Book Description
An Introduction to Technical Analysis from One of the Top Names in the Business
"Essential Technical Analysis is a highly valued resource for technical traders. The importance of comprehensive and well-researched market behaviors, indicators, and systems were well expressed graphically with many examples. No technical analyst should be without this book. Stevens's book could become another classic."
-Suri Duddella, President of siXer.cOm, inc. (Forbes magazine's "Best of the Web" in Technical Analysis Category)
"Essential Technical Analysis will give the new student of technical analysis a good overview of both classical chart patterns and a myriad of technical indicators, but so will many other texts. What sets this volume apart is that it presents the subject in the context of real-world trading situations, not idealized well-chosen examples. Books on technical analysis, especially those aimed at novices, are typically filled with charts in which the selected patterns are both unambiguous and work perfectly. As Leigh Stevens recognizes and confronts, however, the real world is a far more sloppy place: charts may often contain conflicting indicators, and patterns don't always work as described. Reading Essential Technical Analysis is like sitting beside a veteran technical analyst and having him describe his methods and market experiences."
-Jack Schwager, author of Market Wizards, Stock Market Wizards, and Schwager on Futures
"Leigh Stevens's depth of experience, acquired over many years, has generated a deep understanding of, and commitment to, the discipline of technical analysis. He is also one of those rare individuals who have both the ability to convey the essence of his ideas in a wonderfully simple and straightforward way and through the use of personal anecdotes and experiences. There are not many people around who can both walk the walk and talk the talk."
-Tony Plummer, author of Forecasting Financial Markets, Director of Rhombus Research Ltd., and former Director of Hambros Bank Ltd. and Hambros Investment Management PLC
"Leigh Stevens brings his considerable years of experience to this project. He has crafted a real-world book on technical analysis that gives you the benefit of his trials and errors as well as 120 years of observations and market wisdom from Charles Dow to the latest indicators and approaches. Investors who suffered from the bursting of the technology bubble in 1999 and 2000 should read Essential Technical Analysis from cover to cover and learn to apply the lessons to the next market cycle."
-Bruce M. Kamich, CMT, past President of the Market Technicians Association and Adjunct Professor of Finance at Rutgers University and Baruch College

I want my money back!.......2007-09-13
I expected a little more than this... This book doesnt contain anything concrete, as if the author deliberately omit everything that is of real importance. Just look at the part about MACD. Way too vague, I get better insight on MACD by googling it out myself. If you seriously looking for a solid book about technical analysis, look else where! There are better ways to throw away money.
A Technical approach to stock trading........2006-03-17
This book is well written. Each chapter has an introduction and summary at the end of chapter.
Its not a book for someone just starting out trading. The first seventy pages is mainly an introduction to the Technicals. Its an introduction to Chart pattern, Pattern recognition,Trendlines,Moving averages, etc.. followed along with annotation on each charts identifying certain patterns.
Some good information in this book which is sort of condensed from other Technical Analysis books into one book.
Its the stuff you need to know!
Look elsewhere.......2005-02-24
I unfortunately purchased this book on the strength of the review in the MTA newsletter Technically Speaking. I found absolutely nothing of value, and nothing to indicate to me that the author was qualified to comment on the subject. The quality of the printing leaves much to be desired, almost as though Wiley did this one "on the cheap". If you've bought it, give your copy to someone you hate, and it will at least accomplish something.
A very slow read.......2004-04-08
As a relative newcomer to technical analysis techniques, I found this book hard to digest. The charts are hard to read, the examples are not always clear, and the author doesn't relate the knowledge to actual trades.
I have learned from the book but I would not recommend it for first time students of technical analysis. Also, the book contains many annoying errors and typos, especially in the first half. Leigh should fire his editor....I don't think they read this book.
Could be great for some..........2003-12-26
This book is unfortunately 'yet another' beginner TA book.
A couple of problems for more experienced practitioners:
- I noticed quite a few 'errors' in the book. Some are definitional issues, some are typos and some are just very poor examples (eg of charts).
- The feel I get from the book is that the author is not a very accomplished practitioner himself. Some issues that would be experienced by those who have been trading were not discussed. Eg false breaks were discussed, but were not compared with 'successful' patterns/breaks which exhibited similar circumstances (ie how to distinguish or set a strategy for potential false breaks).
- Quite a verbose writing style? I prefer more succint texts...
- I can't really say I learnt anything.
However, here's the positive side of things:
- Pretty comprehensive of basic concepts, with some useful and important concepts for beginners. Although I would suspect whether beginners would actually pick up on this. Eg comments on volume / cycles are worthy to note!
- Quite an easy read.
- Great additional commentary and 'integration' with psychology/experience that most beginning TA books do not have. Eg author constantly quotes appropriate gems from other books/top traders.
Overall, I think this is a good beginner book but experienced traders would not find much value in the book (especially the time spent on reading it!!).

Ok, say its time to curl up on the couch with your favorite book on the cosmos. You go over to the fridge grab a 40 oz, stop by the tomb of knowledge and browse your selections. This book is the bomb on all that is UNI. You pick this little baby up and jump on the couch with a your drink and get ready to go on a tour of everything observable. This book is just cool. I have checked it out of the library many times. And now I am making it my own. Charts, numbers, stuff. It's all in there.

The book is divided into three easy to follow parts, each with many color photographs and color drawings. This book is an exciting tour of; yesterday, today, and the possible tomorrow of our universe.
This is an excellent book! Technical but readable........1996-02-02
My son spotted this in the library. He read their copy, and then got one of his own. His copy was ruined when the house flooded and he got another. Well organized--just the right level of challenge. Great illustrations. Well organized. No particular level of scientific knowledge required. A good book

Book Description
Here is an instruction manual for the novice worker in rawhide. Unlike many other works on the subject, this book assumes no previous knowledge or experience. The reader is shown in drawings and photographs every step of the procedure, from starting with a fresh cowhide, through cutting strings and braiding them, to finished reatas, bosals, hobbles, or reins. The book also is useful to the collector of braided rawhide by demonstrating what to look for when buying an article. "For those who collect, use, or aspire to learn how to make your own cowboy horse gear, don't miss Woolery's book." --Western Horseman
Customer Reviews:
A complete guide to braiding horse tack........1998-05-21
Woolery has included a wide variety of braiding techniques and their application with regard to making horse tack. Although all of the examples are western-type tack, the pieces of tack described are useful to any horseman. Learning how to make your own tack can be very handy out on a trail when something breaks, and Woolery's book has enough information to become an expert or a competant amateur.

Provides Much Helpful Information.......2007-08-11
My son picked up "Everyday Math for Dummies" at the library. He saw the word "Math" and had to have it. Once he saw that it contained more words than numbers, however, he put it down. As I flipped through it I decided I would bring it home anyway, if only for the chapter on balancing your checkbook, a task I have always struggled to master. This is actually a very good book, providing an introduction to the Math that you wish that they would teach you in school - like how to balance a checkbook, figure out compound interest (OK - I think they taught that one in school but it had little real-world applicability at that point), and how to understand stock values and mortgage rates. And for those of you who really want to understand what they wanted to teach you in Algebra and Trig, it provides sections on that as well (I'll admit I skipped over those). I read the reviews on Amazon and some mentioned that it wasn't simple enough. I can understand that. You do need some understanding of basic math to get this book - adding, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages are all taken for granted here. Still, it was very interesting and helped explain some topics that had eluded me for years.
A lot of marginally useful arithmetic.......2007-05-20
I was looking for a book that reviewed basic math(i.e. grammar school multiplication, fractions, decimals, percentages, etc.) This book covered topics such as mortgages, how to calculate tips, etc. It wasn't a match.
Peter Roth's Book Review.......2006-07-26
All-in-all, a good book. I still had some difficulty in reading the author's explanations.
Everyday Math for Dummies.......2006-03-14
it is a very good book for helping your children with there math home work
Not Everyday Math For Dummies.......2005-04-17
It is really ironic that this book starts off about how most people don't finish the books they pick up, because that's exactly what I did with this. Why? The author made no effort to show every single step of his mathematical equations, making it confusing after awhile to understand his babbling about things like percentages and annuities. It is obviously not written for "dummies", but for those who are either in a math class right now or have superior math skills already. Also upon looking through the book I could not understand why most people would even care about most of the things written about in this book. I'd say do the math and save your money!
Book Description
In 1936, Quentin Young, a 22-year-old Chinese American, led American socialite Ruth Harkness on a 1,500-mile expedition into the remote mountains of Sichuan. Braving warlords and primitive tribes, the duo captured a giant panda and brought it back alive, the first time a live panda had been seen by the Western world. Hunters and scientists assumed the pair had stolen the animal. When it became clear the find was genuine, Ruth Harkness became a celebrity. But Quentin Young, together with his brother and fellow guide, Jack, was swept into the chaos of World War II and became a spy. A few years ago, Michael Kiefer discovered Quentin, now elderly and living in the United States. The resulting book sets the record straight.
Customer Reviews:
Panda-monium!!!.......2006-02-23
If you are one of the many who has been smitten by our Baby Panda, Tia Shan, at the National Zoo in DC, and have read The Lady and the Panda, by V. Croke, or Ruth Harkness, here is a book that is a must read. Mrs. Harkness would have never been able to get the first panda to the US without help from the Young brothers, Quentin and Jack. Mr. Kiefer spent years speaking w/them, and they provide information and perspective that helps give more life & detail to very important characters that didn't get the recgonition they surely deserved. Great photo's wish there were more.
The authentic narrative of Ruth Harkness and panda.......2005-06-12
Though a movie and a new book have been based on the story of Ruth Harkness, Quentin Young and the expedition to find the first panda have appeared recently, both were inspired by Michael Kiefer's book, which is the real McCoy. Originally commissioned as a piece for the New Yorker, the manuscript was ultimately published as this book. In the meantime, Kiefer's exciting story based on his unique access to one of the principals, Quentin Young, inspired the other two projects. The film, the name of which I forget, twisted the story into total fiction, and the latest book is derived in large part from this one. So if you want to read a well-written great escape of an adventure story set in the context of place, politics, and history and with the imprimateur of George B.Schaller himself, Michael Kiefer's " Chasing the Panda: How an unlikely pair of adventurers won the race to capture the mythical white bear" is the one to read. The photographs from Quentin Young's archives are awesome, beautiful, and illuminate the lost world or the patrician Chinese of the day, as well as the expedition itself.
Interesting read.......2004-06-19
Although not exactly what I was expecting, this book was in interesting read about the Chinese naturalists and their involvement in how the West first came to know the giant panda. This book detailed many historical facts about how Western naturalists, with the aid of a couple of Chinese, moved through China and collected many specimens for display in the US. I recommend it to anyone who has a deep interest in the giant panda and the history behind our current love affair with these black and white bears.
Worthy Effort, But Polluted with Gossip & Inuendo.......2004-04-26
The characters and their true to life tale of adventure keep this book going, but the author has watched too much Hard Copy or Entertainment Tonight and seems to dwell on the sex lives and personal failures of many of the principals, which have nothing to add to the overall search for the pandas. He seems to have exploited his relationship with Quentin Young, which takes away from the dignity of the story. Nonetheless, I would recommend the book as an interesting read and one of only a few on the subject.
An Eclectic Escape, and in Non-Fiction.......2002-04-24
Kiefer provides an eclectic escape that covers nature, people, politics and history...and all within the confines of a true tale! I will never gawk at those cute bears the same way again, knowing the story of their "discovery" and what that story tells us of the specific times--and the general nature of people. The read is "light," yet one learns a bit along the way. This is my version of a nearly perfect summer read. A romantic "novel" for thinking persons.

chashing bears review.......2002-10-24
I think that chashing bears is a very good book and that the forester family got closer, that danny grew stronger and stronger and that him and his dad hank got closer and that mike gain some respect for danny and knew if danny wanted to be a computer freak he can be and if he was weak he was weak...
Chasing Bears.......2000-09-12
I purchased this book to read to my 9 yr son while vactioning in Voyageurs National Park. On a rainy day I began reading it to my son out loud. Soon my husband and 12 year daughter came to listen. It became our evening ritual, reading several chapters out loud to the whole family. It is very well written and suspenseful. We hope he writes another book.
Adventure in the North woods.......2000-02-15
I found this book to be educational as well as entertaining. It discusses details of canoeing and camping but is also a good story about fathers and sons getting to know each other and changing because of their adventures.

A damn fine read.......2004-11-25
If you're a runner, this book is a must read. Mainly because no matter who you are or where you run, you'll know someone who fits one of the characters. And that makes it fun. Plus, the story is well-crafted.
If you're not a runner, then you may have trouble relating to the characters and their stories of 100 mile weeks, but you'll still enjoy the story between the two main characters and their group of runners.
The final 70 or so pages must be read in one sitting as the book's intensity builds. For a first effort, I really thought this was a good book. Looking forward to the next effort from this writer.
