Book Description

Focusing on the many advances that are made possible by simulation, this book describes the new generation of discrete choice methods. Researchers use these statistical methods to examine the choices that consumers, households, firms, and other agents make. Each of the major models is covered: logit, generalized extreme value, or GEV (including nested and cross-nested logits), probit, and mixed logit, plus a variety of specifications that build on these basics. The procedures are applicable in many fields, including energy, transportation, environmental studies, health, labor, and marketing.

Simulation-assisted estimation procedures are investigated and compared, including maximum simulated likelihood, method of simulated moments, and method of simulated scores. Procedures for drawing from densities are described, including variance reduction techniques such as anithetics and Halton draws. Recent advances in Bayesian procedures are explored, including the use of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and its variant Gibbs sampling. No other book incorporates all these fields, which have arisen in the past 20 years. The procedures are applicable in many fields, including energy, transportation, environmental studies, health, labor, and marketing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and thorough book.......2006-03-08

This book is one of the best for introduction to Discrete choice models. I had been using Ben-Akiva & Lerman, but feel this book should be read along with that one for a better understanding of choice models. Also, Train covers recent advances in the field and provides a good introduction to Halton draws. He really makes sure you get the concepts and the online lecture series are really excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best of its kind. Good for MS students and up .......2005-04-24

-Enjoyable read
-Does not assume PhD level of econometrics
-Explanations are clear and concise

Actually, an advanced undergrad may find this book usefull as well.
Is this the best discrete choice methods book ever published?
Let y = 1 or 0 where 1 = yes, this is the best and 0 = No, the book is not the best. Also let P = Prob (y=1). My results show P = 0.98 (see forthcoming Econometrica article).
While finishing a Master's Thesis in applied econ which focuses on a multinomial logit model, I have sought good info on this topic. Not having gone through the rigors of a PhD program, I have gone through many of the important books and articles which address discrete choice modeling methods some of which address a post-doc audience only. Dr. Train's is by far the best I have encountered. His explanations are concise yet not too dense (see Amemiya). I first encountered many of the concepts in other publications but did understand them until reading Train's book. In my opinion Train has that rare quality of being, not only an exceptional economist, but quite enjoyable to read.

5 out of 5 stars excellent discussion of what the models mean.......2005-03-17

If I could give this book six stars I would. It's simply one of the best statistics books I've ever read.

This book is very well-written by one of the experts in the field. It covers logit models and the various generalizations (GEV, mixed logit, probit, etc.) in detail, along with a thorough discussion of modern estimation of these models. What I find most useful about it is that the words-to-equations density is highly favorable. The equations you need are there, but the words you need are there too, making sure you understand the model assumptions inside and out. Each equation is explained thoroughly and the surrounding discussion probes the model to bring the reader to a critical understanding of what exactly is implied by the model. Too often complex statistical models are treated in a "black box" fashion. The dirty little secret is that it's easier for the author to do this. Train doesn't take the easy way out. The fact that his web site has truly excellent support--including a large number of webinars in addition to the more usual papers, software, etc.--makes this book a doubly valuable item. See http://elsa.berkeley.edu/~train/distant.html for even more.

        Book Description

Modern Land Drainage is a fully renewed and extended edition of Land Drainage: Planning and Design of Agricultural Drainage systems, which was first published in 1983 (Batsford, London). The book is based on traditional drainage methods for rain-fed agriculture in the humid temperature zone. Significant parts are devoted to drainage for salinity control of irrigated land in (semi-) arid zones, and to drainage of rice land in the humid tropics. Institutional, management and maintenance aspects are extensively covered, as well as the mitigation of adverse impacts of drainage interventions on the environment. Moreover, various applications for drainage, design and management are treated.

                Book Description

Jack Temple Kirby charts the history of the low country between the James River in Virginia and Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. The Algonquian word for this country, which means 'swamp-on-a-hill,' was transliterated as 'poquosin' by seventeenth-century English settlers. Interweaving social, political, economic, and military history with the story of the landscape, Kirby shows how Native American, African, and European peoples have adapted to and modified this Tidewater area in the nearly four hundred years since the arrival of Europeans.

Kirby argues that European settlement created a lasting division of the region into two distinct zones often in conflict with each other: the cosmopolitan coastal area, open to markets, wealth, and power because of its proximity to navigable rivers and sounds, and a more isolated hinterland, whose people and their way of life were gradually—and grudgingly—subjugated by railroads, canals, and war. Kirby's wide-ranging analysis of the evolving interaction between humans and the landscape offers a unique perspective on familiar historical subjects, including slavery, Nat Turner's rebellion, the Civil War, agricultural modernization, and urbanization.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Out back of beyond.......2007-02-25

I lived on the edge of the poquosin country for a decade, and it seemed so wild, so untouched, so empty that it couldn't have had a history. But of course it did, and Professor Jack Temple Kirby has written it in his expected elegant style.

A poquosin is a slightly higher and drier patch in the soggy coastal plain of the American South, with its center in the Great Dismal Swamp of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. It might have been logical that with an entire rich continent to expand into, the early white settlers would have passed by this unhealthy and difficult country. But that is not how people behave.

Kirby divides the people into the cosmopolitans and the inhabitants, or as he calls them, the hinterlanders.

The cosmopolitans lived on the fringes of the swamp, were educated and had capital and skills. They wished to employ these close to home. They financed canals, roads and railroads and hired the inhabitants or paid for the resources they could gather, primarily shingles, but also furs, turpentine, fish.

The hinterlanders were marginal characters, especially the black slaves, getting by on canal digging, trapping, fishing, logging, turpentining and farming. Yet, ironically, they were also independent. For the slaves, especially, working on their own, away from their owners, being a "swamper" was a kind of freedom.

Kirby also interprets these men and women as more or less conscious rejecters of consumer society. "Free workers used their wages to resist modernity."

I don't think this is the correct reading. They consumed avidly when they had the money, which was seldom. That they did not abandon their hard, sickly life was probably because it is easier to be a poor man in the country than in the city. For a long time, cities had not much to offer the debilitated, illiterate, unskilled poquosin-man.

Once that changed, the people escaped. For the blacks, with lower material expectations, this happened around 1916. Whites, slightly more demanding, did not flee until 1940. (See my review of Linda Flowers' "Throwed Away: Failures of Progress in Eastern North Carolina.")

Left behind were the helpless and feckless. Kirby has not much to say about them, except to lament the "tragedy of a people unable to sustain themselves harmoniously on a rural landscape." Well, as Peter Huber wrote in "Hard Green" (see my review), the peasant squatting over a cow-dung fire is not green, he's just poor. The people of the area did sustain themselves harmoniously, they were just desperately poor.

It isn't in Kirby's book, but in 1966, Sen. Bill Spong of Virginia made a hunger tour of the area and found whole communities -- almost all black women and children, the men were gone -- that sustained themselves on an annual two-months' worth of low-paid labor in vegetable canneries, plus whatever they could scratch out of their gardens. They were hungry, but they had not rejected modernity. Modernity had rejected them.

As in Kirby's book "Mockingbird Song" (see my review), which is an expansion geographically of the themes in "Poquosin," the author weaves his human story with ecological history. Trees, or the disappearance of them, dominate ecological writing about the South. For Donald Edward Davis, writing about the southern Appalachians in "Where There Are Mountains," the missing tree is the American chestnut. For Kirby, it is the longleaf pine -- always described as tall and stately.

The piney woods are still piney, but today the trees are slash pines. Hogs and turpentining almost extinguished the longleaf. Kirby understates the violence of the turpentine camps, being more concerned about the trees. They were more brutal but less picturesque than Hollywood's idea of Dodge City, and there was no tradition, not even a mythical one, of freelance agents of justice who cleaned up the camps.

Kirby arguably also understates the impact of diseases in preserving the premodern life of the poquosins. Robert Desowitz, in "Who Gave Pinta to the Santa Maria?" has a good summary of how malaria, hookworm, yellow fever and other diseases beat down the Southerner, white or black.

I am not particularly sympathetic to the yearnings of writers like Kirby or Flowers or Davis for the old rural South. I lived in it, and the modern South is nicer. But Kirby's books about the South are stimulating, valuable, engaging. The real history of the South was much different from the opposing, highly politicized versions its young people more commonly are exposed to today. They should all get a good dose of Kirby.

Our ability to describe drainage systems has improved with the continued evolution of drainage theory and with the improvement of simulation models that project the performance of drainage systems, including effects of design on yields and profits. This monograph is also a guide to formulating water management policies while considering the interrelations between drainage and other natural components, such as wetlands, wildlife, streams, flood plains, nutrient management, and hypoxia.

                        Book Description

From the best-selling author of Remarkable Trees of the World, a celebration of the most extraordinary tree of them all.

Standing tall on the sunburned plains of Africa and Australia, baobabs may be the oldest life forms on the planet. Many of the specimens still standing today have been around for well over two thousand years. Tremendous in size and bizarre in appearance, they have provided food, medicine, and places of refuge and worship to countless peoples, even serving as prisons and tombs on occasion. Long before European explorers opened up the African continent, the news of these "gnarled upside-down giants" had astonished the world of science and stoked the imagination of naturalists everywhere. Thomas Pakenham chronicles his personal encounters with the baobabs of Africa, Australia, Madagascar, and America and shares the countless superstitions and myths, as well as the often-strange history, that surround these enigmatic trees. With 60 color photos and 144 pages with color throughout, The Remarkable Baobab will be a great, and reasonably priced, gift book for the Christmas season.

5 out of 5 stars a must have for every Baobab lover.......2007-04-17

If you're a succulent collector and want to find information about raising these trees, this book is not for you. But if you like seeing great pictures and information how the native people live with them and use them for food, water and shelter it has everything you're asking for.

5 out of 5 stars Lively and wonderful celebratory descriptions and photos.......2005-06-10

The Remarkable Baobab deserves no singular audience mind: it will attract attention from naturalists, armchair travel readers, botanists, and adventure readers alike. Thomas Pakenham followed in the footsteps of an 18th century French naturalist who first brought baobabs to the attention of Westerners: his travels took him to the heart of Africa, to Australia's outback, and even to Hawaii and Miami as he traces the qualities and persistence of these ancient trees. Pakenham's purpose is to convey a sense of wonder and discovery, not to provide a technical scientist's botanical reference: in this purpose he succeeds, with lively and wonderful celebratory descriptions and photos alike.

4 out of 5 stars Thomas Pakenham, The Remarkable Baobab (2004).......2005-05-25

In his introduction, Pakenham notes, "[h]ere's a book bursting with ripe baobabs .... It's a personal book like its predecessors. I have scoured the world for baobabs with shapely limbs and unusual characters" (at p. 8). Here's the reality. Of the eight species of baobab, Pakenham has only seen five (missing three in Madagascar because "one of my family was ill and I was on borrowed time" (at p. 30; see also p. 8). That trip was made back in 2001, suggesting that Pakenham may have a different concept of "scouring" than the rest of us. Nor are any pictures of the three missing species offered, although a large number of the photographs in this book come from Corbis (see p. 142), with one illustrating a baobab in the Comoros (at pp. [122]-[23]), an archipelago that Pakenham does not appear to have visited, while another picture prominently features a non-baobab (at pp. [122]-[23]). This volume appears to be an offshoot of the author's Remarkable Trees of the World (2002), although there is evidence that Pakenham has incorporated materials from recent trips to St. Croix (see p. 127) and South Africa (see pp. 14, 97, 134). Why did he not return to Madagascar when this meant leaving almost 40% of the world's baobab species uncovered?

The photographs of baobabs included in the book will mesmerize most readers; the trees are worthy subjects, and between his own photos, Corbis, Kew, and his British publisher, Pakenham has put together a wonderful collection of pictures. Those of us who have seen baobabs - my own first experience was in the Mozambique bush - find them unforgettable, and this excitement has been conveyed to potential readers. Fewer, though, will find all of Pakenham's chatty comments attractive. His description of his companion at Leydsdorp (apparently his wife- see the photograph at p. 94) as a "slip of a girl" (at p. 97), for example, seems a bit too much.

The author does, however, have the gift of a light touch, and is able to convey a mass of information about the trees to his readers. Several facts were new and interesting to me although I researched the topic over a quarter of as century ago at Yale. These included the pods' appearance in Cairo markets in the 16th century (at p.13) and the 15th and 16th century graffiti found by Adanson on baobabs in Senegal in the 1750's (at p. 55). Herbert Basedow, who investigated a baobab in Australia in 1916, found bleached bones and a skull with a bullet hole (at p. 117), but Pakenham has no reference to the explorer in his bibliography (at p. 137; the information may come from Pat Lowe's The Boab Tree (1998), which is listed). Equally interesting is the probable importation of the tree to the Caribbean by black slaves (see pp. 127-28) and the legend that a hollow in the tree, opening at the full moon, would lead children back to Africa (at p. 131). The "upside-down" nature of the tree is explained in several stories (see p. 14)- a version not given by Pakenham states that the Creator replanted the tree in disgust, with its roots sticking out, after it had complained several times about its surroundings and had been duly replanted. The author does a good job of describing both the baobab's utility to native cultures and the uses to which it has been put by colonists. Not only can one pound a nail into the trunk without a hammer (see p. 13), but I can personally testify that a sharp twig can pierce the trunk. It is unfortunate that the distribution of species given (at p. 139) is not accompanied by a map.

In sum, The Remarkable Baobab is a flawed, but ultimately fascinating, discussion of one of the world's arboreal wonders. One can but hope that other works will appear which deal more thoroughly with this genus.

This book will make a really splendid gift to anyone who loves trees. A well-printed book with really lovely pictures, it presents some of the most famous trees belonging to the genus /Adansonia/, focusing on trees as "trunks with branches". The text is well-written, and makes for a light read. Noticeable weak points are that the author's wife is in quite a few photographs although she does not take a particular good picture and that the author adopts /Adansonia_gibbosa/ as the name of the Australian baobab, instead of the better known (and now protected) /Adansonia_gregorii/ (without even explaining why he does this).

2 out of 5 stars Nice photos - but NOT The Best Dive Sites of the World........2001-07-30

There are a number of books currently available claiming to show the "top" or "best" dive sites of the world and one gets the impression that this publisher has thrown together whatever was available from the 6 contributors in order to add something on a similar theme. Sadly, if this is the best they can deliver with such an all-encompassing title, they simply should not have bothered.

Of course, any personal selection claiming "the best of" will always be subjective. My list will be different from yours and neither of us is either right or wrong - it is simply a matter of personal choice coupled with our personal diving experiences. That said, the title of this book really is making a very big claim and not for the first time with this particular parent publisher, the content of the book fails to live up to the promise of that title.

The Best Dive Sites of the World is a hard-back coffee table book slightly larger than the well-established format we expect to see from this publisher. 50 dive-sites have been chosen from the Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Each section commences with an introduction and each specific dive site with an artistic impression of the entire site followed by a written description supported by page after page of excellent photography. Sadly, however, the overall standard of artwork has seriously declined since they were first seen and some images look as though they might have been drawn by schoolchildren.

Otherwise, there is no doubt that this is a very beautiful book containing some really stunning photography. When it comes to the "Best" Dive Sites of the World, however, this is not a book to make you reach for the telephone and call your travel operator - because they are simply not here.

The book commences with a General Introduction which likens the earth to a tennis ball filled with water - with the ball being the land and the water being the sea. Yes, I know, I am also still trying to work that one out. This is then followed by page after page of close ups and wide-angle shots of reefs, many different species of fish, plenty of Soft Corals, Gorgonians - and yet more Soft Corals and yet more Gorgonians - and then there are even more Soft Corals and... You get the idea.

I would have thought that at least one shipwreck - even if it had to be the Thistlegorm, would have been included in any divers selection of best dive sites - but not in this book. Not one. Furthermore, not only are some of the world's outstanding reefs missing from this book, countries such as Fiji and Hawaii are excluded altogether and Malta does not even appear on their own map of the Mediterranean.

In conclusion, therefore, a change of title is much needed - something like "Good Dive Sites for Gorgonians and Soft Corals" or even "Good Sites for Colour Photography (Underwater - Still Life)" would have scored better for being an honest title. What I cannot accept is the inference that for any dive site - anywhere in the world, to qualify as one of the "Best," that site must have an abundance of Gorgonians and Corals - especially colourful Soft Corals, which is clearly the criteria for this book. Readers can only study so many photographs with a very similar theme before boredom sets in.

Two stars retained for the photography and overall presentation of the product, 3 stars lost for artwork, repetition and misleading title.

For divers, photographers, and anyone fascinated by the hidden wonders of the seas, this magnificently illustrated book traverses the globe, focusing on 75 worldclass dive sites. Whether you want to witness the pearly nautilus's nocturnal migrations in the waters of Micronesia, wind through the eerie Turtle Cavern in Malaysia, or undertake the ticklish planning of a great white shark expedition in Dangerous Reef off southern Australia, this beautiful, indispensable guide offers all the details, directions, and tips for the ideal diving experience.

Over 300 superb color photographs reveal the stunning beauty of these sites both above and below water, from the forests of giant kelp off Catalina Island to the endless tropical vistas from a Philippine beach. Practical information for each dive site includes tips on getting there, best time to go, quality of marine life, and statistics on climate, visibility, water temperature, and depth.

These 75 locations range from remote unspoiled offshore reefs accessible from live-aboard cruisers to well-frequented sites where the diving is based at popular resorts. For divers motivated by marine wildlife, shipwrecks, simple recreation, or the exhilaration of danger, here are destinations all over the world. For armchair explorers, this is a diver's-eye view of the most exciting underwater sites around the globe.

Diving: The World's Best SitesI gave this to my husband for a Christmas gift. He loved it. I don't dive but he loves it. He just got certified last year and this book gives him a lot of ideas on where to go for good diving. This book is only useful to someone who dives. Not for a vacation guide.

My daughter struggles with getting a good grip on her writing insturments which results in sloppy letters. The suggestions in this book/text have helped to strengthen her hands. Her letters are becoming much clearer. I highly recommend this program.

This is a great program, but I really did not need this guide. It is pretty self explanatory. Or you can use the website. It is helpful if you are a teacher.

This is the method used in my son's school and in most ESE classes. If you have a child with fine motor difficulties...use this. If you have a child with writing difficulties...use this. If you have a child with ASD, as I do... this works!!!

The posters below me (Gladstone and Barchowsky) would probably prefer you use their methods -- one of which I own. However as mom who writes using Spencerian and even Barchowsky's Italic, I have a child who had writing difficulty. But my 6 yo Asperger's son grasped onto the HWOT program and ran with it. He understood its' simplicity and more than anything....ENJOYED IT. It "clicked" with him. Can he write in full sentences now at 6? Yes. Can he write legibly? Yes. Can he write quickly? Yes!!!
I have also used it with my non-ASD 3 yo who is now writing upper and lowercase with it now as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great for learning disabled.......2003-04-30

My daughter is dyslexic and this is a great tool for her. Even my three year old likes to play with the wood pieces. The program is great for home schoolers. It is easily taught.

An excellent first tool for little hands who have not a clue as to how to form letters. This systematic program guides kinesthetic memory for correct motor production of the letters of the alaphabet. A must for all Pre-school, kindergarten and first grade teachers. Especially designed to give aide to children with poor motor coordination. Good habits are formed in a fun writing format. I hightly recommend it!
