A timeless classic in how complex information should be presented graphically. The Strunk & White of visual design. Should occupy a place of honor--within arm's reach--of everyone attempting to understand or depict numerical data graphically. The design of the book is an exemplar of the principles it espouses: elegant typography and layout, and seamless integration of lucid text and perfectly chosen graphical examples. Very Highly Recommended.

Tufte's Classic Is A Must Read In Our Statistical Times.......2007-10-06
This book established Tufte as the authority on the subject of graphs, charts, tables, indeed the display of data by any means. The book is readable by most anyone and will add to your library and your ability to make your way intelligently and critically through the flood of statistical and graphical arguments and pitches placed before us every day.
Simply and confidently Tufte lays out the basics of the right and the wrong, the good and the bad (and occasionally ugly) regarding graphical depictions of data and information.
This book (The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, 2nd edition )is the first and the foundation of four books by Tufte (I. The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, 2nd edition. II. Envisioning Information. III. Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative. IV. Beautiful Evidence.) that should be read in the order of publication. You will be a wiser person for the effort.
His short book, "The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint: Pitching Out Corrupts Within", while not part of the "four volume set" is a withering attack on the ubiquitous software program, an attack based on the fact that it encourages the user to break nearly every principle that Tufte has spent the last 20 years elucidating in his books regarding the reading and the writing and presentation of well thought out and presented arguments and reports. I've read it and was convinced; PP constrains complex thought, argument, and statistical (indeed any form of) reasoning with its "bullet points", and is a very inefficient means of depicting information as well, cluttering the display space with useless clip art, huge fonts, and often misleading cookie-cutter graphs. (His satirical PP presentation of the Gettysburg Address humorously makes his points, while his analysis of a very real NASA PowerPoint slide from the decision-making meetings regarding the danger to the Space Shuttle Columbia before its destruction on re-entry makes his points in a very sobering manner.)
All this being said, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information is a Great Book. In the internet age we all spend many hours per week looking at visual depictions of information. Tufte's book will make you a more critical user of nearly everything, from the newspaper, to websites, to work presentations, the sports pages, and even your car's speedometer and other gauges. It is the foundation to all of his published work from the last two decades.

Essential for anyone working with charts and graphs.......2007-03-10
This book fuses mathematical information with art to tell the underlying story and get your message across to the viewer. I would reccommend it to anyone responsible for conveying objective information to others.
Good ideas, nice layout, kinda rambling though.......2007-03-08
This book was very nicely laid out, and the ideas for presenting were good. Sometimes it was a little hard to follow because it rambled a little. But I did get some good pointers that I can use to visualize my data.
Fascinating. Quick. Friendly for the non-expert.......2007-01-09
The book strikes a good balance between major concepts and academic nitty-gritty.
An absolutely superb book........2006-11-23
Tufte presents an examination of a frankly under-esteemed method of data analysis that can be accurately described as passionate. As a Behavioural Scientist trained in sophisticated methods of statistical analysis, I previously was arrogantly inclined to regard charts and graphs as simplistic and naive approaches to data interpretation. However, I now apprehend the undeniable utility of graphical representation, and have acquired a fascination with the field through Tufte's contagious enthusiasm.
If you work with data of any form, it is IMPERATIVE that you read this book.
Customer Reviews:
I love these books.......2006-05-30
I don't yet have the new edition, so these comments are on the 1983 edition. I know that some people who work with graphics find these books less than useful, but I think that if you think about and create figures, these books are brilliant. This is also a physically beautiful book. If you've heard of Tufte, but never remember what's in each look, The Paris train schedule example is here, plus Napoleon's march on Moscow and a very striking example of how a table fails to show information that a set of plots does. There is much here on distortion, and how the mind understands visual information before reading the text around it; reasons to improve the data/ink ratio in graphics, and ways to do this. Tufte's nomination for `Worst graphic of all time' is here, too. Useful if you are willling to think. Maybe less useful if you want cookie-cutter solutions to design problems, but that's NOT me.

Excellent Book.......2004-06-18
This is the best book anyone will find in Organizational Commitment and Conflict area.
Book Description
In 1892, a stocky Danish immigrant named Magnus Jensen rode into south-central Montana. He liked what he saw and staked his future on the ranch he would carve there.
Today, DAN AADLAND and his wife Emily live on the ranch built by Magnus Jensen, Emily's grandfather. More than a century has passed, but the nature of ranching in Montana is little changed. Sensitive to the timelessness of the land, author Aadland approaches his ranching life as Thoreau approached life at Walden. On the framework of one recent year, Aadland brings ranching to life. In simple but moving prose, he evokes the harsh beauty of the West, writing with as much elegance about breaking a colt as he does about the inner lives of cattle, the way his pickup handles in the snow, and how the relationship between a man and his horse often defines a good day on the ranch.
Beautifully illustrated, and lovingly told, SKETCHES FROM THE RANCH bears poetic witness to the myth and reality that is the West.
Customer Reviews:
The year's round of seasons on a Montana ranch.......2003-05-29
Montana has produced so many fine writers. Here's another one. Aadland is the son of a Lutheran minister, growing up in south central Montana between the Beartooth Mountains and the Crow Reservation. His "memoir" is mostly about the present, with flashbacks to the past, which include stories of his wife's forebears, who emigrated from Norway in the late 19th century to set themselves up as ranchers. And there are memories of his boyhood, working as a hired hand, a tour of duty in Vietnam as a marine, and raising a family.
The particular achievement of the book is its description of daily life on a modern-day ranch. Of the many books on ranching, this one conveys better than most the seasonal routines of labor from spring calving and breeding to fall roundup, sale barns, and feeding during the months of snow. There are descriptions of haying, fieldwork, irrigation, keeping machinery running, and visits from the vet. The book also describes well the evolution of ranchwork from when ranchers used horses and hired men to get the work done, and neighbors pitched in to help each other with harvesting. Today, much of the work is mechanized, ranchers work alone, and the undependable seasons, slow markets, and razor-thin profit margins require second incomes for both rancher and spouse. Besides raising cattle, Aadland and his wife are school teachers. He travels 60 miles each way to the high school in Bridger (pop. 724), and in winter months sees the ranch in sunlight only on weekends.
He's also a horseman, raising and training walking horses, and much of the book is devoted to this subject. There are descriptions of patiently working his horses, including a team he uses to harrow a field for no other reason than to experience the pleasure of this old-fashioned method of farming -- no deafening engine to block out the sounds of the natural environment, or to damage hearing. He's a literate rancher, quoting Robert Frost and Thoreau, and both thoughtful and articulate. He's also informative. You learn about practices of breeding horses and cows and how a vet tests for pregnancy. You learn the tentative relationship between weather forecasts and the timing of cutting and baling hay. He has a steady eye and a sense of pacing that makes his book a graceful and unhurried cycle through the seasons. You become so intimately involved in Aadland's life that the sudden tragedy that occurs in the final chapters is both a jolting surprise and thoroughly heart-breaking
It should also be mentioned that this is a handsomely designed book, illustrated with many fine drawings of ranch life by artist Nik Carpenter. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in working ranches, the Big Sky country, horses, and the making of not just a living but a life. As a companion volume, I suggest "Some Horses" by Thomas McGuane, another Montana writer, as well as Linda Hasselstrom's "Windbreak," which recounts a year on a cattle ranch in South Dakota.
An engaging compilation of the thoughtful writings.......2002-08-06
Sketches From The Ranch: A Montana Memoir is an engaging compilation of the thoughtful writings of Dan Aadland. Sketches From The Ranch is about living on a western American ranch (which was founded in 1892), experiencing the turn of the seasons, rejoicing in the birth of colts and calves, embracing simple means of life even as Thoreau did at Walden. Superb black-and-white sketches by artist Nik Carpenter add a visual and emotional touch to this moving memoir.

An intimate and engaging view into ranching life.......1999-09-02
I am an unlikely reader of a book about ranching, a city professional within minutes of the Mall of America. Yet, Dan Aadland brought me intimately into his world and not only let me taste the experience of ranching, but like all good writing, let me feast on life. The sensual quality of the author's writing moved me to respond with my senses. For example, I found that I most enjoyed reading the book on my deck overlooking the woods, feeling the breeze against my face. It was in this setting that I read about cattle buying. Here is a subject I definitely would not have pursued on my own. But Aadland brought the scenes and participants to life and had me so engaged, it was one of my favorite "sketches." I relished his description of the feast he prepared on his private moose hunt. As he wrote about storytelling over Yukon Jack and grapefruit juice, I was compelled to pour my personal version: Cuervo Gold on the rocks with lime juice. I sipped as he told his stories. Dan Aadland not only illuminated the world around him. He effectively brought me into his private world of thought and emotion. I felt right with him as I read his disclosure, "I wonder what I would be psychologically without this space around me, shudder, and force myself to think happier thoughts." I shuddered with him. His emotional honesty was particularly striking as he describes an emotional catharsis toward the end of the book. Aadland's ability to expose the most private--and enlivening--aspects of human experience helped me to identify with him and feel less alone. This was particularly poignant when I recently experienced an emotional reaction similar to the author's. I called up the experience of the author and felt soothed. The isolation-breaking quality of Aadland's writing is a real gift to his readers. I came away from Sketches with a deep respect for ranching, and for a life well lived.
Another excellent book on western life by Dan Aadland........1999-08-31
Dan Aadland's memoir includes many wonderful stories of hard work accomplished in the beautiful ranchlands of Montana. I enjoyed learning about the true bravery required to bring a string of ponies hundreds of miles over wild terrain. The joys and sorrows of daily ranch life are artfully depicted, along with the history and culture of southern Montana. An excellent read.

A Revolution Is Not a Dinner Party.......1999-12-26
"This ingenious attempt to explain the mysteries of Chinese politics to Western readers has two unusal features...a kaleidoscope of photographic images for which [the author's] lucid text serves as a kind of continuous caption. ...It provides as vivid a sense of the complexities of Maoist China as any book yet published. ...should help to clarify the traditinal image of China in the American mind, an image that has often swung capriciously from sentimental enthusiasm to angry disappointment and back again" Richard Bernstein; TIME Magazine, September 6, 1976

track. be sure to purchase Dianne Holum's book titled
the complete book of speedskating[i believe i got the whole
title right]. the book is rare, but it is considered the "Bible" of speedskating literature. it is a rare book. but get it.
Customer Reviews:
fantastic book.......2007-03-08
not enough said about this book, it takes you from basics to conversation.
Children's picture book for the deluded.......2006-07-23
The title really speaks for itself. I was desperate to learn Chinese quickly for travel, was up late, read the reviews, flipped out and bought it. Another romance language if you know one in 10 minutes a day maybe, Chinese if you speak English from a book without audio-not so much....
Let's review the logistics. They don't read English so you can't point to it. You don't read Chinese so you're looking at pictures (not when driving to work). So after dinner you paste romanized Chinese words around the house. Time's up. The next day you memorize a few words that may have a different meaning from the one you intend because you don't have audio phonetics and its a tonal language. Gotta go. The next day, you forget evrything because you only spent 10 minutes and you can't relate it to English. You do the math.
The approach reminds me of the Monty Python skit, where Hungarian tries to buy cigarettes using a phrasebook that inspires him to say "my hovercraft is full of eels" .
And as to the reviews, we don't laugh at Clark Griswold for saying "look at how greatful the French are when we make the slightest effort to speak the language...." because other countries are more grateful when we try to butcher their language. We laugh because he buys "French on the airplane" and believes it works. On the way to China, you're tired, you drink, its crowded, you don't read Chinese, unlike French, they can't read this book, you take out "Chinese in 10 minutes a day" on a 17 hour flight, oops that's my day. Exaggeration, but not by much.
You would either have to grow old or land in Hong Kong!
good to start a basic vocab and concept.......2006-07-01
This was a good book to start a basic vocab and concept of what would later be studied in the Chinese language. I use this book very frequently to start learning a new language and, the only thing that would be missing would be an audio guide to the book. Pronunciation in Chinese is very essential to the word and understanding of the language.
Iceberg.......2006-03-02
This is a good introductory book to Mandarin, but by itself it is incomplete. Correct pronunciation of basic sounds is critical to a non-native speaker before jumping too far into the language. Still, I'm a visual hands-on learner and I appreciate the visual association of words with objects as opposed to systems that employ only spoken lessons. What works best for me is a combination of the two. Consequently, an accompanying tape or CD would enhance this book greatly.
EXCELLENT TOOL FOR BEGINNER STUDENT.......2005-12-07
I have to start this review saying that i thought more than 4 times before buy this book.
For me the title was not to atractive (not too serious for a formal chinese student). But i have to say that since i received this book (with other three books to learn chinese), it got my atention.
This book has colorfull pages, beautiful illustrations, lot of useful vocabulary, and an interested way to introduce new chinese word in every text, even in english text.
Teachs you from you own language, make reference between english grammar and chinese grammar.
This book it's not ambitious, doesnt include chinese caracthers, it's focus on speak, and not to read.
With this book you will learn (at least) to say in chinese:
Where is the table? (nar you ....)
This is the chicken (zhe shi yi ge ji).
I want tea, (wo yao cha).
1,2,3,4,5... 1359...(yi, er, san, si, etc)
Red, blue, gray (hongse, lanse, etc)...
This is, that is (zhe shi, na shi).
Today is monday, see you tomorrow (jintian shi xingqi yi, mingtian jian).
Also include stickers with objects in chinese to stick to your table, clock, window, sofa, cat, etc,
At the end you will have a small vocabulary, but believe me, the way will be really funny.
The only lack of this book it's that doesn't include a CD, it's really important to listen the pronunciation, especially if it's purpose of the book.
It's a good tool for beginners, and if you want to start by yourself (and that's a lot if we talk about chinese).
Sincerely,
from the South of the World (Chile)
Carolina
PD: Sorry for my english... i just speak spanish and a little bit of chinese
Book Description
Rising satirical star Margo Kaufman portrays the mind-numbing, absurdist hilarity of home renovation in a cautionary tale that does for architects what The Hot Zone did for viruses, as a young couple tries to make their dream home become a reality.
Customer Reviews:
Must read is you are doing any renovation.......2000-12-17
My husband and I just got the first estimate from a contrator for a complete renovation of our kitchen. After the shock wore off, I decided my husband has to read this book. (I've read it before.) I was saddened that it is out of print. This is one of the best books I've read about dealing with home renovation ever. It will give you way more practical information about how not to lose your mind during a renovation than almost any home repair book I've read. I hope it goes back into print.
Read this before buying that cute "Fixer-Upper".......1997-08-26
If you are shopping for a house, or considering a renovation this book is the perfect Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware). Picture your dream house knee deep in McDonald's wrapper as your contractor explains why they are 6 months behind schedule. This Damn House will be able to provide laughter through your tears of frustration in dealing with the demons of home repair. The perfect housewarming gift. Anyone that has owned a house can tell you Kaufman speaks the truth, but makes it a whole lot less painfu

Book Description
An affectionate tribute to some of Toronto's most beautiful hidden homes.
Some of the most charming homes in the best neighborhoods of today's modern cities once housed horse teams and carriages. Then ripe with the smells of leather, horse and hay, they are now among the most coveted urban dwellings. This book is a pictorial tour of 22 of Toronto's most attractive coach house homes, some lovingly preserved, others carefully restored, and most extensively renovated. Despite their dramatic interior-design differences, all share a distinctive historic allure.
As the twentieth century progressed, the magnificent coach houses were demolished or fell into disrepair. Because of their age and rarity, the surviving coach houses are highly prized and tenaciously protected by their owners and by many city historical boards across North America. This beautiful collection of essays and images pays homage to these secret homes.
