Treasury of ideas for personal growth & colleague groups.......2007-07-27
This book is a treasure trove of activities suitable for many types of group. It is divided by tabs into Values Clarification, Personal Awareness, Group Process, Feedback, Communication, and a miscellaneous section (which touches on conflict & resolution, leadership styles, and more).
The activities are clearly defined, rich in possibilities as written, and easy to modify for the leader's individual purposes in a given group. Dyad activities, group discussion, personal reflection are all included. Some use props (photos, movies, quotes) and others require no materials. The activities are diverse and multi-faceted.
Although the group leader will need to exercise judgment about which activities are appropriate for a given group, Pfeiffer offers suggestions about type and level of the group in a section labeled "group size." More than half of the activities are designed for groups where members already know each other and/or have been working together for some time. Some activities could easily be used in any group type; others are specifically suited to work situations or personal growth groups. Large and small group activities are included.
If you are a leader seeking icebreakers for new groups, this would not be your ideal book, although some activities could be adapted to serve as icebreakers.
Overall this book is thorough, well organized, and well worth the investment as a source of activities and ideas.

Difficult to understand, but essential to read.......2006-12-10
The authors are distinguished scientists holding advanced degrees in chemistry, materials science, and geochemistry. This book clearly reflects that, and if you've not studied any of these sciences, a primer is in order. They thoroughly rebut Miller's infamous experiment which supposedly proved life can come from nonliving matter. This book explores the hypothesis of chemical evolution and what conditions would be required, as well as what conditions probably were like on the Earth prior to sentient life developing. Darwin's point about wanting a "warm little pond" in which evolution would take place is delved into in the chapter "The Myth of the Prebiotic Soup." Whether you believe in evolution, creation, or creationism, this book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in science.
A Classic, yet Accessible Scientific Treatise on the Deficiencies of Chemical Evolution.......2006-06-22
A seminal work for the theory of intelligent design, this book provides a scientific critique of the prevailing paradigmatic theories of chemical evolution. The authors include Discovery fellows Charles Thaxton and Walter Bradley, and they conclude that the prebiotic soup from which the first cell supposedly arose is a myth. The Miller-Urey experiments employed an unrealistic gas mixture, and there is no geological evidence for its existence in Earth's distant past. The "soup" faces a myriad of other problems, such as inevitable rapid destruction at the hands of radiation.
The authors also take aim at the dominant paradigm for chemical evolution using technical arguments from thermodynamics. The second law of thermodynamics has been misused by creationists who failed to treat the fact that Earth is an open system. But Thaxton, Bradley, and Olsen takes this point into account as they argue that thermodynamics is eminently applicable to assessing whether unguided chemical reactions can organize matter into life. Their conclusion is that natural laws cannot account for the encoded "specified complexity" inherent in biomolecules.
The epilogue looks forward to other possible explanations for the origin of life. The book was published in 1984 when the United States was immersed in debate over Genesis-based creationism. Yet these authors take a different approach that is ahead of its time. They recognize that science requires an observation-based understanding of cause-and-effect relationships. Thus they set aside biblical arguments and focus instead on observations about the natural world and intelligence. After demonstrating that various undirected causes lack the power to produce complex information, they note, "We have observational evidence in the present that intelligent investigators can (and do) build contrivances to channel energy down nonrandom chemical pathways to bring about some complex chemical synthesis, even gene building" (pg. 211). The authors then pose a simple question: "May not the principle of uniformity suggest that DNA had an intelligent cause at the beginning?" (pg. 211)
tom sullivan proves his opponent's point...........2006-03-13
first of all, this is a very well written book, it presents its points well and does a very good job of defending its critics... however, the writing and explanations could have been better, but i gave this book five stars in order to make up for the 'idiocy' of tom sullivan
i did not buy this book from amazon, but looking at other's reviews helps me understand other people's viewpoints... to be honest mr. sullivan's review was rather amusing, especially his example of the beethoven dog... while he accused creationism of this gap, i personally feel it is much more fitting for evolution, considering the fact that we are presented with amino acids, then complex organisms (such as ourselves) and then told that we came from those amino acids with some transfer point inbetween... which is exactly what is missing from the whole chain... and could be just as easily be interpreted as the fact that the dog never plays on the piano... so thank you mr. sullivan for providing an excellent illustration of the flaws within evolution
overall, get this book if you want an in-depth and unbiased understanding of the differences between evolution and creationism
The previous review must be bogus........2005-12-13
He writes and I quote, "Only a moron would accept that as "proof," and yet ID-iot Christians are more than happy to accept exactly that kind of "proof" from ID-iotic films like this".
Obviously this man thinks it's a film rather than a book, so much for reading it and a fair critical review.
Long on Details.......2005-12-09
For 15 years, this book has been the first that I recommend for colleagues and friends wishing to evaluate the validity of evolution. Its value is that it focuses in ample detail on just one single, critical step in evolution: getting from non-life to life. The book describes work by 4 researchers who attempted to find the mechanism that led to the evolution of the first proto-cell. The authors detail their attempts to find this mechanism that would work against the known processes which the first step in biological evolution would have had to surmount (such as entropy). Each researcher brought a different expertise to the work, so the book is able to bring a number of perspectives to bear on this one relatively narrow issue.
This is not a book for individuals with merely secondary-school maths, biology or chemistry knowledge. The further one has studied in those disciplines (university, post-graduate), the better able he will be to appreciate the research.

Book Description
Legendary St. Louis promoter Sam Muchnick and the magical television wrestling show broadcast from the opulent Chase Hotel from 1959 to 1983 are captured in this informative, amusing, and sometimes poignant story of one of wrestling's greatest eras. The high-class establishment of the Chase Hotel and the rough-and-tumble world of professional wrestling made strange bedfellows, but they worked together to produce an addicting spectacle under the direction of Muchnick. Ric Flair, "King Kong" Brody, and Andre the Giant are just some of the many characters who are featured in the engrossing, funny, and touching tales. Any fan of pro wrestling will delight in the history, humor, and uniqueness of Sam Muchnick and the Chase.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-06-27
Sam Muchnick was my uncle, and I grew up with "Wrestling at the Chase" and the Kiel Auditorium bouts, yet this book taught me so much about my uncle's work and interesting facts about the era and the wrestlers I watched. Well-written, and a real page-turner. Wonderful!!!
Bruiser Brody and more.......2007-01-19
Sam Muchnick was without a doubt one of the best promoters ever! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and really loved all the stories. From Dick Murdoch describing Kevin Von Erich's debut and saying he wanted to rip off his head to talking about the various announcers. It is easy to forget that Joe Garagiola used to announce wrestling and even easier to forget that his brother did for several years. I grew up in the northeast which all you got to see over there was WWWF and you could only read about the NWA and Muchnick territory in wrestling magazines. This is a must for anyone who grew up watching wrestling in the 60's and 70's.
Totally awesome book on St. Louis wrestling!.......2006-12-03
This is an awesome book for any casual fan or pro wrestling historian on pro wrestling in St. Louis during the height of the National Wrestling Alliance's power. I really enjoyed the stories about Sam Muchnick and Bruiser Brody (King Kong Brody in St. Louis). I really want to get the Brody biography when it comes out in 2007. Totally worth purchasing!
A Trip Down Memory Lane.......2006-04-01
I grew up watching "Wrestling at the Chase" as a kid- Sunday morning meant time in front of the TV watching King Kong Brody, Flair, Race and all the other wrestling greats. This book gives unbelievable insight into the world of wrestling throughout the past several decades- A good read with some great stories!!
Paints a great picture of an era gone by.......2006-01-31
Larry Matysik's book offers great insight into the St. Louis wrestling scence in a well written, organized book (which is not always the case with pro wrestling books). Larry was a sports reporter, and it shines through in his writing. Having grown up with the Mid-Atlantic territory in Virginia, I had never witnessed Wrestling at the Chase, nor was I aware of its importance in the NWA. Reading Larry's book and seeing his DVD's changed all that. There were a lot of familiar faces (Flair, Brody, Von Raschke), and some new (Crusher Blackwell, a young Ted Dibiase before he moved on to the UWF and WWF, Bulldog Bob Brown). It's a real treat to read his anecdotes then watch them on video. If you're a fan of the old NWA, this book is well worth your while to pick up. ECW Press has churned out some great wrestling books in the last year or two, including The Greatest Tag-Teams, Terry Funk's autobiography, and Harley Race's autobiography. This one is near the top of the heap. Highly recommended for fans of late 70's and 80's NWA wrestling, as well as those curious about wrestling history.
Larry Matysik is now at work on a King Kong (Bruiser) Brody biography which should be out this year.

I also learnt "don't talk with your month full' from this book. Language plus culture.
101 American English Idioms: Understanding ..........2005-09-07
This book it really helps a lot people like me that have English as a second language.
It is now easier for me to communicate with american people.
A great book for ESL children.......2004-09-20
This book includes 101 popular American English idioms along with an illustration for each that children will find amusing. Note that the illustrations are purely for amusement rather than providing visual explanations of the idiom. Some of the idioms are more popular than others but overall a good selection has been made. Each idiom is explained in detail and with example sentences and a larger context.
Older readers will want to spend their money on a more comprehensive idiom dictionary, but this is perfect for children and those who enjoy reading to them. My only criticism would be that the idioms are presented in context and the examples are written at a higher level of English than what the overall genre seems to suggest would be appropriate. This book could be used with older/more advanced learners because of this, but the publisher seems to have aimed a little wide.
Effective and Fun!.......2004-07-28
I use 101 American English Idioms with my students. The idioms are common, and I feel the illustrations add a generous element of fun to a very effective book. Because my students need to understand spoken English, I also use Whaddaya Say, 2nd Edition, to help them accurately hear natural spoken English.

Celebrated outdoorsman-turned-author Gary Paulsen relates his lifelong romance with open water to teen readers with this short and salty memoir, Caught by the Sea: My Life on Boats. Paulsen packs adventure into every sentence of this 100-page book. He grabs our attention within the first few pages with a shocking childhood memory of watching from the saftey of a troopship as sharks attacked plane-wreck victims. Strangely, this doesn't scare Paulsen off as much as it challenges him to conquer the ocean's power. He remembers disastrous first sailing attempts, unsteady vessels, and frightening tropical storms that reminded him of his frail mortality. Still, he fondly recalls that every boat he ever knew had valuable lessons to impart: "To show me the sea. To show me myself. And never, ever look back." Though some of the stories are told out of context, and he often takes for granted that his audience has some background knowledge of shipboard vocabulary, fans of Paulsen's wildly popular survivor tales will no doubt be caught by this one as well. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
Another such wave could easily be the end of us. I had to do something, fix something, save the boat, save myself.
But what?
Gary Paulsen takes readers along on his maiden voyage, proving that ignorance can be bliss. Also really stupid and incredibly dangerous. He tells of boats that have owned him—good, bad, and beloved—and how they got him through terrifying storms that he survived by sheer luck. His spare prose conjures up shark surprises and killer waves as well as moonlight on the sea, and makes readers feel what it’s like to sail under the stars or to lie at anchor in a tropical lagoon where dolphins leap, bathed in silver. Falling in love with the ocean set Gary Paulsen on a lifelong learning curve and readers will understand why his passion has lasted to this day.
From the Hardcover edition.

Review.......2007-03-26
The book Caught By The Sea by Gary Paulson is a pretty good book. The book is about when Gary Paulson, the author, gets into sail boating and the troubles that he has with the weather and the quality of his boats that he owns. I recommend this book to any one who likes sailboats and people who like stories about the sea. Also I recommend this book to people who like all of Gary Paulson's other books. Also this book kind of tells you what sailing is like and about.
Caught by the sea.......2007-03-10
Caught By The Sea
In my own opinion this book is a good read but has many other problems. An example of a problem is that in the story there are certain parts that lie to you, for example it says, "Just then I died". Of course this is not true otherwise the story would end in an instant. This book is a short read and is also kind of hard to imagine unless you can keep up with a really fast book.
This book is about a young boy who grew up to serve into the military. He
soon left because of his love of the sea. The only problem is that he didn't know how to sail very well. With practice and experience he grew up to love sailing and he would get more and more better boats in time. Later as he would enter more rapid waters he would move on to the ocean, where there is bigger waves and tons of storms that are very dangerous.
I don't recommend this book unless you are a good reader who can adapt and take in a lot of information fast and be able to understand it. This book might be a book you would like to share if you yourself like to sail boats to learn the tails of a single sailor taking on the open sea.
Caught by Sea .......2005-10-05
Caught by the Sea written by Shahd El-Khatib
Gary Paulsen
In Gary Paulsen's book he learns to keep trying and never give up on your dream. I choose this book for many reasons for the first reason I love to read books about journeys on sea and of all the tough obstacle courses they have to go through. I have read another book by Gary Paulsen, Hatchet, I really enjoyed this book and I love how Gary adds great detail that makes you feel you are right their with the character. He also uses great descriptive words that help you see the pictures in your head. Gary has always wanted to own a boat and by wanting this he has to learn about the sea and how to sail.
Though Gary has never sailed a boat before he decides to buy his own boat and go on an adventure. By experimenting and trying everything on the boat he learns what many things on the boat do. When having a boat, the boat is not the most important thing to know about, you have to learn about the sea and winds. When sailing Gary notices the water gets very still but without knowledge he just thinks the water has calmed down but he was wrong, it was a big sign that a huge storm was coming. Gary is faced with a huge storm and has to try his best to survive it.
Every experience or accident on the boat really helped Gary out. He gets to learn from his mistakes and never does them again. When he got in the storm he notices that next time he should pull up on his sails and stay calm. Gary also should be equipped with all the materials he needs during a storm, and also to learn how to sail a boat. When buying his boat Gary knows that a lot of people try to trick you into buying a very bad boat for a high price, Gary figures out he has to check the boats very carefully.
"Another such wave could easily be the end of us. I had to do something, fix something, save the boat, save myself. But what"?. This statement shows you how Gary felt during the storm he didn't feel confident that he would make it alive. "That if you take a plank of wood from the ship it would sink". When shopping for boats Gary is faced with thieves trying to steal his money. "I met several people who wanted to help me sail a boat" many people were willing to spend their time and make sure Gary was okay sailing the boat by himself. "Calm winds, their must be a storm coming". Gary knows more about the sea so now he can predict when storms are coming.
Confident is a great word to describe Gary. He believes he knows a lot and is willing to perform any task. One of the biggest things that Gary learns is to always try his best and never give up. He has to be willing try his best even if he is in the worse situation in the world (sea storm). Gary also figures that you have to always be prepared for anything that might come across you. Gary knows he should have first learned how to sail the boat before he went on his first voyage. He also believes that it is possible for him to accomplish anything he wants to.
the review.......2004-03-02
Caught by the Sea by Gary Paulsen is about Garys life on boats. It starts out when he was on a military troopship heading for the phillipines. One day Gary was woken by his mom to find that a plane had crashed in the ocean near their ship. Gary saw sharks attacking people ion the water but he knew that it was a part of life and he wasn't afraid of them.
After Gary gets out of the Army he goes to California because he feals drawn to the ocean. While there, he was working in hollywood writing stories, while ther he was invited to a weekend party with some other writers on a lake. This is were Gary got his first ride on a sailboat and decides that that is what hes going to do to fulfill his desire to be near the ocean. After buying a sailboat and a day of sailing Gary decides that he wants to go out to sea. While sailing in the sea the wind dies down to nothing and Gary didn't know that, that meant a storm was coming. He stayed out there all day and finally when it came he was stuck out in the ocean while the wind pinned his boat to down parrallel to the water. After the storm Gary starts heading back toward the shore. After that GAry tells mor stories about his life and that someday he wants to sail around Cape Horn. I thought this was an excellent book. For a reader who doesn't know anything about boats this might be a little slow but Gary does an awesome job explaining the parts and what they do so you should feel like you could go sail a boat after reading. I would definetly reccomend this book to other readers.
Just a Part of Paulsen's Life.......2003-06-17
The majority of Paulsen's books are fictional, but this one is autobiographical in nature. Readers are given the impression that Mr.Paulsen has been many places and has done many things that are not included in this book. This is just the "chapter" on the part of him that was captivated by the sea. His first introduction to the sea is on a troopship with his mother at age seven. He views the horrors of a plane crash and the shark attacks upon some of the survivors. Although this was an ugly experience, he is compelled to return to the sea years later. The majority of the book contains descriptions of his battles in his various boats with oceans, storms and winds. Many of these battles are admissions of his own inadequacy. He then undergoes a learning process each time, only to survive stronger and wiser. The experiences are well-written, with graphic details. Some of the language is quite specific to the sport of sailing and might require additional information to achieve a better understanding. This can be an enjoyable book, but may be limited in its apeal due to a topic of somewhat limited interest.
