Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not up to standard.......2007-04-17

This book was a required text, otherwise I never would have read it. The book is full of inconstancies, bad literary technique, and it takes to many pages to cover not enough material. The authors personal prejudices are obvious. There are better books on teamwork available.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook........2006-03-09

I was required to purchase this book for a project management course and it's one of the better texts I've read on the topic. Well organized and easily referenced, one of the main strengths of the book is it's analysis of real world examples. Very good text overall.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Price for "External Evironments".......2001-04-19

Leigh Thompson has done it again. Like few others this Northwestern University scholar takes current research and puts it on the page like few other experts. I particularly found the sections on dealing with conflict within teams, creativity, and social capital (in the External Evironment section) worth reading. I keep this book with me when I am meeting with a team. I use the individual chapters as a guide for activities there. If you have an interest in teams, Leigh Thompson is the one expert you should include in your library.

5 out of 5 stars Making the Team Makes the Grade!.......2000-01-16

Whether you work in teams, design them, or study them, you will find much of value in this book. Drawing on a wealth of social and behavioral science findings, Leigh Thompson shows the advantages, and the pitfalls, of getting things done through teamwork. Clearly written, with many case examples, Thompson builds on her research and consulting experiences to create a complex picture of what makes groups tick. I particularly liked her explanation of how to foster creativity in teams, as well as how to deal with the inevitable conflicts that arise. She notes that teams are not a panacea. However, under the right conditions, properly organized teams contribute substantially to their organizations. If you're dissatisfied with the way things are going in your organization, this book would make a great (anonymous?) gift for your boss!

          Book Description

Absolute Space, Absolute Time, and Absolute Motion exist. These are shown to be facts through an investigation of the nature of infinitesimals. Knowledge of that nature also makes the irrational magnitudes within the unit comprehensible. The number line is shown to be cognitively superior to set theory; furthermore, non-Euclidean geometry is shown to be a mere manipulation of symbols and not an expression of a "parallel universe." Inside, the reader will also learn about a hitherto unknown number system locked within _-1. He will also discover in the infinitesimal calculus a hidden key to a level of reality beneath that of nano-technology.. The foundation of science is not some vague generality, but the exercise of reason as originating from the human sensorium. There is no difference between mathematical and ordinary inductive reasoning.

            Product Description

The subject areas of astronomy and astrophysics have grown tremendously during the last few decades. New developments in radio astronomy and recent data retrieved from NASA s Hubble Space Telescope have resulted in many discoveries and created new interest in the study of the universe. Using four-color throughout, Astronomy & Astrophysics describes the different techniques and instruments employed in the study of the universe and the results obtained with discussion on both theory and observation. The book begins by building the fundamental concepts, theories of creation of the universe, formation of stars and galaxies, mysterious objects of the sky etc. Simultaneously it elaborates the instrumentation and observational schemes in both radio and optical. Finally, the current and future scopes of radio astronomy, new instrumental developments and supporting instrumentations like radio frequency interference monitoring setup and analysis have been explained in details which are rarely found in other texts. A CD-ROM with color figures and simulations accompanies the book. FEATURES Uses spectacular four-color photos throughout the book. Includes several chapters on radio astronomy and covers additional equipment for supporting radio astronomy like spectrum monitoring & data analysis, and some new instrumental developments for broadening the spectrum of the radio telescopes. Book Description

The field of developmental instability has generated a large amount of controversy recently, mostly because of fierce disagreement over the genetic basis of fluctuating asymmetry and its role in mate selection. This book is a timely and innovative synthesis of the discussion. With twenty four chapters by leading authorities, the book is an especially thorough and critical treatment of the genetic basis of fluctuating asymmetry, and of its role in animal communication, sexual selection, and plant and animal ecology and evolution. The book features an in-depth examination of the relationship between environmental stress and asymmetry, as well as a critical assessment of the value of asymmetry as a biomarker in ecotoxicology. Up-to-date information from disparate fields within the biological sciences is creatively integrated to examine the molecular and cellular origins of developmental instability and fluctuating asymmetry, and the link between asymmetry and Darwinian fitness. This comprehensive treatment also describes methodology for data analysis and optimization of experimental design, refocuses attention on key problems in the field and identifies new research directions.

5 out of 5 stars Total Results! Incredible Book!.......2006-12-21

I read the first edition of this book when I was 14 years old. I followed all the advice to the letter. Subsequently, I led my baseball league in hitting with a .625 batting average. What a ringing endorsement, huh.

                          5 out of 5 stars Hitter's Best Friend.......2003-05-11

If you want to learn to hit the right way, this might be the best investment you will ever make. Like another reviewer wrote, though, you must be willing to do the work to learn the lessons the book teaches. Also, if you just want to be a home run hitter, this book is not for you; a home run is only a pleasant mistake in the Charlie Lau/George Brett school, which teaches solid line-drive hitting. After studying this book, I became a Top 10 hitter in a highly-competitive Texas league. The Art of Hitting .300 is a baseball treasure.

                          5 out of 5 stars great hitter's book.......2001-07-27

I recommend this book for anyone wants to learn (or teach) advanced hitting techniques. Pictures and descriptions clearly explain common hitting problems and show correct swing mechanics. My 15-year old struggled through his first slump before we applied Lau's hitting fundamentals. He added fifty points to his batting average over the next month and hit 0.638 in a national tournament. I believe this book had a lot to do with his improvement.

                          5 out of 5 stars I owe my self-esteem to this book.......2000-09-12

I was a scrawny little kid to whom baseball was everything. To my parent's dismay, I judged myself by how I played baseball. But I was scared of the baseball and lost as to how to go about hitting it. My coaches gave me harmful, misguided instructions like, "make sure it's a stike, then swing at it" and "snap those wrists". I was a wreck. Then one winter my Dad (like me, a George Brett/Wade Boggs fan) bought me this book. My Dad had never been able to hit either, but he and I dissected it over the course of a summer.

It was a lot of work, more work than any 12-year-old could could have undertaken without the guidance of an equally determined adult. But my Dad and I realized that hitting was a process, a method that could be learned. Lau taught that everything I had been told -with horrible results- was in fact wrong. You don't judge whether a pitch is a strike and then swing; you start your swing and let your reflexes hold you back. You don't swing hard with your arms; you swing easy and get your power from your whole body.

All spring we worked on it, practicing in the garage, spending literally hundreds of dollars at batting cages working on mechanics. That very next season, I was hitting the ball better, and I only improved from there. By the end of that season, I was a certified leadoff terror. My team won its league title thanks to a game-winning single by yours truly. I even hit a few home runs (by not trying to, as Lau teaches). I was deliriously happy.

Even since then I've been a good hitter. Not a power hitter (I'm much too small), but a solid doubles guy with surprising pop. What I learned from this book kept me in organized baseball through Babe Ruth and high school (simultaneously), college, and semi-professional leagues. I am a hideously slow runner who soon after puberty had to give up dreams of playing professionally, but to this day I can step in front of a pitcher or pitching machine -cold- and drive the ball. This book taught me how. If you really want to hit a baseball, buy it, read it, internalize it, and put your faith in it. It will serve you well.

5 out of 5 stars Zen and the art of Charlie Lau.......2000-03-26

I read this book while I was in high school, and I must say that this book became an incredible source of enlightenment. Mr. Lau breaks down the basics (mechanics and drills) which are all fundamentally sound. But it is when Mr. Lau presents the mindset of his methods, is where the heart of this book lies. After following his teachings, not only did I have the best year in my high school career, but I am adapting his teaching to my Little League team (rookie coach this year). Of course, everyone will receive their own lessons from his words, as everyone has his or her own style of hitting. But this book is worth reading, as you will find a lot to learn. I bow to Mr. Lau, has he is truly a 'sensei' of the baseball world.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-09-04

As a first year law student with no idea what to expect, this book was extremely helpful. I purchased it the summer before my first semester, and imagine how excited I was when my legal writing teacher recommended this book over all law school aides. This book explains a great deal about law school, including what to expect in general, how to write briefs, and effective outlining methods. I would highly recommend this purchase!

Deaver's book is a good, light read. The main, primary focus of the book is to: (1) introduce you to an outlining system to prepare for your exams (and to help you study for them) and (2) to give you a brief, but reasonably thorough review of your entire law school experience, from the pros and cons of law review to how to write a good scholarly paper. Note the short page length--only about 200 pages. Thus, the book doesn't cover *everything* about law school, but it is a very good start. In addition to law school itself, it has some good overviews and tips about job prospects, the legal profession, summer opportunities, etc. It also has a brief overview of the LSAT and application process, although these areas are really not that informative to be worthy of publication (the main point of the book is, as I said, the outlining system and a rough overview of the law school experience itself--which this book does very well). It is written in an easy, casual manner and the author can be funny at times, too. All in all, a good, light, easy read about how to best study for law school classes.

This was an excellent book; I am still working on my undergraduate degree planning on attending law school. I know people who are attorneys and I have received there feedback but this book was so much more in depth and precise. I am doing a lot of research on what to expect during law school and how to get into a high tier institution. This book tells it all from admissions to class selection to internships. Law school confidential is a must read if you are planning towards law school.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent if you're not sure if law school is what you want........2005-04-05

My ten year career has been in software development management. I have aspirations for business management as well as politics. So I thought perhaps a J.D. would help me further those goals. This book helped inform me exactly what to expect in law school, the tests, the application process, etc. It gives some ideas of what one can do with the degree, etc. It's a nice short book that you can read in one sitting. It was nice to be able to do that and figure out whether or not I really wanted to invest 3 years in law school.

2 out of 5 stars Badly needs to be updated.......2004-09-01

I read this before starting law school and was impressed by its guide to academic success. Unfortunately, after starting law school, reality set in and the book's weak points became very clear; namely, the lack of any discussion of using computers in law school.

It's tough to differentiate this book from the shelves of other similar books, all promising you the knowledge of how to succeed in law school. The problem is that each person has their own way of learning, analyzing and remembering information. What is suggested in one book may be totally useless to one person, yet may be a revelation to others.

This book is of some use for those entering law school, if only to see an outline of learning habits for those anally-retentive enough to follow it on a daily basis. But my experience was that all the self-help books become useless once I developed my own study skills. And, while these sorts of books may be good for 1Ls, they are not very useful for 2Ls or 3Ls.

The lack of incorporating computers into one's learning skills is the absolute weakest aspect of this book. Without laptops and online study guides, many current law school students would be totally lost.
