Customer Reviews:
Fast service. excellent condition.......2007-10-02
I received my book before expected. The condition was as it was stated- excellent. Very satisfy with supplier.
Too thorough...........2007-04-25
I'm a student at the University of Michigan business school and this was a book assigned for one of the introductory economics courses here. It is VERY verbose and this can be both beneficial and problematic. On one hand, this book would be really helpful for those who are weak in symbolic logic since Mishkin go to great lengths to explain everything. But some of the unnecessary extra explanations can be distracting to the point of confounding the essentials. It wouldn't hurt to trim 1/3 of the contents in each chapter.
good service.......2005-10-05
I ordered the book right before the hurrican Katrina. So my ordered was canceled, but they contacted me right away about my order and refunded my money back. Good service!!
Pretty good book for intermediate level.......2004-07-11
Design:
The book is designed well with appropriate headings and sub-headings making it smooth to read and navigate. The language used is also well understood.
Content:
This book introduces the various financial markets: bond, stock, foreign exchange and a brief discussion on derivatives. It gives a general idea and analysis behind the operating mechanisms of monetary policies, paving the way for further studies into the topics.
Its main focus is on the U.S. economy, and includes applications in the European Union and Asia as well. Small sections are devoted to real world applications, with reference to the concepts taught.
For who:
On the other hand, this book remains an introduction to monetary economies and is not for students seeking detailed analysis. Students should also have a basic background on economics in order to utilize the text to the fullest.
Wonderful and accessible book.......2002-11-23
Highly recommended for both dummies and people familiar with economics. The author presents an unbiased, unpartisan, clear introduction to numerous aspects of monetary policy, financial institutions, and financial markets. Along with factual material the author presents important and profound generalizations and principles.

Book Description
This monograph, addressing researchers as well as engineers, is devoted to nonclassical thermoelastic modelling of the nonlinear dynamics of shells. Differential equations of different dimensionality and different type have to be combined and nonlinearities of different geometrical, physical or elasto-plastic categories are addressed. Special emphasis is given to the Bubnov--Galerkin method. It can be applied to many problems in the theory of plates and shells, even those with very complex geometries, holes and various boundary conditions. The authors made every effort to keep the text intelligible for both practitioners and graduate students, although they offer a rigorous treatment of both purely mathematical and numerical approaches presented so that the reader can understand, analyse and track the nonlinear dynamics of spatial systems (shells) with thermomechanical behaviours.

Combat Techniques of Taiji, Xingyi, and Bagua: Principles and Practices of Internal Martial Arts
ASIN: 1556432534
Release Date: 1998-01-19 |
Book Description
This book's primary focus is on the detailed descriptions of the three main internal boxing methods (Hsing I, Ba Gua, and Tai Chi), as well as many substyles. In-depth comparisons and analyses of the different arts in regard to their methods of movement, principles and philosophies, use of force and energy, body mechanics, and some practical applications, are also described. Frantzis also includes "Personal Odyssey" sections where he recounts many of his interesting encounters with famous martial arts masters. This feature recalls Robert W. Smith's Chinese Boxing: Masters and Methods, from a previous generation of martial arts books. To make this book as accessible to beginners as possible, there are five appendices covering the different styles of tai chi (such as Yang, Chen, Wu, Tung, Hou, and Sun), a history of Ba Gua, energy anatomy of the human body, a summary of Mr. Frantzis's training and lineage, a chapter on Chinese terminology and transliteration, and an extensive glossary.
Customer Reviews:
More scholarly than practical, but informative.......2007-04-30
I think this is a book that would be most enjoyable to those who wish to add to their intellectual or theoretical knowledge of the internal martial arts. It may come as a disappointment to those looking for a "how-to" manual, and I doubt anything mentioned in the book really ranks as a true "combat secret." However, the book does contain a decent amount of information on a subject that normally does not see a lot of exposure (or at least not as much as many would like). While certainly not comprehensive (not all variations of bagua, xingyi, or tai chi are explored, which would no doubt be an exhaustive project spanning several volumes) it is useful as a comparative resource. I found the personal anecdotes charming and often inspiring, though perhaps lacking in credibility at times. Some things the author writes about may have to be taken with a grain of salt, but overall I enjoyed the text and found it useful. I would suggest, however, that those looking for actual techniques to practice look elsewhere.
Misunderstood, but great!.......2006-11-12
Sadly there are a lot of people who are misled but the subtitle that says: "Combat Secrets of Ba Gua, Tai Chi, and Hsing-I." And I see how it can be, I don't think this subtitle should have been used. Otherwise it's a very informative book.
People who posted negative reviews on this book do have points. The book does have structure issues. The book seems a bit chaotic when you read it. Another thing people mention is author's "self-praise." While I do find that there could have been less of it, I don't find it horrible or obstructing your reading flow.
This book is packed with information. Not much for practical knowledge, but there's a lot of info as far as theory goes. But what some don't understand I guess, is that it's an axiom. Even book on strictly technique can practically help you only so much. The book cannot develop your fast-twitch muscles, cannot give you sharp reflexes, techniques, or supply you with Chi (Ki, Hei). No matter how attractive the word "secrets" in title sounds, there's no secret or magical way to improve. What "secrets" means in this book is an explanation of energy work, the other way to view human body for martial applications and such. Also "secrets" in this book are the knowledge and wisdom of the great martial artists the author had privilege to train with. If you can see this knowledge and apply it to your training or not is up to you.
This is not a book about techniques of internal martial arts, but rather it helps you understand what are you learning: all the energy, technical or mechanical works behind internal martial arts. Kind of like explaining you how the plane works rather than teaching you to pilot it.
All in all it's a great book which is rather misunderstood (partly because of subtitle).
Hmmm.........2006-11-10
A wise man once said something akin to "Those who know, do not speak. Those who do not know, speak." Another wise man once said "A teacher is someone who started before you."
Undoubtedly mr. Frantzis is an intelligent, talented, well-trained, eloquent person, fluent in so and so many languages. However, I find the amount of excessive pride either attributed to or claimed by the author himself (i do not know what is the case) somewhat troubling. I prefer my teachers humble and modest. Boasting creates unnecessary boundaries and thresholds that merely obscure the arts. Besides, how much time and energy is waisted because of protocol? I'm sure many people can relate to this (though protocol can be beneficial too sometimes).
The internal arts mentioned in this book to me seem to be all the more interesting and profoundly inspiring because they are accessible to all. We are all beginners in a field that knows no point of arrival, no stage of absolute attainment of perfection. I guess every field needs its gospel and prophets. What a shame. I wonder whether this is really something mr. Frantzis really aspires.
Nonetheless an awesome book, very inspiring and informative.
Strength of the Blade is not in the sword, but in the Arm that Weilds it!.......2006-06-28
This tome is of the Power within, recommended to those that follow Bushido and Chivalary.
To Thine I say these words
Be Strong, Be true
Never in Malice, Never in Hate , Never in evil shall this blade be raised. But in righteousness and Justice forever shall it shine
Be Victorious
Our time will come
Interesting but not very structured.......2005-11-16
This book has a ton of information on not only internal martial arts but their external brethren. The way the book was written gives me the impression that Mr. Frantzis is very big on two things, functionalism and fighting applications. Truth be told, the way the book is written is very scattered and dry. It is on the scholar level, so for those who haven't yet experienced the martial arts (internal or external), this isn't the best book to begin with. Without a doubt, there is a lot of good info on the three bigger styles (Hsing-I, Ba Gua, and Tai Chi),the comparisons of the three is extensive enough to give any one an idea of which style suits them best, and the author speaks lot of other styles that most people have never heard of here and there. If you can get past the organization glich and the dry conversions, then this might be the book for you.
Book Description
Based on the author’s extensive experience with such past masters as Wang Shu Jin, this book clearly explains how the awareness and development of chi energy in the mind, body, and spirit give the internal martial arts their strength and edge over external disciplines like tae kwon do, karate, and kung fu. Mixing a compelling personal story with inspiration and instruction, author Frantzis describes in detail such concepts as Fa Jin, the ability to project the opponent without harm or injury; drilling power and magnetic hand; soft and hard power; the differences between the major internal martial arts; the 16 concepts of mastery of the internal style; the use of speed and power; and much more. Frantzis includes brief, vivid biographies of the great martial arts masters with whom he studied and offers hard-won insights into the kind of dedication and training that made his 16 years in Asia as a warrior/healer/priest so rewarding. This edition includes a new foreword, a new introduction by the author, an extensive chapter with practical explanations on the spiritual traditions of the internal martial arts, an index, and more.

Pitching In.......2007-10-18
Alchemy of Voice
Dr. Morton as a speech therapist, writes in a layman's style approaching developing an interestint voice. His advice on finding your 'natural voice" as opposed to the 'habitual' voice compliments Stuart Pearson's book "The Alchemy of Voice."
It helps the voice teacher to show students how to find the best pitch for each individual. Although seriously treated in both books, students will have fun finding their own level of pitch.
ICLS.......2007-09-04
I suffer from Spasmodic Dysphonia and after being told by my doctor that the only treatment available was to get Botox shots in my vocal chords every three months, being a singer, I looked for an alternative treatment and found this book. It has helped me to use my voice in such a way as to enable me to speak without my voice cracking much of the time. Surprisingly, this condition doesn't seem to affect the singing voice. If I remember to use the advice in this book, it works very well. I have sent it to many friends who also have vocal problems
Absoluetely the best self-help book I've ever read!.......2007-06-03
Let me start off by saying that this book is a life-saver. When I say it is the best self-help book I've ever read, I mean because most self-help books are tempopary and sometimes lead you right to where you started but this book is very practical and offers permenant result. I have been abusing my voice throughout my life, and I see the reaction it had on people. People were avoiding me because I always wanted a commanding but ended with a harsh, nauseon, and unpleasant husk. At first I was skeptical it was ever possible to change one's voice and ever more skeptical when doing the extremely simple excercises, but...IT WORKS!!! Now I have a vibrant voice that is project deeply and loudly anywhere commanding the attention I always wanted (think of it as yelling deeply but without souding like yelling). Though it does take some practices until permeant; and for me it took a week. A must have for anybody wanting that extra success!
Great tool that clears away the muck........2007-01-04
I found this book really helpful. As an actor who does a lot of professional stage, I have had to spend time working on my voice over the years. Many books I find, for lack of a better term, too "groovy" for me (Linlater, Berry) or too complicated (Lessac). Here, Cooper deftly sweeps aside a lot of that clutter, corrects some simple misapprehensions about the use of the speaking voice, and presents a simple, elegant plan for improving. You can even "check" your work with a voice recorder to see if it's actually working. It may not be everything you need to really improve your voice (hence the 4 stars), but if I had to pick only one book to own, this would be it.
On the face of it, Cooper's advice may seem too easy. After all, the whole idea and the suggested lessons could probably fit on a single page. But this stuff works; so, the fact that it's simple shouldn't dissuade anyone from it's value. Other reviewers have noted Cooper's penchant for repetition, and that he tries too hard to sell his reader on the importance of a good speaking voice (presumably his reader's already sold else why would he have bought the book). But it's a short read anyway, so what's the big deal. And besides, if it was any thinner I wouldn't be able to find it on my shelves.
Highly recommended..........2006-07-13
If you want to change your voice (respectively be aware of how you speak) I can highly recommend this book. It's worth every penny!
