This is an excellent book for the individual who would like to consider living in a community that isn't the typical, isolated neighborhood. Reading this book has really opened my eyes to so many of the benefits of cohousing. Originally I thought that it was like an old-fashioned commune but that's not it at all. Kathryn McCamnat, as well as her architect husband, Chuck Durrett, really know what they're talking about.

A fabulous book which shows the beauty of the european style intentional community, with many enticing photos. It makes me think that even though it is difficult or impossible to utilize the pragmatic wisdom of traditional socialism on a national scale in the United States due to the misinformation and prejudice which has saturated our culture, it may be possible, practical and quite enjoyable to do it in small, intentional communities. While American culture has become infected with a disingenuous and artificial form of individualism which is the result of fallacious theories of econimics based on the superstition of Natural Law that has done nothing but leave individuals alienated, as well as economically disadvantaged, there have been many great experiments throughout history which provide examples of how a few of us can attempt to get rid of this societal sickness. The community known as New Harmony, founded by the Rappites and purchased by socialist thinker Robert Owen is one such example which was known as the "Athens of the West". There has been a renewed interest in this kind of community since the 1960's and rather than these communities failing like so many other fads, on the contrary, many have succeeded and there are now more than ever. Our society is desperate for a practical answer to it's own lack of connection between people and absence of cultural and generational continuity, whether it, or the individuals living in it are consciously aware of this fact or willing to admit it to themselves. While this book doesn't talk about communities like New Harmony, what the people in this book are doing is very much in that spirit, and I believe it holds the answers to many problems that can be used here and now. What we need now is something which will give us independence from the growing trend of corporate neofeudalism which values profit and underpaying labor over family, friends, real education (not education for money) self-enjoyment, and any hope of meaningful individuality (as opposed to the meaningless ideas of individualism propounded by free-market theories and shallow pseudo-philosophical and political fads like objectivism and libertarianism). I sincerely hope that one day that I can participate in such a community.

This book is the perfect place to begin considering if cohousing is for you. Beautifully illustrated it allows the reader to imagine themselves in cohousing. If your ready to make your project happen I recommend THE COHOUSING HANDBOOK by Chris Hanson.

How much action can one book trigger? I wonder how many of theprojects can be traced back to readers being inspired by thisbook.

Beautifully illustrated, well researched, the book conveys well the Aha erlebnis these architects must have experienced as they discovered these very liveable Danish communities.

For readers who like architecture and wonder what kind of housing community can deliver homeliness based on both privacy and community.

The Very Best Beginners Guide to Star-gazing.......2002-01-03

This little book is extremely well written and clearly explains the motions of the earth and stars, accompanied by simple star charts and general astronomica information for use by children or beginning adults. It is readily available from the ..., along with an excellent annual Observers Guide and Calendars.
Highly recommended for a concise, specific, introduction to astronomy. A great start and excellent value for anyone.

The opus magnum in my opinion........2000-08-04

Gerald Durrell was the first to claim that he was not a writer, he gave that honour up to his brother Lawerence. Gerald wrote first and foremost to pay for the Zoo in Jersey that was his life. Many of his books are hilarious accounts of his exploits in collecting the animals for his zoo. When he added an account of his youth in Corfu the book "My family and other animals" became a huge success, much to his surprise. It was some time before he wrote the absolutely hilarous "Rosie is my relative" which was his first work of true fiction. In this book I believe he reaches the pinnacle of his ability. Not as bellyachingly funny as "Rosie" this book is more poignant and very beautifully written. It is more poignant since it describes the rediscovery of the Mockery Bird which is a metaphor for the Dodo, that most famous of extinct species. Durrell fought all his life to save species from extinction and so I think that there is a special hope in his heart that emerges in this book. A hope for the future of animals.

Great pictures, no Orange Bowl Coverage.......2006-03-16

The book offers a terrific overview of the outstanding 2005 PSU football season, including a highlight of each regular season game. It is missing Orange Bowl coverage, so beware of that. It's also missing a shot of Michael Robinson's infamous hit on the Minnesota defender, which was one of the plays of the year. Overall, worth the cost to remember the season.

A great book for those who are new to site work on construction sites. Some things are outdated, esp. pictures, but it is a must have. Look for a survey 101 book as well.

Like one of the other reviewers I am a homeowner/handyman I was hoping to find a book on the proper way to grade, dig, etc...

This book is for the civil engineer, or project manager. It gives a good overall idea on the general concepts on how to do things related to grading/excavation. However, this book will not give you enough knowledge to do a project without additional experiences/references.

If you were a contractor who was getting ready to start a new job and needed to gain some general knowledge on a type of job you do not normally work, this book would be a good starting point.

If you are not a contractor, unless you are about to start a REALLY BIG job, with multiple pieces of large equipment, this book is of the wrong scope for you.

An excellent reference.......2000-08-07

This is a book written for apprentice operating engineers. As such, it teaches the basics of road survey, grading, compaction, pipe laying, stakeout, drainage. It goes into detail on how to read survey stakes, mark and read witness lath, calculate differences in height, read and use a hand level, stake slopes, layout a subdivison, find the bottom elevation of pipelines, proper compaction of road base, and just about anything else a road worker could think of. This is an easy to use paperback book with many drawings which help explain the text. I can't tell you how useful this book has been to me.For those readers that are involved with excavation, survey, inspection (me), contracting, this book IS MUST HAVE.

Even Young People can Change the World.......2006-10-12

This is an excellent book for middle school children. Stone wants to be like his hero Dr. King. He is active in his church and has been chosen to be the jr. leader for the bus going to the March On Washington. But his father refuses to let him go and he has to watch it on tv. The young people are entertaining yet it is teaching a definite lesson.

JUST LIKE MARTIN ...

The author is ossie Davis. The boy who is the main character is named stone. He is a African American who is trying to be non violent like Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. the story took place in the late 60's. it took place in the south. In the beginning of the story a boy named Stone he wants to go to a trip with his church class to Washington dc. He could not go because his dad Ike stone did not believe in nonviolence. Stone did not get to go to washing ton so he watched the march on Washington on television. After the march on Washington things did not get much better you should read Just Like martin and find out all that happens. I liked this book because it had real events and important people to the black culture

What do you get when you take out the d, I, s, c, r, I, m, I, n and put in an H before the a? You get hate! Have you e ver been discriminated before? I think everyone has been in some way. African Americans have tried their best to stop it. They seldom did anything and they were just beaten to death from people like the K.K.K.'s. People like Martin Luther King Jr. who tried to stand up for what they had believed in. I learned in the book, a reverend of the local church has been organizing a peace march with server al other church organizations, and they had members from their church ridge private busses to Washington to march. They wanted the white people to know that there was no reason for them to be treated like this. One of the fathers in the story went to war with the reverend to defend The United States of America. They were at war with Korea. Since the war, the father has been very disturbed. He now carries a gun in his glove compartment of his pick-up truck. IN December when Dr. King held a service he had asked that the people in the service sing a "Negro Spiritual" ...
I though the book was great. It gave me a taste of what it was like to live back then if I were black. IT made me really think if I were black, would I want someone to do things like hang me, throw rocks at me, shoot high pressured water at me? I though for a while, why is different bad, but I sti9ll don't understand why because people of all different races, shapes, sizes are discriminated all the time. ...

Just Like Martin, I found at a bookstore when I was traveling in
Maryland. Not thinking I was down to my last few dollars I bought it. I was very disapointed until I started reading it. This book taught me to never give up and know I keep on reading it over and over. 2 big thumbs up!!!

In the book Just Like Martin there is a boy named Stone who is really trying to spread non-violence across the nation. There is a huge event where all black people come together and march. Martin Luther King was a leader in the march. He said his "I Have A Dream" speech.
Some bad things started to happen at the end of the book. It might change the meaning of discrimination forever. Read this good book to find out.
I really liked this book. It was exciting and it shows you that if you really work toward something that it might actually come true.
