5 out of 5 stars Very informative, great piece of work.......2005-07-21

The book is written by a person who lived in the Route 128 area and in the Silicon Valley. Besides the great insights and fantastic scholarly work, the book reflects the experience of seeing the development of both regions, not only through the eyes of a scholar, but also through the experiences that can only be gained by "being there."

5 out of 5 stars AWSOME!.......2001-09-23

The best book I have ever read concerning High Tech culture. Everyone should read this book to better understand how to motivate info exchange and networking among our society and world.

4 out of 5 stars california cool.......2001-03-03

saxenian argues that silicon valley's competitive advantage is the vast network of small firms that compose silicon valley and cross pollinate each other. she compares the valley to the route 128 area in boston which she classifies as detrimentally hierarchical, even puritanical.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Structural Analysis.......2000-02-21

Contrary to one of the other reviewer's comments, the importance of this book is in showing precicely that it is not the "endemic" culture of Silicon Valley, but rather the innovative institutions and networked relationships in Silicon Valley that explains the region's success. A great contribution to the literature on embeddedness and network forms of organization.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written, easy to follow and insightful........1999-10-10

Although she is a bit partial to the Silicon Valley area, the author presents the information in a very "down to earth", easy to read fashion - not too technical or too dry.

          Book Description

The presentations of this NATO Advanced Study Institute center around X-ray clusters of galaxies and their role in understanding the structure and evolution of the universe. Reminiscences of the beginning of the extra-solar X-ray astronomy some 30 years ago, of subsequent X-ray satellites which, among other discoveries, found galaxy clusters to be an important new class of intrinsically bright X-ray sources, and highlights from the most recent All Sky Survey by ROSAT serve as an introduction. The topics range from X-ray clusters and cluster environments to cluster masses and dynamics, cooling flows and chemical abundances, cluster lensing and the Sunyaev--Sel'dovich effect, cluster formation and evolution to large scale structure in the universe and cosmological parameters. The reviews, introducing the various topics, generally conclude with presentations of current and future work and are frequently followed by shorter research notes pertaining to ongoing projects. More than 200 figures illustrate the discussions, more than 20 tables and many quotations in the text provide numerical data for almost 100 clusters of galaxies and give new estimates for the cosmological parameters. Together with a good sample of equations, they constitute a useful collection of empirical and theoretical quantities and relations in extragalactic X-ray astronomy and cosmology.

          Book Description

Tropical forests have seen a tremendous growth in logging, mining, and oil and gas development over the past decades. These industries and their infrastructure, including roads and power lines, have a tremendous impact on the environment and often conflict with the growing concern for conservation, particularly the conservation of tropical biodiversity. However, development in the tropics is extremely important economically, both for developing and industrialized nations, and Footprints in the Jungle is an invaluable reference in this important and highly politicized debate. This volume looks at new approaches that lessen the impact of development. It collects numerous case studies by project managers, advocates, and researchers from major international companies, development agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations. It also examines the environmental and social impact of resource development, proposes a rigorous "best practices" approach, and analyzes a number of challenging technical, environmental, social, and legal issues.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging Private Sector in Environmental Protection.......2001-10-30

Business which is based on profit maximization is usually considered to be in conflict with the goals of environmental protection. This contradiction can be even more severe when the business owned by private sectors in developed countries extend their activities in far-away underdeveloped areas. The book looks at the environmental protection from business perspectives, especially extractive industries' involvement in biodiversity conservation. It explores numerous cases ("best practices") showing how business interests reconcile with environmental protection goals. The dynamics of various stakeholders was investigated to illustrate how the business strategic calculation of benefit and cost has been shaped by other stakeholders. According to the authors, there are two major reasons of why business starts to voluntarily involve in environmental protection: corporate reputation (intangible value) and eco-efficiency (tangible value). The book is a big contribution to the empirical studies of how business operation has been shaped by environmental protection and vice versa. I recommend the book to environmental experts, project managers and corporate environmentalists.

          5 out of 5 stars WHAT A PEACEFUL READ.......2006-12-13

This one is quite well done and is an excellent choice for the entry level reader. The text is quite simple, easy to follow and to the point, yet is, for some reason, very peaceful. You actually enjoy listening to the child read. I cannot say enough about the delightful paintings of the various animals in this book. Technically, the artist in spot on the money. I note that each picture leaves plenty of room open for discussion with the child as they read the book, or better yet, after they have read it several times. This is certainly one you will want to add to your child's library or your school library. Highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book for any level 1 beginning reader.......2006-09-29

In this beautiful book readers follow a variety of different wild animals home, as they seek shelter from a winter snowstorm. Vivid watercolor illustrations by Jacqueline Rogers set this level 1 beginning reader apart from others. Rogers uses contrasting warm and cold hues to distinguish between the cold outdoors during a winter storm and the coziness of home. Her realistic renderings will satisfy even the toughest critic, each page a new masterpiece. Young readers, especially animal lovers, will not only be captivated by the illustrations, but will also find Benjamin's simple text a comfort. Repetitive words and theme, and use of various action verbs keep the reader interested. More complex words are kept for the latter part of the book. This book will remind all readers of how peaceful yet powerful nature is. It is the perfect book to enjoy while curled up with a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day.

5 out of 5 stars An enchanting first reader.......1998-12-13

This book evokes the peace of winter in the woods. Animals travel home, each in his/her own way. We see the animal moving in the woods, then snuggled up in its own cozy home. The illustrations are beautiful. I've purchased two copies so far--one for my sons and one for a cousin. I'd highly recommend this peaceful book to anyone with a beginning reader in the family.

                Book Description

Footprints of the Forest is the clearest and most comprehensive account to date of the relationship between an Amazonian people and their botanical environment.

Based on Balee's ten years of ethnological and botanical research among the Tupi-Guarani-speaking Indians, especially the Ka'apor, of eastern Amazonia, this book documents the ways in which the Ka'apor use, manage, name, and classify many hundreds of plant species found in their habitat. From a historical and ecological perspective, Balee shows that Ka'apor ethnobotany represents an interpenetration of Amazonian culture and nature and thus constitutes a domain of scientific inquiry in its own right.

The substantive chapters explore the history of the Ka'apor and their present modes of land use, the Ka'apor's influence on the composition of fragile forests in their habitat, and Ka'apor forest management practices. Balee also discusses the nomenclature and classification of indigenous plants as well as the cognitive aspects of magical, medicinal, and poisonous plants.

Footprints of the Forest concludes with an explanatory framework for understanding the similarities and differences among the ethnobotanical systems of diverse Amazonian peoples and ten cross-referenced appendices, which will aid those readers interested in specific Amazonian plants and their native names, habitats, and exact uses by the Ka'apor.

If your looking for a book that lasts, the Natures Footprints books are a sure thing. A few lines of text and lovely pictures of each animal and its footprints. The real hook for both my kids is the "follow natures footprints" pages - they never tired of following them. A great buy for any child ages 2-6.

                        Description:
Canopy height distributions were created from small-footprint airborne laser scanner data collected over 51 georeferenced field sample plots with a size of 232.9 m^2 and 27 large test plots with an average size of 3435 m^2. Laser data were acquired under leaf-on and leaf-off canopy conditions. The plots covered stand conditions from young forest to mature forest. The plots were divided into two categories, i.e., coniferous forest dominated by spruce and pine, and mixed forest with an average proportion of deciduous species of 31-42%. Height percentiles, mean and maximum height values, coefficients of variation of the heights, and canopy density at different height intervals above the ground were computed from the laser-derived canopy height distributions. In the mixed forest, corresponding metrics derived from the two laser data acquisitions were compared. In general, canopy metrics derived from the last returns were more affected by canopy conditions than the first return data. Furthermore, canopy height measures of the lower and intermediate parts of the canopy were more affected than maximum canopy height, and the variability of the height distribution tended to increase from leaf-on to leaf-off conditions. The coniferous plots were used to demonstrate to what extent canopy properties derived from airborne lasers may be affected by sensor-specific characteristics. The same laser system was used during the two acquisitions, but the repetition frequency was upgraded from 10 to 33 kHz in between the two missions. Comparison of the two acquisitions showed that the first return measurements of canopy height tended to be unaffected or shifted somewhat upwards by system upgrade and ground penetration was reduced, whereas the last return data indicated unaffected or downwards shifted canopy heights and increased penetration.

5 out of 5 stars BEST cruising sailing book out there !!!.......2007-07-31

I am a cruiser who likes to learn how to trim my sails right. Other sail trim books are too technical and gear towards racers (99% of them are like that).

This book is a very easy read and very easy to understand with lots of photos and drawings to help you get the point fast.

Excellent Read. A MUST for all sailors

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Cruiser.......2007-01-09

This is the third book on sail trim that I have read (some of us catch on slowly). I am a cruising sailor that races once a year and am interested in maximizing sail performance any time. I often sail with a buddy that really knows sail trim and can often get an extra knot with a tweak of the halyard, outhaul and genoa lead, so I've seen the difference small changes can make. This is an easily understood book, not overly technical. Dedicated racers would want one of the other more technical books.

I first looked at this book while at B&N. At first glance I liked the book but postponed the purchase for some weeks. I was looking at book on Amazon and just had to have it. I have never regreted the decision and expect this book to become a classic over time.

For those sailors intent on mastering the art portion of sailing this is the best book I have seen in years and perhaps ever. All I have to say is thanks for the words and better yet the pictures in this book.

Presented in a friendly, accessible tone as accessible to lay readers as to seasoned sailors, Sailpower is a superb guide to honing one's sailing skills and highly recommended for anyone considering the hobby or simply wanting to know more about what it is like.

why is amazon still selling this? yes, it was my mistake to buy the almanac from a year earlier, but COME ON.

otherwise, llewellyn products are always a crapshoot - some are very very good, some are pretty lamentable. this one is a nice collection and it keeps magic on the mind.

My fiance is Wiccan and is she loves this Almanac. It's filled with many spells, information, and tidbits of trivia and facts, that the Wiccan in your life is sure to love. While nothing groundbreaking, it can be a great reading from the novice to the long-time wiccan. I've even enjoyed reading it at times. A classic work that's sure to grace your new year everytime that the new one comes out. Well worth the buy.
