        Book Description

Recent research suggests that the application of the old concepts of pasture management developed in Europe, USA and South Africa have been unsuccessful in the Tropics; in some areas under-utilisation has resulted in poor animal output and low economic returns, whereas in other areas overgrazing has resulted in soil erosion and weeds. This book sets out to examine the problems involved in the utilisation of tropical and subtropical pastures and to explain how pastures may be managed to meet the requirements of both plants and animals for growth and replacement. Following an overview of the livestock systems of the tropics, the effects of grazing animals on the edaphic, biotic and climatic environment of the pasture are described. The response of the animals to the available pasture are discussed in terms of pasture attributes of nutritive value and sward structure, selectivity and grazing behaviour. Methods for attaining continuity of forage supply are also described. The author, Professor L. R. Humphreys, has been involved for many years in extensive research of tropical and subtropical pastures. A central objective of his work has been to effect a synchrony between pasture available and the forage requirements of the animal. This book is a culmination of much of his research and will be invaluable to all disciplines with an interest in tropical and subtropical agricultural practices.

                  Description:
Ten benzene-exposed oil refinery workers were genotoxicologically monitored in an annual follow-up study between 1990 and 2003 and compared with 87 industrial and 26 matched controls. Each of the exposed subjects suffered from several intercurrent non-infectious diseases such as joint, rheumatic, gastric and dental problems, as well as kidney and liver dysfunctions. The structural chromosome aberration (CA) yields of the exposed donors suggested a dose-dependent response to the mean peak benzene concentrations in the ambient air. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE), high-frequency SCE, DNA repair, and cell proliferation data also indicated the presence of genotoxic exposure at the workplace. The results of the biological and genotoxicological monitoring indicated the need of intervention (primary prevention of occupational exposure-related chronic non-infectious diseases) including the introduction of zero tolerance of benzene emission, health control, and education with motivation to change life-styles. The decrease in CA frequencies considered as the most established genotoxicological effect markers indicated the positive changes due to the achieved zero tolerance at the workplaces. The results also demonstrated the effectiveness of a trilateral co-operation between the health services, the employer and the employee in order to reduce the risk of the exposure-related intercurrent non-infectious diseases and to prevent further deterioration of the health state of the workers.

                    Description:
Translesion DNA synthesis (TLS) is one of the mechanisms involved in lesion bypass during DNA replication. Three TLS polymerases (Pol) are present in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae: Pol @z, Pol @h and the product of the REV1 gene. Rev1 is considered a deoxycytidyl transferase because it almost exclusively inserts a C residue in front of the lesion. Even though REV1 is required for most of the UV-induced and spontaneous mutagenesis events, the role of Rev1 is poorly understood since its polymerase activity is often dispensable. Rev1 interacts with several TLS polymerases in mammalian cells and may act as a platform in the switching mechanism required to substitute a replicative polymerase with a TLS polymerase at the sites of DNA lesions. Here we show that yeast Rev1 is a phosphoprotein, and the level of this modification is cell cycle regulated under normal growing conditions. Rev1 is unphosphorylated in G1, starts to be modified while cells are passing S phase and it becomes hyper-phosphorylated in mitosis. Rev1 is also hyper-phosphorylated in response to a variety of DNA damaging agents, including treatment with a radiomimetic drug mostly causing double-strand breaks (DSB). By using the chromosome spreading technique we found the Rev1 is bound to chromosomes throughout the cell cycle, and its binding does not significantly increase in response to genotoxic stress. Therefore, Rev1 phosphorylation does not appear to modulate its binding to chromosomes, suggesting that such modification may influence other aspects of the TLS process. Rev1 binding under damaged and undamaged conditions, is at least partially dependent on MEC1, a gene playing a pivotal role in the DNA damage checkpoint cascade. This genetic dependency may suggest a role for MEC1 in spontaneous mutagenesis events, which require a functional REV1 gene.

                              4 out of 5 stars Wrong Year.......2007-03-05

I love this book, but someone ought to tell Bill Goldberg (The Whistle Story)that the Bucky Dent playoff game was 1978 not 1977. What true NYY fan - from the Bronx, no less - not only doesn't know that, but let's it get to print??????????? Pretty shameful if you ask me.

                              5 out of 5 stars very inspiring.......2004-05-18

this book was very inspiring. The stories are all well written and ammussing. I haven't read any of the other books in the series and I don't plan on reading them either but I really enjoyed this one though and I recomend this book to all baseball fans

                              5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2002-12-27

As a baseball fan, I thought it was wonderful to read about the many sides of baseball. There are stories from both fans and people actually involved in the baseball world. With baseball having such a depressing last couple of years, and not having the results as we have come to expect, it was wonderful to know that there are people in the world that still love this sport! I am one of them. :o)
(I would have said still the American sport, but since I am Canadian I don't think that always applies...)

5 out of 5 stars A great book about baseball and life lessons.......2002-04-25

Chicken Soup For The Baseball Fan's Soul is one great book. The stories are about personal experiences, humor, sportsmanship, life lessons, and the fun that baseball provides.

Some of the stories are actually written by the athletes themselves with others by journalists who have covered the games with their views on the game and the players, and other stories by the everyday sports fan just like you and me. Some of the stories are very humorous while others touching. Before each chapter are very inspiring quotations. Added between some of the stories are baseball comics that will make you laugh.

Every story in this book is well worth-reading from the humorous to the serious stories. This book made tears swell in my eyes and laugh out loud in some stories as a baseball player. This book will inspire the true baseball player or fan. This book is easy to get into it and want to keep reading for a long time, but is also a great book to read one story at a time.

This book really shows how hard you have to work to get better at baseball or any sport and how it can pay off. This is a must-read book for any baseball fan who wants to enjoy a great book about a great sport.

It is a very useful book to read and very practical. The author is very realistic and more into being in action rather than academically written. The funny thing that he keeps talking about the type writer rather than the PC. The book was last published in 1985. Go buy it.

                              Secrets of the Sacred Pompon

Pompons aren't just for pep rallies anymore...

Who knows what evil lies beyond the oven door? Jendra MacKenzie knows -- it's a strangely powerful pompon that turns bright-eyed cheerleaders into gray-eyed monsters. But what she doesn't know is how to explain the unusual events unfolding at Davy Crockett School ever since ultra-popular Tina Shepard handed her a coyote head and made her the cheerleading mascot. Who's responsible for the sudden disappearance of the last mascot, and the principal's pants...and the principal?

When Jendra searches for answers, she finds nothing but trouble. Propelled by powers she can't control, she winds up disco dancing on top of her desk, flying to a faraway dentist's office, and dodging falling eighth-graders in the second-story girls' bathroom. If this trend toward the bizarre continues, she might even pass pre-algebra...unless the cheerleaders have something more sinister in mind...

Bizarre things are happening at Jendra MacKenzie's school. The cheerleaders' mascot, Chrystal, and the school principal mysteriously disappear. Then the gorgeous head cheerleader invites Jendra -- totally not a cheerleader type -- to be initiated into the cheerleader's conclave. As part of her initiation, Jendra worships a sacred glass-enclosed pompon that gives the cheerleaders special powers. Jendra gets the gift of dance, but not what she had in mind; when she hears the word "hungry" she dances uncontrollably until someone happens to say "turkey". And when one of the cheerleaders gets sick of having to get rid of people who are a threat to them, she devises a plan for freedom -- a plan her fellow cheerleaders may not like!

I picked this book up at the Dollar Store for, you guessed it, a whole dollar. Which is good news for me: It's probably only worth that dollar.

Night of the Pompon (which is different from the spelling I'm used to, "pom-pom") is very amusing as long as you don't take it too seriously. The characters are cliche, one dimensional, and read like the author was trying way too hard to make them seem real. We're given useless information every page or so, just because the author feels like telling us.

I think this book could have been a 5 star, quality read, if only the supernatural elements of the story had been prove false rather than oh-so-real. The supernatural elements really made me laugh at how ridiculous they were. Nothing felt right. It was so campy! It deserves its one star, just for making me and my friend laugh (I read it out loud on car rides, and used different valley girl accents for the characters- try it some time! Makes the book a lot of fun if you're sharing your amusement with someone else.)

Overall, this book still needed a lot of work before it ever saw the light of day. It's a cute romp through Jendra's wacky life- and makes me wonder if perhaps the girl wasn't skitzo, or delusional. Maybe she hit her head in that bathroom and there's a missing chapter at the end where she wakes up :)

Recommended for middle school readers, not for older young adult readers, and not as a good example of what young writers are capable of.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious spoof of the teen horror genre........2000-10-15

Jendra MacKenzie is a pretty ordinary, unpopular seventh-grader who is, to her dismay, flunking algebra. One day in the girls' bathroom at school, a shoe drops from the ceiling. That's the start of a totally weird series of events. Because the shoe has a piece of pompon on it, she shows it to the cheerleaders, who discover it is the principal's shoe (turns out someone stole the principal's socks, shoes, and pants that morning). Tina, the most popular girl in school and leader of the cheerleaders' clique, asks (well, ask is a loose word - more like FORCES) Jendra to become the mascot for the cheerleaders. After a super-weird initiation ritual in which she discovers the cheerleaders worship a "sacred" pompon, she's had enough. But the cheerleaders won't let her leave. Is she truly doomed? This was a hilarious spoof of school cliques, cheerleaders, and the teen horror genre.
