Product Description
This is a concise, yet complete handbook for starting a successful organic farm based on the community-supported agriculture concept. Written for farmers and non-farmers alike, the books illustrates how two middle-aged novices are making a decent living on less than two acres of land. Bob and Bonnie found few resources applicable to their situation when they began researching making their farm dream a reality and the book originally stemmed from their own desire to help others by sharing universal guidelines on small farm start-ups. The model explained in the book is an updated version of the diverse market gardens/farms found throughout recorded history. Not just a theory book, it details specific tools, techniques and how-to information. The Gregsons share sound advice, along with specific tools, marketing techniques, and planning guidelines, such as start up requirements, business plan basics, the importance of value-added products, choosing the best equipment and supplies, and more. The core of their operation, the subscription system, is examined in detail, with sound recommendations and guidelines for implementation.
Customer Reviews:
Location dependent.......2007-01-03
Aside from its wonderful inspirational value, the book is valuable mostly if you live in the right location to start such a project. This should be noted up front because if you live in a poor economic area where people can't afford subscriptions, you will not be able to make a go of it as it is described. Living in the Seattle area as the writers did, where many people appreciate organic foods and have the means to afford them, will of course make a better place for such a farm then let's say the backwoods somewhere where people have a hard time making ends meet. My point being that your location weighs heavily on the success of your organic farm. The potential buyer needs to know this before purchasing this book.

A Down-to-Earth Guide for 'Subscription Farming'.......1999-12-28
The Gregson's passion for both organic farming and community supported agriculture is evident throughout the book. Best of all, they don't try to gloss over the less pleasant aspects of growing organically for a living. Anyone even dreaming about small scale farming will benefit from their experiences and examples.
Lots of information for the 1st-time, small acreage farmer.......1999-06-09
The Gregsons came from an urban life out to make a small farm. Through many trials and errors (which they humbly share) they have found a successful formula for earning a sustainable income from a few acres. This is a must read for anyone considering a CSA farm.

All stars, but exacting to assemble.......2001-04-04
I love punch-out books and always have. The thrill of assembling a dimensional object from a flat piece of paper or cardboard has been a creative outlet. This book, when cut apart and glued together, makes a nice hemisphere showing the Northern night sky. If you hold the finished dome over a light bulb for a few seconds, then turn the light out, place the dome over your head (in a dark room)the stars glow with relativly the same intensity as they do out of doors. The representation of the Milky way was too bright and I toned it down with watercolor. The completed dome is a good teaching tool for youngsters learning their constellations. It is not something that is simple to assemble. Most kids would have difficulty with getting the accurately cut pieces to mesh in the correct manner and in making the glue lines straight. In order to function well, the parts must be put together tightly and securely. Pinholes left by misaligned sections are distracting in the finished dome. The paper is nice and thick, and the dome I built fifteen years ago is still functional.
Book Description
Unfulfilled by city life, Amy Blackmarr, then in her mid-thirties, sold her thriving paralegal business and returned to her Georgia roots. She passed five years in her grandfather's remote "old scarecrow of a fishing cabin" beside a South Georgia pond, where she immersed herself in her surroundings and in her writing. With warmth, charm, and humor, Blackmarr mixes vignettes from her past with reflections on the present, describing the surprising generosity of strangers; life without hot water; her two dogs, one a "lush" and the other a cave builder; the occasional visit from an alligator; her days as a two-stepping cowgirl; pheasant hunting with her third ex-husband; and the life and death of her grandmother. In the tradition of Kathleen Norris's The Cloister Walk and Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Going to Ground is Blackmarr's ode to romance, to the beauty of nature, to the joys and fears of solitary life, and to one woman's discovery of herself.

beautiful essays, beautifully read.......2007-09-09
The essays that comprise this collection put me in mind of river stones, each compact and perfectly polished, each dense with the weight of insight and experience. The essays are generally brief, yet rich with detail; comparisons to Thoreau or John Muir are more than appropriate. I generally prefer reading a book to listening to one, but this is an exception. Amy Blackmarr's voice is southern and evocative in that soft, slow sense that puts me in mind of warm nights on a front porch. You will quickly feel you are beside a small pond in the South Georgia pines.
I cried and laughed - in that order.......2007-09-01
You know she's a great writer when she spins her words so profoundly and beautifully that it makes you cry within seconds....then listen with all senses vigilent...then laugh out loud....then cry again in a final release of everything you had left in your emotional arsenal of defenses. Amy Blackmarr's work in this audio is nothing short of a spiritual awakening...without the obligatory regligious overtones. Wherever you come from, no matter what you're looking for, listen to this, and you will be healed in some way.
New Complete Audio Book is wonderful listening.......2007-08-31
I had the privilege of hearing an advance copy of the new complete Audio Book of Amy Blackmarr's classic, GOING TO GROUND:Simple Life on a Georgia Pond. Blackmarr's pleasing southern voice, combined with Chase Anderson's Indian flute and fiddle introductions, makes for wonderful listening that takes you right to the heart of the Georgia pond and simple cabin, which is the setting for the book. Humor is one of the book's strongest points, and it comes through funnier than ever in the author's excellent telling of the characters and the ubiquitous mice!
For me...the right book at the right time!.......2005-07-30
A book about leaving the city, leaving your business behind and moving to Georgia. I wonder why it was that I became so enamored of this book and it's author. Becuase, I'm about to do the same thing. This is the kind of book that I could probably read again and again. It suanders. It meanders. It is relaxed. It's scope is wide, it's execution is simple and effortless. I found myself yearning to be the author's guest at her little cabin by the pond. I wanted to pet her dogs, drink a beer with her neighbors. I wanted to walk in her woods. Fantastic job at gentle memoir.
Nice place to sit back and relax.......2004-07-12
Young South Georgia woman gets off the fast train, returns to family's shack by the pond, then delivers us a way to enjoy her experiences and reflections. The sparce prose of Amy Blackmarr lets you sit back and relax awhile. You'll also enjoy the sequel, House of Steps, where she moves to a peculiar little house out in Kansas. Her outlook on life is quite refreshing. Both books are short, too, so they're great for summer trips to the beach, or weekends out in the backyard.
Book Description
"[A] well-researched, gracious and truthful account." --Georgian Bay Today
When her husband proposed living on a boat full-time, Debra Cantrell wondered what other women in her position had done and began a five-year study to find out what choices they had made and how it had all worked out. The result is Changing Course, a guidebook for navigating this odyssey. No matter what the outcome, each woman was strengthened by the experience.
In an era when "downshifting" is common and people are considering the benefits of simplified living, Changing Course is both timely and practical.
Customer Reviews:
Its more for women who are married than single women/men.......2007-07-15
Contrary to what the title Changing Course : A Woman's Guide to Choosing the Cruising Life says, this isn't really a book for women who are single, don't care to have a partner etc. Its for women who are married and basically the issues that a couple will have when living on a boat in such small living quarters. Am still looking for the book someone has written, that deals with the single person who chooses a compact life living on a boat, much like we did when in college. But if you can over look what I consider marriage advise (after 37 yrs I am now a widow) and pick the bits of advise that are useful as far as actually living on a boat as your main home, then its worth a read.
Floating Marriage Counselor.......2005-11-10
A little less psycho babble and a bit more logistical information would have suited me better. Ms. Cantrell spends the majority of the book being a relationship/marriage counselor, and though it's true issues become larger in smaller spaces, there are more issues for women cruisers than just their relationship dynamics. As I said, practical logistical information would have suited me better.
Fast Read and Very Helpful.......2005-10-14
I read this book in a day, it was very interesting and informative. It gives some great advise about what to think about before you go cruising whether you're totally into it or apprehensive.
Guys.......2002-01-09
When you asked what your wife thought about buying a bigger boat and sailing away, was your suggestion received enthusiastically?
If not, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It is worth its weight in gold. It will answer all her questions, and it will give you a better understanding of her point of view, and let you know what you need to change about yourself to help get her on board.
Changing Course: A Woman's Guide to Choosing the Cruising Li.......2001-11-30
An excellent book on making the transition from the current life you know to one of great change and adventure. Debra Cantrell brings forward all the pros and cons that she and other women in her study experienced in choosing the cruising life.
I felt that this book would be a great source of information and inspiration for women faced with this life changing decision.
From my prospective, it provided me with a greater understanding of what my wife was struggling with in making my dream of cruising a reality. Through our discussions surrounding this book, we have now reached a common goal of cruising that will be exciting for both of us.

Helping to Overcome the Fear of Math!.......2007-09-30
The ALGEBRA WORKBOOK FOR DUMMIES was purchased, along with ALGEBRA FOR DUMMIES, for a close friend that has gone back to school at a "mature" age. Together they haven't exactly made her a raving algebraic enthusiast but they put forth the concepts in a manner that is logical and easier to understand. I don't think she'll score a 4 for this class but there's no doubt that she'll achieve a passing grade!
Going Back to College..........2006-09-14
I'm 35 and studying for a COMPASS test (college entrance exam for those who never took the ACT/SAT). I failed Algebra in High School, skipped classes alot, and remembered absolutely nothing, but I have a good head for numbers and logic, so I've found myself able to understand most of the concepts in this book so far. If you have no head for numbers, or feel that you aren't good with logic problems/eyeballing math questions, then you may want to also purchase the "Algebra For Dummies", as this book only *briefly* goes into each concept.
Also, as a side note: please don't give an item a review of 1 star simply because another dealer fell through on delivery: it can mislead people who just look at the overall rating of a product. :-)
Algebra for Dummies Workbook.......2006-08-22
I have gone back to college after 20 years and need to take a College Algebra course. This workbook has been very helpful in reviewing things I went over a very long time ago and making sense out of them. I highly recommend it.
Excellent.......2006-03-09
This book is a very good teacher. I'm going back to school after 20 years and this book helped prepare me for the College Placement Test.
Algebra Workbook For Dummies.......2006-02-25
I purchased the Algebra for Dummies to help me in my Algebra class. Though it is a gret book and explains everything in a very easy to understand way, I felt I needed more practice with problems. This workbook did the trick!
It correlates with the first book and you can use them together to fully understand the rules and concepts. A+++

Found Errors.......2007-08-14
I am just finishing Chapter 5 and already I have found 4 mistakes in basic math and algebra. These errors include mistakes in addition, failing to include a term of an equation in the answer, failure to change signs properly. I do not know if these errors were made by the author or the publishing company. Either way I feel more attention should have paid to quality control. This book is supposed to help us understand Algebra, but instead it causes confusion with all these errors.
Excellent service and delivery.......2007-03-31
I ordered this book online and in no time did I have it in the mail. I dont complain. Totally good service.

Customer Reviews:
An enchanting tale of First Love.......2002-12-03
I read this book in one day, it was the kind of story that isn't too long and isn't too short, also it isn't very complex so it can be absorbed in one sitting.
The story is about Julia, who is this not pretty but not ugly fourteen year old. Her mother is the type who is pretty, skinny, perfect, is married to a lawyer and has all the right friends.
Julia is the opposite of her mother, she loves the thrill of playing the piano in front of an audience, she prays for an opera voice, and loves to hang out with her fellow musician friends at her Seattle high school.
Well her mother has different plans, she nags and nags about her daughter dressing dowdy, having ugly hair, not wearing the right make up for her skin tone, and she hates the fact that her daughter wants to be a musician- -because in her mother's mind 'no one ever got anywhere playing the piano, unless they were one of the crude rock 'n roll stars'.
Julia just can't take it anymore, so, she calls her father who lives in the Rural Moon Valley and talkes to her stepfather-who by the way adores her-and they decide that she should spend the school semester in Moon Valley.
Her mother is furious, but she goes, at first everything is so off, her grandmother is a hermit-but a nice one-her dad is always working on his hand moade cabinet buisness, and she keeps seeing this girl in the marsh who runs every time Julia tries to talk to her.
Slowly as the year presses on she makes some girl friends, gains an enemy named Tammy, and falls in love with this beautiful boy with sapphire eyes and unruly auburn hair.
The boy who's name is Luke, seems to know something about this mysterious girl, but he's not talking, everyone in town says she's a ghost? But there's no such things as ghosts right?
Through lonliness, defending herself against her nagging mother and the vengeful Tammy, falling in love with Luke and meeting the mysterious lady in white of the marsh Julia searches for solid ground and a way to get what her heart desires. A good book, I reccomend it to Christian teenage girls looking for a story that teaches morals and how to deal with life and problems the right way.

Other side of the moon.......2002-10-23
I found this book left me hanging on what was really important in my life. I read it while I was staying in a cabin on vacation and found myself drifting out the door to the old rope swing where I literally just sat and swang, my mind in a drifting state. After that, it was one am, I sat on a rock and sort of layed out all the important things in my life in my head and straighted them all out. It really helped me see my choices and unclutter what I had.
The story had it's bizarre moments, when I thought, 'okay, that didn't really happen.' but it had, overall, a surreal effect that cleared away my muddled mind
An awesome book-especially if you are a musician.......2002-07-01
Cattail Moon was really great! It had just the right mix of mystery, sadness, happiness, friendship, and love. As a musician, I could relate to Julia very well. It did scare me a little, that maybe one day my music dreams would present a hard decision. But there are not many music books out there, so I enjoyed reading this one. I also loved the fact that it encouraged individuality. This was a terrific book for anyone to read, but I especially recommend it to musicians.
The Review of Cattail Moon.......2001-04-12
Have you ever read a book that you couldn't put down? A book with a great plot? Well I have and this is why I enjoyed the book Cattail Moon by Jean Thesman. This book was very interesting and kept my attention. The best part of the book is when the mystery of the ghost is solved. At this moment it is like I found the missing puzzle piece. This is also the climax of the book.
The author does a great job of describing the conflict and the climax. These two parts and the talent of the auther makes the story it's best. The conflict is what kept me reading and the climax is when the conflict get's it's most interesting right before it is solved in the resolution. This is a great book that I couldn't put down. I recommened it for any reader!
Wonderful Book!.......2000-07-14
I loved this book! This was my first book I have read by Jean Thesman. And I plan to read more. It is about a girl named Julia who is 15(like most main characters in Thesman's books) and moves in with father (in a small town) after living with her mother in Seattle. Then she finds a ghost in town, and wishes to find out more. Julia tries to get infomation from a boy name Luke, but he doesn't want to talk about it. If I say any more, I will give the whole book away. You should really read it!
