Book Description
APPLIED REGRESSION ANALYSIS applies regression to real data and examples while employing commercial statistical and spreadsheet software. Covering the core regression topics as well as optional topics including ANOVA, Time Series Forecasting, and Discriminant Analysis, the text emphasizes the importance of understanding the assumptions of the regression model, knowing how to validate a selected model for these assumptions, knowing when and how regression might be useful in a business setting, and understanding and interpreting output from statistical packages and spreadsheets.

Great Minitab Resource.......2007-05-15
Dr. Dielman was a professor of mine. The book is well organized and useful for all people on all levels.
Excellent.......2006-12-26
For my class, the professor assigned Kleinbaum et al's textbook rather than this one. As I mentioned in my review for that book, it was so confusing and poorly organized. Luckily, I found this book in the library and used it instead and ended up a lot less confused in class than my classmates who were trying to understand the Kleinbaum book. Dielman's book is very well organized and laid out. It doesn't have colorful bells and whistles since it's a fairly upper level book, but it does have a very user-friendly layout. Furthermore, the formulas are never presented without an accompanying explanation in plain English and examples of how and when to use them. Another thing I really like about this book is that it gives thorough directions on how to do a lot of the analyses on some common statistical packages. Many of the instructions are accompanied by screenshots. They're at the end of each chapter rather than interspersed in the text, which makes them easy to find. This is actually becoming a great SAS manual for me.
For anyone struggling with the Kleinbaum book, or for any instructor considering using the Kleinbaum book, I would highly recommend this one instead.
A Cross-platform textbook.......2006-05-15
I have bought Dr. Dielman's Applied Regression 4e textbook in Taiwan) for preparing my MBA thesis regarding the interaction effects. Given the widespread use of commercially available packages, this book provided considerately coverage on ALL computer packages about the field of regression work.

Good book, obnoxious notation.......2005-11-12
This is a good introduction to econometrics, appropriate for the first semester of a 1st year graduate course, or maybe for an advanced undergraduate course. It is written in a relatively straighforward and dry way, but I found it clear and to the point. Goldberger also differs from other textbooks because he seems more able than most authors to provide an intuition (even if brief) for several concepts. Many of the exercises are also very useful, and well thought-out. The math is not forbidding, and is adequate to a first year PhD in economics, and maybe even a bit too simple for that.
It is a bit dated, and it does not cover anything new or semi-new in econometrics, but admittedly this book should only be an introduction, so it does its job fine. Just take into account that learning the content of this book will not be enough to be a good practictioner, so if you are self-teaching the topic to yourself you should probably look at other books, such as Wooldridge's Econometrics analysis of cross section and panel data.
The one thing I hated about the book is the notation. The author keeps introducing new notation page after page (aiming at providing "shortcuts" for longer expressions), and the new notation builds on the previous one. The result is that when you go back to this book to use it as a reference and you need a concept in, say, chapter 10, you have to go back to chapter 7 for some notation, and this will send you back to chapter 3 and so on and so forth. Overall, though, I think this is a very good book, from a very distinguished author.
Nice starter.......2004-10-31
It is a useful book to understand some of the basics in econometrics.
Excellent as an introduction and as a reference........1999-09-06
This is one of those rare textbooks that manages to be both a good introduction to the subject and a useful reference. Readable on the first try and well organized. Highly recommended.
Terse but very good.......1999-05-16
This textbook for advanced undergraduates or first-year graduate students leads the reader through the basic concepts and statistical procedures of econometrics. The extensive use of matrix notation allows the reader to easily apply Goldberger's formulae to actual data (especially with computer packages such as Gauss and Matlab). Although the author gives brief treatments which sometimes require several readings to be fully understood, he is by no means unclear or confusing. Quite the contrary, as the book is very concise. Sections which I found especially useful and interesting were: 22.5 Statistical versus Economic Significance, 23 Multicollinearity (actually humorous!), and 24 Regression Strategies.
Very readable by your own self........1998-11-02
Maybe this is one of the most famous books in classical econometrics now at graduate level. Different from other overwhelming econometrics text books (e.g., Greene), this textbook is very readable and still practical. I liked it.

and beauty book.......2004-02-05
My first experience with the formal econometrics was with this book, the book contain the classic econometric theory of regression with few matrix algebra, more with summations if you remember for example the beta estimator in y=bx+u is b=sigma(xi,yi)/sigma(xi2), this way bacon develops deep ideas in regression theory, heteroskedasticity, correlated errors, autocorrelation and simultaneous equations, the book is an beauty expression of basic mathematic and strong results.

Description:
This paper identifies the impact of undergraduate teacher certification programs on the likelihood that recent college graduates enter and remain in public school teaching jobs. More selective postsecondary institutions are far less likely to offer teacher certification programs and those that do offer them are less likely to allow students to complete them within their four undergraduate years. First, to examine the overall relationship between the availability of teacher certification programs and the likelihood that academically talented students enter teaching careers, I combine Barron's ratings of college selectivity, detailed data tracking college seniors into the workforce, data on the types of teacher certification programs offered by their colleges, and data on states' certification requirements. Next, to isolate the causal effect of program offerings, I treat the selection issue related to students sorting into colleges based on pre-existing interest in teaching careers as an omitted variable problem. Using another data set that surveys high school seniors' career interests and tracks them into college, I estimate an upper bound for the magnitude of the bias in the baseline coefficient estimates. The results suggest that the addition of teacher certification programs that may be completed within four undergraduate years could increase rates of entry into public school teaching by at least 50% among recent graduates of certain selective colleges.

Excellent; consice but packed with information.......2006-06-29
After reading 5 or 6 other books on hydroponics, this book is by far the best. It is packed with information, good drawings and pictures, and the results of ongoing research. It explains the different techniques used with hydroponics in enough detail that a beginner can make intelligent decisions about how to proceed. Excellent hands on information. It is filled with tidbits of info that add to your understanding of why things work best a certain way, without overwhelming you with extremely techincal explainations. I found that most books were too simplistic, or else textbooks, on the subject. The author did a good job of finding the middle ground.

Customer Reviews:
Creative and stimulating speculations.......2004-04-12
I'm a PhD mathematician with a few publications in "chaos theory" and also some experience researching in other areas Katya touches on in this book, such as molecular biology. While she plays fast and loose with terminology sometimes, I think she also makes a lot of really interesting points. I don't care much for the I Ching, but her analysis of the parallels between the I Ching and DNA are fascinating, and give some insights into the mathematical structure of both the I Ching and DNA. If she were a little more careful in her treatment of science, this could have been a five-star book. But I'll give it four stars for inventiveness and creativity. Unlike most authors writing books at the science-spirituality boundary, she's not just spouting the same old platitudes; she actually has some new things to say, albeit most of them are speculative from the scientific point of view.
Excellent book!.......2003-01-02
Katya Walters discusses some very interesting parallels between Eastern philosophies, art, and modern science. I think this book opened my eyes to how almost everything can be understood as a rhythmic process of polar opposites. It really enabled me to understand the rhythm of things in nature including ouselves as humans. You can read an even better and interesting account of rhythm in nature (including human nature) in The Ever-Transcending Spirit by Toru Sato. Sato's book has taken this idea and applied it to a wider variety of human experiences relating to development, consciousness, and human interaction and interpersonal relationships. Nevertheless, Walters' book is still a very interesting account on the general rhythm of chaos and order and well worth a read!
Phenominal investigation and application.......1999-07-14
Anyone who doesn't like this book does not understand it. "The answer is simply as your level of understanding makes possible", Star Trek. As a student of physics and the I Ching I could not believe someone else had been that deep in the well of Chaos and the I ching. I applaud Katya and encourage any deeply inquiring mind to check this one out. Thin threads connect great things.
Intriging if not too highbrow for some readers........1999-06-23
As a student of eastern religions, I found the book to be a little heavy on the mathematical lingo, and a little difficult to fathom as I do not claim to be a mathemetician with a clear understanding of chaotic systems and their behavior. However, the comparison made between the I Ching and DNA is one that is intriging and is gaining wide interest in "eastern" intellectual circles. For more insights into the I Ching/DNA link, I also recommend Terence McKenna's "Invisible Landscape" and also his book "The Archaic Revival".
Author has very poor knowledge of the subject material........1997-12-01
Having formally studied nonlinear mechanics and chaos, I can confidently tell you that the author is just spewing popular buzzwords with absolutely no clue as to their meaning. To make matters worse, she proudly invents her own definitions for words such as "nonlinear" that already have meanings in common usage. Of course, once she's redefined several key words to fit her needs, the author finds wonderful similarities that aren't really there. My knowledge of eastern philosophy isn't great, but I strongly suspect the author's knowledge in this area to be similarly weak. In my opinion, the author is attempting to make a buck by imitating an excellent and far superior book, Fritjof Capra's "The Tao of Physics".

Notes from the Old School, or rather, the Experienced School.......2005-01-01
Each chapter of this book is an old article from the good years of Rudder Magazine (1893 - ~1950). I now see why the magaize has such an excellent reputation. The book is full of very interesting, practical and relevant information from real experts about both sailing a power boating. Also the authors are often very opinionated, and I find that extremely entertaining and useful. Today's magazines are largely of forum for advertisers, and the editors often write what pleases the advertisers (their primary source of $ is advertising, not subscription fees). I have more confidence in the advice of experts who have nothing to gain (this book), than the happy go lucky stories and product reviews of today's magazines.
If you don't like all of the ridiculusly positive reviews, shiny products, and promotion of excessive reliance on systems, then skip today's magazines. If instead you believe sailing and cruising is about depending on your own competence with basic skills, knowlege and experience, then this should be excellent and informative reading.
The information here is very relevant today: Boats still float, the wind still blows, and the sails still fill, good seamanship has not changed.
I would take one issue of Rudder Magazine over a year long subscribtion of today's magazines (Sail Mag., Cruising World...)

Excellent, visual approach to teaching kids to write reports.......2007-03-03
This approach is soooo much better than the outlining approach I learned over 30 years ago. I have no idea why it is so much easier for kids to fill in boxes than fill out an outline, but for some reason it is. My kids are writing basic reports quickly and easily and without the tears and frustration we had last fall. The method is easy to learn and use, and I highly recommend it.
However, if you are more interested in teaching creative writing, then I wouldn't use this approach - in my view, 4-square is well suited to non-fiction reports and essays, but not for writing adventure stories, etc...
this rocks.......2006-11-06
This is the best writing curriculum ever! When I taught my daughter the first lessons, she responded, "That was school? I didn't even know we were doing school!" It's easy to teach, very visual, and makes the child feel like a writing pro with the first lesson.
AN UPDATE.......2006-09-02
3 years later and I'm back with an update. I still like 4 Square as a graphic organizer.
The structure is easy for children to understand. You will get writing that is organized with details.
I can say that I have moved away from it as my ONLY graphic organizer. If you plan on using 4 Square I would couple it wih 6 TRAITS materials or the authors 4 Square additions/extensions.
Students do need to be taught voice, word choice, and sentence fluency, in addtion to organization.
Great writing tool!.......2005-12-16
Very helpful for teaching young kids how to compose well written paragraphs and reports. Recommended!
Four Square Writing Method.......2005-10-11
I love this method of teaching. I have taught 4th grade for the past 2 years. The school I taught at last year used this method. My class loved this method and their writing improved. I moved to a new school this year and loved this method so much I had to buy my own book. I started using it with my class now, and they love it. It makes writing so much easier. My class always wants to know when it is time to write. I recommend this book to anyone who teaches writing.

A tense and original post-war novel.......1999-07-23
A 13-year-old German girl helps an old man smuggle the body ofhis wife through post-WWII refugee camps and transport trains tofulfill her wish to be buried in Cologne.
Degens breathes new life into the familiar WW II genre in this thought-provoking, powerfully metaphoric novel. The nameless heroine is neither a Jew nor a Nazi, but a sharp-witted German teenager with an instinct for survival, a keen eye for the absurdities of war and peace, and a capacity for compassion that she doesn't know exists. The ironies of life in wartime and post-war Germany are explored in detail: students are given good grades for learning one set of historical facts during the war and an opposite set of facts after it, rules and regulations are so arbitrary and changeable that it's pointless to learn them, but violating them can kill you, and a five-day-old corpse can't be buried until it's officially certified dead. While these facts are specific as to a certain time and place, they also have an obvious contemporary relevance. This biting irony that pervades the book is accompanied by a strong element of black comedy, as the narrator and Mr. Lauritzen have to haul a corpse around while pretending that it's still alive, and hoping that no will notice its growing deterioration.
The central relationship between the narrator and Mr. Lauritzen is unusual and moving, as the narrator gradually become his co-conspirator and protector. The supporting characters are sharply drawn, some kind, some truly horrible, and most somewhere in between. The plot's non-stop twists, frustrations, and reversals are very suspenseful, and the simple time-lock element of having to get a body to a graveyard before someone notices that it's dead adds to the urgency of the story.
