Book Description
This book has become one of the main statistical tools for the analysis of economic and financial data. Designed for both theoreticians and practitioners, this book provides a comprehensive treatment of GMM estimation and inference. All the main statistical results are discussed intuitively
and proved formally, and all the inference techniques are illustrated using empirical examples in macroeconomics and finance. This book is the first to provide an intuitive introduction to the method combined with a unified treatment of GMM statistical theory and a survey of recent important
developments in the field.

Book Description
The generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation has emerged over the past decade as providing a ready to use, flexible tool of application to a large number of econometric and economic models by relying on mild, plausible assumptions. The principal objective of this volume, the first devoted entirely to the GMM methodology, is to offer a complete and up to date presentation of the theory of GMM estimation as well as insights into the use of these methods in empirical studies. It is also designed to serve as a unified framework for teaching estimation theory in econometrics. Contributors to the volume include well-known authorities in the field based in North America, the UK/Europe, and Australia.
Customer Reviews:
A good book about a different way of estimation.......2000-05-09
This book focus in a different method of econometric estimation. The information about this method is quite difficult to understand. This is a excellent aproximation to start to known about the generalized method of moments. I want to remark this book allows us to find a fantastic way to discover this method.

Book Description
Now available for the first time in print are the new concepts and insights developed over the last three decades in the broad class of computational techniques called the methods of moment. Designed to serve as both a professional reference and graduate-level textbook, it will be useful in calculations for electromagnetic problems related to, among others, antennas, scattering microwaves, radars and imaging. Also included are problems for students, with the solutions available.
Customer Reviews:
used in practical problems.......2005-07-28
There is a problem with most standard texts on electromagnetism. Take Jackson's "Classical Electrodynamics" for example. Beautifully written, with elegant explanations of Maxwell's equations. But the problems given in such a text are often those with purely analytic solutions. These are certainly desirable. But the reality is that a lot of actual modelling of electromagnetic problems requires a computer to find the answer.
Different methods are useful. Of these, what is now called methods of moment, has emerged as one of the most powerful, as shown in this book. It is a technique that can be coded to tackle many integral equations that arise when you have a nontrivial geometry to consider.
The book is indeed rather specialised. But for some of you, it will save rummaging through research papers describing the method.

Description:
I develop a GMM-based framework for asymptotic inference to analyze data from surveys whose designs involve stratification and clustering. I set up the estimation problem, derive the appropriate asymptotic distribution theory as the number of clusters per stratum tends to infinity and compute asymptotic standard errors that are robust to sample-design effects. The analysis is then extended to nonparametric regression and to semiparametric estimation based on U-processes. Empirical illustrations are provided using consumption expenditure data from the complexly designed Indian national household survey.

Description:
Many studies have measured productivity change and efficiency when an undesirable output is a by-product. We flexibly treat the bad as a technology shifter of an input distance function and model a system of nonlinear equations subject to endogeneity. Theory dictates that we impose monotonicity on all inputs, outputs, and the bad. Since a Bayesian full-information likelihood approach can easily be misspecified, we utilize the Kim (J. Econometrics 107 (2002) 175) limited-information likelihood (LIL) derived by minimizing the entropy distance subject to the moment conditions from the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimator. This represents an extension of the Bayesian Method of Moments approach of Zellner and Chen (Macroeconom. Dyn. 5 (2001) 673), Zellner and Tobias (Int. Econom. Rev. 42 (2001) 121), and Zellner (in: Bayesian Analysis in Econometrics and Statistics: The Zellner View and Papers, Edward Elgar, Cheltenham, 1997; J. Econometrics 83 (1998) 185) which uses entropy maximization but does not incorporate a specific likelihood. Using Bayes' Theorem we combine traditional priors with the LIL, which has a mode at the standard multiple-equation GMM estimator, yielding a limited-information posterior distribution. We generalize the approach of Kim (J. Econometrics 107 (2002) 175) by incorporating an unknown covariance matrix in a Gibbs sampling framework and applying the methodology to nonlinear equations. This allows us to estimate shadow prices, technical efficiency, and productivity change for a panel of electric utilities, yielding results that differ substantially from those obtained using standard GMM.

Description:
This paper investigates determinants of local authorities' school expenditure. Hypotheses are derived from an expenditure demand model incorporating a school cost function. The empirical analysis exploits the panel structure of the dataset (for the 275 municipalities in Denmark over the period 1984-1996) by Generalized Method of Moments estimation of a dynamic model taking into account unobserved municipal-specific effects and possible endogeneity of the explanatory variables. Comparing with more standard estimations of the model, the results indicate that flexible estimation of a dynamic model controlling for unobserved municipal-specific effects is needed to avoid biased parameter estimates.

Description:
The New-Keynesian Phillips curve has recently become an important ingredient in monetary policy models. However, using limited information methods, the empirical support for the New-Keynesian Phillips curve appear to be mixed. This paper argues, by means of Monte Carlo simulations with a simple New-Keynesian sticky price model, that single equations methods, e.g. GMM, are likely to produce imprecise and biased estimates. Then, it is argued that estimating the model with full information maximum likelihood (FIML) is a useful way of obtaining better estimates. Finally, a version of the model used in the Monte Carlo simulations is estimated on U.S. data with FIML and although the pure forward-looking New-Keynesian Phillips curve is rejected, a version with both forward- and backward-looking components provides a reasonable approximation of U.S. inflation dynamics.

Description:
This paper is an extension of Ahn et al. (J. Econom. 101 (2001) 219) to allow a parametric function for time-varying coefficients of the individual effects. It provides a fixed-effect treatment of models like those proposed by Kumbhakar (J. Econom. 46 (1990) 201) and Battese and Coelli (J. Prod. Anal. 3 (1992) 153). We present a number of GMM estimators based on different sets of assumptions. Least squares has unusual properties: its consistency requires white noise errors, and given white noise errors it is less efficient than a GMM estimator. We apply this model to the measurement of the cost efficiency of Spanish savings banks.

Description:
Using a large panel of French manufacturing firms, this paper first reports tests for cash flow misspecification in structural Euler equation including or not leverage. If those tests are not rejected for both Euler equations, in a second step, a direct test on the omission of leverage in the Euler equation is reported. Three groups of ''financially healthy'' firms (high dividend payout, rising debt, high cash flow with respect to investment) exhibit (in some cases, small) risk premia which significantly increases with leverage. The neo-classical Euler equation is rejected on all groups of firms that have been investigated.

Book Description
Although much information is available about the trade provisions of NAFTA, little has been written on its provisions governing the international transfer of labor. For multinationals to remain competitive in the world market, they not only must access international markets for their products, but also the labor force to help them provide products. This book is a review of the immigration provisions of NAFTA and a step-by-step guide to help corporate management utilize them in their hiring practices. It also provides a reference source for legal material not easily found elsewhere, a description of the laws and the procedures they govern, a detailed description of how to complete INS forms, and checklists and suggestions to help do so. A unique guide for human resource executives and for their colleagues in the academic community interested in international business practices. Part I provides a brief overview of the standard immigration provisions that relate to all NAFTA visas. Part II discusses the legal requirements for business persons, treaty traders and investors, and intracompany transferees who enter the United States to conduct business. Part III describes in detail how the United States businesses can hire Canadian and Mexican professionals. Step-by-step descriptions note important differences in the procedures for professionals from Canada and Mexico. The authors describe what professionals qualify, how to complete INS form, obtain TN status for professional employees, apply for extensions, and change or end employment. One chapter is devoted to issues relating to the professional's family. Part IV discusses supplementary issues of the effect of strikes, employer legal obligations, and obtaining permanent residence. The Appendixes include the full text of chapter 16 of NAFTA, relevant laws, INS forms, and checklists and addresses that businesses will find useful for preparing and filing INS petitions.

Lacking lots of fruit tree information.......2002-08-04
There is a fair amount of information if you mostly want to grow certain nut trees (pecan, walnuts, hazelnuts) and citrus. I would have liked to see a lot more information on less common nut varieties (e.g., chestnuts, pine nuts, etc.) And there was little to no information on apple, pear, plum, etc. There are better books that cover fruit in general, and there are citrus specialty books if that's your main interest.
Very Informative!.......2002-07-21
This is a great read for a novice tree grower!
Basic informaion of growing fruit & nuts.......1999-08-22
This is a good book for those wanting very basic information on planting, propagating, caring for, & harvesting the fruit of the trees. More detailed information is given on citrus & exotic fruits as well as on a few nut varieties.
Several gadgets that can be used to make caring for the tree easier are also listed along with places to get them. There is also a small but delicious recipe section as well as planting & apple-tasting record templates.
There is great chart that explains how to organically fix or prevent many diseases & pests that can injure your trees. Another chart lists zones, chill hours, height, pollinator & susceptibilities for about 16 trees.
A bibliography & many associations where you can find information on growing specific trees are also included. Information on where to buy trees is as well as a list of tree museums is a nice bonus.

Book Description
This book is primarily concerned with turbulence in superfluid helium. Quantized vorticity has traditionally generated great interest among physicists, but there are now also important engineering applications such as liquid helium cooling of superconducting magnets. Presently much research is done on the relationship between superfluid turbulence and classical turbulence, as intense turbulence can be generated in liquid helium due to its small kinematic viscosity. There is also a close relationship between superfluid behaviour and quantized vorticity in liquid helium and in atomic Bose--Einstein condensates. Putting special emphasis on the interplay between the different disciplines involved, this readable account of recent research will appeal not only to established researchers but also to newcomers and graduate students wishing to enter the field.

From the backyard horses of their childhood, to the years of struggle as they worked their way to the top of one of the most demanding of horse sports, "Life in the Galloping Lane" is the story of how eventers Karen and David OConnor, winners of five Olympic medals between them, got their start. How they handled the highs and lows and the horses who shared their adventures, as well as insights into the OConnors' lives and training techniques makes this a fascinating and inspirational story.

Book Worth Reading.......2007-01-03
I went into this book with Mary's May 2nd review on my mind. While I can see her point, I was able to get past the holier than thou/humble part. This might be due to the fact that I was expecting it?? Anyway, I loved the book. Besides being an interesting read (and getting to ride all the fences and meet the who's who of the horse world through the O'Connors),It comforted me in the fact that I am not the only one who has experienced catasrophies in the horse world. I am grateful that the O'Connors shared the good stories along with the bad, and I am positive that their heart was in the right place in trying to share their experiences with the rest of us. They have truly earned their place in the horse world. Buy the book.
An Engaging Book.......2006-05-17
I read this book when it was first published, and I didn't post a review then, but I feel compelled to do so now, in response to the negative review from May 2, 2006.
Yes, okay, this isn't a great book. It's very much an "as told to" kind of effort. But it isn't a bad read, and I didn't get the sense at all that the O'Connors are talking down to the reader. Just the opposite, in fact. Perhaps it depends on where you're coming from. I still consider myself something of a new rider (I started in my 40s), and I get a lot of inspiration from the O'Connors. Maybe if you're a three- or four-star eventer, you'll find this book a yawn, but I thought it was interesting, and I knew quite a bit about the O'Connors before I bought it. So there!
Happy reading--and riding!
an amazing couple made dull through writing.......2006-05-03
This book reads like a series of junior high "who is your hero" essays. Karen and David are an incredible duo and a force in the equestrian world, but their story would have been better told by a biographer. The writing is peppered with "i was like:" and unexplained comments tossed out about the O'Connor family, and generally runs in a: this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened etc. The authors come off as simultaniously humble and holier-than-thou. All in all, this book is very awkward to read and makes it difficult to care for the couple with their constant talk about how it is their duty to associate with us mere mortals who look up to them. As if, in their attempts to be more accessible, they only place themselves further away. For a much more engaging read, i recommend "In Service to the Horse", of which the O'Connors are major players in the cast, and far more interesting than in this attempt.
Life in the Galloping Lane.......2005-02-05
I thought this book was awesome! It started out at the age of 11 for both Karen and David. David and his Mother and Brother went on a trip across the world when he was 11, on horseback! They traveled with sleeping bags and food along the way they stop at people homes. Most people insisted that they stay inside but they preferred the barn. Along the way David and his mom's horses went lame and two owners of horse let them use their while they housed the lame ones and sent them back when the trip was over! David states that ways the turning point in his career because he really got to know horses! When Karen turned 11 her parents bought her first horse. Many people would refer to it as a push button pony because it did everything she had asked it to. So as she rode different ponies it became a challenge for her. Later Karen and David met each other at horse shows. They begin to date later on. One show Karen had a bad day and did not do very well and they decided to break up. They both continued to show horses and saw each other at shows but did not talk to each other. When they were on the Olympic team training in England the started dating. Later they were at a party in Ireland and one of there friends also named Karen stood up and said now would be the perfect time to celebrate the engagement Karen Lende and David O'Connor.(At the time they were not engaged yet)So David ask Karen to marry him she said I will think about it. So David went to another lady there and took her hand and Karen said yes. Now they are married and Both Olympian horseback riders. They have done many things to make there barn sucssful both of there staff work for them and made them into a tema called the OCET O'Connor equestrian team. They treat all there staff as a team instead of there workers. This was one of there main goals when they got married for there barn to be successful and everyone to get along and they have worked very hard to accomplish it.

ECELLENT BOOK!.......2007-04-11
GOOD BOOK, I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ONE ON DVD, PLUS SALHA ALSO
Mumtaaz.......2006-11-23
I think it's an excellent book for beginners. The only problem is the transliteration for the tough Arabic letters (Ayn, Ghayn, Khaa, Ha). Overall it's a solid building block.
Good place to start.......2006-07-10
This is a good beginners book. If you already know the alphabet and want to incorporate some simple vocabularly this is for you.
It helps if you can already read the Arabic script, but its not necessary as the book gives the transliteration too.
I found it most useful for teaching children. The flash cards and simple exercises keep it interesting.
Works extremely well re script - not so well re sound.......2005-12-17
Original review (prior to formal Arabic instruction): This book was my "ice-breaker" to learning Arabic, for personal interest in Christian-Muslim dialogue, and professional interest in Islamic world view(s). The key to this book's exceptional utility is the ease of associating sound patterns of phonetic transliteration of words for everyday objects (household items, clothing articles, etc.) with the written patterns of Arabic characters. Although I totally lacked familiarity with the Arabic alphabet, the correspondence between "sound and sight" was remarkably easy to decipher, granted the basic level of vocabulary. While I don't expect more advanced vocabulary or grammar to be nearly so easy, the book accomplishes its objective: Removing the intimidation of a completely unfamiliar alphabet. Well done!
As an aside, I've found that the ability to read music (a skill I've only recently acquired) helps significantly. It's a very short "leap" from reading pitches represented by non-Roman characters (musical notes) to reading phonemes represented by a non-Roman alphabet.
Addendum following instruction: Since writing the above review, I've completed a semester in beginning Arabic, and I now have a mild-to-moderate criticism of the book. There are basic sounds and sound patterns that simply cannot be represented by English phoneticisms, period. So for the purpose of learning the *sounds* represented by Arabic *script*, English phoneticisms are misleading in some cases, and flat out wrong in others.
For those already familiar with Arabic sounds, phoneticisms or transliterations are merely "codes" rather than representations. Unfortunately, this book gives the (often false) impression of *representing* the sounds. Readers who get a false sense of confidence in mispronunciations learned from this book (as I did) may be discouraged when they first encounter the difficulties of correct pronunciation. That's where my music reading analogy falls apart: In music training you actually hear the notes represented by the symbols, whereas the edition of this book that I reviewed did not include a CD.
The book still works very well re demystifing Arabic *script*, but the apparent representations of Arabic *sounds* should be taken with a grain of salt. For the English speaker, many Arabic sounds and ways of verbally connecting sounds are totally unfamiliar. To learn to properly pronounce Arabic on even the most basic level, inter-personal instruction is an absolute must. Recordings are good supplements for "ear training," but they cannot provide the correction essential for properly *verbalizing* Arabic sounds.
As an example of why this correction is essential, well into my first semester of very exacting instruction, I could detect the anglicized mispronunciations of acquaintances who've "picked up" Arabic overseas without benefit of intensive instruction. In contrast, on the first day of my second semester, my new teacher, a native *Saudi* Arab speaker, took me aside and remarked on the correctness of my pronunciation. Interestingly, my first teacher was a native *Sudanese* Arab speaker, indicating that modern standard Arabic really is just that - a standardized way of speaking as well as writing across nationalities.

The title is only half true. Yes, this will give you your first 100 words in Arabic, with neat flashcards and some good exercises. For the price it is reasonable, although 100 words is really not much (even if you've never studied French or Spanish, for example, you probably know well over 100 words in each).
On the other side, this book will not teach you the Arabic script. That is OK, since it provides both Arabic and transliterated Arabic on the flashcards. It gives you a chart of Arabic letters and a page with general principles of joining letters. You cannot reasonably go from that to unraveling the Arabic writing. That part of the title should be cut out. You need a book like Awde's "The Arabic Alphabet" a cheap and useful guide for learning the alphabet.

Book Description
In this latest episode, Char and a small band of loyal soldiers go on a reconnaissance mission to gain information on the Federation's new and powerful Mobile Suit, the Gundam. Char is interrupted by Sayla Mass, with whom he shares a mysterious past. Will Char and company escape unscathed? And as Earth's atmosphere rapidly approaches, who will face the terrifying prospect of attempting to enter it? Animerica's "Best of the Best" issue chose Yasuhiko as the "animator most deserving of wider recognition."

Awesome beginning to an awesome variation on the OYW.......2003-09-29
For those who've seen the original Gundam 0079 TV series, the character personalities, mecha designs and plot synopses differ from it, even if it's just a little bit. Each issue of the manga probably translates into about 1 episode or so of the show, so expect to see about 40-50 issues at the rate Japan's Gundam Ace Magazine is covering it, along with Viz's great translation to English. Once you get the right-to-left reading down, you'll have no trouble understanding it. This issue especially differs from the first episode for a few key reasons, but I'll leave them up to you to notice so as not to spoil anything. I recommend this to anyone looking to get into Gundam manga, the UC timeline, or Gundam in general.
A hard story given a modern edge..........2002-10-15
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's mecha and artistic skills work very, very well for this re-telling of the first Gundam story. The Origin is a version of the events that's been tweaked a bit, expanded in some really cool ways (we get to see a fight between a Gundam prototype piloted by an expert, among other things) and thoroughly modernized. The mecha and people still have that 70s Disco-Afro Glow, but the artistic style of the book is much more realistic, with a lot of moody shadows, more detail on the mecha and a weight of credibility slathered over all of the mechanical elements. If you've read the story before, then you won't find much that is new, but Yas' complex, rich illustrations and the modernized mecha designs are worth the cost of the book.
