Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the Great Depression.......2006-03-27

Smiley has done a fantastic job with this book. It is well organized and very easy to read. He makes a statement and then follows up with the data and information necessary to support that statement. The second chapter on the cause of the great depression is my favorite and after finishing the book I went through that chapter again to really drill the information in. This book should be required reading for all college students. I normally give books away after reading them but I won't be giving this one away.

5 out of 5 stars new look at country's worst crisis.......2004-03-06

Based on new theories, Smiley has re-examined and re-assessed the forces that led to and prolonged the Great Depression. In clear non-technical prose, he shows what happened and why.

This short book (163 pages plus sources and index) is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 gives a brief overview of how the worldwide depression began and how it created a domino effect throughout Europe and the U.S. Nothing new here-- in fact, this is basic stuff any high schooler should know.

Chapter 2 is a more detailed examination of the economic crisis and the forces which led to it. Smiley explains the situation in basic terms that anyone can understand, allowing us to see the tragedy unfolding step by step.

Chapters 3 and 4 show how President Roosevelt (who had little knowledge or experience of economics) attempted to pull the country out of this deep economic slump. Though some programs were successful, some were not, and only serve to create a depression within a depression in the mid-30s.

Chapter 5 examines the legacy of the governmental response, and how economic policies initiated during this period has affected this country for decades afterward, and how certain government programs still exist long after their usefulness has passed. An examination of post-war analysis shows how Keynesian economic theory and government studies have misinterpreted the factors which brought this country back to recovery. He also examines the question of whether such an event can happen again, concluding that-- based on subsequent economic downturns-- it probably won't, though it can happen again should future leaders ignore the warning signs and lessons of the past.

A fascinating and rewarding book, even for those who have little or no knowledge of economics.

4 out of 5 stars Eye opening.......2004-03-04

Smiley discusses the cause the the Great Depression, and the effects of the New Deal in prolonging it. He summarizes the findings of the latest academeic research, over the past few decades. He does this well and quite clearly, in a non-polemical way.

No math is involved.

5 out of 5 stars Draws upon recent technical analysis.......2003-10-13

Gene Smiley's Rethinking The Great Depression blends history and economics in a survey which draws upon recent technical analysis to consider new ideas about the roots of the Depression. The efforts of the New Deal to combat the crisis, the underlying foundations of the Depression, and misguided monetary policies which prolonged it accompany refutes to popular beliefs - such as the positive view of World War II as a key to ending the crisis.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, well orginized, and a fantastic read........2003-06-04

This book is only 175 pages, but dense in material. Smiley argues that FDR's New Deal, actually prolonged the Great Depression, and created a "depression within a depression." FDR, and his advisors, self nicknamed "the brains trust", put their New Deal emphasis in stiffling the free market forces, that were actually recovering the American economy from the world depression, of the early 1900's. Also, Smiley sheds light on the false notion that war is good for the economy. This book is written in such an understandable and concise style, that even the bibliography reads like a integrated chapter, where Smiley explains what he used within each reference.

I would recommend this book as a first read, or primer, for the Great Depression. I really enjoyed it.

      Book Description

With the emergence of a powerful new breed of organization--the knowledge organization--comes a bold new challenge to the old ways of managing people. Workers with special cutting-edge knowledge and the ability to transform it into marketable goods and services can not be managed the old command-and-control way, nor even by some of the more enlightened ways developed since then. Only new ways, and old ways updated and adapted to special new situations, can work. Only in this way can innovation and productivity--the crucial ingredients for success in knowledge-based organizations--be harnessed. Indeed, it is the capacity to innovate, not the infusion of huge amounts of capital, that is the true predictor of success in these new companies. Just as the baby boomers working in traditional settings differ from those who went before, so do the later generations of X-ers and Y-ers differ from them. Their sociology and psychology are totally different, and Amar shows specifically how and why. The result is an in-depth presentation of whom these knowledge workers are and how to select, adapt, and develop new concepts, principles, strategies, and techniques to achieve the unique successes they are capable of delivering. Amar highlights the difference between these new, knowledge-based organizations and their traditional counterparts. He makes clear with examples, anecdotes, and other illustrative material that the driving force behind them is their ability to innovate. These organizations attract special types of people, and, as Amar points out, they have their own ways of seeing the world and doing things in it. They tend to decry and defy tradition. Amar explores the sociology and psychology of these startling new workers, and provides management with a full bag of tools to interact with them, including ways to redesign work itself as well as the entire organization, plus new ways to approach the commonplace functions of decision-making, leading, motivating, and controlling. He also provides special insights into the modification of behavior, and a means to assess when it can be useful and productive.

Life presents us with hundreds of variations on a handful of interpersonal challenges. Plenty of people save these issues for therapy sessions where vulnerabilities are slowly uncovered and swaddled in layers of talk. But what if there was a swifter, more dynamic way to cut to the chase? Psychologist Marilyn Mason stumbled upon one such route when she agreed to tag along as the therapist in charge of handling sticky emotions among Minnesota medical students during a weekend introduction to rock climbing. Pushing her not-so-athletic body to find handhold after impossible handhold on the way up a crumbling wall and hanging off ropes held by others quickly brought Mason face-to-face with core issues about commitment, failure, and trust. Rock climbing, she found, "uncovered stored feelings, dormant strengths, failings and unmet truths that I had buried."

Building on these revelations, Mason helped form an adventure psychology company that depended on the physical extremes of trekking, dog-sledding, rafting, and cross-country skiing to encourage people to explore the "wilderness within." In Seven Mountains, she uses a series of climbs she made in such places as Tanzania, Tibet, and the Caucuses to coach readers about commitment, endurance, and pushing past fears that tie us to unsatisfying acts and lives. Well-written journal excerpts chronicle self-doubts, and moments from various adventure trips help elucidate such points as the paradoxical generosity in holding back on offers of support to allow for the growth that comes from struggle. --Francesca Coltrera

          Book Description

Marilyn Mason, a licensed psychologist and university faculty member, was far from being an outdoors woman when she participated in her first rock climbing trip on the north shore of Minnesota's Lake Superior. But beyond the exhilarating physical challenge, she soon discovered key elements of climbing that were essential in the challenges we all face every day. Mason went on to climb majestic peaks in Tibet, Nepal, Tanzania, the Caucasus, and China. Beginning each chapter with a diary excerpt dramatizing her climbs, she discusses her findings in the context of human relationships--in work, love, family, friendships, and community. In Seven Mountains the decisions to risk, to face our fears, to trust, to ask for support, to overcome our "stuckness," and to let go become starting points for an inspirational examination of what matters most to us.
Seven Mountains was praised by authors Robert Bly, Richard Leider, and polar explorer Ann Bancroft.
Seven Mountains is a unique approach to personal growth expressed through the metaphor of mountain climbing.

If you are one of those people who always see these runners and envy them but are afraid to start because the very few times you tried you almost felt your heart coming out of your ears then this is the book for you.

The book is exactly what it claims to be, for beginners. It is full of motivational facts and answers a lot of your questions as you progress. I started browsing it in Spring after my doctor told me that I am in a pre-diabetic stage ( I am insulin resistant and have PCOS) and have to do something about it. In summer I finished a 5k, walked most of it, and got my insulin level back to normal and now I go out for a run almost every day for 30 to 60 minutes, no walking! And I have started training for half marathon. I am now combining this running skill with sensible diet, also described in book, and the 30lbs I had to lose are melting down.

The 24 week walk/run plan is a realistic one. The quality of pictures is really good and it does a great job in keeping you motivated. I recommend it to anyone who wants to start running but doesn't know where to start.

P.S. I am completing this review. I ran my very first half-marathon on April 29th, 2007 and I have this book to thank for most of it. I am a runner now.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful and motivating book!!.......2005-05-22

There is one chapter in this book that contains motivating quotes from experienced runners that reflect upon what they wish they knew when they began running. I found that to be extremely inspirational (but it was only 1 of the 40 chapters)!! The rest of the book consists of important facts about the health benefits of running, help with time managment, a section on getting started, nutrition, training and more. Amby Burfoot gives great advice about the importance of training your mind along with your body, which helps those who may get discouraged at the beginning as well as those who need an extra push now and then. In the back there are effective training plans for the already active person as well as the beginner. I would strongly recommend this book to those who are interested in running for any reason because the book covers everything you need to know.

I picked up this book five months ago when I started running as an out of shape beginner. Amby Burfoot's knowledge and advice gave me the base that I needed to accomplish many of my goals and I am now in much better shape, running daily and loving every minute of it.

2 out of 5 stars Great for motivation, but lacking in real content.......2005-04-06

The first 6 chapters of this book are made up of mostly quotes from runners. These are not always particularly insightful or helpful. I found it to have far, far too many of those, "well, DUH!" kind of comments. Not much detail or specifics at least in the first part of the book. I finally found something worth reading in the seventh chapter but by that point I was so annoyed that I didn't care. Needed editing. Others are better.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Resource..........2005-07-25

I am a recent grad and working in a engineering firm where I am constantly looking for rules of thumb, helpful design guidelines, and data pertaining to my projects. This book offers a wealth of hvac information that is organized and extremely valuable for entry hvac engineers.

3 out of 5 stars unorganized but occasionally useful.......2005-03-04

This book did not live up to my expectations, yet over the years I have used it on occasion. Typically, for conversions, steam tables, general rules of thumb. If you have studied for the PE exam, you probably have most of what this book has to offer.

1 out of 5 stars I made the wrong decision.......2004-01-23

I was very disappointed to get this book.
I've gone through it and found it is a book of waste money and time. It is hard for me to get this book returned to get my money back because I am in Australia but I'll try.
If you like HVAC, go try other books, not this one.
