An Excerpt: Breeding Ignorance, Breeding Hatred

In 1994, during one of the worst, but certainly not unprecedented, systematic attacks on immigrants to the United States, immigrants and their allies began sporting T-shirts bearing the face of an indigenous man and the slogan, "Who are you calling illegal, Pilgrim?" reflecting indignation at the ignorant and malicious anti-immigrant sentiments of the day. Specifically, this was in direct response to a campaign that had been brewing for years in policy circles and "citizen" groups, culminating in California state's Proposition 187. The initiative proposed to bar undocumented children from public schools and turn away undocumented students from state colleges and universities. It also proposed to deny the undocumented an array of public benefits and social services, including prenatal and preventive care such as immunizations.

While the overt purpose of this voter initiative was to curtail immigration, ostensibly by restricting the use of public benefits and social services by undocumented immigrants, the real agenda behind it was to criminalize immigrants for presumably entering the country "illegally" and stealing resources from "true" United States citizens. More to the point, Proposition 187 came out of and was aimed at perpetuating the myth that all immigrants are "illegal" at worst and, at best, the cause of our society's and economy's ills.

Throughout US history, immigration has been viewed and intentionally constructed as plague, infection or infestation and immigrants as disease (social and physical), varmints or invaders. If we look at contemporary popular films, few themes seem to tap the fears or thrill the American imagination more than that of the timeless space alien invading the United States, and statespeople have snatched up this popular image to rouse public support for

2 out of 5 stars Angry and Biased.......2006-11-01

Chang does nothing but rave angrily, sometimes supplementing her rage with biased studies and liberal "logic." She finds fault in the United States in every way possible and holds no one else accountable for the situation immigrant women are in.

The book is poorly written and is hardly debatable as the amount of left-wing propoganda is insurmountable.

5 out of 5 stars A terse, important book.......2003-01-26

If only every person in public office today could read this book, and take it to heart... The authors waste no words arguing about an unseen traffic in women's labor that barely sustains them, and their families.

5 out of 5 stars Highlights the unrewarded work immigrant women perform.......2001-02-24

In Disposable Domestics: Immigrant Women Workers In The Global Economy, writer and activist Grace Chang persuasively counters arguments in favor of curbing immigration and eliminating access to education, health care, and welfare as she exposes the racism and misogyny directed against female immigrant workers in American society. Chang also highlights the unrewarded work immigrant women perform as caregivers, cleaners, and servers, showing how these women are actively resisting the exploitation they face. Disposable Domestics is highly informative, recommended reading for feminists, unionists, immigration policy makers, and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in immigration issues, economics, women's rights, and fair labor practices.

Book Description

As international economic change accelerates and globalization becomes inevitable, Christians and others have questioned the equity and justice of the emerging global economy. Are there any fair and viable alternatives to global capitalism?

University of Chicago theologian Kathryn Tanner offers here a serious and creative proposal for evaluating economic theory and behavior. She finds in the Christian story a strong and unyielding concern with economic matters and specific principles of economics and economic justice that can be brought into conversation with global capitalism today. At the heart of that story is the reality of God's gift of grace, a noncompetitive relationship that models a very different type of economy. Further, Tanner discusses specific alternatives to the present economic system and principles that can apply across comparative economies. Finally, she offers concrete proposals for a theological economy and ways to make it work to modify and perhaps replace the present global capitalist configuration.

Few matters today are as pressing and consequential as the global economic direction, and Tanner's proposal offers a way for Christians to consider their role in crafting or reworking the myriad economic ways in which we all relate to each other.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Theological Economy.......2005-09-16

Tanner develops the idea of a theological economy that is centered around the concept of gift. She begins by finding fault with other theological treatments of economics and suggesting that money and grace are formaly related. She notes also that the attainment of goods is not a zero-sum proposition. She then suggests that a theological economy of gift should include the concepts of unconditional giving, universal giving, and non-competition within the community. This stands in contrast with critiques of capitalism offered by a reading of Locke or gift-exchange theorists. Finally, Tanner suggests practical ways that a theological economy can change the global capitalist economy.

With thorough arguments, Tanner presents an excellent alternative to the current system. Not only that, but she gives concrete steps to make this system relevant. This book should be required reading for those interested in Christian theology and economics.

The author focuses on smallholder tea production with the aim of pinpointing the factors that influence the adoption of tea among male and female farmers, assessing female farmers’ perceptions of the changes in living standards over the research period, and suggesting appropriate policy reforms to ensure that women’s interests are taken into account in the design of agricultural reforms.

            Book Description

Before the late 1960s, Japan historians characterized the Early Modern Japanese economy in waht are typical feudal terms. Considered backward and stagnant, it was argued that the economy eventually collapsed under the weight of its own internal limitations. This narrative has given way in the past two decades to a new interpretation in which Japan's pre-industrial economy is protrayed as one of substantive growth and qualitative change, the setting stage for modern development during the Meiji era.

After some 20 years as a highly respected aerobic fitness instructor and health promoter--one who rarely uses the phrase "lose weight"--Kathy Smith is shifting her priorities. "I would never want to choose, but if I could only do one form of training from now on, I'd give up cardio and focus on weight training." A strong statement, indeed! The title of this, her fourth book, suggests Smith's goal is to help exercisers lose weight. But as readers work through the engrossing chapters on physiology, exercise basics, and making the shift from aerobics to weight lifting, Smith says they'll note that weight loss is simply a pleasant by-product of the true benefits generated by this straightforward, nonthreatening weight-lifting program.

Smith believes in the power of consistent, progressive exercise with free weights and weight-lifting machines to counteract the muscle loss and slower metabolism that naturally come with age and typically cause the pounds to pile on. Her 12-week "mini commitment" eases newcomers into a comprehensive program of weight lifting and sensible eating, and includes weekly checklists for tracking workouts and meals. Large photos accompany clearly written descriptions of more than 60 stretches and exercises, nicely organized by muscle group (chest, back, abdominals, and so on). Just pick a gym or a room at home, and Smith will provide the routine. Advocates of her popular fitness videos (more than two dozen to date) will appreciate Smith's natural warmth, encouragement, and intelligence throughout this motivational book. --Liane Thomas

I found this book to be very helpful! I loved it. I have been exercising for many years using at home videos. I actually like this book more then some of the Kathy Smith Videos I have used! I wanted to get more involved with working out with weights now that I am in my 40's. The book covers the benefits of working out with weights, nutrition and covers lots of different exercises for each muscle group.(proper form is covered and explained in detail) for the entire body along with a suggested schedule or routine for each week. I have been very happy with the routines and do them entirely at home and have seen great results.

I had weight trained several years ago with good results but a bad fall down a flight of stairs led me in a different direction and I after gaining weight and loosing muscle I need to start again. This was an excellent fresh start for me. I saw results in just a few weeks and feel stronger and healthier and have now moved on to more serious weight training once again.
Kathy's book is very easy to follow and had very clear direction. Her training advice is sound and her guide to technique was excellent. Her eating plan is sensible and easy to follow and I found no problem working it into my day to day lifestyle. The amount of time spend training each week is very reasonable.

A great book for beginners or people who want a FRESH START
Also a very reasonably priced book.

Prior to reading this book, I only used weights if they were part of an aerobics class. Now I have the confidence to walk into a weight room at a gym! Kathy teaches readers how to use weights both at home and in the gym setting. The how-to photos are very helpful. I also enjoyed the chapter on diet and was impressed by the fact that Kathy consulted with a Registered Dietitian for guidance on the nutrition chapter. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to incorporate strength training into their fitness routine.

I've been lifting weights for a little over a year, so have already experienced many of the benefits Kathy mentions in her book. I've lost 40 pounds and about 18% body fat by following a good diet and weight training at progressively heavier weight and added sets. Even though I am not brand new to weight training, I still found the book helpful. There is an anatomy chart, and Kathy dispels many myths about weight lifting, in particular that women shouldn't lift heavy or that they will get big and bulky from lifting. Also, there were a couple of exercises that I was not doing, so I was able to modify my current program a bit.

I tried using a trainer, but frankly have been disappointed, so I am now learning all I can on my own. Lift Weights to Lose Weight will be a book that I use. I like it much better than the accompanying video tape, which I have used briefly; it is not a very comprehensive workout.

I recommend this book to beginners and intermediates, and anyone who wants to learn more about the basic principles of weight lifting.

The first steps in storytelling are often easy, because we tell stories informally every day. Once you take storytelling into the more formal contexts of performance or occupational uses, however, you may be faced with challenges you hadn't anticipated. You need information that goes beyond the basics. And you need it in a form that does not just tell you what to do but helps you make your own informed decisions.

Successful use of stories is an important, and often under-rated, aspect of public speaking, particularly in the workplace. It is also critical to developing well-received speeches in Toastmasters clubs.

This book provides a wealth of valuable insights on developing engaging stories that will carry your message.

5 out of 5 stars How to tell stories which have "dynamic balance".......2005-09-13

Frankly, I was unaware of Lipman until I read his Foreword to Annette Simmons' The Story Factor. Favorably impressed, I then read Improving Your Storytelling which was first published in 1999. Of course, people have been telling stories for thousands of years. My own list of history's greatest storytellers includes Homer, Plato, Aesop, Jesus, the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), Joel Chandler Harris, L. Frank Baum, and E.B. White. All of the great storytellers are guided and informed by the same basic principles: They use compelling language and powerful images, establish an appropriate context (physical, intellectual, emotional, and social) within which to place a story, and then develop a relationship with both their audience and their story. As Lipman suggests, the storyteller, audience, and story "form the three corners of a triangle -- the storytelling triangle."

He offers material "beyond the basics for all who tell stories in work and play." Obviously, "play" includes situations in which stories are told to "children of all ages" primarily to delight and entertain them. But what about "work"? While reading Lipman's book, I soon realized that his insights and advice are at least as relevant to "work" as they are to "play." Effective storytelling skills are indeed valuable in all forms of communication between and among people.

Only in recent years, however, has there been significant interest in what is generally referred to as "the business narrative." I shudder when recalling countless formal presentations I made in the past when droning on and on much as then Governor Bill Clinton once did at a Democratic national convention. Thousands roared their approval when he said "In conclusion...." and then groaned as he continued on for another 35 minutes. He indicated little (if any) respect for his audience. Had Lipman been given the opportunity to help Mr. Clinton to prepare his remarks, presumably the length of his speech would have been reduced by half, if not by more. Lipman would also have formulated an interesting "story" to be told with authentic passion or at least enthusiasm while investing the narrative with vivid images and compelling details and, in countless other ways, enable Mr. Clinton to establish, immediately, a close bond with his audience and then nourish that relationship with empathy, respect, and (yes) humility.

The material in this book is carefully organized and developed within five Sections after Lipman briefly reviews "storytelling basics and beyond." He explains how to transfer imagery. How to establish relationships with the story told, with the given audience, and with yourself. Then in Section Five, he explains how to integrate each component of the storytelling event, noting that "the components are only important insofar as they contribute to the overall effect" of the event. That is, as "an invisible whole." The focus in Chapter 18 is on the four "layers" of attention. In the next chapter, Lipman explains how a storyteller can direct her or his attention "in a way that helps to connect each moment in the story to [her or his] overall goals for the storytelling event." He concludes by examining what he calls "the mystery of transformation -- the sometimes elusive result of perfect balance among all the components of the storytelling event."

It is important to keep in mind that, although Lipman briefly reviews the basics of storytelling, he goes "beyond" them (or at least explores each in much greater depth) than would, for example, an author of Storytelling for Dummies. A story will be told best by continuing to shape it while carefully observing those to whom it is told. Only then will the "storytelling triangle" have a "dynamic balance." To me, the single most important point which Lipman makes is that the storytelling event is the result but never the conclusion of a process. Revision of material and refinement of presentation are inevitable. The storyteller's journey never ends and sometimes no transformation occurs. What then? According to Lipman, "change the path, dance backwards, or leap into the unknown."

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Simmons' aforementioned book, The Story Factor, as well as Robert B. Miller and Gary A. Williams' The 5 Paths to Persuasion, Stephen Denning's The Leader's Guide to Storytelling, and Storytelling in Organizations co-authored by John Seely Brown, Denning, Katarina Groh, and Laurence Prusak.

This is a book about how to improve your life, not just your stories! If you want to take your storytelling to the next level, buy this immediately !

4 out of 5 stars Bringing a Story to Life.......2003-09-07

As the title suggests, this book is not aimed at storytelling novices. It has wonderful information, however, organized around the storytelling "triangle" (the story, the teller, and the listener) -- and all of the relationships between them. Lipman includes information on language, imagery, kinesthetics, voice, understanding the story, preparing the story, and much more.

Pretty good story about spooks of old time Indians and prospectors running around town near the Sierra Nevada. You and your friends happen to be caught in the middle of it. The story is nowhere near as creepy as Mystery of Chimney Rock but there are some pretty gruesome deaths. I, myself, stayed in one spot too long, got caught and tied at the stake by some ghosts who then proceeded to kill us with a burning rod of iron. wow. Pretty rough way for a handful of innocent kids to go. Some of the endings are unsatisfyingly cut short leaving you to wonder 'so?.. now what?'. The dialogue is also pretty dull at times with scooby doo like banter. Other than that, the book is well designed and flows well with no events being recycled from other paths.
