Book Description
Beginning in the early 1980s and continuing through the middle 1990s, the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) sponsored a comprehensive research and development program to evaluate and enhance the Army's personnel selection and classification procedures. This was a set of interrelated efforts, collectively known as Project A. Project A had a number of basic and applied research objectives pertaining to selection and classification decision making. It focused on the entire selection and classification system for Army enlisted personnel and addressed research questions that can be generalized to other personnel systems. It involved the development and evaluation of a comprehensive array of predictor and criterion measures using samples of tens of thousands of individuals in a broad range of jobs. The research included a longitudinal sample--from which data were collected at organizational entry--following training, after 1-2 years on the job and after 3-4 years on the job.
This book provides a concise and readable description of the entire Project A research program. The editors share the problems, strategies, experiences, findings, lessons learned, and some of the excitement that resulted from conducting the type of project that comes along once in a lifetime for an industrial/organizational psychologist. This book is of interest to industrial/organizational psychologists, including experienced researchers, consultants, graduate students, and anyone interested in personnel selection and classification research.
Book Description
In the minds of readers and writers of science fiction and fantasy since H. G. Wells's War of the Worlds, Mars has been the hottest of topics. The fourth planet from the sun is the confirmed obsession of millions of Earthlings, and it is not a fixation that will go away. Perhaps noting the tens of millions of hits on the NASA websites during the recent exploration of Mars, President Bush has declared a manned visit to the red planet the next great goal of the space program.
The widespread passionate preoccupation with Mars, combined with the masterful storytelling of the legendary writers in this volume, will seize the imaginations of readers of any generation From the soul-searching poetry of Ray Bradbury's prose to the weirdly paranoid and baroque visions of Philip K. Dick, World Fantasy Award-winning editor Gordon Van Gelder offers some of the greatest science fiction writing on the red planet in Fourth Planet from the Sun..

This is definitely a good collection, as it averages 3.67. From adjusted rating formula, and story qualities that suggests 4.25, so an actual line ball. Given the editor throws in a bit of commentary and insight, and not just author bibliographies, worth rounding up to 4.5.

Journey through time and space.......2005-12-21
It is rare that you can see a genre evolve in the space of a single book; this volume easily achieves that. In twelve stories collected from
The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, we run the gamut from space romance to modern "hard" sci-fi, all based around the theme of going to Mars. Seeing that progression of trends in a genre is enough to make this book reading all by itself.
But it's not that simple.
All of these stories, like all good sci-fi, are fundamentally about people. You don't have to appreciate what details are right (or wrong) about the tales to thoroughly enjoy them. There are stories from the masters of the genre - Clarke and Bradbury - the authors I obsessed over in college - Dick and Zelazny - and new writers I've never heard of before, but am deeply glad I've now found.
The tone ranges from almost whimsical to deeply serious. There is romance, science, social commentary... and most of all, there's deeply believable characters, whose adventures reflect on our own lives.
Let me summarize with the two highest bits of praise I can give to any writing:
Every one of these stories makes me want to read more by these authors.
All of these stories make me want to write more myself.

It saved me on my home work assignment.......2004-09-27
I found this book extremely useful in conducting research for my class presentation on Mars. I strongly recommend it for other 6th graders everywhere!!
Book Description
In April 1993, a national conference sponsored by the Center for Plant Conservation brought together academic biologists, agency staff members, activists, and other experts to critically explore the value of ecological restoration as a conservation strategy. Restoring Diversity examines and expands on issues set forth at that gathering. Topics covered include:
- the strategic and legal context for rare plant restoration
- the biology of restoration
- use (and misuse) of mitigation in rare plant conservation
- case studies from across the United States
Restoring Diversity is a pathbreaking work that not only unifies concepts in the field of restoration, but also fills significant technical and policy gaps, and provides operational tools for successful restorations.
Book Description
There's no other manual like this: more than 1,200 photographs show every step it takes to master Taekwondo, from the very first forms to the most intricate techniques of the art. The coverage is so encompassing, it's the only manual endorsed by the World Taekwondo Federation (the sport's only recognized international governing body)-and because it's co-authored by the man who was the head coach of the U.S. Taekwondo team you know nothing's overlooked. Those eager to learn will find background notes on Taekwondo's history, philosophy, and symbols; a scrupulously complete dissection of breaking and sparring; and a thorough treatment of competition, including officiating guidelines and contestant qualifications. It's THE book anyone interested in Taekwondo must have.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect.............2007-05-13
The manual clearly shows all positions and movements for all froms, it has also identified a couple of bad habits that I have picked up over the years that I will need to work on.
This manual is a must for everyone that is serious about Taekwondo.
Very good forms reference .......2006-05-09
Most of the book covers the forms (Kibon, Taegeuk, Palgue, and the Black Belt ones). It has about 200 pages dedicated to forms (as a comparison, 13 pages to basic techniques - stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks). For more detailed descriptions of the "hows" and "whys" of each of the basic techniques, I'd recommend the "Taekwondo: The state of the art", ISBN 0-7679-0214-9.
Variations in the forms may appear in different associations (and Federations!), but since the "Official Taekwondo Training Manual" has the WTF endorsement, I'll consider it as WTF's official word for the forms.
Forms are shown not only with pictures, but also with feet transition diagrams in top view, drawn on the floor pattern you are supposed to cover during the whole form.
The most visible negative point I see in this book is that it doesn't include the Korean terminology for almost anything apart from the form names. All the basic techniques and form components are only named in English, and not always consistently (a fault, for an "official manual"). Example (in Taegeuk Yook-Jang): ... "execute a middle section round kick with the left foot". Then you go to the "Basic techniques" section, and there's no "middle section round kick", but a "roundhouse kick". On "Taekwondo: The state of the art" (which doesn't include the Korean terminology on the forms steps either, but does it on the basic techniques), for the same step: ..."left-leg turning kick". Then on its "Kicks" chapter you can find the "turning kick", and its Korean name, "Dollyo-Chagi".
My instructor (no book is replacement for one) uses the Korean terminology, and if we had that throughout the "Official Taekwondo Training Manual" in addition to the English names, that would be richer information.
Between this book and the "Taekwondo: The state of the art", I'd take both. The "Official Manual" as a more complete forms reference, and "The state of the art" for everything else.
Book Description
Over 1,200 photographs show every step, from the first forms you'll master to the intricate techniques that display the ultimate in the art of Taekwondo--which will be an official Olympic sport for the first time, in the 2000 Sydney games. Plus, it's endorsed by the World Taekwondo Federation (Taekwondo's only recognized international governing body), and co-authored by the head coach of the U.S. Taekwondo team. Here are background notes on Taekwondo's history, philosophy, and symbols, as well as coverage on breaking, sparring, and competition--including officiating guidelines, contestant qualifications, and more. It's sure to be THE major book on Taekwondo! The authors both live in Virginia Beach, VA. 256 pages, 1,218 b/w illus., 8 x 10.

My 2 cents.......2005-12-03
This book whitewashes the history taekwondo from 1945-71. ITF anyone? Still, for someone learning the WTA system, it is worthwhile for its poomses, if nothing else. You still have to learn them from a master, but it's a good resource when you're practicing a new form at home and can't remember the next move.
Thin on form descriptions.......2005-08-12
This book is a typical tae kwon do book of forms. They demonstrate the end of the move with no thought for the stance or chamber. Its basically pictures of two practitioners (I know who they are and it doesn't make the book any better and they aren't very impressive here). They do not explain the move or why you are making a particular move, they just show you a picture. The only reason I bought this book was for the Palgwe forms, which are hard to find, and its borderline useless for those. For Taegeuk forms I recommend "Tae Kwon Do, The State of the Art," and for Black Belt forms, " Black Belt Tae Kwon Do: The Ultimate Reference Guide to the World's Most Popular Black Belt Martialart." Sure you have to buy two books, but its better than buying this doorstop. It gets three stars for having the Palgwe forms, but if your looking for Palgwe, keep looking, there has got to be a better book out there.
WTF Sanctioned, Excellent Book.......2005-04-19
I'm a 1st dan moving from a more traditional school to a more modern school. Our instructor recommended this book to help me with the new forms and it's excellent. I wouldn't recommend this to students just starting out in taekwondo, but it's a great supplement to those currently training. It's also sanctioned by the WTF, so it's obviously consistent with WTF guidelines.
Several people have pointed out "incorrect moves" in forms, but I think everyone should realize that forms tend to vary amongst schools. These forms are consistent with the forms at my school and are consistent with WTF guidelines.
VERY INFORMATIVE!!!!.......2005-02-18
I am a first degree black belt in MODERN Taekwondo. I read some of the above comments, please don't forget that Modern Taekwondo is constantly being updated to provide students with the newest techniques offered by the World Taekwondo Federation. Modern Taekwondo should not be confused with Traditional Taekwondo. Modern Taekwondo is constantly being updated. Traditional Taekwondo uses the same technique as they did before the Korean war. There is nothing wrong with Traditional Taekwondo, but it is years behind Modern Taekwondo. I feel this is an excellent book. It shows the proper forms from the beginner level to the master level. The forms are correct and precise. I highly recommend this book for anyone interest in Taekwondo (Modern Taekwondo or Traditional Taekwondo).
Hate it........2004-11-05
This book messes up on Poomse's and other kinds of TKD moves. It's poomse's are unworthy. The people in this book are unworthy. DON'T buy this.

Irrelevant trivia.......2007-09-23
There is some decent (Jeopardy-style) knowledge in here, but you're going to look very hard to find it. What you will find is page after page of extremely obscure movie, TV and book trivia that is of little or no value. The authors seem to have a special obsession for Hardy Boys novels. If that's what you're after, this is your book. I would estimate that there may be one or two genuine pieces of useful trivia on each page interspersed with incessant (and very dated) pop-culture allusions.
Trivia buff bought this.......2007-01-11
The book is "OK", some years old now and I found a couple of errors. The trivia has a lot of stuff on TV shows and movies that I have never heard of. Nonethe less it was fun looking over from my bedside stand
Not much use for crosswords.......2006-02-04
I bought this in the hopes it would be a good reference for solving crossword puzzles. Well, I have never once found what I needed in this book. So this is a warning to others: the trivia in it is not useful for crosswords. Since the book may be good for other things, just not what I bought it for, I gave it 2 stars. To me it's worth zero.
could be a usefull resorce.......2005-08-22
lots of info, if you are a trivia fan : this is your book
Good for pop culture, but has some errors.......2002-08-26
I bought this to study for a Jeopardy try out. While it is very heavy on events and people from the last 100-150 years, it does lack in more historical trivia. Definitely a nice book, but not a definitive resource for all around trivia.
One thing I was very concerned about was the errors that I found. One listed one of the ships that took settlers to Jamestown as the Sarah Constant, while the vast majority of records call it the Susan Constant. Also, the book claims that the "Where's the Beef!" slogan was used by Burger King, while it was actually used by Wendy's. Granted, that's just two out of the reported 10,000, but those two I found in a quick skimming of the book, and are just ones I know of. So it doesn't exactly instill confidence in the accuracy of the other answers that I don't know.

Customer Reviews:
It was hot like WOW.......2005-05-04
The book get it while its hot was hot and it is a great book to read if you would like to learn more about teen pregnacies. The one thing I would change is I would make Kit the main character and not megan. This book is very true and it talks about AIDS, HIV, and STD. If I where you I would read this book it was real good.
Or Not........2003-10-19
This book was NOT HOT! It came off as uninformed and I just don't think it is a good Idea to present a social situation like that when Kit was not the main character. It is impossible to understand that situation unless you have been there so the book felt phony and unrealistic in reference to the overall mood. And Kit was obviously immature and unable too raise the baby, yet she kept her child. What kind of message is that sending to our young people? I would not want my daughter read this book because of its unrealistic plot and questionable morals.
Shallow, sappy soap opera.......2001-08-26
"Get It While It's Hot. Or Not" tries to present the dilemmas of teen sex but winds itself tighter and tighter into a ridiculous melodrama, trying frantically to cover pregnancy, adoption, AIDS, alcoholism, sexual ethics and censorship. The plot is about four sixteen year old girls who promised to be "friends till the end" (a phrase cloyingly repeated over and over again in the book) find out that Kit, one of them, is pregnant. For a second, you think this is going to be a heartwarming girl bonding movie that's a teenage "Now and Then", until it takes a turm for the dramatic, when the girls find out that Monk, the high school golden boy jock, has impregnated Kit. It later turns out he has AIDS. With Kit's pregnancy in mind, and a conservative group protesting the nurse handing out a condom, Kit decides to write an article about the truth behind teen sex, forcing her to reexamine her relationship with her boyfriend, Joe. Megan's little universe spins out of control when Kit decides to give up her baby for adoption, and people get majorly PO'd about her teen sex article. The biggest problem with "GIWIHON" is that it tries to cover too many topics in too short a time. For the most part, everything is touched on shallowly. When Kit announces the father of the baby is Monk, I was thinking "who the hell is Monk?" and then the author has to jump in and explain that (I shoulda seen this coming) he's the most popular boy in the school, yadda yadda yadda. Just when you think the author is actually going to get in depth with the highly controversial issues, she pulls out, leaves it up in the air and goes on to another one, leaving the book a mess of melodramatic events. The characters are very flawed, extremely shallow and poorly written. Megan's three friends are total stereotypes: the shy, awkward girl with severe family problems (Kit), the worldly, tough talking vixen (Mia) and the brainy mouse (Elaine.) Her mother is a ridiculous charicature referred to throughout the book as "The General." Because the author is concentrating so hard on cramming as many controversial issues into one book, we never really see any character development. The supporting characters just seem to pop in and pop out. "GIWIHON" tried valiantly but totally overdid it and became flat, sentimental tripe. There are better books on all of the topics: teen pregnancy ("Someone Like You"), censorship ("The Year They Burned The Books"), AIDS ("What You Don't Know Can Kill You", not great but more in depth), sexual ethics ("Kicks") and dealing with an alcoholic mother ("Define Normal.") Don't bother with this...
Good but predictable subjects, not so god plot.......2001-05-07
This book had controversial subject matter and everything you need for a teen book, but i didn't think it was very good. The plot didn't really draw you in in the beginning, and it didn't get any better in the end. i have read MUCH better books, and I thought this one was amateurish.
The Truth of Teen Sex.......2000-05-09
This book was excellent! It kept you reading the whole way through. A very "true to life" situation that is sadly, more and more common. I would give this book five stars because the book is so well written. You experience many emotional situations, as do the characters. Kit, a junior in high school, suddenly surprises all of her friends with the shocking news, she is pregnant. The four friends who have made the promise: "Friends `till the end," soon learn what a friend really is, and just how far each will go. Cutting class, lying to parents, breaking dates, sneaking around in the middle of the night, all things they do to justify their trueness to Kit. Kit's mother is a drunk who has no feeling for her daughter what-so-ever, she just tells Kit to get herself out of the mess. When a rich couple comes into the scene and want to adopt Kit's unborn child. Kit is thrilled, however, Elaine, Mia and Megan, are not. They do not understand how Kit can just give up her own child. When the father of the baby is found to be HIV positive, things turn much worse. The couple takes back their offer to adopt the baby. The four friends learn what a friend truly is, many questions arise and the answers are hard to find. Throughout the book, Megan a writer for the school paper, writes an article on teen sex. When the superintendent forbids her to print it, what will she do? Is she willing to get suspended, even expelled, to speak out and say what's really happening in the lives of teens? I really enjoyed this book because the characters are well-descripted and have their own unique personalities. I really loved Mia's personality because she just seemed so caring and willing. Another reason I enjoyed this was for the plot line, it always kept you reading, the HIV twist was what really thickened the story. The last reason I loved this book was because the form of writing really let you in on what the character was thinking. You always knew what the friends were thinking of Kit, from her "nice spells" to mood swings, you'll never want to miss a second. I truly believe this book has some of the never before brought up issues of teen sex, along with questions that no one wants to answer.
