men in these books that are pictured, it is fact and can only acheive this through Anabolic steroids but that does not deem any peice of lituarature useless. Dont let something like this detour you from ultimate knowledge or health.
Bodybuilding for the Thinker.......2007-04-10
Learn the secrets used by bodybuilders worldwide in this book. Also find out why some techniques work, and others don't.
The Ultimate Bodybuilding Book.......2007-03-28
"Advanced bodybuilders often increase training intensity by decreasing rest intervals between sets." It is this kind of insight and personal experience that makes this book more than just a boring "how to" book. This massive and authoritative book of the principles of bodybuilding is the greatest informational book on the sport ever written. This is primarily because it is based on the principles and insight of Joe Weider, an icon to musclemen everywhere. The author goes into specific detail on techniques and principles that have been used by literally every bodybuilder in the modern history of the sport. Plus, he introduces the human aspect - he discusses his past failures and successes. It is bodybuilding for the thinking man, because it explains the whys and wherefores, and exactly how your muscles respond when you do certain things to them. I really suggest this book to read if you are interested in the sport of bodybuilding. It is one you can definitely rely on to improve your physique!
Very useful.......2006-11-21
I actually used to carry this book with me to the gym. It's that helpful, and it covers just about anything you can think of, including diet. Unlike all those books and magazines today that are strictly all about being GQ in the gym, and edit and rewrite their articles just to make a buck, this book covers the down-and-dirty, all-original methods of improving, building, and maintaining your body. One of the better bodybuilding books of yesteryear, coming from the one who knows best, Joe Weider.
Great reference for anyone serious about bodybuilding.......2006-07-14

Fair on nutrition and exercise, good on stretch.......2004-06-06
I approached this book with reservation, because the front cover shows a young man (with hunched upper back) and a young woman, which gave me the feeling of some inexperienced folks having fun in writing without being serious. I paid $5.88 for the book after I enjoyed reading the nutrition and the stretch chapters and was convinced that the book format was simple. The authors do not claim to be licensed medical professionals but presented very extensive nutritional information, which might not be very perfect or even correct, yet extensive anyway.
I was uncomfortable with the extensive list of references that was not cited duly when the authors offer opinions. The excessive length of the reference list indicates that the author is either exaggerating or disingenuous. However, these non-medical authors do not play the deceptive games of Dr. Atkin or Dr. Phil. They merely state what they believe with some air of naivety. For example, they use the term "good" for many medical conditions that are required for a fit person, such as: good heart rate, good muscle speed-strength, good muscle power, good bone health, etc. which lead one to believe that the authors are not in depth in medical knowledge. The authors coin the term "dynatrition" and define it in five steps, which do not serve any purpose other than inventing the wheels of nutrition anew.
The authors are reasonable on the progressive planning of developing strength by training that starts by 2 to 7 sessions per week, on many months of incremental progression. They are also rational on prescribing modest dieting routines. The major drawback of their exercise strategy is the isolation approach. The photographs of exercises show a muscular man with stiff joints (cannot straighten elbows in shoulder press, cannot flex shoulders in front squat) and a proportionally fit woman with high flexibility and strength. The woman trainee does all the stretch exercises and the Power Clean with perfectly elevated shoulders (when the bar is shelved on the chest) while the male trainee does all the traumatic exercises with poor form and stiff posture. This trend (of women training wisely by balancing stretch, form, and overall performance versus guys training to gain size at the expense of flexibility and cardiaopulomnary fitness) constitues an epidemic in the strength training arena.
Undoubtedly, this book is much better than "Body for Life" by Bill Phillips, although both books are structured similarly (a man and a woman trainees performing the exercises, both are young and overconfident in tackling specialized fields, both depict exercise figures in the same format of weight training of regional muscles without concern for compound exercises). Yet, this book ventures into the nutritional issues more aggressively and rationally.
More of a nutritional book for bodybuilding.......2004-01-10
Bottom line is, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY....if you are looking for a good bodybuilding exercise book without the nutrition stuff, you better stick with Arnold's Modern Bodybuilding Encyclopedia because you will be disappointed if you are looking for a good Joe Weider's training book ...I was not impressed with the muscles exercise section....only basic exercises are covered and they are described very vaguely....doesn't mention machine exercises at all....Weider Training techniques are covered very concisely....the nutritional section of the book is the strongest part of this book (a piece of work)...it covers everything from what to eat, when to eat and how to eat...very detailed guidelines on caloric and protein intakes per body weight, even tells you what foods to eat in order to lose or gain weight and build muscle with an astonishing detail...a complete overview of every single nutrient that your body produce and use to build muscles....it also covers all nutritional supplements out there in the market from vitamins, minerals and aminoacids.... If you are looking for a good nutritional reference to build muscles and strenght by eating correctly, this is the book you are looking for!....I guess bodybuilding nutritional books are so underrated that folks don't pay much attention to them...no wonder, this book sell at a bargain price...for what this book is worth, get it fast....this will make a good addition to your collection!
The Edge by Weider et al........2003-08-02
This is an excellent work. It covers the basic weight training
exercises in the gym together with the nutritional dimension
involved in developing the body . For instance, the author
discusses alkalinizers to maintain pH/ (acid/base) balance.
In addition, he reviews the role of bioflavinoids, biotin,
bromelain (digestion) and Co Q 10-antioxidants. He describes
pertinent exercises for the head/neck (stretches), lower back
(extensions), mid-section (incline-sit-ups), bench press for
the chest and lateral pull-downs for the upper back. He
recommends slow inducers for insulin production; such as,
soy protein, peanuts, lentils, apples, yogurt and skim milk.
The work is a fairly complete rendition for maintaining
good health and muscle tone. This program may be best done
with the assistance of a personal trainer.
Excellent Resource.......2003-05-01
This is the book I've been waiting for! While the exercise component at the front of the book was a little elementary for me (I've been training for three years), the Dynatrition section provided answers to many many questions I've had, and in an easily digested manner. Wonderful.
Disappointing and not for everyone.......2003-02-02
I disagree with the reviews above. I feel this book is really confusing. Ive been weight training, on and off, for 7 years at least. Due to lack of progress and chronic shoulder injuries I was forced to rethink my training program and start from scratch; back to the basics.
The book is basically split up as follows:
1) Basics: make up of muscles, stretching, Reps, Sets
2)Set programs A, B, C, D Starting with program A for beginners and ending with D for athletes.
3)Exercises: The above programs contain a number of recommended exercises done over a certain time period. this section explains how the exercises in the above programs are performed.
4)A whole section on nuitrtion: the basics, what kind of diet to maintain according to the type of sports youre in, and a bit about supplements.
Now i personally had no problems till i reached the set programs section. Personally i was hoping the book would teach me how to tailor programs for my own needs. I was more than happy to do set programs, except for the fact that the book was very vague in a few areas. For example, how many sets should one do for each exercise performed. To say that athletes can do such and such number of sets and that beginners should do so and so isn't very helpful for someone trying to get back into training. Plus there is no real mention of whether or not one should incrementally increase weights from set to set. I mean does one stick to one workload weight or increase as one goes on in the same exercise?
I don't know. This maybe a good book for some but it definitely left me more confused than I was to begin with. This is not a book that can be used to tailor your programs at all, which is what I was looking for. Out of fairness I cant say that the set programs don't work as I haven't tried them out. This is the first Weider book ive purchased and it hasn't given me a good first impression. And the only reason i gave this book a two star was because of the few bits of information here and there that i found useful. Definitely not for everyone.

my favorite.......2007-10-08
If you are a new ager or Wiccan that likes flash and form, this may not be for you. If however you prefer the old ways, deep Western mysticism, and nostalgia, then this pack should be a delight to use. It is not "pretty" and bright like many, but I find it to have very deep "feeling" and the cards are more intuitive for me. Especially if you are into Golden Dawn or Western mystery systems, this is the pack to understand, as much of the symbolism is in there. But again, if you prefer something bright and colorful, for looks rather than use, then this is not for you.
The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack .......2007-09-18
I have a couple other packs of tarot cards, but this pack uses pictures that are orignal to the tarot pack, in line with most books written on the subject. As for the reader the pictures are easy to understand, out of the four types of Rider Waite Tarot packs, this is the far superior to them all.
Nice additon to a tarot collection.......2007-08-08
I love the rider waite deck, I own 4 versions of it. I love to see the cards in different colors and different back designs. I have the Rider Waite, Universal rider Waite, Radiant Waite and Just got the Original version. What I like about it is that the cards a slick so you can spread them out in a line, This is good because some readers like to pull cards that way, The other waite decks do a poor job at spreading the cards out. The Back design is nice much better than the regular rider waite's Plaid. The Colors are soft, So some people bright colors are to much for the eyes, I don't have that problem but its can be nice to have a softer darker deck to work with, + Some clients may also like softer colors. The Radiant is very bright and is Full of color and the universal is light. The One thing I do not like so much is the dots on the faces of the people. But I can deal with that. This is a good starter deck, But If you want a deck with more color go with a clone deck like the universal or radient.
Cool coloring but too slick, shiny, and poor print quality........2007-06-26
I am SO disappointed in this deck! I'd seen a well worn copy of "The Original Rider Waite" and fell in love with the coloring, especially the seafoam greens in place of the water blues in the other Rider deck I have (ISBN#0-913866-13-x). I also liked the way skin is colored with red pointalistic dotting, as if to indicate blood/life in the flesh. Greys in the other deck are done in ranges of cream/beige/tan colors in the "original." Purples in the "regular" are a deeper, richer crimson in the "original." Red in the "original" is deeper, less orangey. Often color is visually textured like parchment or done in crosshatching lines of color, or tiny dotting of color, which looked great in my friends worn copy. I noticed so many more things in the images than I had in my other Rider Waite Smith deck and I liked the idea of having a deck with colors more closely resembling the original deck and symbolism. So, I could hardly wait to get this, but when it came in, my heart sunk. Another reviewer mentioned how shiny and slippery these cards were, which didn't sound good... but when I saw it for myself, it was much worse than I'd imagined. They're coated in some kind of plastic that is so shiny light glares off of it. I had to hold the cards at just so an angle to see them clearly. The upsides of the coating -may- be that it can make shuffling more slippery, which some may prefer, though I prefer cards with a more "organic" feel to them. Or maybe the plastic helps prevent moisture absorption? I haven't tested this theory out, yet, but I prefer cards that can "breathe," exchange with the elements in their environment and our hands. Perhaps the plastic coating was a way to cheap out on the paper quality and durability of the cards. It seems a little like this, when comparing the feel, weight, and flexibility of this deck with my regular Rider pack. I'm wondering if this coating will peel up from the edges... in some places it looks like there's a visible layering that could peel.
Also, the black outlining quality is unclear, blurry, compared to the other Rider deck I have. For example, it's harder to distinguish the zodiac symbols in the Charioteer's belt, nor the other glyphs of his "skirt." For analogy, if this deck had been printed on a home desktop printer, the difference between the decks would be like setting print quality to "draft" at times, and at best "standard," rather than "fine."
I'm not sure what to do with these cards... same them for emergency readings in misty, damp situations? Give them away? Try to return them? I just hope I can find a printing of the "original" colors, but less slick, shiny plastic. Maybe there was an earlier, better printing for this edition? I'm hoping my friend will tell me his deck was once so shiny and slick, but time and use will mute it. I'll follow-up if I find out.
2 stars for the coloring.
Of historical interest, but may not appeal to beginners.......2007-06-07
This was the first Waite deck I got and it just didn't appeal to me. The main problem is the blues of the original images that they reproduced for this deck have apparently all faded to a dull pale green that is very unappealing. I have since acquired the Universal Waite and find it much more pleasant to use. The Original Rider Waite is of historical interest, but I think will not appeal to many users. The packaging is well done, though Waite's Key to the Tarot booklet is less useful to a beginner than a book such as Rachel Pollack's Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom.
