Book Description
How to master the power of buzz
Trendspotters and bestselling authors Marian Salzman and Ira Matathia demystify buzz and show how marketers can create and leverage it for the success of their products and services. The world we inhabit is in constant flux, and the captive audience on which advertisers relied for years no longer exists. Branding today requires a flexibility and creativity that have thus far eluded many traditional practitioners. When there is no clear forum for communicating your brand message to the audience, you must have your audience do it for you. The authors show how and why buzz works, examining case studies like Kate Spade, Madonna, Bulgari, Ford, Nokia, and French Connection. They explore the role specific consumer groups play in setting trends, show how influence works, reveal the efficacy of shock ads, and explain how to manage brand momentum. This book is a dynamic guide that sheds new light on the topic of buzz using real-world examples and case studies that show how marketers can manufacture the seemingly authentic word-of-mouth to which today's cynical consumer responds.

Timeless advice..........2007-01-17
I was surfing the WEB looking for some resources on Creating Demand for products and services when I came upon this book. I immediately bought it and began reading.
There are steps to building demand for a product or service and creating the WOM (Word of mouth or "buzz") all marketers long for. By cleverly cultivating buzz, small businesses with small budgets can level the marketing playing field.
IF you want to create excitement about your product or service or launch a new product, start with BUZZ!

Buzzing.......2004-11-06
Bought this book after trying to find more creative ways to market my internet product. Having worked in advertising on the creative side for years, this book really opened my eyes to a variety of interesting approaches to getting the word...out.
Great...
Not a deep dive.......2004-07-27
Buzz relies on its anecdotes and case studies to provide insight and explanation of the topic. The example-ware is interesting enough to keep the pages turning--the book's an easy read--but I was hoping for more. Using a diving analogy, if great business texts were scuba diving, Buzz would be snorkeling. While some of the material was thought-provoking, the text casually cruises around, and never really gets down below the surface.
If you're looking to get an idea of post-Barnum, modern influence marketing, Buzz works. If you're looking for exhaustive analysis of the title material, descriptive techniques, or methods, this may not be the book for you.
As an aside, there are repeated references to the authors' own company, which only detract from the work.
A footnote: The book includes an entire chapter on and shock and negative marketing. By virtue of posting this review, I realize I'm contributing to Buzz' own buzz.
Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-07
This book is essentially a compendium of standard marketing lore repackaged as a new gospel of brand building. Breezily if sometimes awkwardly written, it provides some useful insight into how technology and social changes have reduced the importance of advertising and magnified the impact of person-to-person chatter. Abundant examples, anecdotes and observations on current events help keep it relevant to contemporary business. Given that books trying to catch the next wave of what works can be called a success if they deliver a single insight that a reader can use effectively, we find this book successful and worth reading.
EURO-RSCG MOUTHPIECE, LACKS FOCUS, BUT INTERESTING CASES.......2003-11-09
When used in the context of marketing, the word "Buzz" usually conjures up connotations of PR or creative activities executed in unprecedented ways, rather than old-school advertising.
That's a notion that the EuroRSCG authors of this book clearly do not share. Everything even remotely within the gamut of marketing is smooshed in to this all-encompassing treatise. No reason, they felt for instance, to leave out traditional creative that successfully carries "shock value" (e.g., voyeuristic ads) and thus by implication, "buzz."
Personally, I was specifically interested in examples of usage of new media such as mobile phones or blogging, but both these issues get abysmally meagre mention in the book. A case of Amnesty International from Netherlands is mentioned regarding the use of SMS. As for blogs, we are recommended, in 2 paltry pages of coverage, to keep ourselves "apprised" with what users around the world may be writing about our brands.
That's a bit like saying corporate governance is crucial for business, so well, keep your accounts clean. Right. How about a conceptual or theoretical framework, or even just a couple of concrete suggestions to actually DO something about it?
While the case studies are occasionally nifty -- e.g., MTV's hold on the spring break season for the youth in US; or Nando's in South Africa which uses creative advertising to position itself against McDonalds and KFC -- the book simply flip-flops all across the board trying to flesh out the fashionable catchet of buzz.
In the absence of any directional guidelines about how to CATALYZE such "buzz," the book falls a bit short of it promised claims. I'd still give it a 3/5 for a pretty interesting marketing read in general, it's just the title that's a bit of a gyp.

Book Description
This international comparison of pension plans lends great understanding to the transformation taking place in almost every nation around the world. It covers ten of the twelve countries of the European Union, as well as the United States and Japan. The project is interdisciplinary, covering a number of fields, such as economics, law, actuarial science, sociology, and political science, that contribute to the analysis of retirement income systems. The chapters vary in scope - some are comparative, some are restricted to a single country or to one type of plan in one country. Despite their diversity, the chapters share a common awareness of three aspects of pension plans: the importance of actors' roles in shaping each system, the different economic and social domains affected by retirement plans, and the interconnections between social security and supplementary plans.

The hands-on activities cover a wide range of environmental topics-water, soil, wildlife, plants, ecosystems, weather, environmental problems, and oceans. Each chapter begins with a clear explanation of the topic, followed by detailed lesson plans for activities, supplementary and alternative activities, vocabulary definitions, and discussion questions that enhance student understanding of key concepts. This revised edition features new chapters on oceans, global warming, the greenhouse effect, El Nino, and recycling. Book Description
In the most comprehensive guide available for entry into the fast-growing sport of Muay Thai kickboxing, personal trainer, Thai boxing coach and experienced fighter Chad Boykin leads you through every aspect of the game. Whether you long to test your mettle in the ring or simply get in the best shape of your life, this book will show you how. With clear, instructive photos and descriptions, Boykin demonstrates the conditioning exercises that provide the foundation for the power and speed of Muay Thai. Then he takes you step by step through the brutal elbow and knee strikes, punches, clenches and kicks that form your offensive arsenal, plus the blocks and evasion techniques that will confound your opponent. Training drills teach you to flow from one move to the next with accuracy and confidence. A veteran of the ring, Boykin gives novice fighters inside information on what to expect and offers advice on fighting styles and strategies. Whether you've been participating in kickboxing for years or are new to the sport, this book will give you the edge you need to succeed.
Customer Reviews:
it was alright.......2006-01-29
While this book does have some good information, and lots of photos to demonstrate techniques, the author doesn't even actually seem to demonstrate that he realizes any difference between muay thai and kick boxing. All in all, i would rather not have bought this book, but am not terribly upset that i did. So, not a terrible buy, but don't expect too much.
Terrible.......2005-11-27
The author spends the entire introduction claiming how Muay Thai is the most effective self defense martial art out there. But in doing so, he turns a condescending attitude towards every other martial art. He says that Hollywood makes 120 pound women believe that they can defend themselves with "windmill" punches. Yet the author, himself, is the one who succumbs to the myths surrounding other martial arts.
So he believes other martial arts like Tae Kwon Do and Karate are useless because all they teach is flashy movie moves. But this only goes to show that the author has absolutely no idea what the other arts teach authentically. TKD and Karate do not emphasize 720 degree jump spinning monkey kicks to protect oneself. In fact, the first thing you learn in a TKD or Karate school is to punch and to defend yourself against a punch. Just because all these Hollywood and Hong Kong movies utilise flashy moves does not mean that other martial arts teach that this is the way to defend yourself in a real fight.
Kickboxing has its limitations just like any other art. If you get grabbed and thrown by a judoka, what are you going to do? Does kickboxing teach you how to fight from the ground?
If you're a Brazilian jiu-jitsu artist and you get into a fight with more than one opponent, what are you going to do? Slap on a submission hold while a guy comes up from behind you and stabs you?
Instead of proclaiming that he and his style of fighting is the best, the author should really think about what he's saying. Style bashing (as it is commonly known in the martial arts circles) only shows ignorance.
I haven't seen this author defend himself in a street fight or fight in a no holds barred tournament. But I have seen Tae Kwon Do and Karate guys defend themselves perfectly in a real life street fight against multiple opponents and in one on one situations. And there was a K1 (Kickboxing) competition in which Muay Thai fighters fought against Kyokushin Karate opponents. Guess who won? That's right, Karate.
And these are gripes I have just about the Introduction!
The rest of the book was pretty useless. He says that the book is about conditioning and techniques. The conditioning section only consists of pictures of a guy lifting weights.
...all I can say is that it was completely useless.
No effort to tell how much weight to use, how many sets, how many reps, and workout schedules? I know how to lift a dumbbell and do a bench press. I don't need this guy's book to show me a picture of it.
And the techniques section was very basic. If you have even seen a kickboxing competition, you will probably learn more from just watching it than from the useless (!@$&) this guy shows.
This book is a definite waste of money written by an egotistical ignoramus who wants to sound like he is the best fighter in the world and knows everything about fighting. Yet he can't even put together a simple book on anything useful about kickboxing. Don't buy unless you really want to waste your money. There are much better books on Muay Thai on Amazon. Actually, any other book on Mauy Thai on Amazon is better than this one.
I was duped into buying this based on all the other favorable reviews on Amazon. But now I know that they must have been left by the author or his friends. Or by people who have never trained seriously in Muay Thai or any other martial art.
A much better book is Complete Kickboxing by Martina Sprague and Keith Linvingston.
The best Muay Thai training book on the Market.......2005-08-15
If you want to be the best striker in your dojo this is the book to buy. Also buy all the Benny Urquidez Martial Arts training books together your knowledge of striking will be awsome. Also join a good Muay Thai School then compete against Tae Kwon Do Stylists. Then see how easy it is to defeat Tae Kwon Do Black Belts. Buy the book its brillant.
Americanized Muay Thai; well-rounded conditioning.......2004-02-15
The emphasis of this book seems to be conditioning more than technique. However, that doesn't mean it isn't good. There are five full chapters on physical fitness, and it's probably the most complete program I've seen in a martial arts book. The conditioning covered is everything from calesthetics to weight training to stretching to cardio. For those who are wondering what fitness has to do with fighting, well, it's a lot easier to defeat a person of equal skill and greater size if you have superior conditioning. Anyway, I found these chapters easy to follow, and very insightful. As far as the techniques go, they are described fairly well, and following a single offensive move are the defenses against it. Punches are given the most detail, with sidebars providing extra tips for each punch. Just for the record, pgs. 15-70 are devoted to these techniques. There's also a chapter on training drills, which covers equipment and different drills to do based on what skill you want to emphasise. On the down side, the "self-defense" section was kind of baren, the history chapter seemed a little rushed, and many combinations seemed to favor no-holds-barred contests instead of Muay Thai, in that there were throws and chokes. Overall, a very good book, I just don't think it truly presented Muay Thai. MMA/NHB atheletes might find it useful, as well as folks who are trying to spruce up their self-defense/full contact training. Also, anyone who wants to use a Kickboxing-based workout program.
Great book for advanced beginners and intermediates.......2003-09-13
Chad Boykin writes a solid book on kickboxing technique and tactics. The book has plenty of illustrative and high contrasting photos to demonstrate his concepts. The book layout is logical and covers a wide variety of bases (those already familiar with weight training and aerobic training may want to skip it). The real value of the book, I believe, is in his use of combinations and pad drills. These parts provide a great reference and empower the intermediate fighter in making his/her own favorite personal combinations. Too few books provide such detail and examples for this important material... As in any case this provides a good supplement and/or refresher of muay thai, though people truly wanting to learn this great style of fighting should start with a qualified instructor. More advanced fighters will not get too much out of this manual; there is very little material on the culture of Muay Thai and how it is practiced in Thailand, very little coverage of principles and mechanics of the style (which should also be addressed for true beginners) and very little on fighting strategy. Boykin provides a solid book for those interested in tactics which ideally suits advanced beginners and intermediate practitioners of the martial sport.

You want Hebrew Bible examples with grammar? .......2007-04-16
Page Kelley's "Biblical Hebrew" is loaded with lots of Hebrew scriptures to illustrate his grammatical points. If you like learning with Biblical examples, this is for you. There are exercises in each grammar chapter, plus separate Heb to Eng Vocabulary, verb tables, and glossary.
Somewhat helpful.......2007-01-25
I was looking for a bridge from my good commandment of modern Hebrew to Biblical language and found this particular book kind of disappointing.
First, its grammar explanations are not always satisfying even its own examples, let alone other Biblical verses
Second, exercises are very dull and are just the same for each lesson and very basic and not challenging enough
Third, I find it very confusing to learn the verb system by stem patterns ( which are hard to recognize in text sometimes ), instead of going over 7 stem patterns and showing how different verbs behave themselves in different stem patterns ( well, it might be helpful perspective nevertheless)
Fourth, the list of words at the end of each lesson very poorly reflect the vocabulary of the lesson and vice versa - many words never show up in the main text( the same for the hebrew-english dictionary in the end )
Fifth, I just couldn't manage some grammatical concepts, even reading it over and over again, like for example dividing the word into syllables, all in all he says you can tell the new syllable if it starts with vocal sh'va and... you can tell the vocal sh'va if it starts a new syllable ( brrrr.. )
But I'd say it gave me some basic tools for Bible reading, some reference point. The book could be improved very easily and its print and format I found very nice and handy
A nice book...........2005-11-26
It's a nice book for beginner to learn Hebrew. The grammer and the structure are easy. The exercise of each lesson is quite helpful. The disadvantage is that you have to take a long time to finish it...
Great quality........2005-09-22
The book I receved was in great shape. Took a little long, but nothing to complian about. Overall great transaction.
A Jewish perspective on this excellent book........2004-08-24
I haven't seen any reviews of this book explicitly from a Jewish point of view, so this is just a short perspective - the other reviews are all well-written and describe the quality of the book well. There are, however, two minor points that the Jewish student should be aware of.
First, the author is a well-respected scholar and linguist; however, he is a member of the Southern Baptist church. While this won't matter to most readers (Jewish and non-Jewish alike), I do realize that there are Jews who will want to avoid the book due to that organization's purported anti-Semitic leanings. Whether or not those leanings exist is another debate - I point this out merely as an informational comment.
Despite the fact that the author comes from a Christian background, the course is devoid of any reference to any Christian beliefs outside of what is referred to as their 'Old Testament'. This is a commendable approach to make the text acceptable to all students.
The second point is in reference to the dialect that is used in the course. This book teaches Sephardic pronunciation - this makes sense from an academic standpoint, as Sephardic is the more modern form of Hebrew and is more common than the Ashkenazic pronunciation. Most Orthodox synagogues, however, still use the Ashkenazic pronunciation in services - it tends to be more condusive for liturgy as opposed to conversation, where Sephardic is generally superior. Orthodox Jews who are using this book should be aware that the Hebrew spoken in their services is going to sound different in several specific ways. The only major differences between the two forms is in vowel pronunciation, so if an Ashkenazic pronunciation guide can be obtained (they're fairly prolific online), this can be used in conjunction with the book for learning both dialects.
I found this to be an excellent guide for learning biblical Hebrew, and would highly recommend it to most Jewish adults who are either learning for the first time, or relearning after a period of disuse.
Customer Reviews:
Great way to learn the basics.......2006-11-10
This was the required text for a Hebrew class I am taking. I found the book easy to understand and use. Each chapter is summarized with a list of "shortcuts" that are very helpful in understanding the basics of Hebrew. The only negative is that the enphasis is on mechanics. Much of why things are as they are in Hebrew is becuase of how it is spoken. That perspective had to be added by my professor.
I'm not planning to become a Hebrew scholar, but would like to understand what I am reading when I use a Lexicon or other tool. This book is excellent for someone who wants that kind of understanding.
Useful, but ...........2006-04-22
This is a good and useful book if all you want to do is check out a particular word or phrase in a Hebrew lexicon (i.e., BDB) but it is in no way a substitute for a regular course of study in Biblical Hebrew.
If you really want to understand Biblical Hebrew and work with it, you need to settle in for slogging through to the end of a couple of semesters of study.
On the other hand, if what you really want is a 'once over lightly', this would be an excellent choice.
Wonderful!.......2003-05-20
This is the best book for beginners of Biblical Hebrew language. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Part One: Legacy of Fire. Geological forces are still at work as the eruption of Mt. Diablo brings permanent physical and psychological change to the San Francisco East Bay. Part Two: Fluid States. After a mild earthquake, the earthen dam high above Fremont, CA, begins to erode, spilling water into Alameda Creek. Jenny Powers is stranded at her friend Lisa's house, and the girls have a medical emergency on their hands!
Customer Reviews:
All three books in the trilogy are very good.......1999-03-20
Jenny and her friends are captivating in their trilogy revolving around three years of high school. "Earth Rising", "Raging Skies" and "Global Warning" are filled with fictional natural disasters plus international intrigue some 20 years in the future and provide the teens with daring challenges. How they manage the situations in the San Francisco Bay Area setting is realistically presented and keeps interest high. Hopefully Nancy will follow up with future books as Jenny becomes a senior. Armin's new life would be of interest. Congratulations to a new author.
