Book Description
One of the world's most influential philosophers here considers the ethical issues surrounding globalization, showing how a global ethic rather than a nationalistic approach can provide illuminating answers to important problems. In a new preface, Peter Singer discusses how the recent Iraq war and its aftermath have changed the prospects for the ethical approach he advocates. Q: What was your original idea for the book? A: When people talk about globalization, they usually mean the lowering of barriers to free trade and the flow of investment. And they usually don't see these as ethical questions. I wanted to bring together several different issues that are also part of living in a more globalized world and show that they are, at their core, ethical questions. So as well as trade issues, I cover climate change, intervention across national borders to protect human rights, and aid from rich nations to poor ones. Q: Have world events in the past three years further shaped that idea and your arguments? A: Definitely. The attacks on 9/11 showed that even the mightiest power the world has never known is vulnerable to being attacked. But more significantly, the crisis over Iraq posed a choice between taking the path of international cooperation, and that of unilateral action. It was also a choice between the rule of law and the rule of force. Unfortunately, the United States made the wrong choice. Q: What do you hope the book will accomplish? A: I hope it will contribute to people seeing these questions as ethical issues and to looking at ethics from a more global-and therefore less national-perspective.
Customer Reviews:
More about the politics of globalization.......2007-06-04
This book has more of a political focus than an ethics focus. A serious shortcoming is the lack of appreciation for the Eastern perspective. There is no mention in the index of Buddha, Confucius, or Taoism. How can you consider globalization from a parochial perspective? I recommend this book by Canright: Achieve Lasting Happiness: Timeless Secrets to Transform Your Life. "Achieve Lasting Happiness" proposes Confucian philosophy as a basis for universal ethics. Globalization will crush humanity unless there is a system of universal ethics as a counter balance to greed on a world-wide scope.
This guy gives me the creeps.......2007-04-05
This book is the perfect example of how deluded left wing-intellectuals have become. With friends like this (and Chomsky, and Moore, and Gore) the left doesn't need any enemies.
I recommend Why Globalization Works (Yale Nota Bene) instead. A solid overview from someone who actually understands how the world works.
POORLY WRITTEN BOOK.......2007-03-25
Peter Singer, inspite of his poor usage of commas, tries to make the point that economics could out do and render politics small and mostly insignificant stave for adjustments of the Golden Straight Jacket.
I think that a point on how economics and trade policies also works as a psuedo-war or carrot and stick type of negotiation fodder. Sanctions have long been used as a form of political tactic of agression or revenge but Singer fails to point this out. Rather he tries to portray everyone on the planet as being a bunch of scared sheep who are unable to control anything in this ocean of chaos that he calls Capatalism with no heart.
Also, he explains the genisis of ethics as having congieled from mammal feelings and behaviors. He then goes on to explain how those mammal traits are disctint from our closest non-human relatives. How can he compare mammals to our closest non-human relatives? It is pure nonsense! Monkeys, pigs, dogs, horses and cattle are all mammals and are our closest non-human relatives! This guy is a MORON!
Improving on that statement I will attack his stance on his "new ethic" that has spawned from our new technology and globalization. I shudder at the very idea that one, or a few, nations should impose their new found ethics onto contradictory morals, laws and ethics of smaller and less developed nations. For heavens sakes!
I think that Singer is a poor poor man who is misguided and confused. I feel sympathy for him and for his readers.
One atmosphere? What is he talking about here? Are CFC's for real?
Well I guess there is no argument, scientifically, against Chlorofluorocarbons existing or being real. Peter Singer is talking about everyone shares the Atmosphere. What I disagree with him on is his comparison he used to point the blame of pollution at America. On page 20 he said that one of Britain's nuclear plants leaked waste into the north sea and ruined shellfish and lobsters (and probably regular fish TOO) for Ireland and Norway too. Norway got nuclear waste on its shores and when it took Britain to court for it, the "author" (like he could WRITE) tries to make the point that Kiribati could likewise sure America because its pollution caused global warming which then caused the ice caps to melt which then caused the sea levels to rise which THEN caused the sea to submerge Kiribati's mud homes and farms. Wow, I think that is a textbook example of the slippery slope fallacy and makes for one terrible comparison. Britain's nuclear pollution was preventable, an accident (?) and was directly traceable to Britain whereas America is NOT the world's sole producer of pollution and there for is NOT solely responsible like Britain was.
God, I literally cannot read one page in this book without being outraged. I read this book with a pen and I do not need a bookmark for all I need to do is start reading where my comments in the margin stop.
Worth your time........2006-06-30
I've read the pro's and con's of other reviews and would like to have a brief word with those considering this book as a future purchase.
Looking at the good reviews, one I could easily give becuase I find them very agreeable, one finds the essence of the book, a global utilitarian ethical viewpoint. After browsing the negative reviews I find useful criticism gone too far. There is good substance to their points, but more often they seem to be thinking aloud rather than providing a useful review.
My suggestion: If you have heard about this book or stumbled here by accident, buy this book. While there are always points of contention in the 'nitty-gritty' the essence of his thoughts are worth more than one read, and more than simple consideration. The world is a rapidly changing place and the four chapters presented in his book offer four distinct ways to view the globalization of mankind from an utilitarian ethical perspective. I admit my idealists leanings nevertheless if one doesn't agree with Singer's arguements, then there is no better place to start making counter-arguements. The book is easy to read in common vernacular and Singer gives a good overview of the backround to each chapter focus. You will be a better citizen of whichever state after reading this one.
Outdated in a Dynamic World.......2006-05-31
While considered cutting edge at the time of publishing Singer's book "One World" simply doesn't go the distance a book should go in the dynamic world of today. Singer, basically, stops where essential liberal interests do which is a really bad thing for an ethicist to do. He doesn't get into a really nitty-gritty stuff such as seeing the consequences of leisurely, short-term benefits oriented political action as ultimately damaging for the system. By not going the distance Singer is cutting the branch on which he is sitting. Do not read.

Review from Online Learning Magazine, Sept. 2000.......2000-10-26
Online Learning Magazine reviewed this book in the September 2000 issue, comparing The Business Case for Web-Based Training (Tammy Whalen and David Wright), Return on Investment (Jack J. Phillips), and The ROI of Human Capital (Jac Fitz-Enz).
"Tammy Whalen and David Wright's book, The Business Case for Web-Based Training, is based mostly on examples. They outline the practical business reasons for Web-based training, compare Web delivery with traditional training delivery, and help management decide if the money spent is worth it. They provide a case study as an example, then invite trainers to use that model to evaluate their own Web-based training."
If you are in the e-learning business, you must read it!!.......2000-08-03
This book give you a company perspective of how to delivere web-based training, doing a deep and detailed analisys about cost-benefit, diferent typical pricing models,... I think that this book has a valuable information for yours research of implementing web-based training in your company.
Book Description
This book was first published in 1977 and is widely recognized as a classic in the field. It is the "bible" for wildlife managers everywhere. It is an introduction to the methods and analysis of vertebrate populations for ecologists and wildlife managers as well as students of these subjects. A wide range of examples drawn from mammals and birds in different parts of the world is used to illustrate these methods. The book shows how population analysis can be applied to practical problems of wildlife management such as reducing a population, stimulating it to increase or taking from it a sustained yield. In order to make this complex subject as simple as possible, the methods for analysis described in this book are those which use elementary algebra and statistics rather than complex mathematics. Graeme Caughley studied the interactions between large mammalian herbivores and the environments they occupy. The pattern of population growth that can be predicted theoretically from such a relationship is both complex and variable. The animals will either erupt, crash, and then converge to a more stable density, or the population may oscillate indefinitely, the densities of plants and animals being locked into a stable limit cycle. He argued that the dynamics of mammalian herbivore populations are comprehensible only in terms of an interactive relationship between the herbivores and vegetation. He further argued that efficient management of such systems requires an understanding of the underlying mechanisms whereby the animals react to the plants and in turn the plants react dynamically to the effects of grazing. He was best known for his contributions to the understanding of herbivore-vegetation dynamics in the New Zealand high country, the Himalayas, southern Africa and the semi-arid rangelands of Australia. His research was distinguished by rigorous design, execution and analysis, so that the conclusions had generality beyond the particular species studied. Since he chose topics that combined theoretical interest and practical application, he also influenced important management policies - deer populations in New Zealand, kangaroos in Australia and the conservation of large mammals in Africa and North America. He had a major influence on thinking and practice in the field of vertebrate ecology and wildlife management throughout the world.

Through live interviews, powerful pre-match visualizations, Jeff's insights and the reflections of top pro players, you will begin to close out a lead with authority, play loose and focused under pressure and without fear.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful Cd.......2007-06-27
Jeff Greenwald makes some very useful comments and analysis for improving your mental game of competitive tennis. His tone is deliberate, uses good examples from real experience and has usable suggestions.
Great Advice.......2007-01-18
There is really some good advice and suggestions in this CD for dealing with the tension and fears that can hinder athletic performance. Many of these can be applied to more than just tennis. One of the best keys for improving any athletic skill is reducing tension and this CD addresses several causes and introduces potential ways to address issues. I found the advice very relevant and useful.
Help for Mental Midget Tennis Players - Like Me.......2005-05-14
I bought this book specifically because this year I have been nervous and unconfident during matches. Was this helpful? Absolutely! Does it completely cure the problem and will listening to this make your problems go away? Absolutely not!
This tape hit right on the problems I had. That there is an internal conflict between my physical self and my ego. My ego makes me play tight when playing lesser talented people. It restricts my mental thought process when I'm getting beat by better players making me mad at myself instead of focusing on how I should try to cure the problem.
Let me give you an example where it immediately helped. I'm an adequate server but can be prone to double fault issues. This tape asks you to visualize the stroke or a part of the stroke you are struggling with and how to correct it. Now, that sounds simple. But instead of doing this, I was mentally losing it thinking of nothing in particular until I fulfilled my destiny with a double fault. In case you haven't noticed, it's a village idiot writing this review but at least I recognize this. I was actually surprised how well these simple adjustments in attitude helped. I'm still working on all the negative discussions that I have with myself on court.
Who knows, with a little work, maybe I'll be considered a normal humanoid.
Hey this really does help.......2005-03-15
Obviously if you are going to buy this CD you play tennis. Alot of tennis.
It does help with visualization and match play, relaxation etc. I was skeptical when I first listened to it, but it grows on you.
If you put some of his ideas into practice you really do relax on the court.
Shows to how to bring your best game to the court!.......2003-04-02
I've done a lot of sports in my life, and have only rarely been given any guidance by coaches about how to address the issue of nerves, tension, relaxation, focus, and playing my best physical game while my mental side was going crazy with the tension of the moment. It's no easy task, but Jeff Greenwald's "Fearless Tennis" finally tackles a subject that affects all of us who play the game, any game for that matter. Relaxing and hitting our best stuff under the pressure of a match, at any level, has always been elusive at best. It's obvious when your hear this CD, that Jeff has "been there". His professional experience on the tour gives credence to his insights on how the pressure of a match can undermine so devastatingly our ability to hit the ball like we do when it doesn't count. I think Jeff has done us all a great service by combining his extensive match experience, knowledge of the game, and advanced psychological training to produce this CD. I feel like Jeff has lifted a real load of mental anguish off my shoulders every time I walk on a court. I'm playing more relaxed, hitting out more on the pressure points, and am making fewer errors. I have mixed emotions about letting everybody know about this great CD.
It's helped me immensely , I'm just not sure I want my opponents to know this stuff too!
Bill Dunn - 4.0-4.5

Customer Reviews:
Great on financials, Lacking on creativity........2002-06-02
I was amazed how informative this book is when it comes to getting the business started financially and how to devise a marketing plan, find employees and contractors, and build a readership. However, the book really gives no information on the creative aspect of the business, such as how to pick a layout scheme or weed out useless content. I feel more confident on the business side now, but am still lost as far as building the magazine itself.
Starting and Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine.......2002-04-28
Woodard does an excellent job of explaining the financial aspects of magazine publishing. She also gives the reader many ideas on targeting an audience and advertisers. However, the book may fall a little short on creativity, such as how to color outside the lines in finding new ways to sell subscriptions and gain advertisers. Direct mailing and newstands can only go so far. Overall, the book allows the reader to get a good handle on the basics of starting a magazine.
best of the bunch.......2001-10-06
I read three books like this one before starting my magazine. This one was definitely the most complete and understandable. She doesn't cover prining, computers or production technology. And she doesn't talk about writing or editing. But she does a great job showing you how to get subscribers, sell ads, raise startup money, and hire good people. If you want to start a magazine, forget the other books and read this one.
Disappointed.......2001-08-20
Admittedly, I was disappointed when I sifted through the pages to find that many subjects listed in the content pages had been barely discussed in depth. Although this is a book about the business of publishing it fails to cover adequately the subject of editorial schedules and disseminating information. The layout makes it difficult (I found) to take in the information and use it to your benefit. There are very little illustrations or visual examples of layouts to guide the inexperienced publisher. Much of the information is written in a general nature and is basically just common sense. I found myself, after reading a few chapters, asking many questions and the answers, I'm afraid, are not in this book. As someone new to the publishing business I was looking for something that I could use as a reliable guide taking me through the process step by step. Alas, this book did not meet my needs.
Solid book.......2001-02-13
Don't let the raw art of the cover deceive you: this is a very good book. It complements Samir Husni's Launch your Magazine, with solid information on the commercial side of a magazine: how to study your market before you launch that dream magazine, what circulation is (and how to target for your audience), how to estimate your fixed and variable publishing costs (and how to balance them with your estimated revenues so as to break-even and then make a profit), and lots of other details. There are a few obvious pieces of info, but I read it twice, and marvelled at the insights and expertise which Cheryl Woodard offers us for a bargain price. Now I guess I'll read it a third time.

Customer Reviews:
Not very useful.......2006-06-13
I did not find this book to be very useful. For one thing, it seems to assume that if you're going to publish a magaine you had better have a lot of money. I didn't have a lot of money, so this book started out by making me feel like I ought to throw my idea away. Second, it has a lot of information about management (how to make business decisions, budgeting, strategy, subscribers are a leaking bucket, blah blah) but I was already past that. I just wanted to know how to get started. Nothing truly practical here. If you're just thinking about starting a magazine, this book gives a decent overview of how to think about and plan your idea. If you're already in the process of putting together your magazine, you need something different. I recommend "How Not to Start a Magazine" by B. Ann Bell.
Great Guide.......2006-06-10
I recommend this book to an individual with no prior magazine publishing experience or know-how.
Who is this Patrick Brady?.......2006-05-06
I read this book and I can see that most other reviewers agree with me that the book's pretty good. It's not perfect, but what is? Reviewer Patrick Brady panned the book, however. I'd like to know Patrick Brady's credentials. He says he's published a magazine. Which magazine? Is it on newsstands?
Best of the bunch.......2005-03-02
I read all the books about starting magazines for a school project and I think Woodard's book is the best. It covers things overlooked by books about design or editing or production - like how to set competitive ad prices, or how to sell subscriptions without a lot of money. And because this one is updated regularly, its very current, including how to integrate a website with a print magazine. Full of practical suggestions from real publishers, and links to a mass of resources, this book may be the only one you need.
Falls Woefully Short.......2005-01-14
Starting a magazine, as I have done, requires more than just an editorial plan. Woodard's book does a nice job of establishing what needs to go into an editorial plan but it completely ignores production issues, printing, advertising and funding. It's a little like telling someone how to design a car without mentioning that in addition to nice upholstery and great body work it needs an engine and tires. Put another way, she only talks about the part of the iceberg you can see.

Customer Reviews:
must read.......2000-03-22
Catherine Called Birdy was an exciting book. You never knew what was going to happen next. It's about a teenage girl who is being married off to a "pig," who she hates. Well, not if she has anything to say about it. I liked this book because it was interesting to know what a young girl's life would be like back then. The title grabbed my attention because it was unusual. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books that take place in the Middle Ages and who enjoys a great book that you can't put down.
Amazing.......1999-12-10
Catherine is a clever, high spirited, cheerful young girl living in the middle ages. Besides having a beast for a father, pig for a brother, and a annoyance for a nanny, Catherine must deal with the ill-mannered suiters that come to take her as their wife. This is an amazing book for children.
Absolutely amazing.......1999-12-07
This is by far the best book I have ever read. The book is funny, witty, and well-written. I loved it and I have read it several times.
Excellent!.......1999-11-08
This is a wonderful, funny, thought-provoking story. A plucky girl overcomes her origins as a nameless orphan, and finds her own way in a medieval English village.
It was pretty good.......1999-06-21
I thought this book was ok. Somne of it was confusing and boring otherwise it was very good.
