Book Description
How do companies like Microsoft and Wal-Mart rise to the top of their industries and dominate year after year, while others like People Express and LA Gear burn out after promising starts? In Changing the Game, Eric Flamholtz and Yvonne Randle, two leading management consultants, reveal that the key to success lies in how you transform your organization. Virtually all organizations face critical transition points in their life cycle, when they must change how they play the game, or perish. Flamholtz and Randle focus here on three critical moments: the move from entrepreneurial to professional management, when a firm reaches a stage of growth where it can no longer operate in an informal, unstructured way; the revitalization of an established business that is losing ground to competitors; and a radical change in a business vision. The authors show, for instance, how American Century Investors made the transformation from a $50 million entrepreneurship to a professionally managed company with a market value of $2 billion; how IBM, one of the great American corporations, was forced by the proliferation of PCs in the 1980s to overhaul its business to survive; and how Starbucks Coffee, originally a Seattle coffee-bean store, was inspired by Milans romantic coffee bars to recreate itself and transformed an entire industry. The book concludes with a look at how one company--Bell Carter Olive Company--pulled together all the concepts and tools presented in the book and successfully changed the game. Changing the Game provides a comprehensive framework and a set of tools for the strategic management of organizational transformation. It will help managers meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive business environment.
Customer Reviews:
"Business is a game without an end"........2000-08-21
"In its broadest sense, a game involves procedures or strategies for gaining certain ends. The game of business is to use resources (people, money, ideas, equipment, and tools) to gain certain ends desired by the organization. For a corporation, the objectives of the game are to increase profitability and shareholder value...Whether it is recognized or not, all organizations operate under a 'game plan'. The 'organizational game plan' consists of the basic concept of the game being played as well as the fundamental strategy for playing the game...No matter what game an organization chooses to play or how it chooses to play it, there are certain periods in an organization's life when 'the game' (either the game itself or how it is played) needs to be changed. This occurs when there have been major changes in the economic environment, or some kind of revolution in technology or the nature of competition. It can also happen simply as the result of significant, rapid organizational growth...As used in this book, the phrase, 'changing the game' has a dual meaning. First, it refers to changes in the game being played by an organization. This involves changes in the business an organization is actually in. In addition, the phrase also refers to changes in the way the game is being played (i.e., how a firm operates). Both are major aspects of a business and both can require major transformations, either at different points or even at the same time. These transformations are the focus of this book and define what we mean by 'changing the game'...During the past few years, there has been increasing use of the terms 'transformation' and 'change' in business literature. Some people unfortunatelly use these terms synonymously. That is not the way we will use these terms in this book...Our focus in Changing the Game is on transformation rather than merely incremental changes" (pp.4-9).
In this context, Eric G. Flamholtz and Yvonne Randle:
* describe 'pure' types of transformations, including what they have termed Transformations of the First, Second, and Third Kinds:
1. Entrepreneurial transformations to professional management including the special case of family business transformations - First Kind (more detailed discussion and examples of this kind see Chapter 3).
2. Revitalization transformations of established companies - Second Kind (more detailed discussion and examples of this kind see Chapter 4).
3. Business vision transformations - Third Kind (more detailed discussion and examples of this kind see Chapters 5-6).
and note that actual organizations sometimes engage in compound transformations, consisting of more than one type of transformation simultaneously.
* present a framework that managers can use to understand and plan what must be done to build an organization with a high probability of long-term success, and examine four critical factors that influence the design of a successful business enterprise:
1. The 'business concept' that defines the business a company is in.
2. Six key 'building blocks' of organizational success.
3. The 'size' of the enterprise.
4. The 'environment' (markets, competition, and trends) in which the enterprise will exist.
* focus on the strategic transformational planning process in order to provide a tool for assisting in the process of managing transformations.
* examine how to design an organizational structure that will support a firm's transformation.
* examine the issues involved in transforming an organization's structure after a strategic transformational plan has been developed, and show that the choice of the form of organization to help implement a transformational plan is a strategic issue in itself.
* focus on the behavioral aspects of organizational transformations, and describe the important role leadership plays in not only helping to transform the behavior of individuals within an organization, but in changing the overall game that the organization is playing.
* discuss two additional, powerful tools -performance management systems and corporate culture management- that can be used to transform the behavior of all employees within an organization.
* present ten key lessons for Managing Transformations and Changing the Game.
Finally, they argue that "unlike chess and the NCAA basketball tournament, business is a game without an end. There is no national championship tournament for business. The game goes on and on. In a sense, a basketball program is like a business. A given team may win a championship one year, but there is always the next year and the next and the next, just as in business. As soon as one profitable year is completed, the next emerges. There is, however, one constant in the business game year after year: the need to understand the process of managing organizational transformations. Accordingly, the final lesson is: adapt and increase the probability of future success; or remain fixed in the existing paradigm and risk failure. The game is there for the taking".
I highly recommend.
Clear, crisp and practically powerfull tool........1999-10-12
Not only is this book written in a clear and crisp manner, but the tools described in the book are practical to use and the results easy to interpret.
Excellent help in creating a "map" to your objectives........1999-05-05
How do you begin to look at your business "on the horizon"? The company's management team must create a "map" which will lead the organization to it's objectives. Eric will ask you "by the way, do you know what your objectives are?" He really helps you clarify and organize. As Yogi Berra once said "If you don't know where you're going, you're probably going to get there"!
Excellent Book!.......1999-03-16
This book is extremely useful for general managers. It has had a profound impact on the way I think about organizations. As authors, Flamholtz and Randle are clear, logical, and practical. As professors, their years of experience as successful strategy consultants translated into one of the best classes I have taken during my MBA years. I highly recommend this book, and will buy it for my friends who are passionate about management.
This the book for managing the business!.......1998-10-20
It is one of the best books that I never read in my life. Well structured, clear, direct to the point. It is the perfect book if you are looking for frames in order to analyze your business. I strongly suggest to all the MBAs.

Customer Reviews:
A thoroughly practical, easy-to-read primer for new faculty........1999-11-04
I read Dr. Uno's book prior to beginning my first semester teaching undergraduate biology at a small, liberal arts college. The content is well organized and includes pragmatic as well as philosophical/theoretical information, with particular emphasis on the former. It includes advice on planning the course, understanding how students learn, teaching practice (with an excellent treatment of inquiry), assessment, lecture and discussion strategies, and dealing with common problems.
The book is especially credible not only because it is written by a college teacher who understands the difference between "teaching material" and "student learning" (and one who writes clearly and unpretentiously) but because it grows out of case studies centered around the real experiences of six new faculty members. Every new faculty member will see himself/herself in one of the situations described and connect the practical suggestions to real-classroom situations. For those unable to read the book from cover to cover due to time limiations (probably many readers), the simple organization facilitates rapid identification of items of immediate interest. This really is a survival manual. It is helping me to anticipate and make sense of a frantic, stressful, and exciting first year of full-time teaching. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching college science.

Customer Reviews:
harvey diamond's best book.......2007-02-11
this is a really good book. his original fit for life book also has some very good info in it, the diet regimen part of it less so in my opinion. but here he puts it all together, and focuses primarily on the link between diet and disease, using cancer as his main example. it has the feel of a great debunking text, as in, here is the fundamental and unassailable link between diet and health, the food we eat and the illness and disease that follow -- a basic truth that the AMA, FDA and pharmaceutical companies prefer you not see, as they pour billions of dollars of dollars into ads and countless propaganda. and then he shows, like john robbins' diet for a new america, that the paradigm of destruction of the S.A.D. (sad or standard american diet) extends not only to our health but also to pollution and ecological damage on a grand scale. the type of book you should read and then send copies to your friends. cheers, jg
The Truth Unleashed.......2004-07-23
This is a great book with Harvey at times unleashing his full venom at the medical profession, food industry and fellow dieticians. He is speaking up for the truth and I happen to believe him. Why? Because I have tested and followed the Fit for Life principles myself and they work.
However before reading this book (which I call Fit for Life III), I would advise buying and following the principles laid out in the first two books i.e. Fit for Life and Fit for Life II. They are easier to read, gentler (probably because they were written in partnership with Marilyn!) and cover the essential dietary/lifestyle principles you need to follow.
This book contains exactly the same text word for word as Fit for Life: A New Beginning (apart from the cover is different and the book is physically bigger), so if you want to save yourself some money I would buy that one instead. I would have rated the book 5 stars, if it was not for this point.
This is an absolute must read!.......2002-07-17
If you are at all interested in learning how to have complete and total control of your own health and how to confidently and easily live a sickness, pain and disease free life this book is definitely for you. In a climate of ever increasing statistics of disease and ill-health the clear and simple ideas of this book are nothing short of a Godsend. Since the medical profession, the single biggest industry in this country, makes the enormous amount of money that it does by the population being and remaining sick and full of disease they would have us believe that living a healthy disease free life is totally beyond our control. Well, thanks to the brilliant, yet extremely simple methods put forth by this author, the reader is able to take his/her health back into their own hands and truly live without sickness pain or worry of most, if not all diseases. The information in this book is as simple and easy to understand as it is groundbreaking. This book could and should change the world and the way people view cancer, sickness, pain and other diseases. The author explains in remarkably common sense and simple terms exactly how to take total control of your health, vitality and weight by using your body's lymph system (which the author explains is the body's garbage collector). He clearly points out that like a car, our body is a machine, a complex living machine and that after a while due to residue of foods we eat, toxins, chemicals and pollutants in foods, spent cellular material, and other wastes our bodies become "silted up" and require an "oil change" so to speak just like our cars do, otherwise sickness plagues us and disease begins to form. Not only is the information in the book groundbreaking and life changing, but the author, Harvey Diamond, who is known for his humorous and entertaining writing style, delights and entertains the reader with a book that I could not put down until I found myself finishing the last page. I recommend this book to absolutely everyone who can read and who desires to be healthy, energetic and disease free and truly feel this book could turn around the entire cancer and disease epidemic in this country and put the power of your own health back into people's own hands where it belongs! Not reading this book is just like turning your back on a pile of gold the size of a mountain. Thank you Harvey Diamond!

Medically sound advice for mind, body and spirit!.......2000-09-03
As one who normally avoids "self-help" books, the title amused me enough to pick this book up from the sale bin - despite not being a business-jock. Expecting yet another business adaptation of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" or Musashi's "The Book of Five Rings" I was relieved to find a wealth of useful information on all aspects of health (mind, body & spirit). And best of all, from a medical doctor (not some self-styled health guru with the latest fad).
This has become my "bible" of the best medically sound advice to (getting &) staying fit, healthy and sane. It's all here : human psysiology and how nutrition works, fitness advice: from hotel circuits to yoga and stress-coping techniques(effective worrying!).
Armed with this knowledge about yourself, the next medical check-up you go for should be the most cost-effective you've ever had!
Great book, great man, and great chance to change your life........1999-02-04
In the years that pass and as your body gets more out of shape, Dr. Mcgannon offers clear insite on changing behavior patterns that make your life better. We all make choices and following his advice was the best thing I have ever done. Juliet Mcgannon is a jewel herself with her knowledge on excersize and fitness. RH
The book that really will change your life!.......1997-08-19
If you are a typical busy executive (or non-executive and travelling more than a couple of times a month, this is a must.
Dr McGannon uses the story of how one executive manages to survive a heart attack on a business trip in the far east to tell in an engaging and humorous way how you can improve your fitness and physical stamina without missing out on the fun side of life.
He shows how you can change your diet to be more healthy and still manage to attend all of those important business dinners. He shows how you do not have to travel with a huge exercise kit if you want to keep fit on the road. (Actually the average hotel room has all you need and it does not take a lot of time.) Most importantly he shows how all of these can be integrated into a good lifestyle which does not prevent you from following that punishing schedule that you have to keep.
After reading it I lost over 10Kg, significantly lowered my blood pressure and improved my fitness.
I have bought lots of copies of this for the folks that I work with. Inturn, they have all bought copies for their own staff.
Terrific, Useful Guide - Highly Recommended!.......1997-07-19
Dr. McGannon uses a unique format (the book is written like a novel) to illustrate a number of ways to improve personal fitness and quality of life (e.g. nutrition, exercise, focus, confidence). I met Michael recently at INSEAD in France, where he is based, and found him incredibly inspiring, yet with a down to earth and practical tool. The keys are in lowering body fat, "bad cholesterol", blood pressure, and he gives excellent guides in the book, which is an easy read. A great book

Book Description
In this book, Chris gets honest about girls, homework, alcohol, and drugs, and what it's really like to be famous. Chris also gives you an insider's view of what it's like to film a movie, how they do those cool special effects, and what it's like to work with so many famous people! Chris has endured bullies, being called everything from "four eyes" to "nerd," and even taken heat over his personal faith and attitudes. Still, Chris has consistently come out on top just by being himself, and he'll show you how you can too!
Customer Reviews:
Give the kid a break..........2007-07-30
I grew up with Chris and personally know that the situations and subjects of this book are absolutely real. I know he owns a jet and has a pilots license that he earned while still in High School. He was the youngest player ever to play in the Greater Greensboro Celebrity Pro Am Tournament, and is a very accomplished actor who has won 5 Young Artist awards. I don't sit at home and watch re-runs of Step by Step, but I think the accomplishments that Chris made so young in life are quite extroardinary. Even after he stopped acting regularly he continued to succeed and accel at everything he did. I have allot of respect for Chris. This book can teach you a thing or two about the pressures of growing up as a celebrity. Chris was working at 7 years old, and yet lived in a 4 bedroom house in Westminster through High School. He was very smart with his money and I'm sure we'll be seeing his name again in the future.
This Book is Most Definetely Not Cool.......2007-05-07
You know, this kid has some real nerve. Why on earth should I take advice from him? I mean, it is not like he is a real "star" like Erik Von Detten from Christmas Everyday fame. In fact, I allege there are blantant lies manafested in this book. I bet Beethoven can play a better game of golf than this kid. And not to mention that so called pilot's license! I would feel more safe being flown in a plane piloted by Stevie Wonder! I was looking for some real, genuine insight and advice about life. What a waste of three cents I paid for this book! I think Amazon should donate the remaining copies to the children in Africa. In conclusion, nothing disgussed me more thatn to learn Castile is a Kenny Chesney fan.
p.s. I hear he sits all alone at lunch, except on days when he makes reservations to dine in the janitors closet and makes conversation with the mop.
A Call for Castile to be Castrated Literacy-Wise........2005-02-09
This is without a doubt the worst thing I have ever come across in my entire life. I'll even go and assume it'll be the worst thing that will ever happen to me from here to my grave. Not only does Christopher Castile NOT know what being a teenager is like, I sincerely doubt he even knows what being a humane, caring person is like, or he wouldn't have unleashed this horrendous 135 pages of human refuse. I would rather hear the death rattle of my children, parents, and anyone else I have ever cared about than pick up this literacy abortion again. In fact, I would rather see a gruesome car crash close up than even look at the cover of this book again. This proves that even having a bit part in a ridiculous plot-based mediocre sitcom can give even the worst actors a quick cash-flow about 3 minutes after his 15 minutes were up. You make me sick, Christopher Castile, and I half-dread the day you have children; I despise the thought of you breeding your tainted DNA to future generations, but now you can put your own kids through the twisted evil that is reading your awful book as you have the other 10 people who read it. I hate you with every ounce of my being, and I will one day dance merrily with great rejoice on your forgotten grave.
Best book for teenagers.......2000-04-26
I think that this is a good thing for teenagers, and their problems in its teen days.I thing that Chris has write a very good book not only for the teenagers. There is a lot of stufs about the live, love, dating, drogs, and other things that happend to teenagers. I'm 17 years old and I like all Christopher's movies to.

To make things worse her tag-along friend (Rolland) won't leave her alone! The first day has been a disaster, and later in the week when she finally makes some friends they turn out to be boy crazy. After awhile things start to lookup for Roxanne, she gets a boyfriend and is finally fitting in! But then she has to make a major decision on what cool really is. To find out the problem and how she solves it read Definitely Cool.
This book was ok. The beginning started off a little bit slow. Things started to pick up towards the end, and it got VERY interesting. This book is all about fitting in, which is probably what a lot of teenagers can relate too.
I thought it was great.......2004-02-09
I bought the book when I was young and If you grow up in similar situations that the book has like I did, then you will enjoy it. I believe it is great for young african americans and people you were in there youth during the late 80's early 90's. I think the book is great for portraying life as the teenagers in the bronx.
A Definitely Cool Book.......2001-11-26
A Definitely Cool Book
Looking for a good book? Try Definitely Cool by Brenda Wilkinson. The book is about a girl who starts junior high and is really nervous. She makes new friends and gets a boyfriend. But she deals with a lot of prejudice. She is invited to a very bad party, during school! Does Roxanne go? Read the book to find out.
I really liked this book because it is about a girl starting junior high and it deals with a lot of everyday problems that teenagers face. I can relate to being at a new school because I just started middle school.
This book is unrealistic........1999-02-23
The language and actions of the kids and the parents are unrealistic. This book is a waste of time and money. The parents are too strict and the kids are trying too hard to be cool and fit in. School is nothing like this book has it.
This is a really good book If you are a teenage girl.......1998-01-22
This book is my favorit because it deals with things some girls have tro deal with!
