Book Description

To retain customers and solicit new clients, businesses need proven ways to make their products and services stand out. From subject lines that grab attention to detailed ways of calculating return on investment, every aspect of e-mail advertising is detailed in Permission Based E-Mail That Works.

In a clear, lively tone, author and e-mail marketing expert, Kim MacPherson covers the specifics of a new breed in advertising. MacPherson draws from a large pool of material and sources to present a well rounded approach to advertising, including ways ""opt in"" (permission based e-mail) can be used to retain customers and acquire new clients. Creative copy, streaming media, and specialized offers can make your e-mail sing, but the ability to measure various approaches is crucial. By understanding the basics of rented e-mail lists versus in house databases, embedded cookies, and return on investment charts, MacPherson has developed an invaluable guide through the ins and outs of the virtual marketplace.

4 out of 5 stars Reference Guide for E-Mail Marketing.......2006-02-18

From start to finish, Kim leads us on a journey to build our businesses through permission based email marketing. What an awesome way to generate new, fresh leads in order to jump start my business.

5 out of 5 stars Tips, Tricks, and Practices That Really Work.......2005-11-24

If you are thinking about starting email marketing campaigns, then know that this book is a prerequisite.

I've been using traditional marketing vehicles for years, but email marketing was something new and foreign to me. I started reading this book and signed up for Eliteweb.cc Email Marketing at the same time. I was truly a fish out of water with this stuff. After reading Kim's book cover-to-cover, I must say that I feel more like an email guru than someone just ready to take their first steps.

There are definitely a few parts of the book that are in need of an update. Several times I would ask my account executive about something that I had read, only to find out the `times have changed'. But, even with those outdated parts, the fundamentals discussed in the book are as true today as they were then.

The book was also a very good read. I was excited to start using this new vehicle, but I had no desire to pickup a text book and start studying. I found myself flying through the pages and I continue to have it right beside my desk and refer back to it often.

I've been able to implement many of the tips and ideas Kim suggests and they're not just theories, they really work. So often I read `expert' books that do little in the way of practical results, but let me assure you, this book has paid for itself many times over.

Just like another reviewer suggested, I would recommend reading some of Seth Godin's work as well since that has also helped me a lot when navigating the online marketing landscape.

3 out of 5 stars Kim **NOW is the perfect time to revise your book**.......2004-06-27

Time passes and this book now needs to be revised. The
M/s Mac Pherson gives you all the skills you need to
get to the place you should have been two years ago.

For example no mention is made of autoreponders. Today
almost all permission based systems now make use of
autoresponders as an efficient method that ensures
quick replies to new leads and immediately delivers
that special offer, white paper etc.

Also it is rather quaint that there seems to be no
web page associated with the book. A place to log on
to give my permission for the author to send me her
newsletter and receive a personal email from Kim
promoting her new book or on line web conference.

Although squarely based on permission marketing the
word SPAM is treated more as a sick relative rather
than the final attack of an infinity of verbal locusts
hatched for a world without meaning.

Kim, It's time to hide from the family again and
write an all NEW edition on How to do it right today.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2004-03-21

I love this book. Email marketing is an important technique to get more traffic. Now with spamming and more spamming, it makes you nervous about doing it. This book spells out the techniques to do it safely and effectively. On the downside, some of the details are not necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to e-mail marketing.......2002-04-24

I found Kim MacPherson's book to be a true step by step guide to e-mail marketing worth many times the price I paid for it. She demistified the entire process of e-mail marketing for me. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in developing and executing an effective e-mail campaign.

            Book Description

This book focuses on China's rural industries, offering an innovative, theoretical framework to explain insitutional change. Susan Whiting explores the complex interactions of individuals, institutions, and the broader political economy to examine variation and change in property rights and extractive institutions in China's rural industrial sector. Whiting explains why public ownership predominated during the early years of reform and why privatization is now taking place. This book will be of interest not only to students and scholars of Chinese economic development, but also of comparative politics and political economy more generally.

4 out of 5 stars Good stories just too many of them.......2006-11-11

The stories are very touching and good, just it is a huge book and
there are too many of them and inherently they are quite similar.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Climbing Book; Period.......2005-06-13

I have read literally dozens of climbing books. Without a doubt, Boardman's "Shining Mountain" is the best climbing book ever written. The only books that come close are "The White Spider" (Harrer), "The Mountains of My Life" (Bonatti) and "Touching the Void" (Simpson) which is not really a climbing but an epic survival book.

The other books in this omnibus are also good, but not as good as The Shining Mountain. I have read it about 5 times and have enjoyed it every time.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best of its kind.......2003-09-14

The writing is clear and engaging and the expeditions are covered thoroughly. The last book of the Omnibus about a Tasker Omnibus is not as good as the rest. Book is partly a credit to the writing ability of the two authors and partly due to the nature of small expeditions documented where the story is intimate and human, rather than the unholy literary messes encountered in books about large expeditions.

                        5 out of 5 stars A gripping collection.......2001-03-22

This book delivers one of the most comprehensive perspective on climbing in the Himalayas. With vivid descriptions of successful (and unsuccessful) climbs of a variety of peaks in the Himalayas plus descriptions of the North Face of the Eiger and the Snow Mountains of New Guinea, this book demonstrates the versatility of these two gentlemen.

The drama and imagery shines through the writing of both Tasker and Boardman. With details on the first ascents of the West Face of Changabang, the Southeast ridge of Dunagiri, the Northwest ridge of Kangchenjunga and more, this book is a treasure trove of great climbing. There are occasional technical terms but they demonstrate the effort and intensity of these two climbers. A great choice.

                        5 out of 5 stars Remarkable........2000-05-08

Having read inumerable books on mountaineering, I wasn't prepared for the impact of this one. I've read "Fragile Edge" by Maria Coffey, (it is excellent, she was Tasker's girlfriend)about her and Hillary Boardman's experiences following the deaths of Boardman and Tasker, and wasn't prepared for the emotional impact of this book. It is probably one of the best I've read. Boardman's style gripped me, and brought home what a terrible tragedy his death was for the literary community. I believe there are "writing climbers" and "climbing writers"; Boardman was definitely a gifted climber who wrote beautifully. This book should be in anyone's library who loves mountains and adventure travel.

I rented 501 French Verbs from the library. For each verb it had examples of usage. The French book also had idiom phrases, quizzes, etc... Liked it so much I bought it from Amazon.

So I rented 501 Russian Verbs from the library expecting similar content as the French version. What a difference. If you really need a book that shows you how to conjugate 501 Russian verbs without context and without examples, this book is for you.

Honestly how can you have a Russian verb book that covers verbs of motions with one or two word English translations. Completely worthless for learning how to use the verbs.

The differences between perfective and imperfective require examples to begin to make any sense of the usage.

The only reason I can think of for the positive reviews is that it must have been a classroom assignment for extra credit.

I majored in Russian while in college! The "501 Russian Verbs" Book was an invaluable resource for me during my studies that I couldn't have imagined living without!

All Russian verbs are arranged alphabetically and are conjugated fully for easy use. I found that the verbs used in this book were of the most common Russian verbs used in everyday conversation. I highly recommend this book to all those wanting a comprehensive resource to enhance their learning of the Russian language.

". This is an infinitely better book. There is really no comparison.

I bought the 501 Russian verbs book and I never use it.

Whereas the one I mentioned is very useful and well organized.

In general, I would not buy any books on Russian that are by non native speakers. There are a very few exceptions but this is not one of them.

I actually question the usefullness of this whole series of books. You need to learn verbs in context of actual Russian movies or books or real speech you hear. If you try and use them by learning them in a dictionary, the result will be laughable.

For example, when you hear an imperative a lot or see it a lot, you will learn it and then know it and how and when it is used. Do you really expect to look up an imperative in a dictionary and use it correctly? That is such a laughable notion. Especially in Russian!

                          Book Description

Reminiscent of Alex Garland's The Beach, this action-packed novel brilliantly depicts one teenager's journey to understanding the importance of relationships, responsibility, and revenge. Sharp and punchy writing energizes Goog's road trip along the coastline of Australia with his two best friends; however, their time enjoying the surf is compromised by vivid encounters with sharks the size of trucks, a sinister hitchhiker, and neo-Nazis. As their trouble and excitement grow along their epic trip, so does their strength and independence.

                          3 out of 5 stars Author's reply to Vicky Reutter's review.......2003-10-04

I was impressed to read Vicki Reutter's review of my novel "Rhino Chasers". It was thoughtful and well-written and it is rewarding for an author to have a someone undertake such a close reading of their book.

I felt, however, that my novel may have been slightly short-changed. "Rhinos" is accused of portraying surfers as a "misogynistic lot who can't utter a sentence without using profanity". I think this is definitely true of Aldo who is guilty of both these things. He is a narrow-minded racist who takes a heavy tumble for his poor attitude. His bad language indicates his inarticulate nature and was a cause of some concern to me both during and after the writing of "Rhino Chasers". Those who I talked to (editors, teachers, fellow classmates in my creative writing course) all said one thing: the language is authentic and entirely in-keeping with Aldo's character. He is also a misogynist, mainly due to his inability to relate to women, but I don't think either Goog or Castro are; and I'm certainly not willing to attach this label to all surfers. The surfer culture is fairly male-orientated and, although that is changing, I wanted this story to be about three young guys. I didn't set out to exclude female characters it just happened that Goog, Castro and Aldo took over the narrative.

As to the comments about the Aboriginals the boys meet on the road being "red-necked" they are far from that. Without entering into a dialogue about land rights and how the first inhabitants of Australia have been marginalised and robbed of their culture, I wanted to show how Aldo would react when he comes into contact with them. That he shouts at them that it isn't their land, it is Australia (his land), highlights a common perception among certain people that this country doesn't have traditional owners.

I am glad that Vicki enjoyed the "wonderful imagery" associated with the sea. It is my love of the ocean and surfing that inspired me to write "Rhinos". I hope she can read through the profanities and into the subtext of the novel. I also hope she will enjoy the sequel to "Rhino Chasers" which will be published next year by Allen & Unwin.
