Book Description
Your project went off without a hitch--but somebody else got the credit...You averted a crisis brilliantly--but no one noticed...You came to the meeting with a sensational idea--but it was ignored until someone else said the same thing...
HOW CAN YOU GET CREDIT & GET AHEAD?
In her extraordinary international bestseller, You Just Don't Understand, Deborah Tannen transformed forever the way we look at intimate relationships between women and men. Now she turns her keen ear and observant eye toward the workplace--where the ways in which men and women communicate can determine who gets heard, who gets ahead, and what gets done.
An instant classic, Talking From 9 to 5 brilliantly explains women's and men's conversational rituals--and the language barriers we unintentionally erect in the business world. It is a unique and invaluable guide to recognizing the verbal power games and miscommunications that cause good work to be underappreciated or go unnoticed--an essential tool for promoting more positive and productive professional relationships among men and women.

Learn how to get along........2007-02-28
This book provides a great information on how to get a long with others in the work places men or women, this book will give you skills needed for teamwork and a better working place enviornment.
A Must Read for Every Working Woman.......2007-01-02
I wish I would have read this book 20 years ago. It was an eye-opening experience. As a female executive working in a male-dominated profession, this book shed new light on interactions I've had with male colleages, bosses and employees where I felt something had been "lost in translation" but couldn't put my finger on why. Put another way, this book teaches you the other gender's "secret language."
In a dream world, this would be mandatory reading for all men in the workplace. Males who are not aware of these communication differences are likely not hiring or promoting talented female employees because they misconstrue their politeness for passiveness, or their humble remarks (or even self-degrading remarks) for lack of confidence, etc.
As a working woman, reading this book gave me an advantage. After reading it, I find myself using a different communication style now with males at work than I do with females at work. At least now I am aware of how the "female" communication style I naturally use is probably being heard by my male superiors. Likewise, as a boss I've put this book, along with "Who Moved My Cheese?", on the reading list for new hires.
Substantively, I felt the book could have used some major editing starting about half-way through where it became a bit tedious. But it's worth the read for the important lessons learned.
Lastly, others have criticized this book for not offering solutions to the problem. The solution is awareness. If both genders are aware of these communication differences, the problem is virtually eliminated.
interesting, however not useful.......2005-03-01
I listened to the audio book version of this book. At first, it seemed quite refreshing to know men and women were so different that you could explain in your work environment why people behaved like that. However, it just didn't give any solution and keep saying it over and over again in this book can bore anyone.
This book is more like a psychology paper rather than a practical handbook. The person who performed the book makes it more disturbing.
In one word, from this book, you will understand that people are so different that you can't expect others will think like you. Men are more hierachical and women are nice and think all men are equal. My understanding is that even if it is like this, you can only be yourself.
Interesting, but does not reflect all realities.......2004-11-21
The science of psycholinguistics is one of the hardest to write in, from what I see. For one, it's necessary to keep in mind that what may be the norm in a certain place for a certain time is not, de facto, what may apply to other places and periods. Also, the cultural influences on language happen to change fast, and the books that were relevant and up-to-date just a few years ago seem disappointingly irrelevant today.
Writing for a journal, where your research is given a proper time and place frame, is very different from writing popular versions made for the public at large. I recommend reading articles (Dr. Tannen has several that are excellent reads, among them _Gender in research on language - Researching gender-related patterns in classroom discourse_ Tesol Quarterly 30 (2): 341-344, from 1996) rather than books if you are truly interested in this topic.
As it is, and in spite of the good writing style, the book has far too many generalizations that do not apply to all places, nor do they apply to current times. I recommend "I Only Say This Because I Love You" instead, or even better, her articles.
A disappointment but still relevant book.......2004-06-08
I have read Deborah Tannen's first 2 books and I found them groudbreaking and very informative. This book however seems to be too much of a rehash of her first 2 books with a little bit of business communication stuck in the middle. I was disappointed by the book and believe there are better books out there than this one.
Book Description
Are your words working for you?
You say something at a meeting and it is ignored; then when someone else says the same thing, everyone embraces it as a marvelous idea. You devote yourself to a project, but don't get credit for the results. You give what you think are clear instructions, but the job is not done, or done wrong. Sometimes it seems you are not being heard, not getting credit for your efforts, not getting ahead as fast as you should.
Now, Deborah Tannen brings to the workplace the same voice, eye, and insight that made That's Not What I Meant! and You Just Don't Understand bestselling classics. In Talking From 9 to 5, she explores the special world of work -- where we spend countless hours with people we may not understand or even like, and where the way we talk determines not only how we get the job done, but how we are evaluated for our efforts. Offering powerful new ways of understanding what happens in the workplace, from the simplest exchanges to the complex contemporary issues of the glass ceiling, Tannen explains a variety of conversational styles and reveals how each of us can develop the flexibility and understanding we need.
Since the publication of You Just Don't Understand, Tannen has been told over and over, "Your book saved my marriage." Talking From 9 to 5 will have the same dramatic impact on those who are struggling with co-workers, jobs, and companies, and will help entire companies as well as individual women and men thrive in a working world made up of increasingly diverse workforces and ever-more competitive markets.

Analyzing the Communication Skills of the Opposite Sex.......2002-02-12
I feel that this book was very informational and useful with many instances in my life. It really gave me an insight to the reasons why people act how they do, and it made me comprehend my boyfriend and friends more. I have misunderstood them many times, and after reading parts of this book, I have realized what went wrong.
Deborah Tannen has effectively shown the differences between the communication styles of men and women. Although it doesn't tell either sex how to better their communication styles to close the gap, the book uses many examples of situations that people have encountered and can relate to which will help them better understand things that have happened in their life. It answers a lot of questions for a lot of people. This book is fairly easy reading, but you have to be mature to understand what is being said. If anyone is having problems with the opposite sex, then I strongly recommend this book.
Yakk..........2000-08-08
First, it would be nice to explain, that this book is targeted to (a) women, (b) women suffering from the lack fo self-confidence, (c) women suffering from the lack of self-confidence and comfortable with blaming men for sexism on a working place. It's just too much time spent on sexes relations instead of real communications problems. Of course, difference of male and female styles of communication is a problem, you have to keep in mind, but this is not the ONLY problem. Reading the review on a boook I expected advice on improving my communication skills, not to hear a bunch of regular feministic stream of accusations of the business world. It's just misleading, useless and very unpleasant. So if you want feminist propaganda, this book is for you, if you really want improve your skills, go somewhere else.
Good explanation of male/female communication differences........1999-10-15
This is a useful, interesting, provocative description of differences between men's and women's speech behaviors. Tannen takes an essentially socio-cultural stance in explaining the reasons for these differences. Not only does she present coherently her ideas, her speech is crisp and animated; thus, it is a delight to listen to her. This audio is an excellent introduction to Tannen's work on this subject. I ask students enrolled in my Gender and Communication course to listen to this edited tape in lieu of purchasing the book, as this proves to be an efficient alternative to reading the entire book. For instructors similarly inclined, I recommend purchasing two or three copies to be placed on reserve in the university library.
The book by Deborah Tannen is enlightening!.......1998-11-19
Not only I did I personally enjoy the content of this book, but I sincerely wanted my boyfriend, co-workers, and family to read it as well. Her insight is easily applied to everyday life and I appreciate her many references demonstrating her research instead of "pop psychology."
Deborah Tannen is not only highly respected by her colleagues in linguistics and communications around the world, but respected by readers everywhere!

Book Description
This is a book about farm animals, and what happens during one year on a farm.
In January, the cows stay in the barnyard, and the chickens don't lay many eggs. By March, you can tell spring is coming: the barn is filled with baby animals. Month by month, the animals at Maple Hill Farm sense the changing seasons and respond to the changes.
Through gently humorous text and charming illustrations, Alice and Martin Provensen capture one year at their beloved Maple Hill Farm in a way sure to delight city slickers and country folk alike.

A good book.......2007-06-16
We got this book as a companion to 'Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm'. I have to say, I love 'Our Animal Friends' best, but this is also a great book. I like it as a companion to Our Animal Friends. The book goes through the months of the year, and what happens with the animals in each month. Humorous and interresting for our 3 and 7 year olds.
daughter has enjoyed this since she was 2 y.o........2007-03-08
This book was a find at a yard sale and is a joy for both my husband and I as well as my daughter since she was 2. It introduces all kinds of subjects like veterinarian medicine, not to mention the obvious seasons cycle and life on a farm activities. The illustrations are simple and detailed enough to even keep an older childs attention.
This book is a must have for every child.......2006-09-21
I just bought this book for a gift, and seeing it on Amazon's website makes me want to go find it on my daughter's bookshelf, and read it myself. And I'm 43!
What a sweet, beautiful, educational, pleasure of a book. It's a great size with gorgeous illustrations. The text is fun to read and fun for a child to listen to, and the whole book is non-fiction and very educational. The perfect combination of a book. I just love it and love to give it! It just bounces and is very engaging. You'll want to read it every season for years.
Enjoy!
Outstanding in every way.......2002-06-03
This has been a favorite book of ours for years and years and years. "The Year at Maple Hill Farm" is written and illustrated by Alice and Martin Provenson. It documents, from January through December, the hard tasks and simple pleasures inherent in life on a farm--everything from bird migrations to the foaling of the horses to lazy summer days spent doing nothing more important swatting flies.
Humans and animals co-exist peacefully here. The illustrations are simple and gently colored, with subtle detail sprinkled throughout. The animals are given a great deal of personality (see especially the cats, who are wonderfully quirky) and the story itself, while utterly basic and free of frills, has an undertow of narrative propulsion that makes each page seem a natural outgrowth of the previous page.
I can't recommend the book highly enough. If you live in the country, you will recognize so much of what is here. If you live in the city, you will welcome the peaceful rhythms of this charming book.

Great Book.......2003-11-13
An excellent Denali guide if you're thinking about several route choices to research.
A great hiking book for mountaineers in the Southeast is Dixie 3000: A Hiking Guide to the Peaks in South Carolina Over 3000'. Mail Docbeaker@aol.com for more info.
Very good but only in imperial units.......2003-11-05
This book is definitely very good, with lot of useful information necessary for any expedition to Denali. It gives very good overview of all routes and potential hazards. Problem I have is that all of the numeric information is in imperial units ONLY. I understand that Alaska is part of US (since it is both from Russia in 1867) where the imperial system is predominant (but not official since Dec. 25th 1975 by "Metric Conversion Act"). It is true that most of the English speaking counties are familiar with imperial units, but it is true that English is mostly spread second language on the planet.
Denali is mountain that is climbed by mountaineers from all over the world, and I think that all of them could get better advantage of this book if the SI units are at least specified as secondary units. For now have you calculator ready and do conversion yourself.
1 inch - 2.54 cm; 1000 feet - 304.8m; 1 mile - 1.6 km; 32 degF - 0 degC / 0 degF - -17.7 degC, 1 pound - 0.45kg,...

Denali's West Buttress: A Climber's Guide to Mount McKinley's Classic Route.......2007-04-03
I've just received it and haven't had the chance to really "get into it". BUT ... the little I've read it seems to be just what I was wanting.
A mus have for the west but.......2007-01-09
Very detailed description of the classic route.
The very accurate photos are good complements to the map (not included with the book)
Trustworthy.......2006-02-24
This is one of only two books I would trust for reliable information about the West Buttress route of Denali. Very informative and practical!
Great Book.......2003-11-13
This an excellent guide if you've decided on the West Buttress route.
Also check out the Dixie 3000: a hiking guide to the peaks in South Carolina over 3000'. Lots of fun hikes in there. Contact Docbeaker@aol.com for more info.
Simple and to the point.......2002-02-09
This book was easy to read and provides a great historical overview of the mountain, what equipment you need and a detailed step by step guide to the West Buttress route with Maps from Brad Washburn. Although I would say this book is merely a warm up in the research you need to do and understand to climb Denali. A very practical guide.

As featured on NBC's Today Show! Read It! Play It! with Babies and Toddlers introduces new parents to the power of books, songs, stories and play at this crucial time in a child's development. The easy to follow format provides the resources, games and activiteis that new parents should have at their fingertips.
Customer Reviews:
A must give gift for new parents..........2007-03-19
Wouldn't it be nice if babies came with instruction manuals? Many of us have used Penelope Leach or Dr. Spock or others. Their advice is supplemented by the Oppenheim's very easy-to-follow approach to playtime with books.
The book develops suggestions for a basic library of laptime reading fun - and each entry is followed up with games and songs to play with your child.
I also recommend it as a gift for grandparents and non-parents (like friends who may not yet have kids) who may be looking for ways to interact with your new child, because the advice here is very practical, taking a common-sense approach. The book list also forms the basis of a great gift guide for infants and toddlers.
Not worth it.......2006-07-01
This book was not what I expected. I was really excited to read and maybe get some fresh ideas to spice up reading time but this wasn't it. I am not sure my expectations were met because I was a first grade teacher before having children but nothing in this book was very creative. I was disappointed to find their activities were some I was already doing with my girls and just basic common sense.
I love it.......2006-05-25
The recommended books are ordered by reader's age, making it very easy to select the ones that are appropriate for my child's current stage. It also provides a very good description about each book, and how it is different from other books in the same category.
I also like that it covers a good variety of books, including books with flaps, mirrors, and squeeky sound, as well as books with different themes and messages for older toddlers. The suggested activities are also fun and creative.
The most important thing is, my daughter loves those books. This book is definitely worth the price.
Great ideas of what to do with babies and toddlers!.......2006-02-10
Often times with babies, you run out of ideas of what to do with them. Their books, however sweet, are generally very short. This book provides some great ideas for parents on how to supplement that reading time, both in ways directly related to the book being read and in other ways that further their babies' development. This is a great resource for both worthwhile books and fun activities!
Great literature and fun activities!.......2006-01-25
This book has opened up a whole new world for me, my husband, and my son. What a great idea to link reading and play! Each night we choose a book to read and an activity to go along with it. I highly recommed Read It! Play It! with Babies and Toddlers to anyone who has a child!

This initial outing in a new mystery series features Jewel Averick and her sidekick, Dee Sweet, baseball wives married to players on the Washington Diamonds. Caught in a Rundown begins when Jewel discovers that her husband has paid $15,000 for a baseball glove that once belonged to Negro Leaguer "Two-Mile" McLemore. When a stranger appears at Jewel's front door offering $20,000 for the glove, Jewel takes him up on his offer but switches gloves at the last minute. Now Jewel has two men angry at her, and a mystery to solve--just who was "Two-Mile" McLemore, and why is the glove so important? The first clue is a note in "Two-Mile's" glove that directs her to Philadelphia, the first stop on a scavenger hunt that may lead to McLemore himself.
Customer Reviews:
A Homerun for Lisa!.......2001-07-09
Lisa Saxton's first novel is a fun, enjoyable read. The story of selfish, insensitive Jewel Averick and her polar opposite Dee Sweet as they track the mystery of Two-Mile Mclean's baseball mitt. Each woman has her own reasons fo tracking the glove: Jewel to show her husband that she is not a selfin spoiled person and Dee to show her husband that she is no doormat. Throw in a couple of gangsters and all bets are off as the race to home plate (I had to throw that in!) heats up. A good read, so much fun, this book will have you laugh out loud, on the edge of your seat and cheering out loud.
enjoyable reading!!!!!!!!!.......1999-08-05
i enjoyed reading this book and hope that the authors write another mystery. it had humor as well as mystery. please let me know when you are writing another book....
A Terrific Screwball Comedy-Mystery.......1999-05-31
Caught In A Rundown is a wonderful debut for author, Lisa Saxton. It's hard to believe this is her first novel. Jewel Averick and Dee Sweet, both unlikely sleuths, are like a couple of bulldogs with their teeth in a juicy steak once they latch onto the Two-Mile McLemore mystery. The exchanges between characters in this novel were always sharp, witty and kickin'. A delight throughout. I especially liked Jewel's extremely hip grandparents. Reminded me of my own. If you're the type of reader who likes a good brain teaser with the added bonus of a rollicking adventure then this is for you. Be warned however: you won't want to put it down. And when you do, your mind will be on the story, the characters, and what they could possibly be up to next.
a geat book.......1998-08-25
3 shouts to my homegirl from Cleveland for an outstanding crime thriller. I really enjoyed this book it took me 2 days only because I had to go to bed for work the next day. I am really looking forward to reading the next book about Jewel Averick and Dee Sweet.
A line drive deep... deep to the funnybone!.......1998-06-24
Even if you're not a real afficionado of the mystery genre (and I am not), you will still find Lisa Saxton's "Caught in a Rundown" to be one hugely entertaining read. Like a Hank Aaron home run, the story starts out fast ... and rises and rises ... getting really laugh-out-loud funny in no time at all.
Saxton has an excellent way of using dialog, and knows that what characters say and think is the most direct way to understanding them. The dialog is full of wit, energy and verve.
Besides the mystery (and it does keep the reader guessing), there is a very subtle interweaving of the importance of racial understanding in this tale. Through the zany exploits of Jewel and Dee, we learn the importance of confronting our uncomfortableness with racial differences, and laughing at our own awkwardness in achieving new understanding. By the end, we can clearly see that frienship transcends color ... in any inning of any game of life.
Lastly, I am a male reader (my wife bought the book but I swiped it from her)... and found the two female characters irresitably charming. And yes indeed, this book can be a riot of a movie -- just find actresses with the kind of chemistry that will do the book justice ... please!!!

Sophisticated teens will savor this psychological thriller by the author of Calling Home and In a Dark Wood. Set in the wealthy, self-indulgent Northern California culture that teens may interpret as the dark side of Clueless, Michael Cadnum skewers with deadly accuracy obsessions with body image, exquisite food, and the right clothes--and reveals the unspoken rage of kids who are given everything but attention. Cadnum's oblique but concrete style works to great advantage in this enigmatic story as he uses vivid images to convey experience--sights, sounds, smells, and tastes--but leaves the motivations of characters blank for the reader to fill in.
We witness Jennifer jogging at dusk, coolly flinging herself into the thorny blackberry brambles, tumbling down a slope, pausing to slam her hand against a pole, and then continuing up the road to find a police car and report that she has been the victim of an attempted rape. But why has she so carefully constructed this lie? Is it aimed at her beautiful and preoccupied parents, her domineering older sister, the boyfriend who has moved away, or her own emptiness? The deception soon takes over her life, and as a police detective backs her into a corner, Jennifer realizes there is only one way out. (Ages 14 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Jennifer Thayer went for a run, threw herself down a hill, and then filed a false police report, claiming that she fought off a rapist. Now the police are reassuring and sympathetic, and hardly anyone questions Jennifer's story. Friends and family express their concern, and the press is interested. But Jennifer can't hide from the only person who knows what really happened-herself.

Good concept, but.........2004-03-19
The beginning of this book was very well written in my opinion, as were the descriptions used throughout the story. However, I wasn't impressed with the character development throughout the story. The end was abrupt, and really turned me off. I probably would try reading some of the author's other books, but I just didn't care for this one.
disappointing.......2003-07-24
The concept of this book was interesting, and the beginning of it had potential, but towards the middle and definitely the end were disappointing. The ending made no sense, and the middle had little to do with the beginning and was uninteresting. The plot was unusual and could have been a much better story if written differently.
All-Around Good Book.......2001-09-16
I thought that this book was very entertaining. The book was very detailed and was very easy to follow. Though the book did have a mis-leading ending, I will give it 5 stars because I thought that it was ver well written. (results not typical)
interesting set-up, but...........2001-06-29
another book that was on my required reading list for school. it centers around jennifer thayer, daughter of two newly well-off parents who seem to care alot....about jennifer's older "perfect" sister. to get attention, jennifer fakes being assaulted, which brings on many more emotions then jennifer counted on. at first, i found the fast-moving action exciting, and the set-up promising. i even could identify with jennifer at some points. then, however, the story hit a point where i just didn't care anymore. to many side-plots that went nowhere were annoying. not the best book i've read, but not the worst.
Absolutely terrible!.......2001-03-16
This is one of the most poorly written books I have ever read. The language is simply awful! Meaningless similes, a barrage of pointless details, downright lame analogies, and a web of subplots that are never fully (or even partially) developed. One of the first rules of writing is to create a believable character, and I had a hard time believing that Jennifer would do anything but sulk and get in slapping matches with her equally 2-dimensional sister. She seemed incapable of having any emotion deeper than "feeling like a rhino." The ending is completely unsupported by the rest of the book, and just comes off as nowhere else to go. I thought the premise was fantastic--a fresh approach to the subject of rape in a generation where one word from a disgruntled kid is enough to wreck someone's life forever, but as a previous reviewer said, it runs out of steam before it even has a chance to take off.

BLOOD AND GOLD!
Deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle, far from the constraints of civilization, the wild and lawless town of Helldorado attracts only the most daring of visitors -- and the most foolhardy.
When Travis, the son of an underworld kingpin, disappears in the Amazon in search of a priceless artifact, Beck, the Kingpin's retrieval expert, is sent to get him. Despite their hostility -- and their love for the same woman -- the two must eventually join forces to fight the evil head of a gold-mining corporation who is after the same treasure.
But the jungle holds many dangers, as does the greed of Helldorado's ruthless inhabitants. Will Beck find treasure at the end of his perilous quest -- or only a swift and brutal death?
