Great Historical Piece... But Accuracy is Questionable.......2005-10-18

I wish I had some good things to say about this book, but I really don't. More than anything it reads like a historical document as opposed to offering any fresh ideas on search engine's or search engine marketing. Rife with outdated technologies and solutions, this book is in dire need of an update, not just a republishing.

I spent most of my time skimming through this book looking for anything currently relevant on the search engine landscape. I did find their discussion of the "engine behind Google's search technology".

"PigeonRankTM is a system for ranking web pages developed by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Standford University. Brin argued that low-cost pigeon clusters (PCs) could be used to compute the relative value of web pages faster than human editors or machine-based algorithms."

You can read more about PigeonRank on Google's website. Unlike the authors of this book, who appear to take PigeonRank at face value, you might want to read the small print at the bottom of the page:

"Note: This page was posted for April Fool's Day - 2002."

I'll concede that the above note may not have been on the page back when this book was published, it was common knowledge in the SEO community that this was, in fact, an April Fool's prank.

Marketing Through Search Optimization does provide a pretty detailed narrative of the history of search engines, in general. Though one must take that with a grain of salt once you consider the depth of research that was put into the PigeonRank section.

In all, the strategies listed nothing new or that isn't readily available for free online. Some of their methods cross the line into spamming territory, though they also concede that too much of certain practices are likely to get you banned.

Finally, the end of the book lists a number of tools of the trade. Many of them might be helpful tools, on the current SEO landscape, however many of them are simply spam generators, some of which have been singled-out by Google as such.

Good book, has really helped me achieve greater rankings.......2004-07-21

I bought this book a couple of months ago, and put all the advice into practice on my website. The results have been great and my ranking is continuing to grow. The book is well written and contains a great range of practical advice and information on getting your site ranked highly. The Chapter on Link Strategies is particularly good, this is an area that I had not really considered before reading this book, and it now makes up a considerable part of my search engine strategy.

Buy this book if you want a competitive advantage in your search engine strategy.

Great Starter, falls short for the aspiring professional.......2004-07-15

This book is good for a newcomer to search engine optimization, but anyone who has been working on promoting a website will already know or assume all of the information in this book. If you are brand new to SEO then this book is a good starting point, but otherwise spend your time browsing the web or using SEO descussion forums, because the information will be more current and more in debth.

Mr Welsch's mechanical ability is only surpassed by his entertaining writing and observations on life. I have read all three of the Tractor Trilogy and have developed a curious desire to restore one, even though I have no where to do so in my urban environment.

Hats off to Mr Welsch and his delightful works.Now if he could only make plumbing so enjoyable to read about!

Because Tractors are People Too.......2003-06-02

Well, not really. But this guy seems to think so. I wouldn't say he's a nut (because my father acts like him) but he's certainly got some quirks. This book is more about farm-related humor than it is about fixing old tractors. But it does offer advice for the novice old tractor enthusiast here and there in a very non-threatening kind of familiar fashion.

Roger and Tractors - Old Iron meets it's match.......2002-07-06

Roger has a great story to tell about Men and Tractors. Using a homey kind of "front porch" story telling, Roger tells us about his steadfast affection (obsession) with old forgotten tractors. It read like I was right there in the shop with him looking over his shoulder. Given his keen wit, there is something to make you smile on each page.

The book is punctuated with articles he has written for various publications and of course advice. Lots of advice. For the novice restorer, there are plenty of tips and the appendix contains a good deal of information.

A tractor lover would appreciate this book the most, but any tinker who is even slightly mechanically inclined will appreciate it as well.

For anyone from rural anywhere, you can recognize people from your own town in Mr Welsch's writing. He is not the typical Nebraska farmer though. Not in the same vein as those who have struggled to make ends meet.. Mr Welsch ads humor to a life that can't be beat. It reminds me a lot of why we do it.. Because I wouldn't do anything else

Side-Splitter with Style.......2001-04-22

Great book!! Roger keeps you laughing as you restore your old iron. Also has great advice on restoration and where to find books, magazines, parts, and much, much more. You've missed a lot of joy and laughter if you don't read this one. Not recommended for bedtime reading, unless you enjoy hearing things like--"It can't be all that funny." "Would you put that down and go to sleep." "Your really gett'n hung up on this tractor stuff" "What do you mean 'You want to get another tractor when you get this one restored' etc.

From a practitioner's point of view.......2001-04-09

Most of the information is already available in various suppliers' catalogs and publications. Pictures of application are old and show little detail if any. Advances in facing materials and adhesives were not discussed in length so are the tooling and manufacturing equipment used in this industry. Would appreciate more information on failures and cause of failure of bonded structures.

On the plus side there are lots of graphs, tables, illustrations, and examples of calculations which are useful. Reference given are good place to get further information.

In general this is an expensive book in hard cover that is meant to be kept on every practitioner's reference bookshelf.

We who fish have all heard of these places. The Secrets, the holes where civilisation didn't spoil the fish, and the fish are wild. Or, if originally stocked, been living the free life long enough to be close to wild. Yet again Gierach proves that his writing, although deeply personal, never becomes private and that his choice of subject - matter touches everybody with just a passing knowledge of fishing. His books are about life first and the fish second or are these to inseperable to him?

This is the book that hooked me on John Gierach.......1998-10-02

It all started with this book as a gift -- John's stories are addictive and now I own all of John's works (save, "Signs of Life"). If you enjoy well-crafted short stories, you will not be disapointed with this work.

No match for the Muret-Sanders 1902 edition.......2006-04-14

These newer dictionaries are nothing compared to the great Muret-Sanders edition from 1902, which you can buy on the web if you search for that title and year. The difference is a million percent. If you can master German from that era especially with texts from that time, modern German will be so easy you will laugh. But it will take you a while to rewire your brain - give it a month or two, and see the results.

Then use one of these modern dictionaries for the silly new words you have to know....

The Best German/English Dictionary.......2006-02-19

It came quick and was exactly what I need for my German class. I used in high school and now in college, everytime its the book. It came just in time for classes.

Subpar dictionary - at least the English to German section.......2005-12-04

For work and for fun, I have consulted dictionaries in several languages, every day, it seems, for 15 years. If there is one thing I am qualified to write a review on, it's dictionaries.

I found the English-to-German half of the Langenscheidt New College dictionary to be shockingly unhelpful. For example, I tried to find the translation of "move" as in "move house". Under the entry for "move", there is a long list of German equivalents, but without any indication of which one suits which context. Which German word in the long list I'm staring at means "move" as in emotionally moving, move my car, move to a new city or move over? The dictionary gives no indication. I'd have to look up all the 50-some German verbs listed to know for sure!

Good modern dictionaries are very good about guiding people to the right word for the context. This one is not. The publishers must know there is a problem, but don't want to invest in an update. If you want help expressing yourself in German, don't buy this dictionary. I'm returning mine.

In the dictionary's defence, the German to English section seems adequate. I wonder if that is what the other, positive reviewers are focusing on. (A later note: the full-size Langenscheidt seemed to be in better shape. But for mid-size, take a look at the Oxford-Duden, too.)

I've had a great time with the Langenscheidt's collegiate dictionary.It has given me a much broader sense of meaning and depth to what the german language is all about.

When I was a child, I found this book in the library of my town. It was a very old edition, but I became to love it so much. Now I'm older, but I will enjoy buying it again for my children. I know they will enjoy the book so much, too.
