Book Description
The eighth edition of Business Forecasting presents basic statistical techniques that are useful for preparing individual business forecasts and long-range plans. Written in a simple, straightforward style and making extensive use of practical business examples, the book includes fifty-three cases that provide readers with the necessary link between theoretical concepts and their real-world applications. Readers should have a basic knowledge of statistics and be familiar with computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheets.
The book first presents background material such as the nature of forecasting and a quick review of basic statistical concepts; proceeds with the exploration of data patterns and choosing a forecasting technique; covers averaging the smoothing techniques and time series decomposition; emphasizes causal forecasting techniques such as correlation, regression, and multiple regression analysis; and concludes with judgmental forecasting and forecast adjustments.
Useful as a reference for professionals with titles such as: forecasting manager, marketing manager, production manager, and analyst.
Customer Reviews:
frustrating.......2006-07-09
I bought this book to do forecasting for work. The authors' names looked familiar, but I thought maybe an obscure article or footnote was the reason. Then, after going through this book, I realized the reason - Wichern is the same guy who wrote the utterly confusing, frustrating, and represensible Multivariate textbook myself and fellow graduate students were subjected to (and promptly ignored in favor of better books on the subject).
This book is a perfect example of why textbooks suck - professors get tenure by publishing and other professors do the evaluation. Learning or effectiveness never comes into the equation. So, as a book for impressing other professors, this book is a huge success. But as a book for actually learning how to do forecasting, it is an utter failure.
With the advent of the internet, there is better information about this subject on-line (like Wikipedia), written for people who do real work. I gave it two stars only because it is a moderately useful reference.
A good text, but frustrating........2006-04-10
The book presents the topic of forecasting in good, methodical way with examples and illustrations from Minitab. It the book also illustrates the procedures on how to work with Minitab.
However, it appears the book may not have been updated for the changes in the Minitab software. As such, trying to replicate the tables and output illustrated in the book is very frustrating. As a student trying to learn the basics of forecasting, it is not possible to tell what errors are mine versus being due to differences in the software.
The supporting student website only contains data sets. An update to the tables and exhibits at the website would be helpful, as well as mentioning the existence of the website more than is currently done in the text.
Other than the frustration caused by the tables and printouts not exactly matching the current Minitab printouts, it is a good, understandable text that would have rated a 5.

Book Description
During the past two decades, many organizations have sought to utilize a number of participative management techniques in order to both motivate their workforce and to make their operations more effective in terms of costs, quality, productivity, and customer service. This study examines one such technique that has gained widespread popularity: job enrichment or job redesign. Written for students and practitioners of human resource management and organizational development, the authors report on the experience with job enrichment and work restructuring in four firms and compare the experiences of two. Throughout, the authors focus particularly on the primary challenge confronted by job redesign advocates within the individual organization: how to diffuse the relevant concepts in such a way that they have a widespread and lasting impact on the performance of the organization. Using detailed written documentation from the four companies as well as in-depth interviews, the authors describe how each company attempted to diffuse job redesign throughout the organization and identify the lessons for management that can be learned from each case. The reasons for the success or failure of diffusion in each company are examined in detail as are the particular steps taken by personnel within the organization. As the authors demonstrate, the successful spread of new management concepts throughout the organization requires skillful manipulation by internal advocates of the process. The most effective advocates, they argue, have detailed knowledge of the operations of an organization and use this knowledge to develop their innovations.

Book Description
Ecotourism A Sustainable Option? Edited by Erlet Cater University of Reading, UK and Gwen Lowman Royal Geographical Society, UK Recent years have witnessed growing public and professional concern with environmental issues, including the fields of tourism and leisure. The adverse impacts of conventional mass tourism have led to demands for more environmentally sensitive approaches to tourist and leisure development. Increasing environmental awareness has also led to a rise in travel to destinations offering a wealth of unspoiled nature. These trends, broadly defined as "ecotourism", have produced one of the fastest growing and most hotly debated sectors in the tourism industry. This well-balanced and wide-ranging book provides the first overview of this key area, providing definitions, theoretical perspectives and detailed case studies, contributed by researchers, professionals and activists. This is an essential introduction to a dynamic and central topic in contemporary tourism.

Analyzing the legend and lore of golf's most celebrated tournament has become something of a cottage industry of late, but Owen, who displayed his personal golfing affections, frustrations, and obsessions so marvelously in My Usual Game, now goes where his competition hasn't gained access: to the source--via access to Augusta National's archives, records, and membership. The result is a sympathetic, yet still critical and complex portrait of the club and its founder, Clifford Roberts, to whom golf history has not been particularly kind. Indeed, for better--and for worse--Roberts and Augusta remain linked throughout what is essentially a volume that weaves biography with social history played against a sporting canvas. Naturally, finance, ego, Bobby Jones, television, and President Eisenhower figure into the tale, but Eisenhower's not the only leader of the free world to use the club's exclusivity to his benefit; Owen uncovers the delicious bit that Ronald Reagan and George Schultz helped finalize the invasion of Grenada there.
Of course, there is also some great golf. Augusta National would be just another golf club with a fancy pedigree and history of exclusion were it not for the remarkable tournament that it hosts every year. Owen, a graceful writer, tees up plenty of detail and anecdote in a hole-by-hole tour of the track, lined with perspective. Owen explains,
If the Masters seems older than it is, that's largely because the tournament, alone among the majors, is conducted year after year on the same course. Every important shot is played against a backdrop that consists of every other important shot, all the way back to 1934. Every key drive, approach, chip, and putt is footnoted and cross-referenced across decades of championship play. Every swing--good or bad--has a context.
The context that Owen provides makes The Making of the Masters as indispensable as a hot putter. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
The Masters. For any golf fan, the words evoke the immortal greats of the game and their quest for the most prized trophy of all -- the green jacket of Augusta National Golf Club.
But behind the legendary links and timeless traditions is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood figures in the history of the Masters and Augusta National: Clifford Roberts, the club's chairman from its founding in 1931 until shortly before his death in 1977. Roberts' meticulous attention to detail, his firm authoritarian hand, and his refusal to settle -- even for perfection -- helped build the Masters into the tournament it is today, and Augusta National into every golfer's idea of heaven on earth.
David Owen was granted unprecedented access to the archives and records of Augusta National Golf Club. He has produced an honest and affectionate chronicle of the Masters, from its conception to its modern greatness, and a fascinating portrayal of Clifford Roberts -- whose perseverance and pride forged the Augusta National we know today.

Fairly Good-is the "Yin" to Sampson's "Yang".......2006-07-10
Picked this up by chance at the library...and realized I was reading the book that is the Yin to the Yang of the Curt Sampson book The Masters : Golf, Money, and Power in Augusta, Georgia.
Both books look at the same event. Owens focuses only on the beauty spots, while Sampson goes out of his way to find the warts. Owens keeps his story within the walls of the country club, while Sampson traces the development of the golf course and the town and how each impacts the other.
I can't help but feel that Owens book was written as a rebuttal to Sampson's book...and even there it seems to be a surgical strike method rather than a massive refutation type of rebuttal. Example: Sampson quotes specific sums of money in regard to Roberts worth, but is seemingly talking about the sums after factoring inflation...Owens takes these same numbers, uses what appears to be the original number without considering inflation, and then says Sampsons numbers are wrong. Example: Frank Stranahan finishes #2 in the Masters, then is banned the next year for taking multiple practice shots from the same spot (despite warnings). Owens focuses on the action, and says Cliff Roberts action in punishing Stranahan was appropriate. Sampson takes the issue and focuses on the fact that other people did the same thing, but were never punished. Example: Owens examines Roberts marvelous relations with Jones, Eisenhower, and the like, and asks how could a person that had the trust of such great men be the curmudgeon that Sampson and others have made him out to be? Sampson notes how Roberts treated people over whom he had power very poorly but worked hard to get into the good graces of people who could advance his goals.
These two books are as the results of two different men writing about the same pattern in a Rohrschach (sp?) test-they see the same facts and come up with different answers.
So if you want a balanced view of the Masters, don't read either this book or Sampson's book-READ THEM BOTH, then come to your own conclusion.
Outstanding Story About the World's Most Outstanding Golf Tournament........2006-03-16
There is an aura about Augusta National and about the Masters. This book comes as close as words can come to capturing that aura and communicating it to the reader. The Masters is special in and to the world or sport. This book tells you how it came to be and why it continues.
A great read.......2004-07-07
This book is a must read for Masters' fans. The history of the area as well as to golf club itself adds to the enjoyment. I read it in 2000 when we first obtained Practice Round tickets. When we were lucky enough to get tickets again in 2004, I purchased a copy for the reading pleasure of the folks who went along on the trip. All enjoyed the read and it prompted a lot of discussion on the car trip to Augusta.
Is it slanted in favor of the club? Maybe, but how many authors are truly unbiased?
The Fat Rich Guys At Augusta Can Buy Anything.......2003-05-06
Apparently, when Curt Sampson, a highly-regarded and critically acclaimed author, penned his book about The Masters, it ticked off the members there even more so than did Martha Burk. David Owen is a journeyman writer who hacks a column for one of the golf magazines. He was paid by Augusta National to write a rebuttal to Sampson's book. A big deal was made of the fact that Owen was given "exclusive access" to club archives.
All is sweetness, light and goodness among the azaleas and loblolly pines, heaven knows. Owen even goes so far as to negatively mention Sampson's work by name (tacky). If you don't smell the odor of rotten eggs by now, you probably think Hootie Johnson is an intellectual and a feminist at heart. (Hootie, if you had just thrown the letter away, you could have avoided this whole mess! That was flat-out dumb.) However, maybe Mr. Owen will get to write another book with exclusive access to Augusta's archives, regarding their valiant efforts to find a female member. Remember your integrity, David - that means once you're bought, you stay bought. Advice: unless you're a member at Augusta National, don't waste your time and money on this drivel.
Outstaning .....I could not put it down.......2002-02-16
This is not a book about golf. It is the outstanding history of a national treasure it's people and how it almost went bankrupt, and was saved by the dedication and love of Clifford Roberts. The book is of history, business, caring, commitement and amazing dedication. If Clifford Roberts were alive today, people would beg him to give motivational talks, but he would turn down all offers. He was a very private man who influenced the lives U.S. Presidents. Clifford was a skin flint who for no reason would hire the poor friend or relative of a kitchen worker or on hearing that a greens keepers wife was ill, borrowed a members private jet to fly her to his doctor for tratment. He was a complex yet simple man.
WARNING, if you start reading this book do so on a Friday night when you don't have anything planned on the weekend as you won't be able to put it down.

LangenscheidtGerman/English Dictionary.......2007-10-17
Translations (German/English and English/German very accurate. Dictionary very useful for everyday usage of common language questions.
If there is a negative it is physical. The book is rather thick and a little unwieldy as a result.
Useful little Dictionary........2007-10-06
I used this dictionary when I trekked through the outskirts of Germany. There are some inconveniences to it, for example, finding the gender and past tense of certain words is tedious. However, once you get the system down, its portability and quick reference capabilities are useful. I suggest the Harper-Collins series dictionaries for a more reliable and useful source, but this one is great for keeping with you on trips or in your backpack at college for quick reference. Recommended!

better than oxford-duden pocket.......2007-04-26
As a graduate student in Humanities, I have been using the big Oxford-Duden as a main reference in my research. The big O-D is fantastic for this purpose, but it is way too big to carry around. So I had been looking for a smaller dictionary which fits into my backpack. I own Langenscheidt's universal dictionary to carry arround in my pocket when I'm in Germany, but that one's too brief to use in a more serious setting e.g., studying German at a language school. L's pocket dictionary (which is actually too big to fit in your pocket) is also a little too small. I have thus seriously considered the pocket O-D and L's compact dictionary, and L's is clearly the winner. Here are my reasons:
1. L's has pronunciation keys for german entries, while the O-D doesn't. (The O-D instead has pronunciation keys for English entries.)
2. L's has much more (30,000) words and phrases.
3. L's is much smaller. (They are both very thick. But while L's is a size of a small airport paperback, the O-D is much larger - it's about the size of a penguin classics, only much thicker. The O-D simply wastes much space - its pages have more space than L's, and its font is bigger. L's uses very thin dictionary papers, while the O-D doesn't.)
4. L's has much more idiomatic expressions (There are 15 of them for 'helfen' in L's and 2 in the O-D.).
My only problem with L's is that it does not have entry words in blue, as the big O-D and the pocket L's do. (The pocket O-D doesn't either.)
Best Dictionary ever (as far as I know).......2007-03-22
As a German living in the US, I can only highly recommend this dictionary!!!
I find really everything I don't know but wanna know. Langenscheidt is well known in Germany, and believe me, I tried a lot of different dictionaries by other publishers so far, but this publisher is still the best! By the way, especially this edition as a well-sized paperback and not too heavy one allows you to carry it wherever you may need it...
Langenscheidt's German Dictionary.......2007-01-04
I have found this dictionary to be very useful. First of all ive been learning german for a while and i havnt found a word thats not in this dictionary. Its layed out in a easy to read and understand fashion. The biggest bonus for me was the very easy to carry with you size.
I would recommend it to anyone learning german!

Translation.......2004-12-04
This is one of the worst translations into Spanish I have seen and there are many bad ones out there. It is sloppy, inexact and sometimes plain wrong. I feel sorry for the people who are learning Spanish and read this. I had bought it for my grandchild but I will certainly not give it to her and I'm sorry I bought it.
Wonderful!.......2000-06-20
This a great book for two reasons. First, the stories are interesting and well-written. Second, if you are learning Spanish, as I am, the dual language is very helpful. Read Spanish on one side and check yourself on the other. The author has written another book or two which are very good too!
