Book Description
This new edition presents the latest cultivation and biotechnological advances that have contributed to the modernization of mushroom farming and the mushroom industry. It supplies each step in the complex mushroom cultivation process, exploring not only the "how" but also the "why". Professionals/scientists in related fields will obtain a much greater knowledge of the nutritional and medicinal benefits that mushrooms have to offer. This interdisciplinary approach will appeal to readers in a wide range of fields with its complete coverage of breeding, efficient cultivation practices, nutritional value, and medicinal/pharmaceutical utility. "
[This book] forms a comprehensive and up-to-date source of information for all interested in edible and medicinal mushrooms and their cultivation." - Peroonia, 2004 "...the personal practical experience, depth of knowledge, and enthusiasm of the authors shine in these chapters, which are to me the heart of the book..." - Mycological Research "If you are a mushroom enthusiast, you must have this complex book..." - Journal of Natural Products "To my knowledge, no past or current book comes closes to covering all the subjects considered in this book... - Solomon P. Wasser, in International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, Vol. 6 "The authors provide the readers with complete information about mushroom species cultivated commercially, world production of mushrooms, and use of various agricultural and industrial wastes as substrates
Each valuable species of mushrooms is described in a thoroughly detailed manner. Several pages are devoted to each species with particular focus on the following subjects: Introduction, biological characteristics, requirements for mycelial growth, requirements for fruiting body foundation, cultivation methods, harvesting and processing, special cultivation practice, fruiting and liquid media (for same species), drying and storage, nutritional contents and medicinal properties (for same species), biological and compounds (for same species)
These chapters are very important. They contain complete information about modern cultivation and use of the most important culinary-medicinal mushrooms of the world. A very important conclusion for future readers can be found in the summary dedicated to species with regional appeal
The book is richly illustrated with more than 100 original photographs and figures. The book contains about 800 terms in the glossary, which is very useful, especially for amateurs and beginning scientists
The key difference between the new and the old version is that this latest edition has been expanded by more than 60%. Instead of eight chapters in the first edition, the new book contains 22 chapters
This is a well-written and thorough book
. I would strongly recommend this new edition of mushrooms without hesitation to industrial and medicinal mycologists, mushroom growers, botanists, plant pathologists, and professionals and scientists in related fields
. I will use this book extensively, both in teaching mycology to university students and in experimental work in my laboratory. The value of this book cannot be overestimated. The potentially extensive use of this book can be recognized in universities, classrooms, laboratories, etc. This book is useful for beginning students through PhD studies and beyond. This book is a real encyclopedia of mushroom biology including cultivation, nutritional value, medicinal value, and environmental impact." - Solomon P. Wasser, in International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms, Volume 6

Seeing the Earth, Knowing Our Place.......2004-09-06
Icons of Loss and Grace: Moments from the Natural World, is a collection of lyrical and profoundly personal reflections on life and place. In these lovely essays, Susan Hanson explores the relationship between the human world and the world of nature, between cultivated gardens and what she calls "the familiar wild," between the wilderness within and the wilderness without. Hers is a world of where sandhill cranes call to our most primal selves; where pulling henbit out of the flowerbed is a way of taking the earth's pulse; where no matter how sharp and bitter the loss, there is some sweetness, some goodness in it. She writes about butterflies and shooting stars above the Frio River, and real homeland security. She tells us that earthworms, at the threshold of winter, reinvent the world, and that the silence of a monastic retreat can teach us "that there is nothing left to say, and everything to learn." She takes a moment to watch and smile at two dung beetles who are playing their earnest roles in the "riotous recyling of all that falls to the earth." And as she touches an abandoned egg in an empty nest, she remembers Emily Dickenson's poem, "Hope is the thing with feathers."
Through these moments of deep attention to the world of nature, in prose that is profoundly simple deeply evocative, Susan Hanson helps to define her own nature, her own longings--and ours, as well. "Attention," she says. "What more do I have to give the world than that? What more can I do than say 'This matters, listen, look, engage'? What more is there to do?"
Just this, we are taught in Icons of Loss and Grace. Just this. It is the only lesson we need to learn.

Excellent Book!.......2002-07-19
This book is incredible. You cannot put it down. A great gripping TRUE story!
WOW!.......2002-04-26
I bought this book because I wanted to get a feel for high altitude climbing though I have no interest in climbing for myself. Geez! I got the picture. I'm still blown away by the story of what happened on the mountain. But, thankfully, blown away, only in a metaphorical sense...
I had a friend who was a high altitude climber who told me about a friend climbing in the Himalayas. The guy went out during a blizzard at high altitude to relieve himself and was never seen again. My friend said,"He was blown into the stratosphere". I never understood that kind of language until I read this book.
It's an incredible story of survival right up there with the story of the voyage of the crew of the Endurance.
The writing is awfully good for a mountain climber!

Helpful for each nationality.......2007-01-28
I am a ESL teacher and tutor 5 Vietnamese students. Four out of 5 ordered this dictionary for themselves. The reason I did not rate this with 5 stars is that some useful words were not found in this dictionary. When I visited Vietnam next year I am considering taking some along to share with my host families.
Enjoy

A Great Work of American Fiction........2000-11-03
"A Little More than Kin" is is one of the most amazing works of American fiction I have ever read. "Kin" showcases a few days in the life of a down-on-his-luck New Englander and his "special" son. A must read!

Marly Youmans's poetic voice softly sings every line of this evocative first novel about a Southern girl's 13th summer. Meg, the daughter of a pragmatic single mother, is on a search for God, "even though Momma says that spiritual life is a myth." She looks for meaning, spiritual and otherwise, in her first kiss, in her relationship with her mother, and in the death of a neighbor's child. Each of these life-changing experiences is detailed in episodic chapters sharing one common theme: Little Jordan, the stream that runs through Meg's backyard. It is on the banks of Little Jordan that Meg finds the neighbor's drowned child, an event that, despite its sadness, helps Meg forge a strong bond with the child's mother, Isidore. And Little Jordan's reservoir provides a secluded swimming hole where Meg dives headfirst into her first serious relationship with local boy Fred Massey. It is through the rhythms of Little Jordan that Meg begins to understand the rhythms of life, death, and love: "I learned about distance and about seeing at close range... that summer I was busy running up against things, learning what they meant." Youmans constructs this touching novella with spare and carefully chosen prose, and in the process gently encourages teens to slow down, listen, and enjoy the priceless time between youth and adulthood. (Ages 13 to 17) --Jennifer Hubert
Product Description
n her haunting and exquisite first novel, Marly Youmans brings us to a town on the banks of the Little Jordan River, where in the span of a summer season an entire lifetime of experience and sensations unfolds.
Told from the perspective of Meg, a precocious thirteen-year-old who is part nymph, part young woman, Little Jordan recounts a series of unusual events a death, an attempted suicide, a mother's disastrous affair, a young girl's first kiss - that resonate, and finally coalesce, in the reader's mind.
Marly Youmans conveys with elegance and economy the unpredictable tragedies and subtle oddities that hover above a small Southern town one special summer. As you tumble through the smells and sounds of the season mown hay, wet grass, a search party's flashlights scanning a dark field you come to realize that this could be your town, an otherwise ordinary town, but one that harbors deep secrets for even the ordinary teems underneath with strange happenings.
Customer Reviews:
beautiful, even for a non avid reader.......2003-07-01
I randomly picked this book off the library shelf and gave it a read today. Not being an avid reader, it was hard for me to distinguish the plot...or the meaning, but I must say it was probably the most beautiful piece I've ever read.
Poetic and Beautiful.......2002-12-16
I thought this book was wonderfully written in a fresh different way. She shows the Summer of one girl's life that changed her forever. It may be short, but it is definately a high reading level and worth reading. For those of you who say there was no plot, there is a plot. You just can't see it as well as in other novels. In many other novels the plot jumps out at you. In this one the plot is hidden and you have to want to find it to actually find it. This novel is beautiful, just beautiful!
What a beautiful book........2001-10-24
I read Marly Youmans's novel *Catherwood* and wanted to see her earlier work. This one is charming. The people who rated it lower just didn't know how to read a novel written by a poet. Youmans focuses on mood rather than plot, and the book is fragile and lovely.
Death, love and growing up, all in one small book.......2000-06-01
Little Jordan is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. It is rich with observation, ripe metaphor and vital happenings. Readers who like an A goes to B goes to C plotline may be discourage by the lack of traditional plot, but readers who love language, finely drawn characters and the poetry in everyday life will love this book.
Poetic but without substance.......2000-05-18
I wanted to like this book, but it just slipped through my fingers. Things happened and the slim plot moved along, but there was very little point to any of it. The book just ended without an ending. It's too bad, because the author writes beautifully albeit in a dreamy fashion.
