Galaxies have a history. This has become clear from recent sky surveys which have shown that distant galaxies, formed early in the life of the Universe, differ from the nearby ones. New observational windows at ultraviolet, infrared and millimetric wavelengths (provided by ROSAT, IRAM, IUE, IRAS, ISO) have revealed that galaxies contain a wealth of components: very hot gas, atomic hydrogen, molecules, dust, dark matter ...

A significant advance is expected due to new instruments (VLT, FIRST, XMM) which will allow one to explore the most distant Universe. Three Euroconferences have been planned to punctuate this new epoch in galactic research, bringing together specialists in various fields of Astronomy.

The first one, held in Granada (Spain) in May 2000, addressed the observational clues. The second one took place in October 2001 in St Denis de la Réunion (France) and reviewed the basic building blocks and small-scale processes in galaxy evolution. The third one will take place in July 2002 in Kiel (Germany) and will be devoted to the overall modelling of galaxy evolution. This book contains the proceedings of the second conference. It is suitable for researchers and PhD students in Astrophysics.

Whether a child, parent, or first time coach with no prior knowledge, this book is the perfect introduction to children's soccer. Add your league specifics and develop technically as you go. A first, must read.

Very helpful and easy to understand........1998-10-19

I am the first time coach of a second grade boys soccer team. This book was very easy to understand for the kids as well as myself. For kids that are relatively new to the game it explains positions, the different kinds of kicks and the all around basics of soccer without getting too technical. It has been a great aid for our team.

An excellent guide for beginning players and new coaches.......1998-08-12

This book provides a brief introduction to soccer, at the right level of detail for those new to the game. My 11-year-old son found the summary of the rules and strategies quite helpful. As a new coach, I was glad to have a compact volume that included most of what I needed to know. There are other books that provide more detail on the game and more exercises and drills for soccer players -- but this is the ideal "first book" for someone just learning about the game. I recommend it highly.

Politics/prejudice don't belong in a book like this........2007-08-31

I've barely made it to a fraction of the book but every few pages there's a sentence comparing democrats to communist or praising the civilized western world compared to the "savages" that live elsewhere. It's not obvious, just enough to make you go "huh" for a second then continue, then finally at the definition of the word "canard" there's an example mocking middle eastern countries, saying that reports of great victories, especially when issued by countries of the middle east, are almost always canards. Um, yeah, whatever. This guy also is obsessed with Muhammad Ali and takes a shot at him every once in a while. And hates OPEC, LOL. I haven't finished the book but I read enough to make my point here. I imagine this author is some old, bitter, right-wing republican and a closet bigot.

Great little addition to the family's collection of reference and word books!

You'll easily enrich and enliven your vocabulary while learning a little background and history of the origin of the word!

This is not a collection of 'pedantic pundit or parlance'.....all of the words can be used in everyday communication.

They are good, strong words with clear meanings which can help you to express yourself with elegance!

It made the difference!.......2002-04-03

Before using this book it was difficult to remember kanjis because I did not know which ones were worth to learn. All of them had the same weight to me. From the first day I started to learn the kanjis in this book, I was surprised by the way I was able to recognize the characters in the Japanese newspapers. Although not updated recently, the words in this book were ordered by frequency and you will find that after learning the first ten, you will see them everywhere in newspapers, magazines or in TV news headlines. This motivates you to continue learning more and more with confidence.

I read a bad review of this book and had to counter. Serious about reading Japanese? Get this book if you can find it. Shame on Tuttle for letting it go out of print. The only valid excuse could be they are resetting it with Chinese readings as well. Now THAT would be a REALLY great book.
