Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Most of science journalist K.C. Cole's journey into nothing is about physical nothing. "In the quantum realm, even nothing never sleeps. Nothing is always up to something. Even when there is absolutely nothing going on, and nothing there to do it."
The nothingness of the vacuum is the background to space and time. Cole shows how physicists' ideas about time, space, and reality flow out of their ideas about nothing, whether vacuum or ether. She writes with a half-smile and a glint of humor in her eye, colliding metaphors like particles at Fermilab:
.... Both space and time, individually, are as elastic as bungee cords. It was a further step, still, to see that the fabric of spacetime itself could warp under the influence of matter like hot asphalt under the tires of a heavy truck.... And then, the last straw: Not only could spacetime bend under the influence of matter, it could take matter into its own hands.
Cole's book makes a wry, witty complement to Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe. It's an exploration of string theory (among other things) that will leave your brain only lightly tied up in knots. Or in nots. After all, as Cole writes:
Nothing may be the single most prolific idea ever to plop into the human brain.... Understanding nothing matters, because nothing is the all-important background upon which everything else happens.
--Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
An adventure into the heart of Nothing by bestselling author K. C. Cole.
Once again, acclaimed science writer K. C. Cole brings the arcane and acad-
emic down to the level of armchair scientists in The Hole in the Universe,
an entertaining and edifying search for nothing at all. Open the newspaper
on any given day and you will read of a newly discovered planet, star, and
so on. Yet scientists and mathematicians have spent generations searching
the far reaches of the universe for that one elusive state-nothingness.
Although this may sound like a simple task, every time the absolute void
appears within reach, something new is discovered in its place: a black hole,
an undulating string, an additional dimension of space or time-even another universe. A fascinating and literary tour de force, The Hole in the Universe is a virtual romp into the unknown that you never knew wasn't there.

Exploring Nothing.......2007-02-05
This book has had wonderful and horrible reviews. I will take a middle ground. My main criticism is that it has a certain lack of focus and that some chapters do not correspond to the title. Cole tries to talk about the philosophical Nothing, the physicist's vacuum and the mathematician's zero, mingled with Buddhism. I was tempted to abandon the book after the first few pages feeling betrayed by the subject. Happily, I continued. So, is the book worth reading? Yes. Would the book be a better one with more focus on the main subject? Definitely, yes.
I would also appreciate that when the author speaks about "nothing", either she uses inverted commas or majuscules.
There are also a few errors as when in page 201 she indicates that the acceleration due to Dark Energy revved up in the "not too distant past", which, according to astronomers, is about 5 billion years. However, I discovered some new things and read it through in one weekend. There are good analogies and good citations.
Engaging and easily comprehended discussion of developments in modern physics.......2006-03-28
This highly unusual book presents an utterly engaging and easily comprehended discussion of many of the latest developments in modern physics.
K. C. Cole explains how the apparent emptiness of space between stars and galaxies - which she calls "Nothing," must contain something that completes the equations of modern physics. Nothing also exerts a powerful force. The universe is expanding at an accelerating pace. There is no way to explain this expansion without resorting to a "hidden factor" that produces the acceleration, and Nothing fits perfectly in this gap. (I prefer to capitalize Nothing but Cole leaves it in lower case, which often produces startling and humorous statements.)
"I hope to convince the reader that nothing matters. Most of modern physics and mathematics would be unthinkable without it. The human mind we use to perceive and explore those worlds relies on notions of "nothing" in very tangible ways - creating something out of nothing as handily as it does the reverse." (p. xi)
"Space isn't empty; what we think of as empty space is permeated by powerful influences. Indeed, matter itself is only the energetic geometry of forces in empty space." (p. 69)
While most readers untrained in science would expect to not understand much in a book that explores advanced theories of physics, nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to this book. Cole has a gift for explaining complex theories in simple terms and images.
Cole gives brief acknowledgement to the overlaps of transpersonal awarenesses and modern physics - as in Buddhist awareness of emptiness.
Cole presents her discussion in little bytes, punctuated with quotes from physicists that counterpoint Nothing in particular.
My only criticism of this gem: While a substantial list of references is provided, many quotes and points of discussion are presented without references.
Nothing But a Waste of Time (And Space).......2006-02-03
This book is crap. If you want to read 254 pages of contradicting theories backed up by little to no fact, this is the book for you. The one interesting and revelatory thing that I did pick up from this book is that the work produced by modern physicists is largely insubsantial and speculatory. The theories presented to explain space and time are no better than those created by those ancient Greek thinkers and philosophers who happened to have been proven wrong about things, or perhaps those of your average back-alley lunatic. These physicists, who should more likely be called sophists, simply pull from their anterior regions fantastic, thouroughly imaginitive structures to apply to the workings of the universe, simply because they truly have no legitimate answers.
Seriously, I'm an average guy, though fairly well educated, and I'm telling you, if you're the snooty, self-important type of intellectual who likes to make up smart sounding stuff (yeah, I said "stuff") just for the sake of sounding intelligent, and would like to read this book simply for the sake of self-indulgence, then you've found the perfect read. Otherwise, steer clear of this long, boring, and incredibly redundant pile of feces.
Boring and off the topic.......2005-09-23
this book is so boring and anyone without any education can write a book like this.
Even the absence of something is still something........2005-07-13
I walked into a local book store and was browsing with no intent to purchase anything. That was before I saw The Hole in the Universe. The book seemed to stand out on the shelve, calling to me. I had decided to purchase it before I even touched it. I have often and long contemplated the idea of nothing. I used to stare at the stars and imagine what the edge of the universe must be like. How could all this something abrubtly end and what would that nothing be like? Needless to say this was the perfect book to bring me up to speed on the state of mainstream physics today.
The book is brilliantly written, clear and as simplified as I imagine is possible considering the subject matter. For anyone looking to brush up on thier understanding of the universe, this book is an excellent start.
On a personal note, I picked this book up because I am a free energy researcher. I was am looking for holes in the mainstream explanation of the universe that would allow for free energy. There are plenty.

Book Description
Throw faster, improve your technique, learn new pitches, lower your ERA, and experience the thrill of winning more often with The Softball Pitching Edge.
This book offers an in-depth look into the art and science of softball pitching that will help you develop elite-level fastpitch skills through drills and expert technical advice. As the owner and pitching instructor at Club K, author Cheri Kempf has been teaching and training thousands of fastpitch softball players since 1987 and is widely recognized as one of the best softball pitching coaches in the country.
The Softball Pitching Edge shows the correct way to deliver the ball from the rubber to the plate to maximize effectiveness and minimize the risk of injury. It's the first book on fastpitch softball to dissect the pitching motion through pictures and drawings of the correct mechanics. It also explains how to master those mechanics so that you can throw with greater control and speed.
The text covers all the essentials: presentation, feet, legs, arms, posture, sequence, timing, consistency, location, and speed. You'll find a breakdown of the fundamental mechanics, with details of common mistakes and plenty of drills to help develop the proper mechanics. You'll also find specific instruction on developing a variety of pitches, including the drop, the change-up, the rise, the curve, and the screwball. And the special tips for coaches provide insight into the pitcher's psyche, background, mental make-up, and motivation.
The Softball Pitching Edge presents the best information based on the most modern technology and resources available. Use this book to improve your technique and add new pitches to your arsenal for more strikeouts and greater success on the mound.
Customer Reviews:
Best Fastpitch Pitching Resource Available.......2006-04-25
This is by far the best resource for learning the mechanics of windmill pitching. It's great for beginners and advanced pitchers.
Good for an established pitcher.......2004-10-30
Cheri Kempf has written a fine book for the established female pitcher. She also makes a few attempts to relate her wisdom to the coaching of the beginner, but that is where I find this book most lacking. My daughter just began pitching this year, and I'm really searching for something that gives instruction from day one. Kempf gives numerous drills that are wonderful for correcting mistakes in the established pitcher's form, but I just felt that it lacked the beginning steps that I was looking for.
While the book did correct a number of things that my daughter had been taught--like worrying about "opening the gate and closing the gate" with the hips, which Kempf says is worthless and can lead to knee injuries--I wanted more for the beginner. However, if you, your daughter or a girl you coach IS an established pitcher who is looking to correct bad habits, learn new pitches, learn how to mentally prepare for games and the like, I doubt there is a better book out there. It just didn't fill all of my needs.
One thing in an earlier review that I must comment on: why on Earth would someone criticize this book because there is a picture of Amanda Freed on the cover? There are also pictures of Michelle Smith and Lisa Fernandez within the book which are put there to give the reader an idea of correct form. Do I know what Kempf's connection is to any of these women? No, but I do know that those photos could not have been used without permission from each woman. The women concerned obviously don't have a problem with their likenesses being used in the book, so how could anyone else complain about it?
Excellent mechanics for the fastpitch student.......2003-12-07
Without a doubt, the finest book I have ever read dealing with the accurate approach for the fastpitch female pitcher. By follwing the detailed analysis that Cheri brings from her many years of experience, one can see the kinetic breakdown of the pitching motion in step by step form. I have picked up many ideas and pointers to use with my daughter, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about the proper mechanics of fastpitch softball pitching.
Cheri Kempf or Amanda Freed?.......2003-03-03
Why do you feature Amanda Freed on your cover? Did she contribute to this book? Are you her coach?
Customer Reviews:
HORRAY!.......2007-10-08
I purchased this book for an English course three years ago. Unfortunately, sometime in the last year or so, I lost it. I actually had to buy it again because I keep going to the bookshelf to reference it, and then remember it's not there. This book is just as useful in my everyday life as it once was in college. You probably need it too.
A Must Reference.......2007-09-22
This book (or something like it) is a must for an author's reference library.
It talks about the writing process: how to get started, writing drafts, editing. It talks about structuring sentences, punctuation, mechanics, etc.
It's got red tab dividers, so you can easily consult the book.
A good handbook to have.
keys for writers.......2007-06-12
great book to use throughout life not just in the class room for becoming a good writer
Great writing reference.......2006-11-06
It is a good handbook for writing. It is brief, to the point and easy to follow. Great tips for research and becoming an improved writer.
Good for 1st year english..........2006-03-27
This book is laid out and designed to be used for quick reference regarding grammar, citations, etc. with information in well organized sections. This book is similar to many other writing `handbooks', it is important to know which one your professor would like you to use. It had plenty of information for MLA, but it glosses over other styles rather quickly.

Interesting Introduction to Romance for Teenagers.......1999-03-26
The plot was fascinating, kind of like the picture brides of the past. Fierce women are shipped to a town, believing it's a large city, only to find it be be out in the middle of nowhere. Females will love these romances, adults may also. Very graphic at times, but nothing raunchy.
For the next generation of Danielle Steel and Sandra Brown readers, this is where you start.
Great book!.......1998-05-28
