"Masters" of fish foods.......2002-09-29
If you're into aquarium fish, and I mean really, really into aquarium fish, this is probably the best book available about its subject. It's truly the classic in the field. Unfortunately, its demographic is rather small, being the people occupying that grey area between amatuers who are kind of interested in fishtanks and professional aquatic biologists, so it's out of print. Encyclopedia of Live Foods is an excellent read. Tons of information about breeding and using live fish foods. Spectacular.

Copepods in Aquaculture
ASIN: 0632054956 |
Book Description
As the expansion in world aquaculture continues at a very high rate, so does the need for information on feeding of cultivated fish and shellfish. In the larval and juvenile phases of many species, the use of manufactured feed is not possible. This important book covers in detail the biology and culture of the main live prey and microalgae used as feeds in the aquaculture of major commercial species including shrimps, sea bass, halibut, cod and bivalves.Contents include comprehensive details of the status of marine aquaculture in relation to live prey, and chapters covering the biology, production, harvesting, processing and nutritional value of microalgae and the main prey species: rotifers, Artemia and copepods. The editors have drawn together an impressive international team of contributors, providing a work that is set to become the standard reference and practical guide on the subject for many years to come.Live Feeds in Marine Aquaculture is an essential purchase for anyone involved in marine aquaculture, including fish farmers, researchers, and personnel in feed and equipment companies supplying the aquaculture trade. An extremely valuable tool as a reference and practical manual for students and professionals alike; libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological and aquatic sciences and aquaculture are studied and taught, should have copies available on their shelves.

Book Description
Bivalve Molluscs is an extremely comprehensive book covering all major aspects of this important class of invertebrates. As well as being an important class biologically and ecologically, many of the bivalves are fished and cultured commercially (e.g. mussels, oysters, scallops and clams) in a multi-billion dollar worldwide industry.Elizabeth Gosling who has a huge wealth of research, teaching and hands on experience working with bivalves, has written a landmark book that will stand for many years as the standard work on the subject. Chapters in Bivalve Molluscs cover morphology, ecology, feeding, reproduction, settlement and recruitment, growth, physiology, fisheries, aquaculture, genetics, diseases and parasites, and public health issues. A full understanding of many of these aspects is vital for all those working in bivalve fisheries and culture. An essential purchase for anyone concerned with this important class of animals, copies of Bivalve Molluscs should be on the shelves of biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists, fisheries scientists and personnel within the aquaculture industry. Copies of the book should be available in all libraries and research establishments where these subjects are studied or taught.Elizabeth Gosling is based at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Galway, Ireland.

A little dated, but was ahead of it's time..........1998-02-14
Very technical, entirely comprehensive, and is still found in the bibliography of just about any serious scientific book on aquaculture. This is an excellent reference on filtration techniques, toxicity of common medications, calculating carrying capacity, and is just full of useful ideas and references. If you approach the hobby with a bit of scientist in you, this is a book you should have. When he wrote the book, no one in the hobby was doing protein skimmers, but he discussed them in detail here. Whatever the next big concept is, I wouldn't be surprised if he discussed it. This is a rare gem of a book.

Book Description
As the world 's population and the demand for seafood increase, the production of seafood from aquaculture has also seen massive increase and is set to continue. With wild stocks of many molluscan species depleted, aquaculture is firmly recognised as the means now, and for the future, of bridging the gap between the supply and demand of seafood. This important book covers the general biology of bivalves, hatchery culture methods and specific and comprehensive details of the cultivation of many commercially important species, including clams, oysters, mussels, scallops and abalone.Based on the author 's extensive experience and hands on research into this subject, Molluscan Shellfish Farming provides essential information for all involved in the culture of molluscs. The book will be particularly useful for aquaculture personnel on working fish farms and in academic research posts. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where aquaculture and biological sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this book available.Part of this book is based on a Buckland Lecture, sponsored by the Buckland Trustees

Book Description
Written in a folksy, down-to-earth style, this user-friendly guide to the night sky is designed for beginner and intermediate stargazers ages twelve and up. It begins with chapters explaining the stars, nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies—and what readers can expect to see from their own backyards with a modicum of equipment. New Jersey StarWatch then examines the major constellations, offering updated tales of the mythology surrounding them and detailing their seasonal movement in the sky. Later chapters delve into the moon, solar and lunar eclipses, planets, and "celestial extras" such as comets, meteor showers, and aurora borealis. The final chapter provides advice on purchasing a telescope and other stargazing equipment. Appendices include monthly star maps for New Jersey’s northern latitude, a local resource guide, and a list of New Jersey’s brightest stars.

Made me weep, several times.......2001-08-03
On impulse, I bought this book for a son-in-law who is a research scientist in immunology. I snuck in a read before I mailed it, and I was enthralled.
Being more of a logical than an emotional mind, I too rarely shed tears when reading a book. But in the case of Jerome Lejeune, his daughter Clara so captures the love and courage of the man, that I tear up again now as I write this review. The only other book I can remember affecting me this way is Henri Gheon's biography of the Cure d'Ars.
Now I must buy a second copy of the book to give to a long lost friend, a man who loved his Down Syndrome daughter. Bill is not of a theistic mind, and maybe this is the book he needs to encounter the love of God.
The nature of greatness.......2001-07-17
Dr. Lejeune was a great scientist and physician who was first and foremost a great human being. This is not a comprehensive bio, but rather an intimate memoir by a loving daughter. It suceeds in offering a revealing portrait of what a life lived with integrity to deeply held principles looks like. It allowed Dr. Lejeune to possess the courage and character to count the cost of taking an unpopular stand and to unflinchingly sacrifice wealth and prestige, including a nobel prize, to stand on his convictions. At peace with himself and God, he faced the end of life without apologies or bitterness. When I want to offer medical students a heroic role model I need look no futher.
Book Description
In Run with the Champions, award-winning running writer Marc Bloom feeds the voracious appetite of America's growing running population in two ways: by creating a unique system to objectively rank the nation's top 25 male and top 25 female runners of all time, and by revealing their little-known training secrets and strategies, from what they ate to how they trained for their biggest victories. Any average runner can benefit from the insights and advice offered by running legends like Frank Shorter, Alberto Salazar, Joan Samuelson, and Lynn Jennings. The rankings themselves are expected to create a buzz in the large running community, and the affiliation with Runner's World--the world's leading authority on running--will ensure credibility. This comprehensive book is at once an exciting compendium on elite runners and a terrific training manual.
Customer Reviews:
History + Tips.......2007-04-10
Tips for runners are combined with a history of some of America's best runners. This book is also a great motivational tool right before a race.
History and tips together.......2007-01-05
this book is a summary, biased or not, of history and tips for runners. It will be a nice reading for those who appreciate reading a little bit of history of famous American runners, as well as knowing the way they did to get there. If you are not into history or not looking for tips, maybe better not buy it. If you don't think american runners deserve that much credit, maybe not buy it either. If you don't care about who runs and enjoy it as pure as runners from Kenia do, than that's a nice book for you, as it was for me.
All Runners Should Own This Book!.......2005-08-14
I bought a used copy on Amazon Marketplace and it was the best three bucks I ever spent! Entertaining, informative and inspiring, it profiles fifty of the greatest runners in short but amazingly detailed and well structured chapters...complete with racing states, biographical info, training plan and memorable quotes. There is something for every runner in the book... I came away with many interesting ideas and memorable words of encouragement.
Light, easy to read. Great to throw in your gym bag or keep in the car for a quick-pick-me-up before a race or training session.
"Motivation has to come from within. I make up my mind to shoot for the moon. Even if I don't make it, I'll be among the stars." --Francie Larrieu Smith
Excellent Look at Best US Distance Runners: Bio/Workouts.......2005-05-03
This book surpassed my expecations because it not only masses the best all time U.S. distance runners of both sexes but Bloom does not just give you the workouts but includes compact and effective biographies on each runner that I found the most interesting of all. The fact that Frank Shorter was fair runner in his private HS years but later won the NCAA 10,000 meters is quite amazing and of course so are his marathon medals as well. Bill Rogers virtually borrow gear to get appropriately outfitted for a race (Pre sent him a pair of shoes he still has) and then runs his first 2:09 while stopping to tie his shoe (Bloom didn't mention that Rogers often stopped to drink water). Everyone remembers Jim Ryun but what about Billy Mills the great cinderella story gold medalist of the 64 Olymmpics and asthmatic Bob Schull who also wins in 64 in the 5000. Well both are covered extremely well and Schul wonders like Bloom where the top runners are of today (soccer suggests Bloom). Great personal nuggets of information plus a bit of where are they now in four pages on each athlete. The women are well represented with Doris Brown, the great miler and 800 runner Jan Merrill, Francie Laraeu, Pattie Catalano (2:27 marathon), Joan Bennoit and Mary Slaney. What's great about this book is that Bloom gives you a career look in the few pages he has on each athelete with their PR's and dates and locations along with their greatest acheivements, times, records and victories and touches of ther personal life (Schul's wife was his workout timer). For example both Slaney and Laraeu were well known milers and 1500 specialists but late in their careers both Francie Laraeu and Mary Decker Slaney ran excellent 10ks both qualifying for the Olympics late in their careers. Listed at the end of each chapter is a week out of one of their workouts during their peak period such as Frank Shorter doing intervals on the track with only 50 yards of rest just before the Olympics. Bill Rogers running almost 30 miles a day for over 200 miles a week. Mary Slaney and her impressive track workouts and Pre running 30 second 220s with a 40 second 220 (jog?) for two miles at an overall 9:20 pace. The book also includes recent stars like Bob Kennedy, Suzie Hamilton and Regina Jacobs (now shrouded in controversy).
The hardest part of the book is the rating system, outside the top 30, Bloom lists an honorable mention section but a few deserving folk seem to be missing. Bloom graciously invites you to submit anyone missed on email such as where is Rick Wolhoter the mid 70's dominate 800 meter specialist and later 1500 runner? He's the other guy that fell down in the heats at Munich. And can you believe that Rogers and Shorter still put in over 50 miles a week? If you follow U.S. distance running this is the book. Bloom also has an intro that sounds like "Where have all the U. S. distance runners gone?" He'll give you his best answer.
a decent introduction.......2004-11-13
If you don't know much about the history of American distance running, this book will give you a good introduction. Each runner profiled gets only 3 pages, though. Of course the result is that the book is super-formulaic and gets boring after a while.
The info on how the elites trained is very interesting. However, at its root this book is written in the Runner's World style: it's stated purpose is to promote the advancement of American distance running, while the book itself is a work of mediocrity that promotes only mediocrity.
In addition to 50 profiles, Bloom also includes a long essay on how to make Americans competitive again on the international stage. The essay is more of a fanatical diatribe than a thought-out exposition; Bloom never really even explains why he believes distance running is so much more important than any other sport. He has all these plans to coerce kids into joining cross country teams and he chastises Americans for being lazy and always seeking the short-term payoff. I don't understand why Bloom has the right to cast the accusing finger at US runners - he stated himself in the book that he was never a very good runner in high school (and apparently never became good after that, either), and as far as I can tell the only coaching he has done is at the high school level. I just can't help but think of this guy as some failed jock who spends the rest of his life hanging on to the sport for lack of anything better to do with himself.
For an excellent book of sketches of famous runners, read Kenny Moore's "Best Efforts".
Customer Reviews:
A Very Fine Chinese Textbook.......2007-07-30
My travels to China inspired me to begin learning Chinese. I just completed this beginning text with my native Chinese tutor, and I cannot believe how much I have learned! This book presents the language in a well-structured method, offering grammar, vocabulary, sentence patterns, review exercises and cultural notes. The accompanying CDs ensure correct pronunciation and a chance to develop your ear for the spoken language. In my opinion, the book has everything! I can already carry on a little conversation in Chinese. Now it is on to the intermediate book in the same series!
Text Ok, CD's Terrible.......2007-04-06
This text book is okay, but not stellar as far as language texts go. There doesn't seem to be enough practice dialogue or examples of how the words are used in everyday conversation. It just needs to be fleshed out a little - the information is too sparse. The accompanying CD's, however, are TERRIBLE. They rush through the words and conversation with no pause at all, so you have no time to even figure out what they are saying, much less try to repeat it yourself. There is no repetition either. I don't use the CD's at all anymore - they're useless.
Very nice book.......2007-03-28
I just got this book and am pleased with the presentation and the CD's. It is for the absolute beginner, which is great! However if you are accustomed to "learn in your car" style language series, you will either be disappointed or at the very least, surprised.
The book is written with the idea that it is used in a classroom setting, which for undisciplined learners may be frustrating. It also assumes that you have a firm grasp on the technical details of the English language, so if you struggled in high school English with things like verbs, adverbs, participles, sentence structure, etc. you will probably find the discussion frustrating.
The CD is intended to be listened to while you read the chapter exercises. It's not a pronunciation CD; personally I read the lesson with it, and later just turn the CD on in the background at work so that I can get used to hearing the language. Again, BEGINNER Chinese. You aren't going to be an expert speaker at this level, you just need to learn the foundations of the language and the sounds. To that end, this book is great.
It's a great introductory book that is inexpensive, and by the end of it you will know if you want to continue studying the Chinese language.
Excellent tool for learning Mandarin.......2007-03-15
I have been teaching Mandarin Chinese for years and this book is one of the best Mandarin textbooks I have seen. It is easy to understand, and also includes useful vocabulary, grammar, and cultural notes in each lesson. Along with the book, there are 2 audio CDs with recordings of the dialogues from the book. I highly recommend it.
Excellent learning tool.......2007-02-07
Yong Ho does a superb job of presenting both the written and verbal language in this "basic chinese" guide book and audio CD's. I agree with all of the positive reviews thus far, as well as a few of the negative ones. For the price, the value of this book to someone learning mandarin chinese is indispensible. Let me add some additional comments:
- There is no "fluff" in this book. It's basic, simple, and (most importantly) well organized. Sure it's not 100% perfect, but good enough.
- It's a small and light book - perfect for traveling.
- I agree that first 15 pages is technical but if you are serious about learning this language it is very relevant material and well written. Who says you have to read it first? Just skip it and go directly to Chapter 1.
- The language points and insights added to the learning experience and value of this golden book.
- The audio CD's were clear and perfectly usable. Tracks 1-3 of CD#2 does indeed not match page 151. The vowels were "hidden" next to page i (Intro)

Product Description
The excellent solos in this book are performance-quality improvisations on jazz-blues standards. If you are a rock, folk, country, or blues guitarist looking to advance to the next level, these solos will help you develop more variety in your phrasing, improved familiarity with the fingerboard, a vastly improved ear, and enhanced conceptual abilities.
The solos are for guitarists with intermediate, or better, skills. Each tune is arranged in standard notation and tablature, and recorded note-for-note on the companion CD.
Solos: Alberta; Careless Love; Corrine, Corrina; Every Night When the Sun Goes In; Hesitation Blues; Jada; Lonesome Road; Make Me a Pallet on the Floor; Nobody's Business; St. James Infirmary; Sporting Life Blues; Willie the Weeper.
Product Description
Legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Hubert Sumlin, T-Bone Walker, Johnnie Winter, Albert King, Freddie King, and Chuck Berry are known to all blues fans for their remarkable soloing abilities.
But the complete blues guitarist must do more than shine in the solo spotlight. And that is why every great soloist is also a great fill-in player.
Tasteful fill-in licks support and inspire the singer while adding fire and drive to the performance. For example, Blind Lemon Jeffersons string-snapping fill-ins provided the perfect complement for his rough-hewn blues songs. Both Louis Armstrong and Lester Young seemed to talk to the singer with their finely-crafted, jazzy fill-ins. And Henry Sunflower Vestines stinging, buzzsaw fill-ins never failed to drive his Canned Heat bandmates into a psychedelic frenzy.
This book is accompanied by a user-friendly split-track CD allows you to sit in with a professional blues band while you learn to play blues fills behind a great singer, Charles Adkins. The Heat-Seeking Missile Blues Band is heard on the left channel; the fill-in licks are isolated on the right channel.
This is not just another book of abstract how do I use these licks in real life? licks, but a collection of solid musical ideas that can be applied to thousands of real songs. Another fine contribution from Red Dog Music Books, designed for the early intermediate-to intermediate guitarist. Some of the licks are accessible to highly motivated near-beginners, and the book is an excellent resource for teachers.
Product Description
Blues guitar teachers, serious students, and blues band guitarists will all enjoy his large collection of 100% pure blues and boogie solos for guitar. Twenty-five exciting solos are presented here, each played over its own rhythm progression.
Every solo is transcribed in both standard notation and tablature, and played note for-note with a full band on the professionally recorded companion CD.
This book is for the intermediate, or better, guitarist whose interests include authentic, non-commercial blues musicthe good stuff that is seldom heard via mass-market channels such as radio and television.
Guitar teachers might use the book to introduce new hand positions, fingerings, chords, and theoretical concepts.
Each solo is made up of many interesting phrases (licks) that can be adapted and incorporated into your own style.
The solos are relatively challenging, and can be used in blues jams and on stage.
Another SUPER COOL and USEFUL music book by Larry McCabe.

Book Description
And day now the big man with the cigar might be arriving on the ferryboat--the man that Pete's father is terrified to see.
So three times a day, when the ferry is due at the island, Pete jumps on his bike and races to see if the big man will get off the boat. In Pete's pocket is a quarter, so he can rush to the telephone and warn his father.
It is not until almost the end of summer that Pete finds out why his father is so afraid. But in the meantime he has met eleven-year-old Rootie, an old-timer on Cutlass Island, who shows him the island newcomers never see--and who helps him face the danger when it finally arrives.

The Bones in The Cliff
This is one of my favorite books. It was one of James Stevenson's books. I think he is a pretty good writer. I like how he worded the whole book. He really makes things interesting. There really wasn't anything I didn't like about his book. It isn't a very long book either, that's something I like. I like the types of book that are interesting but not a very lengthy book. Most of the books I've read have been real long and don't get interesting. That's why I like books from Stevenson. I would recommend this book to anyone over any other book in the library.
It's a 10 star book.......1998-12-08
This book was great. It was the best and it was a very great thriller. If a hitman was after me dad I don't think I would be as brave as Pete!
