examples.......2005-10-10
This book does cover all the important topics clearly. Unfortunately, the examples used in the book are 'corny' and distract from the important concepts leading to unneeded text and dreadful thoughts of 'The clip joint' and 'the solar powered cookie oven'. The grammar used in this book is a bit strange; don't, won't, etc appear frequently. This is somewhat odd as bernake was a former Fed governor and abel is also distinguised. I think that, perhaps, the authors attempted to 'dumb down' the book and in the process managed to merely make it corny. I also am a bit appalled at the amount of space given to math - it seems the authors wanted it to be more 'accessible'.
I will agree that the 'real world' examples are both pertinent and informative. They were chosen very well. The footnotes are also welcome as the authors frequently simplify models.
This book could use some trimming and perhaps less talk about dog groomers and the like. If that were to happen this would be one of the best macro books out there.
Anyone want to bet on Dr B becoming Fed Chair? Actually he had no input due to his Fed Governor position.
Excellent textbook.......2005-09-21
This is an excellent textbook as a forerunner to more difficult books such as Branson.It deals with each of the major issues clearly and competently. The text boxes are excellent case studies.

the best economics book i've had so far. IT's easy to understand but filled with TONS of great information. IT all makes sense with the historical examples and also has insight on the future. A must read!

Great textbook.......2006-04-02
I am an engineer/scientist and I used this book for my first course in World Economy/Macro. Although the course used Mankiw Macroeconomics 5th Ed as the textbook (which is a good intermediate-level book), this book provided a great introductory foundation for the various concepts.
The color illustrations/tables in this book are by far the best that I have seen (for example the book uses real units on x and y axes and actual data wherever possible in figures which makes them less abstract than the figures found in other books). Economics by Hall is also a reasonably good book but not as versatile as this one.

The concepts might be spot-on, but the presentation is not. The book adopts the narrative, rambling styles so common in college textbooks these days. It doesn't define its terms well or link its terms with its graphs.
Manages to make introductory Macroeconomics more difficult than it should be.

I just bought the Latin American version of this book , and it was good . The main issue here is the lack of certain formulas and graphing techniques required to do some of the exercises in my MBA class...
Clear and Concise.......2006-03-05
I think Parkin's explanations are clear and concise. There were no blah-blah-blah's about weird econ stuff that a beginner would get confused about. The pictures really helped you understand the concept too. Finally (and this might just be me), I thought the segments about famous economists and current-affairs articles relating to econ were fun to read.

This book is the best introductory economics textbook that I have ever read. There are other good books and in different languages, however this is the most comprehensive summary of most of the topics that a Bachelor in economics will cover. It is especially useful and accessible to everyone since it helps you develop the necessary intuition for more advanced and profound courses. Basically, nothing more that basic math is required to read this book, and no statistics, much less econometrics or anything advanced. For advanced students, it is still helpful since it can be used as a reference for concepts. It is conveniently divided into two parts, macroeconomics and microeconomics. The macro part for example starts by outlining the very basis of the macro models, and from then it proceeds to add different variables that make the model more complex. Its explanations are very tractable and are accompanied by numerical examples in tables that help you develop notions such as what a marginal increment is and so on. All that, without the necessity of derivatives. I would undoubtedly buy this book if I were to start studying economics even in countries where economics is not a major but an entire undergraduate program with many econ classes.

This book is, roughly speaking, a consumers'
guide to buying and using a folding kayak.
A guide like this is especially useful because
the market is quite diverse and it's almost
impossible to test-paddle allthe brands that
are available.
Especially important is Diaz' summary of the
two main reasons for choosing a folding
kayak. The first and most obvious is portability.
You can, indeed, take it with you-even on an
airplane. This means that any trip has the
potential to become a kayaking vacation.
The second advantage of folders-and one that's
not often mentioned is their flexibility.
Like the original Inuit skin-on-frame boats.
a folder flexes in the sea. This makes for a
softer, less-punishing ride and reduces
fatigue. There is also a pleasant sense of
place that goes along with a flexible boat,
a sense of being on the water instead of
being on an amusement park ride.
So: buy this book to get a good sense of why
folding boats are worthwhile and study it
to find out which one is best for you.
Great Kayaking Book - of benefit to hardshell users too.......2005-01-10
An outstanding primer on the folding kayak from soup to nuts - a wonderful book. The author is unreserved in his love of and praise for the folding kayak. He thinks they are better and tells your why. But there is a wealth of information here too for the hardshell kayaker.
Anyone interested in folding kayaks needs this book. Anyone interested in kayaking in general should consider it.
Still the bible.......2003-07-01
Back in 1997 I wrote the first Amazon review of what was then the only book devoted entirely to folding kayaks.(You might want to scroll down and read it; everything I wrote still applies).With no competition you'd think Ralph would be content to rest on his laurels, but instead he's put a lot of effort into an extensive rewrite of the original book. All the new boats that have appeared on the market since the first edition have been included, and plenty of solid information from Ralph's invaluable Folding Kayak Newsletter has been integrated into the new edition.
If you have the slightest interest in folding kayaks, you certainly owe it to yourself to buy a copy of this book. And if you already own the first edition, you should absolutely get this one as well, for all the new material Ralph has included. It's still the bible of the sport.

You can break it down into component parts, stuff the bits into one or two bags or even, in the case of the Feathercraft, a specially designed backpack with padded shoulder straps and a hip belt, and take it wherevever you're bound. That's the whole point: No more hoping to find kayak rentals at your destimnation. No more settling for whatever beat-up barges the renters happen to have on hand.
If that tempts you, then you need this book to help sort out the facts and fiction (are folders fragile? less efficient than rigids? less stable? etc.) and get a handle on the numerous makes and models, which vary considerably in price, weight, size and design. Diaz, who is a good writer and an enthusiast (he publishes the Folding Kayak newsletter), has done his homework, updating his 1994 first edition to include and critique several kayaks that are new to the U.S, market

I love this book, it goes into great details the attributes of each sign and gave the elements as well this book is must for the truly astrology buff. included are also western/chinese animal characteristic as well, this book gives indepth info on the compadiblity of each sign, how deal with and cope with issue's that arise's with the diffrent temperments. this is the bible on the Chinese animal/element traits.

This is the best book I have read on Chinese Astrology. The author has a very advanced ability to describe the nuances of each Chinese sign. I highly commend her for her work.
Typical gimmickry, though unexpected.......2006-01-18
I owned the previous (fourth) edition of this book, which is quite well written and very useful, considering its class in Astrology which amounts to the western "sun sign" type. I was also interested in the equally useful yearly predictions for each sign contained in it, which spanned from 1998 to 2007. For an update on these, I decided to get this copy, the latest edition. But I was badly disappointed when I did. The only changes made to this new edition included a larger book size and new cover design - more paper. The subject matter was the same, but the predictions, which I thought would be updated, were the same old ones, though rewritten and slightly lengthened, but only from 2005 to 2008. This book needn't be regarded as a new edition at all, and in keeping with the spirit of commercial swindling prevalent in our money driven times, seems only to have been produced so as to seem different from the old copy, so that people could buy it, thinking it was updated. In that way, Mrs.Lau earns more money. I didn't think a worthy scholar like her would stoop to such gimmickry like all the rest, but it turns out I was wrong.

This is a highly overlooked book. It's one of the best coming of age novels from the female perspective. Sheila is a young woman growing up during a time when women were suppressed. She deals with family, relationships, love, and sexuality, as well as working towards a career in a day when a lot of men wanted women to be just wives. Very empowering.

Set in the mid 1940s, SNOW APPLES tells of a girl's determination to pursue a forbidden romance against the wishes of her watchful mother. Her obsession with Nels pries at the heart of her powerful connection to her mother. SNOW APPLES appeared in 1984 in Canada only to much acclaim: its first appearance here in the US should earn it equal merit.

At the end of the Second World War Sheila is 16. She is expected to quit school and stay at home to help her family until she is married. Both her family and her boyfriend are pressuring her but she doesn't want to be tied down. She wants to go to the university to become a nurse.
When Shelia misses her period she knows she has to leave home. she finds work at a restaurant and a house for rent. When the pressures of having a baby get to be too much she calls her dad for help. He talks her into an abortion. "Sheila, girl, it goes on all the time! If every time a woman got pregnant she had the child, we'd have been crowded off the map long ago."
I didn't like the book much because it goes on and on about boring stuff no one cares about and then the parts you want to know about are over in one page.

A Classic tale that teaches tots to count.......2000-10-07
At last I found a replacement for "pie" (Snow White's Apple Pie: A Little Look-Look Book) That is what my 2 year old daughter Alexis Nicole calls her favorite book that doesn't have big purple dinosaur running around. Alexis never gets tired of pointing at the big colorful block style artwork or the animated faces on the dwarves and Snow White and trying to read along.
When the book started to fall apart, from being thrust into our hands over and over by Alexis, my wife remarked we had better find a replacement fast!
Then a funny thing began happening; she started counting along with the book as it manages to repeat the numbers over and over. Alexis doesn't mind, in fact she is having fun learning. The story line also manages to work in some lessons on teamwork, not giving up, and humor. Can Alexis wait until my package arrives with "pie?" What can we distract her with? "Barney's Book of Hugs" seems to always make her giggle and also gets her wanting to have long big hugs. Maybe I'll be selfish and have Snow White shipped by barge via the Panama Canal, but then if she ever fails a math test I'll feel guilty... Learning should always be this much fun!
