                Book Description

Our knowledge of the environment of the nucleus of our galaxy has been greatly enhanced, by more extensive and sensitive observations at radio and infrared wavelengths, the advent of high resolution x-ray imaging and spectroscopy, and considerable theoretical activity to understand the nucleus and its components, and their activity.
The Galactic Center Workshop 2002 was organized to review recent research on the galactic center, including the latest state-of-the-art observations and important theoretical developments. The workshop covered phenomena on scales ranging from the central several hundred parsecs to the central parsec and within. Each topic was approached from both multi-wavelength observational and theoretical perspectives.

                  Book Description

“See, there she is!” cried one visitor to the Centennial Exposition. “Just think! She killed all them animals,” echoed another. “There, that’s her!” All during the hot Philadelphia summer of 1876, throngs of people pushed and shoved their way into the Kansas-Colorado Building, eager to catch a glimpse of the small, dark-haired woman responsible for creating the extraordinary display of bears, deer, and other mammals cavorting over a Rocky Mountain landscape. Curious, skeptical, friendly—on and on they came, until the policemen stationed at the doors were hard-pressed to maintain control. The fairgoers were intent on seeing for themselves the “modern Diana” who had come all the way from the wilds of Colorado.

Maxine Benson’s finely crafted biography of Martha Maxwell illuminates the little-known but important career of a remarkable woman. Naturalist, taxidermist, museologist, artist—Maxwell pioneered in a number of fields new for women. Born in Pennsylvania in 1831 and educated in the Midwest, she traveled to the gold fields of Colorado with her husband in 1860.

A chance encounter with a German taxidermist determined her lifework, and Maxwell soon devoted her boundless energy to hunting and mounting all forms of Rocky Mountain wildlife, which she displayed in unusual habitat settings in her museum in Boulder and later in Denver. Her spreading fame led to an invitation to exhibit her collection at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, where she achieved international renown.

As Maxwell’s major scientific and artistic contributions to natural history taxidermy and display were recognized, her influence carried to the Smithsonian Institution. Separated from her husband and alienated from her daughter, however, she became increasingly unhappy as her professional accomplishments grew. Her tragic and lonely death in 1881 revealed something of the price she paid for daring to be different.

Like that of other accomplished women of her era, Maxwell’s fame did not keep pace with the significant influence she had on her profession. Thanks to Maxine Benson, Martha Maxwell now takes her rightful place in the history of the West and of the nation.

                  4 out of 5 stars Many Drills.......2007-08-23

I use many of these drills for my Freshman and JV teams. A lot of them are too complicated for this level but would proabably be good for advanced club teams, varsity and college. This is a good resource for coaches at all levels.

4 out of 5 stars Drills, drills, and more drills.......2001-07-13

Coach Martin is a hoot. I had the pleasure of sitting in a session in a coaches seminar where she was one of the featured speakers. She is energetic, smart, entertaining and knows a whole lot about volleyball. She is the head women's coach at Central Missouri Stat U and has been there since forever.

The problem is that it is really difficult to translate all that she embodies into a book. Don't get me wrong, the drills are awesome and they are presented nicely, but that is what you would expect from a drill book. But, the sense of fun, the way she conveys the knowledge, that is kind of lost in the translation. The main thing I like about this is that the skill level progresses with each drill. So if you are dying for some new drills, here is a bunch, but make sure that they suit your needs. Another good point is that these drills are easily adaptable, so it is easy for coaches to change them to fit their own needs.

I just wish they could package Coach Martin's dynamic personality and enthousiasm into a book. Oh well....

4 out of 5 stars You can never have enough drills!.......2000-11-02

Peggy Martin's book has been a valuable addition to my arsenal of drills, because I believe a coach can never have access to too many drills. It's important for players to get a feel for a skill by attacking it in a number of different ways, and using several drills in sequence allows players to continue working on the skill without getting bored, which is important to the learning process.

Adding Peggy Martin's "101 Volleyball Drills" to my library has helped keep my high school players on task without putting their minds to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must for ADD'ers!!.......2007-09-02

I purchased this book in about 1991. Due to my constant struggles with undiagnosed ADD, I didn't actually read it until about 4 years ago. In fact, up until that time I had read maybe 10-12 books in my entire life. Despite everything I tried, I couldn't stay focused on most books longer than about 3 minutes. (Yes, that explains why I failed so many classes in high school for not completing reading assignments, book reports, reading the instructions, etc., etc.)

I browsed through the first few chapters, probably ignoring most of it. But I kept at it even after having to re-read entire pages where my mind had wandered. After several hours, I finally made it through the initial reading speed test. I still have the paper that says I read 250 words a minute and I figured I had about 15% retention (basically nothing, like normal - and that is only if my mind didn't completely wander off). Using the simple subsonic reading techniques described in this book I was immediately able to get just over 600 words per minute with an amazing retention of, well... everything! I was stunned! My wife quizzed me about the sample chapter I read and I answered everything correctly. I was simply amazed!

I found the simple techniques for subsonic reading superb and worth ten times the amount the book cost me. As for the rest of the topics in the book, such as student priorities, scheduling, essay writing; I really didn't care about because I wasn't a student. However, the introduction to mind-mapping was good and provided an excellent jump-off point for learning more.

But, I would like to comment about those people who are looking for a book to try to achieve the "super-sonic" reading speeds or whatever it's called these days. Those people should probably just accept that if anyone can actually do that it is because they had at least 95% of the talent/ability before a book or program helped them discover it and not because of any magic technique.

By the way, I have read well over 100 books since reading Remember Everything You Read, both fiction and non-fiction books. My current reading speed is a comfortable pace of about 800-900 words per minute. But, even still, the absolute best part about having read this book is that I remember what I read! And, that has truly changed my life.

I didn't really like this book because it made you feel like you had to read really fast on everything! Not true!

                    5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2007-06-14

Amazon.com is the only place I could find this book! Go figure! It has helped me learn to read faster, and so to get through my university classes faster and easier. Why isn't it on the all-time best-seller list?

5 out of 5 stars Remember Everything You Read.......2007-03-09

I purchased this as a gift for a 72 year old friend that was having trouble reading. He has said this has helped his memory and the speed of his reading is ten fold from waht is was.

2 out of 5 stars Alot of work.......2006-06-18

it is probably true that if you do what it says in the book you will probably have a small increase in speed but you would have to do the silly exercizes every day for a long time to see any increase. the exercezes are like this: read 2-3 pages and time your self, then read those same pages in half that time, then in 1/4 that time. another excersize is: read for 2 minutes, then starting from where you left off read for 2 more minutes, but pass through twice as many pages... and repeat... basically it is a way to trick yourself into reading a little bit faster, but I think that most of the benifit that I got was because the book told me about twenty times that I was reading faster. I will admit that I didn't stick with the program for very long, but I think that if you want to read fast the best solution is to read alot, and probably having a good night's sleep will help you more than this book will. However, I will admit that I didn't stick with the program very long, so it is possible that it works for you, but for someone that doesn't want to spend the time to find out... I'll just assume that My origional idea was right.

A really good part about the book is that it does a good job of motivating you to educate yourself, and to work on your own intellegence. Something that I need to do alot.

                        Book Description

In my mind, the only rival to a good newspaper was a train headed out of Wisconsin.

Katherine Lunden has always dreamed of living a life like the ones she reads about in the newspapers, far away from the woods of Wisconsin and the small-town ways she's grown to despise. When a chance finally comes in the form of a train bound for Chicago and an abandoned suitcase marked with the name "Edith Shay," Katherine leaps into the unknown. Armed with a borrowed name and her own fierce courage, she's determined to conquer the big city on her own.

But Katherine soon finds that her new life doesn't exactly match up to her dreams -- working for a living is harder than she expected, and making friends in a city of strangers seems impossible. How can she discover herself while she's pretending to be someone else?

                        5 out of 5 stars A terrific character in a good book!.......2003-01-01

Edith Shay (or is that Katherine Lunden?) is an intriguing book. This young woman in the post-Civil War era leaves her confining Wisconsin farm home and journeys by herself to Chicago, a town she couldn't even imagine. The book realistically portrays how difficult it would have been for a lone woman (young girl, really) to find her way around the country, find a safe place to stay without any money (she has none to begin with and is robbed later on), and find a job without any skills or recommendations. Katherine is a winning character, with old-fashioned sensibilities that transfer well to the modern day. And, while this is a slower-paced book, take the time to savor the details of the era (A. LaFaye has a tremendous knowledge of history) and the friendships Katherine makes on her journey. I sure hope there's another Edith book forthcoming. I want to know what happened to her next!!!

2 out of 5 stars Edith Shay Student Review.......2001-02-14

Edith Shay was a wonderful book. It contains an accurate description of the technology and clothing that were common for the era. Chicago, Wasington, and Richmond are well portrayed. Ms. LaFaye wove this captivating story which easily grasps the reader. However, the story and plot dragged and was not grade level reading for an eigth grader but is great for fifth and sixth graders.

5 out of 5 stars The story of a self-reliant, strong girl in the 1860s........1998-09-24

Sixteen year old Katherine wants to get away from her boring home in the Wisconsin woods. So she buys a ticket and hops onto a train to Chicago, anticipating an adventure. What she finds is a crowded city of strangers, homesickness, and the shock of having to fend for herself. Katherine is on her own now, with only the phantom owner of an abandoned suitcase labled "Edith Shay" that Katherine found in a Michigan train station. Will Katherine pursue her dreams or turn back in faliure? Read this great book to find out!
