Book Description
Dr. Anderson's first book is a classic. It tracks slavery and Jim Crow public policies that used black labor to construct a superpower nation. It details how black people were socially engineered into the lowest level of a real life Monopoly game, which they are neither playing or winning. Black Labor is a comprehensive analysis of the issues of race. Dr. Anderson uses the anaylsis in this book to offer solutions to America's race problem.

Understanding and knowing why.......2006-01-22
I was pleased that Dr. Anderson stated that the purpose of his book was not to criticize any group of people, but to analyze history and propose a reasonable solution.A lot of questions have been answered.I am looking forward to reading Powernomics.
Please read this awesome book with an open mind and look at the facts.Buy it.
A different economic history.......2005-01-03
One of the best books on economic history dealing with a topic few wish to discuss or acknowledge!! Dr Claude explores a wide range of topics dealing first with the true beneficiaries of government affirmative action, slavery, jim crow simi slavery and the current private economic handouts. The African economic economy has been very prosperous all others. This is a must read for those MBA grads who need additional information on how to run businesses in Urban and Suburban communities. The best part is, Dr. Claude gives solutions and remedies that are timely and most warranted .
A MUST READ FOR BLACK AMERICANS.......2004-12-24
This book proves the absolute travesty of history education given to students in the U.S. As a young black man taught in public schools, one almost gasps in astonishment at how sinister US textbook authors are by completely marginalizing and minimalizing slavery and its place in american history.
The US economy was founded off of the mass exploitation of blacks, producing most if not all of the goods and services this country (and European countries) consumed and traded with other nations. When one quantifies the whole of what blacks experienced through 450 years of holocaust, one wonders how on earth we managed to survive in the first place.
An example of one of the facts mentioned by the author is that immigrants (either living in or arriving) to the U.S. are able to reap first class citizenship status and enjoy the fruits and benefits of this country while not having to lift a finger..even with millions of them having fought as COMBATANTS in major WARS AGAINST THE U.S; yet blacks, who have been here since its very beginning, are still seen as 2nd and 3rd class citizens, shut out of the ownership class in this country, and marginalized in every single facet of american society, and have yet receive their just recompense for centuries of abuse, exploitation, and genocide.
Guess its just the "american way"...
another shameless act of scape-goating.......2003-05-19
it is time for the black race to grow up and stop blaming its problems on whites. as a young white man, i am appaled at this open flaunting of racism. adolf hitler tried to blame germany's problems on the jews, saying they controled the wealth and forced the white man to do the work. this author will tell you that the white man controls all the wealth and forces the black man to do all the work. i wonder who his inspiration was? whites, blacks, jews, asians, and people of the world: tell this racist all he is doing is causing more hate.
Good Book, I met the author.......2002-04-23
This book offers a unique perspective on African-American economic development. It challenges many assumptions and offers new perspectives.

Sort of an "Outermost House," relocated to Maine.......2004-09-08
Henry Beston is best known for writing about his solo Cape Cod beach experience in "The Outermost House." A few years later he married author Elizabeth Coatsworth, and they bought a farm in Maine. First published in 1948, "Northern Farm" recounts a calendar year's worth of rural life in that northern clime. Brrrr.
The chronological narrative begins as the Bestons return to their snow-covered fields and ice-capped pond after celebrating the Christmas season with friends in New York. Each chapter combines factual events with entries from Beston's farm diary, plus his summary philosophical statements. And boy, does winter sure seem to last a long time! It frames the progression of the book. Thankfully Beston takes the opportunity to describe the wildlife he's able to encounter between snowstorms. An overwhelming sense of community surfaces here as well. Remember: this story takes place in a farming landscape just after WWII, before a television could be found in every living room, and when people relied on each other for help during challenging times. They were the kind of times when you left a lantern burning in the front room so that you could more easily find your way home after attending a church supper on a rainy night. "The good old days," for some.
In addition to his notes about managing a small farm and following Nature's course, Beston ruminates about international issues. The war is still fresh in his mind, and he needs to speak about it. Read in post-9/11 times, his comments strike an eerie chord of familiarity. For example:
"No age in history can afford to lay too much emphasis upon 'security.' The truth is from our first breath to our last we inhabit insecurely a world which must of transitory nature be insecure, and that moreover any security we do achieve is but a kind of an illusion. While admitting that a profound instinct towards such safety as we can achieve is part of our animal being, let us also confess that the challenge involved in mere existence is the source of many of the greater virtues of human character." (page 47, in my paperback copy)
Wow! And that's just one of his astute observations.
"Northern Farm" describes a simpler time and place that we'll never see again, regretfully. This is a book well worth tracking down. Just be prepared for A LOT of winter!
Stirs the Yoeman farmer in each of us!.......1998-03-18
This is a delightful work. The writing is superb. It is a quick read, too quick. I wish it went on for several hundred pages more. It is one of those books that once you finish it the next book you read seems flat and dull. It is about a year he spent on his farm in Maine. It is filled with wonderful, arftul, inciteful, descriptive glimpses into this world and humanity. It stirs the soul and has a way of making one want to go right outside and plant something. A great read for anyone who likes nature or great writing in general.

In terms of work ethic, John Feinstein is the sports equivalent of Stephen King: he's tireless, prolific, and multifaceted. With a past-performance line that includes A Season on the Brink, A Good Walk Spoiled, and A Civil War, he's regularly in the running for his genre's MVP. A March to Madness, which chronicles the 1996-97 Atlantic Coast Conference's ineluctable journey to March Madness, continues his string. Exhaustively reported, and penned with as much poignancy as panache, it's the story of the most competitive college basketball conference in the U.S., filtered through the eyes--and complex lives--of its head coaches. Coaching young in-your-faces is never easy; it's even harder in a pressure cooker such as the ACC, where expectations are enormous, winning is essential, and an NCAA tournament bid is requisite for survival. Feinstein had remarkable access to his high-profile, high-strung subjects, such as Dean Smith, Bobby Cremins, and Mike Krzyzewski, and the drama he records is every bit as fast-paced and stunning as a close Duke-North Carolina game with the final seconds ticking off the clock.

Customer Reviews:
Fun and interesting read.......2007-01-06
This book follows ACC basketball for a season. Very fun, like potato chips, hard to stop.
It's Not the Patriot League.......2006-12-11
'A March to Madness' follows the Atlantic Coast Conference through the 1996-97 season with Feinstein's signature behind the scenes access. For a fascinating contrast, read this book and then read Feinstein's also excellent 'The Last Amateurs' about the Partiot League. The Patriot League has more true student-athletes, healthier competition, and a lot less money.
'A March to Madness' portrays the high stakes, high pressure, big money atmosphere behind big-time college sports. The ACC is great college basketball conference, but this book tears away most of the romantic myths. The reader is, however, treated to behind the scenes looks at coaches like Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, and Gary Williams, as well as big name players like Vince Carter and Tim Duncan. It's especially interesting to read about Williams' agonies of doubt - this book was written 6 years before the Terps won the NCAA title.
Very highly recommended for readers who enjoy college basketball or John Feinstein.
Great Behind the Scenes Writing.......2006-09-27
If you love ACC basketball and cannot get enough behind the scenes information about the coaches then you'll love this book.
Feinstein is amazing in that he has the clout to get into the locker rooms of each of the teams in this conference. Further still, the coaches and players never hold back on their thoughts. So you get one fantastic book, made up of hundreds of interesting basketball stories.
Sweat Equity Pays Off.......2004-09-16
I'm not a college hoops fan, but having come from the University of Connecticut (back when winning the NIT was a big deal for us), I figured I should try to read something about the sport that has come to define my alma mater.
I chose well. No, UConn is not a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the subject of this season-long profile by John Feinstein. But Feinstein gives a solid appreciation for what college basketball is all about through the experiences of the coaches, players, refs, execs, and fans active in the ACC, which Feinstein claims is perhaps the most competitive b-ball conference in Division 1, year in and out. "Let down just the slightest bit and you become instant roadkill," he writes.
Feinstein gives you a sense of the different coaching styles at play here, from Dean Smith's traditional approach at North Carolina to Rick Barnes' cut-up quirkiness at Clemson to Dave Odom's huggy-bear avuncularity at Wake Forest. He relates tales about the history and folklore of the conference that make one feel like an instant Dick Vitale just from reading them, even if the terms "traveling" and "charging" make you flash on American Express. Most importantly, he writes a book that really opens up the world of college basketball to the more casual fan, or even curious non-fan.
That's what I liked the book. I read it, relished it, and enjoyed it with practically no knowledge of the sport going in. The way Feinstein writes about how different refs call different fouls, for example, was both illuminating and entertaining reading.
Feinstein also writes candidly about contracts, recruiting, marriages (failed and successful), burnout, death, and all the other factors that affect college coaches. Players are less the focus, and I get the feeling that Feinstein speaks from personal experience late in the book when he speculates about how an inability to relate to his young players may have moved Dean Smith to retire at 66. The absence of a players' perspective is unfortunate, but it kind of follows with the focus of the book being on the nine coaches, seven of whom gave Feinstein total access.
Feinstein obviously worked hard, and at times his narrative seems to be everywhere at once. Really great work on game descriptions, too, the way he uses them judiciously to punch up the storyline without letting them overtake the rest of the book.
Finally, this is a must-read for fans of Duke and their coach, Mike Krzyzewski. Krzyzewski comes off the best in this book, and while some charge Duke grad Feinstein with bias, the truth is Krzyzewski has the most to offer, both as a man and as a coach. The story of his "drawing the line" before a big game with North Carolina is worth the price of the book by itself. Between him and Dean Smith, I'm surprised Feinstein had time at all for poor Pat Kennedy of Florida State, but he works hard at balance.
What most comes across in this book is the amazing drive of the people involved. "If you're good enough to reach a goal, then there's still someplace else to go," says Maryland coach Gary Williams. "You don't just stop. You keep trying to be better."
There are minor holes in "A March To Madness," but what makes it great is the fact its author shares Williams' passion for excellence. There's no let up.
A Book Every ACC Fan Should Read.......2004-08-27
John Feinstein is a great writer, and this book is a look at one season in the ACC. He follows the teams around the conference for a season, giving us the background of the players and coaches and showing us the high and low points of the season.
For those of us who didn't go to one of these schools, it's a great way to learn about the basketball traditions of the conference, the history of the rivalries, the conference tournament, the arenas, the fans, etc.
Even if you're not an ACC fan, if you like college basketball you should enjoy this book.

Customer Reviews:
There is a major bug with the CD software........2007-01-11
The problem can be resolved by thier "stupid" customer service people, if you can somehow convince them that you have the correct CD. The Merck software is excellent, and the Cambridgesoft software running it is terrible, I feel sorry for Merck. It wouldn't run properly on my machine, I had to go back and forth over 4 days to resolve this issue with their outsourced (to India) technical staff via email. Apparently if you have a previous version of Merck installed with Cambridgesoft software on your XP, then you will need to perform some surgery on your Registry, and then install an update into certain files locaed on the C drive.
Once you get it working, it should be fine.
No doubt however that the TEXT Merck Index is EXCELLENT.
Great Reference - BEWARE MISSING PAGES.......2006-12-06
This is an indispensable reference book. I use it daily. I recently upgraded to this most recent version. I have had it about 3 weeks. I went to look up quinine today and couldn't find the Q's. Then I had a brief moment of disbelief and I recited the alphabet to myself to make sure I wasn't missing something. Then, I noticed my copy skipped from page 1376 to page 1425! Fortunately I can still exchange the book, but beware....count your pages when you get this book.
Otherwise, great book. And the included CD-ROM provides a little extra searching power. I would prefer that the CD interface and printouts were a little cleaner.
MERCK'S REVELATIONS.......2002-12-29
This edition of "The Merck Index: An Encyclopedia of Chemicals, Drugs, & Biologicals" shows remarkable improvement over its predecessor.
Boasting of diverse groups of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, it is a success in its own right. There are just plenty to be explored! The book brims with accurate up-to-date information. Pharmacists, Medics, Chemists, Biologists, Physicists, Agriculturists, and many other professionals who work with elements, compounds and mixtures will find this book very useful. It is revised, and is complemented with detailed descriptions, which include molecular formulae, molecular weights, as well as the percentage compositions of constituent chemicals in a compound or mixture.
It is a valuable reference tool.
Excellent chemical reference!.......2002-12-16
This book must be the most organized reference book I have ever used. Its so fulfilling to be able to find exactly what you're looking for when you need it. Includes a common name index, chemical formula index, as well as registry numbers, therapeutic categories for drugs, useful tables, and organic chemical equations. highly recommended!
don't like it.......2001-12-05
personally, I think that this index has the most innacurate information available. It never has what most people need and it's too hard to use.

Book Description
Davey's had to grow up fast in order to get away--away from his beautiful mother, who loves him, but doesn't know how to take care of him; away from his charismatic but reckless father, who loves him too, but can't commit to anyone, least of all his family; and away from the people who look at him strangely because he's not like them. The only constant in his life has been his sister, Joanne, who's fed him, protected him, and taken care of him ever since she was seven and he was two.
Now Jo, still a teenager, has a baby herself, and it's Davey's turn to take care of someone. Someday soon, he knows, he'll find his own somebody who'll love him, and he'll have his own babies and he'll love them like nobody ever loved babies before.
Gritty, gripping, unflinchingly honest, Gypsy Davey is the extraordinary story of a boy's ultimate triumph as he comes of age.
Customer Reviews:
gypsy davey.......2002-06-18
Gypsy Davey was a pretty good book about a kid named Davey and how hard his life was. His dad isn't around and his mom drinks a lot and has a lot of boyfriends. His sister takes care of him mostly when he is little, but then when she is a teenager she has a baby. This story talks a lot about all the responsibilities that Davey has during his life, but it also talks about how the way he was raised helps him know how he wants to be as an adult. He wants to be a good father and have a good life.
An Adolescent Adventure.......2000-02-04
Many middle-school students wish their parents would just leave them alone to make their own decisions. After reading the story of Davey's life, a student might think again. The freedom and neglect Davey lives with prevent him from doing well in school, forming good friendships and enjoying 'normal' activities. The adventures Davey experiences are interesting, funny and can help a reader to appreciate all that he/she has been given. Readers who enjoy reading about the realities of life, or think they have it tough may want to read this book. If a person liked Forest Gump, he/she will probably enjoy this novel.
Absolutley Loved It.......1999-10-20
This was a very good book. It was good because it teaches you many things about life. It shows some things about life that are sad,but true. Even though young people like Chris Lynch's books the most, adults should also like his books because they might teach them a thing or two. Chris Lynch should write more books because they are interesting and fun to read.
