A very good book, but a bit too much mathematical detail in deriving formulas for probability distributions; could use better descriptions of when to use each probability distribution.
Best Book for Quantitative Risk Analysis.......2004-04-25
I believe that this book is the best of many Risk Analysis books. The book's structure, starting from fundamental topics and guiding to advanced topics, is excellent. So, I translated this book into Japanese! You will make the best use of the book with Excel add-in Monte Carlo simulation software like @Risk and Crystal ball that you can get its trial version from the vendor's site(free!). But, the value of this book is not decreased with its sophistitated notation even if you don't have such software. You can enjoy the logic of Quantitative Risk Analysis. Now, the author is preparing his original software. I hope it will be as valuable as this book.
1st edition more useful to a practitioner than the 2nd.......2003-10-18
Unlike in the first edition, the author seems to have tried his best to eliminate any reference to any simulation software in the second edition. Result: it now reads like any academic simulation text, only less. The first edition wasn't broke. Why fix it? Bring back the classic Vose!
Rigouros, clear and practical.......2003-04-20
This book gives a deep insight into the state of the art and recent developments of quantitative risk analysis using simulation methods. Describes topics such as second order risk analysis I never heard about before. I used the knowledge drawn from this book to write some technical papers (published on peer-reviewed journals and seminars proceedings). Specialized software, such as @-risk and crystal ball is not strictly needed to carry out the risk-analysis systems suggested by the author (but pretty advanced skills with excel or use of math softwares are required). The specific subject of the book is risk modelling by Monte Carlo Simulation and Bayesan analysis; it does not deal with fuzzy models or other uncertainty-propagation methods. I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested into the specific subject.

I purchased this book to learn to write simulation equations in excel but only found it was a manual ( type book ) with good information for a very expensive software I did not have....If you have RISK software, it is a great book to have... I returned my copy w/o scanning the entire book.

This book is great! I bought the book yesterday and already see immediate results in my pitching fundamentals and mechanics. Any age level can use this book, from little league to the pros (but I would assume the pros would aready know all the facts in this book). This book is broken down into chapters, dealing early with the mechanics to correctly pitch, and then later on, learning about the mental part of pitching. It goes over how to pitch fastballs, curveballs and sliders, and change-ups. THE LOUISVILLE SLUGGER COMPLETE BOOK OF PITCHNG is a great buy if you're a beginner just learning the game or a veteran trying to master the art of pitching!
A state of the art overview of pitching.......2002-03-24
In many ways this book is a like a summary of many of the ideas that you can read about elsewhere. The section stressing the importance of the change-up is a classic and is worth the price of the whole book. Illustrations are superb throughout and the book is full of priceless quotations from well known pitchers and coaches.
However I would not say 'forget about Tom House' because House still provide the more thorough run down on pitching mechanics, and the section on pitching mechanics is the only relative weakness that this otherwise excellent book has. It is however true that this book is a better place to start than House, whose "The Pitching Edge" remains high powered advanced reading for the serious pro.
You cannot go far wrong by reading this book. Highly recommended.
Thorough and easy-to-understand.......2000-03-21
This book is the best I've read on the subject of pitching. Forget about Tom House--this book includes everything you need to know to become more successful on the mound: pitching mechanics, how to throw particular pitches, the mental aspects of pitching, conditioning, and more in language that is accessible for any reader. Authors Myers and Gola are thorough in their presentation of pitching as both art and science. I highly recommend the book for pitchers, parents and coaches at any level from little league to professional.

This book contains MANY more magazines than the same year's Writer's Market, and is a much better value for the dollar. They even have hints for Query letters and many other suggestions in the front. Everybody in my writing class borrows this book from me whenever I'm not looking, even though they all have the Writer's Market. It's just so much more useful!

If there were more than five stars available, I'd use more to rate the importance of this book. For a novice writer, this is an absolute necessity. Contains everything (almost) one needs to know about 'getting published'.
Finding the Right Magazine to Sell Your Articles.......2006-08-29
Best of Magazine Markets is a good reference guide for freelance writers who wish to find appropriate publications in which to sell written material. The bulk of the pages in this guide feature listings of actual magazines and it is here that most freelancers will turn for some quick information on specific publications. This section is very helpful because it breaks down the vital statistics that are important to freelancers in determining whether or not to submit an article. Knowing the circulation, the target audience, and the frequency of publication is one thing, but it is also nice to know the chances for success for a freelance writer and this and other important facts are covered in the "Freelance Potential" section for the majority of the featured magazines. At a glance, an interested writer can quickly see what percentage of the articles are written by non- staff writers, the percentage of articles submitted by authors who are new to the magazine, and other helpful stats.
Magazines that are new to this year's edition are highlighted in one large listing (they also have a star next to their names in the individual listing, for quick reference) near the end of the book. There is also a listing of publications that have changed their names; publications that have changed their editorial focus; and magazines that are no longer published. In addition, there are two miscellaneous lists titled "Best magazines for first- time writers" and "Best for Unpublished writers". Again, these listings help to make the process easier for the freelancer by providing a quick summary of magazines that fit a given category or interest. My only complaint here is that there are not more listings. With these "best of" listings, for example, the book could have been more creative and devised several more categorical listings.
The first part of the book talks about the basics of freelancing and the right way to compose an article on a specific subject. This section isn't as helpful as it could be because it is far too brief. The way it is now, the 2006 edition includes only a tiny amount of material covering these basics; like resume submission, effective writing, copyrights, contracts, etc. This is far too little for a guide like this. True, most people who read this book will be looking at the individual magazine listings more than anything but there really needs to be more information at the beginning of the book to provide a good background into the freelance profession and to make the book more rounded and complete.
One other problem with a reference guide like this is that it becomes outdated quickly. Certain facts, like the magazine's name and its web site, will likely remain the same for a long time but other things like the percentage of non- staff writers, the pay rate, etc., are likely to change in a very short period of time. For these reasons, this is the type of reference guide that some readers might not want to purchase. If you're serious about selling your articles to magazines then I think it is still worthwhile to own a copy for easy reference but some might consider buying this book a waste of money due to the inevitability of change.
Freelance writing can be a good career option and/or a good second income source for others who already have an established career. Whether your writing interests cover a broad range of subjects or satisfy a smaller niche, selling your writing is critical if you want to make a serious effort at writing for a living. Best of Magazine Markets for Writers 2006 is a good starter's guide with some helpful facts about hundreds of publications. It isn't the perfect guide and it isn't as well- rounded as it could be. But it does provide the basic information needed to find the right magazines to sell your articles.

Good Racing Mystery.......2004-09-27
I thought that this was a good racetrack story. Beth, the main character, has no idea that the horse her parents have leased her for the summer is actually a stolen racehorse! Over the course of the book you go along with her on a racetrack mystery to find out why Charmin's owner is always trying to prevent him from racing. Great characters with a good storyline. Readers of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys are certain to love this one!

This book is the perfect book for any pre-teenager. It is about Beth and her summer adventurs at the farm in New Hampshire.
