Book Description
First published in hardback in 1994 and selected by the American Library Association as an Outstanding Academic Book, the revised and updated paperback edition includes the Barings crisis and the report by the Bank of England on Barings Bank; up-to-date information on the state of Japanese banking; changes in the financial scene in the United States; the UK housing market and the problem of negative equity. The paradox of why more coins than ever before are required in an increasingly cashless society is clearly explained, as is the role of the new Euro coin as the lowest common denominator in Europe's controversial single-currency system. The final section provides evidence to suggest that for most of the world's richer countries, the era of persistent inflation may well be at an end. This new edition is updated and takes account of important recent developments such as the independence of the Bank of England, the introduction of Euro notes and coins from January 1, 2002, and developments in electronic money.

Best History of Money Yet Published.......2007-08-01
Almost all English-language books on the history of money are extremely eurocentric. They are written as if the world outside of western Europe did not have an economy before Europeans colonized it. As far as I know, Glyn Davies has written the only monetary history book that dedicates more than a few token pages to non-Western and pre-modern economic history. It is perhaps the only book on the history of money with a truly global scope.
Easy to read, fascinating, and fun exploration of money.......2005-08-16
This is one of my favorite books related to history and economics.
The former Professor Davies has given us a wonderful collection of stories about the original forms of money used and the evolution of money and financial institutions. This is a book that will appeal to a historian, anyone working in the financial sector, anyone interested in economic development or the development of economic and business institutions.
My favorites are the stories about primitive, commodity money, such as giant stones way too big to pack around or exotic teeth! My second favorite stories are those of the Goldsmiths of Engand, who were the first commercial bankers in western Europe. I encourage you to read this book and find your own favorite chapters.

Curious.......2004-03-16
Does it seem strange to anyone that all of the 26 reviews for this book sound exactly the same? Almost like the same person wrote all of the reviews.......or coached others on how to write them.....hmmm...
Motivational and definitely life changing.......2002-11-30
I've ready many books on how to get the life you want but by far this is the best yet. Easy to read, there's little exercises to do to get you thinking and she even provides ideas for making more. Brilliant. If you know you're not living your best life, then this book will really get you going in the right direction with motivation. Get it!!!
Great Book! Very Impressive!.......2002-03-02
I have read a lot of books on how to be successful--from these books I learned it takes hard work to make money. But what about life? Having a balanced life yet still making lots of money seems impossible--from all the reading I had so far.
Then when I pick up this tape I was really suspicious. After I listened to the 1st tape, I absolutely LOVE it! Absolutely fantastic! I found myself talking this to myself (happily): Paraphrase: Do what you'are best at (your "brilliance") and "Laser day/support day/free day" building momentum theory, 80/20 focus phylosophy (this is not new, but it's nice to hear it from a different person again in a different way of explanation), delegate, duplicate, saying no (I said no to a meeting that does not let me focus on my brilliance--yes, I'm so happy!!!), when is enough for adding value(talking about a sincere wise phylosophy!!), free up space and time to focus on your brilliance, write journal. All in all, it confirms my own beliefs that when you have a life besides work you can sustain your brilliance better than overly working. I haven't finished the tape now, I'm on Innovation now. She said most of people think they are not innovative. But you are, everybody are. If you think you are, you are! Using a new way of doing things better, that's innovative! You don't have a dead soul...
Some of the suggestions are not new, a few examples are not that convincing, yet, those are so minor!!! Nobody or no book/tape is perfect--this tape are exceptional!
The Answer.......2001-11-10
If you keep asking yourself, how can I make more money, how can I can have more time, how can I do more things that I enjoy - then this book will give you the answer you are looking for. I have read dozens of business/career books and not until I read this book did I say to myself "Oh, of course, that is what I should do". In fact, I look at my life now as pre- and post- Work Less Make More! You should buy enough copies for all your friends and family.

Read this first, then decide to be a guide.......2003-08-31
After having spent several years pursuing this dream of being a guide, I finally invested several hundred dollars in a home study course as step one. I came across this book sometime after purchasing the home study course, and I wished I had read this book first.
Dan has a unique way of summing everything up and putting it in terms that the average guy can relate to. Although the book made me think hard about my decision, it was worth the cost.
In the end, "When you pause on the pass, look over miles of good country, and admire the racks lashed atop your pack string. Your only regret will probably be that you waited so long to become a guide."
-- Dan Cherry
This book is about being a hunting guide.......2000-09-13
I did not read this book. I am submitting this review because I found this book by searching "adventure travel" on Amazon. I was looking for a book on being an adventure travel guide, organizing trips and/or perhaps starting an adventure travel guiding business. No where in the title or brief description of this book did it indicate the "guiding" covered in the text is as a wild game hunting guide. I think this book should be classified under sports, not adventure travel.

Book Description
From one of the most prominent names in climbing today, a full-color, comprehensive guide to a sport experiencing a renaissance.
"Mixed climbing is my favorite discipline. It's the most fun because it has the fewest rulessort of like professional wrestling compared to boxing." So says Will Gadd, as profiled in Fifty Favorite Climbs. Here the champion ice climber presents the same techniques and veteran wisdom he imparts to those who attend his annual clinics. These include: step-by-step instructions for the swing (ice axe), the kick (footwork), and putting it all together (tracking); how to "read" ice to select your line and follow it safely; and drytool techniques for mixed climbing. Training exercises and inspirational stories complete this seminal guide.
This is the seventh installment in The Mountaineers Outdoor Expert Series
Customer Reviews:
Good material, presentation problematic.......2005-01-07
This is one of the latest guides on ice climbing. It therefore covers the most modern techniques, is up to date with equipment, and has great color photos. Written by Will Gadd it definitely has the flair of an individual author, reads more like a pro's guide than a technical reference. The type of material covered and order is great. However, the editing of this guide is severely lacking. It suffers from incorrect captions, bad figure references, transposed terms (convex vs concave) and complex procedures described in steps that tend to get you lost in confusion rather than clarify.
If you're an already accomplished ice climber, there will be a few "take home" concepts ("tracking"/cycling vertical progression, and his personal take on mix climbing techniques for instance). A beginner will benefit more from this guide (after reading twice to work around the editing problems).
A second edition, edited properly, will be a top-notch guide on this sport.
Great for Beginner / Intermediates.......2004-11-15
Written in thoughtful and lively fashion, Gadd distills his 20 years of collected wisdom into 230 pages. Discussions on tools, technique, nutrition, training are all useful - this is a book for the aspiring ice warrior as well as the climber with a few seasons under his / her belt. The constant Red Bull pimping gets a bit distracting but a guy has to pay the bills, afterall. Highly recommended.
Improve Your Ice Climbing Technique.......2004-01-10
This is simply the best book on ice climbing technique you will find. That's a broad statement, but you'll agree that Will Gadd has done an outstanding job presenting the information in this book. He starts out at a very basic level and proceeds to cover everything from climbing easy ice to mixed climbing. The book offers many tips and tricks as well as stresses the need for safety. There are even a few "war stories" thrown in for your reading enjoyment. The material is presented in an easy-to-read and enjoyable fashion. This book is destined to become the "Bible" of ice climbing technique. From beginner to expert you'll probably find something in this book that will help you improve your technique. A MUST addition to your collection.

Customer Reviews:
fast shipment wished.......2007-05-13
Although I didn't have time to read through the entire book, I am sure this will be very helpful as a reference book.
I am not happy that I had to wait over 1.5 months to receive the book, but I can tell that Amazon made their efforts to ship this item seperatly with another book that I ordered in March, which was not in stock for long time.
Why I love this book.......2007-04-12
As I wrote in another review on Modern Chinese Grammar, I am developing a course for English speakers to learn Mandarin. What I didn't write is that if I could only have one Chinese grammar this would be it. This is an outline. It is not as complete or functional as the Modern Chinese Grammar. However, it contains all that you would need to master Chinese patterns ( there is a scholarly argument as to whether the language actually has a grammar).
I have found information in here that I found no where else. This is a concise, distillation of how the language functions. Recently my Chinese teacher showed me a pattern but couldn't explain the logic and rules of use behind it. She said, " I can't tell you why but this is the way we say it." Of course, I found the information in Schaum's.
Schaum's Always Hits the Mark.......2007-03-10
Schaum's has been a standard supplement for the study of any collegiate subject. This publication is no different. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to Mandarin study. It's my reference for written Chinese.
Excellent both for learning and review.......2007-01-27
This book is easy to use and convenient because it provides clear examples, each with traditional characters, simplified characters, pinyin, and English. The text is logically divided into chapters containing related material. Examples of wrong usage are also provided to that traps for the unwary may be avoided. Exercises (with answers) are presented at the end of each chapter. A good index makes it easy to find relevant material.
The organization and presentation in this book is in sharp contrast to the other Schaum's book, Chinese Vocabulary. That book has only simplified characters, and even though complete sample sentences are provided, usually only one word (the vocabulary word) has an English translation.
Excellent complement for my chinese classes.......2007-01-04
This book contains excellent conversation topics to complement my regular chinese classes, I wish the chinese character were bigger to see them better.
Average customer rating:
- Please consider including both the traditional form and the simplified one as well

This companion volume to Schaum's Outline of Chinese Grammar features a clear, concise, and proven format to help students with any course in Chinese, plus 200 sets of practise exercises and Chinese glossaries.
Customer Reviews:
Please consider including both the traditional form and the simplified one as well.......2007-07-11
Schaum's Outline of Chinese Grammar chose to include both the traditional form and the simplified form in the book. I really think that's a very smart and considerate decision. For people who want to learn the Chinese characters, you need to get familiar with both forms. If you're taught only in simplified form, you're missing a lot -- especially the beauty of the Chinese characters. I strongly recommend that Schaum list both forms like you did with the grammar book. Besides, I guarantee that if you make this small change, the book will sell better. Otherwise, I won't buy it.
Lots of vocabulary, but presentation could be better.......2007-01-27
This book presents lots of useful vocabulary, often with a helpful sketch. For example the At the Hotel chapter shows a picture of the room and bathroom, with callouts for the Chinese words for the bed, sink, shower, etc. in characters and pinyin.
Sample dialogs are presented to demonstrate the use of the vocabulary. However, the presentation could be improved simply by using the form in the Schaum's Chinese Grammar book, where every sentence if provided in traditional and simplified characters, pinyin, and English. Instead, the Vocabulary book usually gives the English for only one word in the sentence. That's fine if you already have a working knowledge of Chinese, but for beginner's it would be nicer to have a translation of the whole sentence.
A good vocabulary reference .......2007-01-03
I purchased this book several months ago, to complement my chinese classes, it helped me to learn much more new words related to some commom everyday conversation topics. Although I wish the chinese character printed were a little bigger for easier reading, other than that It has been a worthy buy.
Wonderfully useful content presented clearly.......2006-10-05
I've studied Mandarin (off and on... too much off) for about twelve years. I have many books that teach me obscure Chinese history or the names of Chinese minority groups' clothing and holidays. But I have sketchy knowledge of many fundamental words, like "water faucet." This book systematically plows through commonly used vocabulary. It tells you, for example, how to say "web browser" and "mouse" in Chinese (which I find essential for showing my in-laws how to use a computer). And, unlike a Mandarin pictorial dictionary I have that displays only Chinese characters, this book also has pinyin and uses the words in sentences.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who can pronunce pinyin and wants to build up a practical vocabulary.
Excellent.......2006-03-19
This book (along with "Practical Chinese Grammar"(...)) are the two books I use whenever I don't understand the right way to say something in Chinese. Neither are for beginners, but after about a semester or two of Chinese, they are indispensible. Many times I know I'm saying something with the wrong grammar, and a quick look-up sets me straight.

Her mother and father don't like the idea because it seems like they don't have any money. So one day she wrote a poem and her teacher caught her writing it and her teacher will even read it out or throw it in the trash. The teacher told Doris to give it to her and the teacher took it and Doris said it was birds so the teacher gave it to him. While they were in class Doris looked at birds pocket and saw that the paper wasn't in bird pocket any more. Then later she saw her paper being passed around the classroom and being read out loud. Later that day when school was dismissed Doris was walking down the hallway and bird saw her and ran to her and she pushed him away because what he done in class. Yellow Bird and Me is a very good book. It is about a girl named Doris and her friend Bird. Doris has a friend that moved away. Doris writes letters to her friend every time she writes a peom. Doris and her friend are very good friends. I like the book because it is funny and I recommend this book to everybody. I've got to say, it's a big big laugh-out-loud. Yellow Bird and Me is one of the best books I have ever read (I have read a lot of books). If I had to rate it 1 - 5, I would give it a 5. This is what it is about... Doris has a friend named Amir who moved away. She also has a friend named Yellow Bird, who has problems reading. This is a good book for little kids. ...
I liked Yellow Bird and Me........2002-04-06
I liked the book Yellow Bird and Me. It was hard to put down, but it was boring at the beginning. It was about Doris, who is trying to earn money to see her friend Amir and Bird, who wants to be in the drama club, but he can't read, so Doris has to help him. ...
