Book Description

One of the hottest fields in contemporary macroeconomics, economic growth is both fascinating to theorists and critically important to policy makers. In Introduction to Economic Growth—the only text in the field designed specifically for advanced undergraduates—Charles I. Jones explains in clear, direct language how economists have come to understand the long-run growth of economies. Beginning with empirical evidence—how rich are the rich countries, how poor are the poor, and how fast do the rich and poor countries grow? —Professor Jones then presents the major theories of economic growth, from the Nobel Prize-winning work of Robert Solow to the new growth theory that has ignited the field in recent years.

5 out of 5 stars Delivers on the promise.......2003-02-18

This book delivers on its promise of being a textbook on economic growth theory for undergraduates. It is not easy (as economic growth is not), but it is definitely within the grasp of economics undergraduate with knowledge of basic economic principles. It also provides sufficient advance material in the second half of the book to stimulate further study into economic growth. However, beware that this is not a book about policy prescriptions for economic growth, it is about the theoretical framework to understand it (necessary, but not sufficient for policy prescriptions).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about the economic growth theory........2001-05-19

This is a excellent book about the economic growth theory. I've read excellent books as "Economic Growth" by R. Barro, "Advanced Macroeconomics" by David Romer and "Endogenous Growth Theory" by Philippe Aghion, the principal problem is the level, if you don't have notions about economic growth theory, you'll have problems to understand. Charles I. Jones wrote a excellent introduction about all the modern economic growth theory. I recommend this book amply.

5 out of 5 stars A thorough introduction.......2000-07-06

Since most intermediate-level macroeconomics textbooks - probably because of lack of space - usually decide to devote no more than a chapter or two to what is often considered to be the most important topic in economics, Jones' book serves as a very neat introduction to the field. Obviously, noone should expect to see the rigour one can find in advanced treatments, but - without doubt - it is easier to jump to advanced treatments if you see the intuitive explanation first. I could say this is one of the best textbooks I had a chance to read.

4 out of 5 stars Une théorie générale de la croissance.......1999-11-24

4 out of 5 stars Very good as an undergraduate text in the subject.......1999-09-02

The book presents the subject in a very friendly way; great for a first glance to the subject. However, I have to agree that it turns out to be a little too basic as one approaches the chapters on new growth and other alternative theories.

        Book Description

What is development? And what does it take to make development sustainable? How can we measure and compare levels of development for different countries? The author of Beyond Economic Growth challenges readers to find their own answers to these complex questions by analyzing and synthesizing information on a range of critical and interrelated development issues: population growth, economic growth, equity, poverty, hunger, education, health, industrialization, privatization, trade, foreign investment, international aid, climate change, the Millennium Development Goals, and more.

Why is world population growing faster than ever before?
Will poor country economies catch up with the rich?
Can poor countries break the vicious circle of poverty and hunger?
How does a country's economic position affect its education needs?
How are health risks changing in different parts of the world?
Will the North-South cooperation help prevent global climate change?
How does government corruption influence national development?

The book, which draws on recent World Bank data, is written for young people, teachers, students, and others interested in learning more about global development.

This completely revised and expanded second edition of Beyond Economic Growth includes new sections on:

        global hunger
        HIV/AIDS
        international migration,
        government corruption, and
        the Millennium Development Goals.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Introduction is an understatement.......2005-08-21

This book gives a very quick introduction to sustainable development and economic principals. There are short colorful chapters on GDP/GNP as a measure of welfare, pollution levels in different countries, foreign investment, etc. but it simply introduces the concepts and mentions why they are important. There is very little in depth discussion.

The second half of the book contains tables of data collected by the World Bank on foreign aid, immigration, pollution/air quality, population growth, GNP per capita, and so on.

Buy this book for the data, and if you are new to the economics of sustainable development. Don't buy it if you want to do any research or reporting of your own.

                    Book Description

As a new millennium approaches, many politicians, commentators, academics, management gurus and business people have been increasingly casting their gaze towards Asia in the belief that the 'Pacific Age' is also beckoning.
The region's dynamism is seen as rooted in particular managerial practices, such as kaizen and Total Quality Management; in state intervention; or in cultural factors, notably Confucianism. An integral ingredient to all these factors is the management of 'human resources', with the 'human touch' seen to proffer key advantages in an era of globalization, market flux, competition by quality and service, and rapid transference of technologies. Within the fashionable icon of human resource management, several debatable assumptions are sometimes made and often more heat than light has been shed. HRM often suffers from a selectivity tendency and ad hoc approach, which misses the historical, paradoxical and often incoherent, incompatible and inconsistent nature of the subject. This volume reduces this myopia by adding to our knowledge of HRM and the rich milieu within which it operates.

Explosive economic and social changes in the Asia Pacific region have meant that much of what we know about the area is outdated. This book addresses this and looks at the "human resource period" with detailed analysis, discussion and predictions for the future. Focusing on the areas of China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand the book explores the reasons behind changes and whether they indicate movement of convergence or divergence, the key issues for management and the implications for theory development.
This is the latest research available on this subject. A must for managers, researchers and those teaching undergraduate or postgraduate courses, as well as those interested in international business, sociology and employee relations.

Roger Tory Peterson, one of America's pre-eminent artist-naturalists and arguably the inventor of the field guide, made people love birds like no one since John James Audubon. A Field Guide to the Birds, first published in 1934, remains his most famous and wonderful work. The manual stood instantly apart from the dichotomous keys zoologists used to identify species, since Peterson grouped paintings of related species together and used arrows to, as he explained, "pinpoint the key field marks." This way, watchers could spot birds from a distance and avoid, as he archly put it, "the bird-in-hand characters that the early collectors relied on." Birders could use the guide where they needed it most--outdoors--on living birds flitting quickly by. In addition to detailed illustrations, Peterson offers charming (and useful) descriptions of each avian citizen's appearance, behavior, voice, and range. There is also priceless anecdotal information, based on decades of field experience, as in this description of the common house sparrow (Passer domesticus): "Familiar to everyone. Sooty city birds often bear little resemblance to clean country males with the black throat, white cheeks, chestnut nape." His transliterations of song are just as quietly marvelous. For instance, Pluvialis squatarola, or the black-bellied plover, makes things clear with "a plaintive slurred whistle, tlee-oo-eee or whee-er-ee (middle note lower)."

Peterson's original handbook covered birds of Eastern North America, and has since been followed by guides to Western birds, animal tracks, butterflies, and many other natural wonders. He and his team updated "The Birders' Bible" as new species were discovered and classifications modified. Generations of enthusiastic watchers owe Peterson a debt of gratitude for making ornithology accessible. But equally important, he showed scientists that finding beauty in living animals, and not just cataloging the measurements of dead ones, was crucial. Roger Tory Peterson died in 1996. He will be remembered as a passionate naturalist, a keen observer of living things, and a gifted artist and teacher. --Therese Littleton

Now Roger Tory Peterson's classic Field Guide to Eastern Birds has been reissued in a larger format specially produced for those who don't want to take their reading glasses into the field. Peterson's treasured illustrations have been reproduced in beautiful color. Species descriptions include only the most important identification elements -- size, voice, and habitat -- in large, easy-to-read type. Color range maps, have been updated specifically for this book.

Roger Tory Peterson's original text has been revised and updated by Virginia Peterson, who worked closely with her husband and created the maps for the fourth edition of the Field Guide to Eastern Birds; Noble Proctor, a professor of biology who was a close friend of Roger Tory Peterson's and led natural history tours for twenty-five years; and Pete Dunne, vice president of the New Jersey Audubon Society and director of the Cape May Bird Observatory, as well as the author of many books on birding. The maps have been updated by Virginia Peterson and Paul Lehman, past editor of Birding magazine and a bird tour leader who has traveled extensively around North America studying bird distribution and identification and has written many articles on these subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Peterson Field Guides: Eastern Bird, Large Format Edition.......2007-07-27

This easy on the eyes large format edition is a great book for all ages and levels of bird watching. The soft cover makes it light to handle or take with you in the field. The large format makes identifying birds much easier and quicker. Well layed out and practical.

It took almost 3 weeks to get this item. Very disappointed in comparison to other items I've ordered through Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Not your father's Peterson Guide.......2007-01-13

I mistakenly thought that the large print version would be the same as my trusted old Peterson Guide, just in large print. Nope! The format is entirely different and greatly abbreviated. It's misleading to title this text the same as the original. This may be a nice guide for a novice bird watcher for bird feeder identification. I gave my copy away to a shut-in with minimal bird identifying experience.

                          1 out of 5 stars Misrepresentation .......2006-06-25

This book was bundled with another bird book, and the offer appeared directly under the Peterson Field Guide book, which I thought I was ordering. It was not very obvious in the small thumbnail image and description that it was a child's coloring book. I did not get what I wanted and have since returned it.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the older birder.......2006-01-30

I purchased this book for my mother, who is in her 70s. She recently started birding so this was her first field guide-easy to read, large pictures make identification very easy for the beginning birder of any age.

From an Australian point of view, we have many people telling us how we need to improve our junior coaching techniques. I have spent many months and a considerable amount of money looking for a resource like this.
It seems to meet the guidelines of everything the commentators and experts in our country recommend is taught to our children and the Dutch have had obvious success.

When they teach young players to play soccer, the Dutch focus on TIC (Technique, Insight and Communication). This book focuses on the Insight players need to develop to understand how to play the game, to understand what is happening on the pitch. An outstanding resource. Very highly recommended...

This book reads a lot like shorthand. Very short, clear descriptions. It has some very good diagrams and after awhile it begins to make a lot of sense. Be prepared to keep returning to it as a resource book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Book for Anyone Who Loves Books.......2007-08-28

I came to this wonderful book from a very circuitous pathway: I had gone on Barnes & Noble's website to see if they offered classes in their "online university." I am sorry to report that they have done away with the university concept, but they now sponsor chat boards about different book topics. Looking around, I wandered into the one on "Collecting Books." Although I was familiar with the idea that first editions can be valuable, I really know nothing about collecting books for fun or profit. While on the site, I asked the moderator if he could suggest any beginner's books to collecting, and this is the one he mentioned. (Of course, I purchased the book from Amazon.com!)

What a treasure trove of information. Ian Ellis's "Book Finds" is a great resource, even if you never collect or attempt to sell a single book. His breadth of knowledge about books is astounding, and he highlights so many authors in discussing his topic that, as a booklover, you are sure to find some interesting information or new authors here.

Ellis dispels the idea that collecting books means wading through dusty old volumes. In fact, for the average collector, many of those will be out of their price range. However, what is eminently collectible are "modern firsts," books written within the average reader's lifetime that have value, are likely to maintain or increase that value, and can provide a surprising new way to make money from books. Of course, to do that, an individual must have a good working background in the industry to know what to look for, what has value, and what problems a book may have that will make it virtually worthless to the collector market.

This book offers up an excellent starting point for your journey to collecting, and Ellis devotes an entire chapter to other resources by which to expand your book knowledge. He covers first editions and reader's copies, trends in buying and selling, mistakes that are easy to make (and avoid), and a glossary of commonly used terms in the business. He gives an insider's view of "scouting" as a career, but most of all, he allows his love of books to shine through. I highly recommend this book to any reader, whether you become a collector or not. You will have a much deeper appreciation of those magical objects called "books."

Since we are very new at assessing books it has been very helpful in showing us what to look for without being overly complex. A good resource.

Book is well-written and easy for the lay person to understand. It has helped me a great deal in learning what is and what is not a rare book. Great for amateur collectors such as I.

5 out of 5 stars Worth It's Weight In Gold!!!.......2007-03-07

Mon Dieu! I may be sitting on a gold mine and didn't even know it until I read this book. I don't consider myself a 'book collector' (that sounds so stuffy!), but rather a total bookaholic book slut. I didn't know how to recognize a 'first edition' from a black cat until I read this book (and let me tell you, some publishers are sneaky and don't print the words 'first edition' on the copyright page---there's a secret code that you'll find out if you read this book). I decided to peruse my books and discovered that I own 40 or more first edititons, many collectible. I promptly gave them the special attention and care they so rightly deserve.

If you love and own books, then you NEED to read this little treasure of a tome. You'll learn how books are born (from ideas to printing) and how to know which books are keepers. I shudder to think how many first editions I may have unwittingly given away!
