Book Description
In this second edition of the popular Fundraising on the Internet, Mal Warwick, Ted Hart, Nick Allen, and a sterling group of experts in the field have completely rewritten the first-ever hands-on guide for navigating the ever-changing world of fundraising on the Internet. This no-nonsense book gets beyond the hype and hyperbole, and takes into account the new realities of the post dot.com crash marketplace to offer solid advice on how to use technology to raise funds.

Fundraising on the Internet: The ePhilanthropyFoundation.org's Guide to Success Online.......2006-03-18
Timely! Fundraising on the internet is the next level of fundraising for non-profits, and this is an excellent way to get started!
Thorough and reliable.......2004-12-13
This collaborative effort is well-written, fast-paced, and extremely up-to-date. Each chapter is on a different aspect of Internet fundraising, written by a different author. Speaking from personal experience, this book has been extremely possible in our own business of helping nonprofits raise funds online. We recommend it to any nonprofit who wants to take advantage of the net.
Very useful!.......2002-12-10
Very useful for organizations working with an interactive agency to imporve their efforts on the web...
A fantastic collection of resources!.......2002-01-31
A fantastic collection of resources! Warwick, Hart, and Allen brought together an amazing array of experts to assemble a practical, hands-on book full of interesting case examples. As an application service provider working almost exclusively with non-profits, we found the book particularly useful as a source book for guidelines and best practices. Our clients who have read the book were enthusiastic about everything from the specific strategies to the fundraising tips.
This is an all-encompassing, basic guide that makes fundraising on the Internet accessible to the most inexperienced nonprofits but gives insightful advice to veterans. I wholeheartedly recommend the book and plan to make this required reading for our customers and employees.
Indispensable Guide To Fundraising On The Internet.......2001-11-20
If the events of Sept. 11th proved anything it is that fundraising via the Internet has come of age. Witness the incredible success of online fundraising by many of the nation's top relief agencies. Now, nonprofits across America are saying not if they will adopt on an online fundraising presence but how fast they can tap into this new technology in ways that meet an agency's needs but stay within their budget constraints. Fundraising on the Internet, 2nd Edition, could not have come out at a more opportune time. As the editor of a weekly on-line email newsletter directed at nonprofits throughout Arizona and the Southwest I was particularly impressed with the chapters on recruiting and renewing donors online. I can always stand to learn more about effective recruiting and promotion techniques to build an even bigger sense of community between our donors who, as the book carefully explains, are much more likely to open an email or click on a website before calling us or responding to a survey they receive in the mail. At almost 300 pages this book is a bargain. The authors do not shy away from providing any number of resources that can help a nonprofit create an Internet presence or expand upon whatever success they have already achieved with their online constituents. The book also includes 4 case studies and a number of resources including such important topics as ethical online fundraising standards and practices and how to use the Internet to both promote and manage donor advised funds. I heartily recommend this book. The authors have spent considerable time and energy to provide a definitive text on this most important subject.

Description:
The water that is used in the production process of a commodity is called the 'virtual water' contained in the commodity. International trade of commodities brings along international flows of virtual water. The objective of this paper is to quantify the volumes of virtual water flows between nations in the period 1995-1999 insofar related to international crop trade and to analyse national virtual water balances in relation to national water needs and water availability. The basic approach is to multiply international crop trade flows (ton/yr) by their associated virtual water content (m^3ton^-^1). The calculations show that the global volume of crop-related international virtual water flows between nations was 695Gm^3yr^-^1 in average over the period 1995-1999. For comparison: the total water use by crops in the world has been estimated at 5400Gm^3yr^-^1. This means that 13% of the water used for crop production in the world is not used for domestic consumption but for export (in virtual form). This is a conservative estimate because only a limited number of crops--although the most important ones--have been taken into account and because crop products (such as cotton clothes) have been excluded from the study. The countries with the largest net virtual water export are United States, Canada, Thailand, Argentina and India. The largest net import appears to be in Japan, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea, China and Indonesia.

From the author: The importance of cover crops as determinants of soil quality has long been recognized in agriculture, from their common use as green manure crops in the mid 1900s to the broader range of cover crop management strategies in cropping systems of the 1990s. The two principal elements regulating soil biological activity, and hence nutrient cycling, are carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). This regulatory effect is manifested primarily in resource quality, which is a term representing the chemical composition and physical characteristics of cover crops. The primary chemical factors determining the kinetics of residue decomposition and nutrient release are the C:N ratio and concentrations of lignin and other structural carbohydrates in plant tissues. With respect to N availability, grasses and legumes may serve different roles in cover crop-based production systems. Certain grass cover crops, most notably rye, have demonstrated a superior ability to scavenge for residual soil inorganic N compared to legumes. In contrast, legume cover crops such as crimson clover and hairy vetch have the ability to provide substantial amounts of biologically-fixed N to crops such as corn, cotton, and sorghum. However, improvements are needed in the synchrony of cover crop N release with principal crop demand for N to efficiently utilize this source of N. In this regard, future avenues for research should include a greater emphasis on plant breeding efforts to enhance the multipurpose roles of grass and legume cover crops, innovative management strategies utilizing cover crops, and the use of models to enhance our predictive capabilities of nutrient cycling efficiencies in cropping systems.

Book Description
Enigmatic for many years, cosmic rays are now known to be not rays at all, but particles, the nuclei of atoms, raining down continually on the earth, where they can be detected throughout the atmosphere and sometimes even thousands of feet underground. This book tells the long-running detective story behind the discovery and study of cosmic rays, a story that stretches from the early days of subatomic particle physics in the 1890s to the frontiers of high-energy astrophysics today.
Writing for the amateur scientist and the educated general reader, Michael Friedlander, a cosmic ray researcher, relates the history of cosmic ray science from its accidental discovery to its present status. He explains how cosmic rays are identified and how their energies are measured, then surveys current knowledge and theories of thin cosmic rain. The most thorough, up-to-date, and readable account of these intriguing phenomena, his book makes us party to the search into the nature, behavior, and origins of cosmic rays—and into the sources of their enormous energy, sometimes hundreds of millions times greater than the energy achievable in the most powerful earthbound particle accelerators. As this search led unexpectedly to the discovery of new particles such as the muon, pion, kaon, and hyperon, and as it reveals scenes of awesome violence in the cosmos and offers clues about black holes, supernovas, neutron stars, quasars, and neutrinos, we see clearly why cosmic rays remain central to an astonishingly diverse range of research studies on scales infinitesimally small and large.
Attractively illustrated, engagingly written, this is a fascinating inside look at a science at the center of our understanding of our universe.
Customer Reviews:
Thought provoking and readable.......2006-10-13
This book is (was) a real page turner. After less than a week it took its well deserved place among the really great books that I have read through this year. My physics background is rather meager personally, a single university class back in 2004. But nothing other than an interest in gaining a new insight into the cosmos is required to embark with this excellent read.
The insights into and the motivations of the early work in CR research was especially useful, and provided not only a fascinating historical perspective but the footing required to continue the journey through the book's short 225 pages. And all along the way the writing and development of ideas and concepts from the beginning are smooth, logical, and eminently readable. And inspiring! I have ordered more such books concerning physics.
Highest recommendations.
Fascinating Introduction to Cosmic Radiation.......2006-05-12
Michael Friedlander begins by quoting the introductory sentence from Cecil Powell's acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1950: "Coming out of space and incident on the high atmosphere, there is a thin rain of charged particles known as primary cosmic radiation."
A Thin Cosmic Rain - Particles from Outer Space is a well-written, intriguing introduction to cosmic rays (CR) that will appeal to readers with a moderate technical background. The later chapters were especially fascinating.
Friedlander's text involves relatively little mathematics, but is packed with helpful technical graphs and charts, particle track photos, instrumentation diagrams, and astronomical photographs.
The early chapters provide a historical context that may be largely familiar to many readers: the discovery of cathode rays (electrons), x-rays, and radioactive decay; the high altitude balloon flights by Victor Hess that resulted in the discovery of cosmic rays, "an extra-terrestrial source of penetrating radiation"; the advances in particle tracking technology in the twentieth century; and the impact of satellite borne instrumentation on CR research, including the discovery of the Van Allen belts.
The middle chapters - Particles from the Sun, Cosmic Rays in the Galaxy, The Energy Spectrum, and Ultra-High Energies - are a little more technical and may require some study as they lay the foundation for the final chapters. These chapters immediately engaged my interest and I found myself reading late into the evening. I would finish one chapter and immediately begin another.
The remaining chapters, especially Nuclear Clues, The Origin of Cosmic Rays, Cosmic Electrons and Gamma Rays, and Cosmic Neutrinos, are also quite good. Professor Friedlander addressed such topics as the nucleosynthesis model, the galactic leaky box model, calculations of CR travel paths, the CR budget for our galaxy, the spectral shape of supernova emissions, and synchrotron radiation.
My hardcover copy of A Thin Cosmic Rain was published by Harvard University Press, 2000. An earlier version, Cosmic Rays, was published in 1989.

Product Description
O.K., so we weren't able to convince Paul to include a good recipe for chicken-fried steak, but what he did serve up is a humorous but insightful account of effective basic powerlifting training. Don't look here if you think your next gains come from going triple-ply or your next win depends on shopping for the right federation. Do stop by though if you think a little horse sense is just what's called for when it comes to basic training for powerlifting. 96 pp.

It Was Ok.......2007-09-15
This book was defiantly an interesting read and a very unique one also. The language used was really quite different and at times made the storyline hard to understand. As for the workouts I would like to see why Kelso is Qualified to write a book in the first place. Some seemed ok and he had a few good tips but for the most part I don't know if he is all that good at making routines for serious powerlifters.
5 stars, but be wary.......2007-08-22
One of my all time favorite books on weightlifting, and without question, the most entertaining. If you think of this book as a philosophy and older-brother type advice book, you will get a lot out of it. It is NOT a how to book. Don't buy it thinking it will tell you how to perform lifts. Get another book, DVD or have somebody teach you. But, if you are a beginner, it will probably save you a lot of time, energy and money searching for effective routines and sound advice. If you're intermediate, there is a ton to learn from this book. If you're advanced, you can still learn, and have a jolly time laughing while you recognize all the charecters in the book (and likely, yourself). As someone who grew up in the age of "what do you bench?" being the only measure of a man's strength, I once was one of the "3/4 of all ironheads who spend 3/4's of their time on the bench". The book in a nutshell: Why do you want to train? Train for that purpose using simple effective excercises in reasonably set up routines. Enjoy the ride, reach your max potential, and don't get caught up in how it compares to others potential. I wish I had known about this book when I started lifting at 18. If I had purchased this, instead of that Men's Workout, who knows what I could have done! It's a classic.
For the hardhead in all of us.......2007-04-23
Hopefully, Kelso's wisdom won't sail over the reader's head like a frisbie. This is a short, and very funny read, strongly imbued with East Texas culture. Through stories (partly truth and partly fiction) of his days as a teacher, with a powerlifting club (the Wampus Cats), Kelso imparts some fundamental and sound truths about lifting weights. He offers different routines that would benefit most lifters depending on their varying goals. Although he doesn't get much into the technique of the exercises (this isn't a book for rank beginners), most of the routines are fairly simple--which is part of their value (assuming you want to get strong, that is). All laughing aside, Kelso obviously knows a few things about weightlifting. Along the way, he skewers a lot of goofy ideas--most deriving from the bodybuilding world. All in all, a very enjoyable book.
Different.......2006-07-21
This is a very different approach compared to what I'm used to in books on this subject. However, it is interesting. He does give some useful principles of training along with the stories. I particularly liked Kelso's Laws and how he conveys the idea that less can actually mean more. I wouldn't call this a be all end all book on strength training, but I don't think such a thing has ever been published. It is an entertaining read and it provides good training advice.
great book.......2005-08-10
this book was very entertaining. It's not only good to read but if you look at the training programs they are excellent and work for the non-steroids average person.

Book Description
At last, a guide that explains points of French grammar and structure simply, then clarifies each with concrete examples. The examples use the language of real-life situations. This new edition also makes difficult topics, like the difference between mood and tense, even easier to understand. Numerous fill-in-the-blank and other exercises with delayed answers help cut down the time it takes readers to gain proficiency and confidence communicating in French.
Customer Reviews:
Good review book.......2007-10-07
This book is a good, comprehensive review of grammar for intermediate and advanced French speakers; without prior knowledge of French, it might be a little hard to understand.
Excellent book for learning French grammar.......2007-01-29
Schaum's Outline is an excellent resource for learning grammar, one of the best I've used by far. I'd definitely recommend this as a resource to someone with at least a basic knowledge of French who wants to learn/improve their grammar.
I study French at university and use this book alongside my classes even though it isn't a set text. It's in-depth, and there are plenty of exercises with answers at the back of the book to hammer the new concepts in with. It is less of a reference book and more of a 'learning' book. I particularly liked the fact that I was learning vocabulary while completing the exercises in the book, as translations to example sentences are included.
Five stars for good layout, easy to understand explanations, and plenty of exercises with answers!
Well Organized.......2003-01-31
French grammar is hard to learn because although there are rules there are more exceptions than rules. This book does a great job of organizing things in a way to deal with all the expections. I especially like the way it presents the verbs. I own quite a few books on French grammar but the way this book groups the verbs is really much better. In terms of reviewing for a test (or for real life if you live in France) a book like this is essential, since most normal French text book are just too disorganized to find what you are looking for. Also it helps me to see all the rules about a certain topic in one place at one time. There are lots of exercises and the answers are in the back of the book to check yourself. Learning French grammar isn't ever going to be easy, but if you use this book it will be a lot easier than if you don't. Highly recommended.
Must have French learning companion.......2003-01-10
I don't have to describe the content in detail as the self-explanatory nature of the title. I studied French in L'Alliance Francais for some time. Their communicative approach almost makes me paralysed until I have this book. I can't imagine how a middle age person can learn a new language by merely listening and imitating the sound of teachers. On the contrary the grammatical approach in this book systematically illustrate every single bit of grammar detail for beginner (and intermediate level student). By reading and reviewing the explanation as well as practising the exercise, I can make a lot sense in French now. And I am not just fantizing it. The most exciting piece of news is that my progress is noticed by both my French teacher and my classmates. The mastering of basic is so satisfying and giving me advancement and enjoyment.
good for brushing up skills.......2002-09-05
I've worked through this book a couple of times now to brush up my French skills. It's excellent as a companion to a course, or just to practise. I would recommend it from the beginner, to the more advanced speaker who would like to refine their knowledge of the language.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful book..........2007-08-26
I studied French for many years. I can tell you much of the vocabulary in this book is very, very useful. I would fancy that an American student of French would benefit from this than a Canadian one, since they would be less likely to cover these terms in French courses on the high school in the U.S., and they wouldn't cover these everyday words in Canadian French university courses or American ones. You are dealing with terms related to cars, sports, travelling, hotel reservations etc.. I think that is useful, and you can't feel fluent without knowing these terms. I have a very old version of this book (1985), and I eventually want to get this newer one and compare.
Schaum's Outlines of French Vocabulary.......2007-03-17
I have given this product a hundred per cent rating because:
1)it is easy to understand and
2)it is comprehensive; it contains some topics, such as "L'enseignment" and "Au travail" that are rarely found in other books of its category.
I recommend this product to anyone who wants to learn French fast and easily.
Perfect for the intermediate learner.......2000-04-14
The first time I saw the book in a book shop, I didn't buy it because it looked like it was meant to be used by students cramming for exams. Maybe this is indeed the purpose of the book. I am an adult learner trying to learn French on my own. Since I don't have to pass any exams, I didn't think the book would be of any use to me. The second time I saw the book, I bought it anyway because it wasn't so expensive and I thought maybe I would pick up some useful vocabulary anyway. The book is surprisingly good. In fact, this is the best book I've found on vocabulary building. Its 46 chapters and the appendixes cover the words and phrases needed in a wide variety of situations. Maybe advanced students may find the book easy, but the level of difficulty is just about right for an intermediate learner like me.
I think it's good.......2000-01-23
I borrowed this book from a library but I think I need to spend a bit more time on it so I have decided to purchase my own copy. Basically it's different from the other vocab. books which it has exercises for you to do for each unit, and the materials are not very condensed, as with other vocab. books where they just categorize and throw a bunch of vocabs at you. Learning vocab needs drill and exercises, not pure memorization and I think this book does well in this area. I think if you really follow the book and work on all the exercises you will learn a lot. The only thing which made me take a star out of my rating is that the pictures and perhaps the layout of the book is a bit boring...ZZzzzz and outdated but actually the book wasn't very old at all.
I am also going to try out the grammar book and I hope that works well for me.
Fantastic, an art to itself.......1999-09-15
The book is a very good collection of French Words and is properly indexed with word lists. A must for any student learning french at any level.

Great quick reference.......2001-05-03
I have studied German for almost six months, and I can tell you that this little book allows me to comprehend the material that I am learning in class much more quickly. This book is perfect for beginners because a more complex grammar guide can confuse the first time learner. As I advance in my studies, I plan to upgrade to the complete editions.
