Book Description
A showcase of the sixty trends that will have the biggest impact on business in the next decade
In Sixty Trends in Sixty Minutes (A Brandweek Book), top marketer Sam Hill, author of the bestselling Radical Marketing, highlights the trends that will have the biggest impact on marketing, brand management, and product development within the next decade. He separates the momentary fads from the lasting movements and reveals why trends matter, where they come from, and how to exploit them. He also describes the ten factors that will influence current trends and trends to come, such as exponential population growth, urbanization, interconnectedness, and the decreasing role of work in our lives. With these valuable insights in hand, business leaders will learn how to differentiate their product on the shelf, tap into specific markets, meet consumers' desires for "authentic" products, and much more. Hill also guides managers in conducting trend workshops identical to those offered by his consulting group at top-dollar prices. Timely, relevant, and global in its scope, this book offers entrepreneurs and managers new ideas and techniques for finding success today and in the future.

A good first step to what's coming next.......2003-08-25
This book looks at sixty trends the author sees as being one of the next big things. Hill doesn't go for the bigger "mega-trends" but takes those and picks out smaller more manageable, personal trends. Some of these in no particular order are: interconnectedness, Peter Pan-ism and mercenary management. For each trend he gives the factors and factoids, implications and the opportunity. This gives you what he thinks are what the facts are, what it means and how you can use it. This gives the book a usefulness that is good. The problem I have is that I see some of the trends as not that useful or groundbreaking. Some of them also have a duh factor. As in duh tell me something I don't know. I suppose with 60 trends this is inevitable and it does give the book a something for everybody quality. Overall I give the book a B-. A useful first step if you want to see what might be coming next but I wouldn't bet the farm on anything in this book by itself.
More than enough content.......2002-12-12
Worth 5 stars for two reasons:
1) Something for everyone, and probably something different with each reading, or section. I agree with another reviewer that it can read like the contents of many WSJ articles - but that is the point. The premise is delivering a highly subjective list of trends that have business potential/ impact. There's enough content here for a slew of articles, books and business plans. And I'm surprised that he wrote the book first!
2) Refreshingly honest. In contrast to so many business books, this is basically a personal journal of discovery.
So many books read like the product of a team of consultants and editors trying to support a marginal concept or framework . This reads more like the transcript of a long dinner conversation (and perhaps a bottle of wine or two). Can you imagine Porter, Hamel, Peters, et al suggesting that their books would make a good bathroom read? Or identifying businesses and individuals that are heading for failure? I didn't always agree with his opinions, but must congratulate him for not holding back on any topic.
Full disclosure: I bought the book because I remember working with Sam (many) years ago in a consulting project. Perhaps that's another reason I enjoyed it, like a conversation with him many years later - and clearly he's had a world of experiences since then.
I think a valid criticism of the book is that at times it seems he is (like the old Steven Wright joke) "trying to draw a map of the world - to scale." But he does seem to have succeeded in sketching out some major landmarks. Give the book 60 or even 120 minutes. Worth the effort.
Compendium of Trends w/o Forecasting or Identification Tools.......2002-10-23
Sam Hill's Sixty Trends in Sixty Minutes is a panoply of facts and figures related to societal, technological, and business trends. While insightful and quite interesting to read, it guides the reader little on identifying trends and tying together all of the data presented. The author suggests the latter is left for the reader to synthesize. Yet, it is not clear how the reader could apply the large amount of data to any specific objective.
The author does have an "opportunity" section after each trend, which lists voids that can be addressed by new products and services within that particular field. Although, for any one trend example, a subject matter expert in that industry should already have identified the trend and related causes. A skilled product manager may be able to identify a new audience for an existing product using the examples. Likewise, as an investor or someone considering a career switch, you might find some interesting material by which you can base your decision.
As someone obsessed with statistical data and a voracious consumer of business periodicals, I found that most of the material was interesting but not entirely new. In fact, it feels like a collection of Wall Journal Articles with opinions and supplementary explanations. If you haven't had the time to keep up with the WSJ, Forbes, and Business Week, Sixty Trends in Sixty Minutes will fill in your knowledge gap. However, if you are looking for specific tools to forecast trends within your industry, you might want to read other works, such as Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping Point.

Book Description
This book investigates strategy formulation by comparing military & business practices. It assesses whether the strategy process in the business field also prevails in the military context. Based on interviews and case studies, the author uses a framework of influences including organization, leadership, risk, theory and context to consider the areas of similarity and difference. While significant parallels can be found, greater importance is placed on the formulation of aims and goals, and the identification and training of leaders in the military. This provides valuable lessons for business strategists.

Book Description
Daylight in the Swamp is the bush memoirs of Selwyn Dewdney, a noted Canadian artist and recorder of native rock art. His two great loves, art and the Canadian north, come together in this book. His respect for native culture and art is reflected in his own work, his insight into native rock art, and his passion for canoeing and the northern experience. The third theme of the book is history spanning the period from 1910 through to the 1970s during which the old north largely vanished. Dewdney was there to record the images of forgotten dreams painted on rocks and cliffs throughout the Canadian Shield. Thanks to these memoirs we are all there to witness these things with Dewdney.

Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to cycling........2007-05-13
This book is a good introduction to cycling. It will give good tips on how to set up your riding position, ride securely, differences between mountain biking and road biking, buying appropriate clothing, etc. I'm not a total newbie on MTB but i learned a lot with this book.
I gave 5 stars to this book because as the title says, this is a book for the new cyclist, so if you are a more advanced rider, you can still find it useful but you should look out to something more specific.
A good book to have.......2006-09-13
Nobody knows everything. Every now and then even the most well versed cyclist has some questions. Put those people to the beginners who need to know everything and the sooner the better and you've got the group who will benefit from this book.
The research that was done to put it together seems excellent. There isn't anything that seems to be left to chance. Of course there could be a little loss when the person isn't aware of a proper name for a part or technique but that will come.
I recommend this book to any cyclist.
EVERYONE needs a little help every now and then!.......2006-06-26
VERY informative little book, I must say. While some of the instructions go a little "over the top", length-wise,(changing a flat tire), it is always feasible to be too"wordy", than not"wordy" enough. Basic maintenance is crucial to enjoying a bike, and to think nothing is going to happen to your bike while riding, is asking for trouble. This book should be standard reading for all bike enthusiasts....mountain AND road. It answers most of the beginning cyclist's questions with easy to read text. Even seasoned "veterans" will appreciate the full spectrum of subjects included in this paperback.
Book Description
Experienced road cyclists and mountain bikers share the knowledge and tips they wish they had when they started out. They'll help you avoid the common mistakes that can cause frustration and setbacks, and they'll teach you what every new rider should know with skills you can put to use-- starting with your very first ride!Discover how to:* Choose the right bike by answering three basic questions.* Ride safely with traffic.* Prevent and treat ailments like saddle sores and stiff knees.* Avoid the most common mistakes of new cyclists.* Fit riding into the busiest of schedules.* Train for a century.* Fix flats fast and perform basic maintenance.* Become a better cyclist-- in one afternoon!
Customer Reviews:
Buy before you buy the bike.......2005-08-20
If you haven't bought a bike in years, this is the book. Helps explains bike terms, differences between road and mountain bikes and how to fit a bike. Also goes over riding and health-related topics. Good way to get started.
A Must for Every Cyclist.......2001-06-19
This book is a colection of articles that are a must read for every rider who wants to get a headstart on their cycling education. In one neat little book is advice on a range of subjects like how to buy and fit your bike, simple repairs, riding techniques, training and nutrition. I have purchased and given away at least a dozen of these books to new riders and they all agree that this book made it so much easier to learn and enjoy the sport. It should be required reading by every bicycle rider.

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO MANNERS, REVISED AND UPDATED TO ACCOMODATE TODAY'S HIGH-SPEED LIFESTYLES, SHIFTING VALUES, AND EVER-EVOLVING DEFINITION OF FAMILY.
Letitia Baldrige is universally recognized as the country's leading authority on executive, domestic, and social manners. She began writing on manners and protocol during her diplomatic service in 1949, and she has been hailed on the cover of Time magazine as "America's leading arbiter of manners." Originally published in 1989, her Complete Guide to New Manners has now been thoroughly revised and updated to incorporate the changing social conventions and enormous technological advances of the past fifteen years.
Baldrige was the first etiquette writer to advise extensively on the subject of manners in the workplace. With her legendary background in both the government and business worlds, she remains the prime authority on the integration of goals that often seem at odds with one another -- namely, family, work, and pleasure. Baldrige provides fresh guidelines on etiquette at work and in every form of communication, from letters to emails to cell phone calls.
She also updates the way we approach the traditional rites of passage -- weddings, funerals, religious ceremonies, gatherings large and small. Here are authoritative answers to the etiquette questions and issues involved in nontraditional family relationships -- stepfamilies, adult children returning home, elderly parents moving in, gays and lesbians in the family, dating for the newly single, and the myriad complications that spring from divorce.
Through it all, Baldrige does not forget the essence of manners: they are an expression of love and care, and they are under our control. New Manners for New Times is a comprehensive encyclopedia that will lead readers confidently and correctly through the maze of lifestyles, customs, business, and ways of relating to others in this new, complex millennium. But it is, above all, a very personal statement.

Most Useful Book EVER!!.......2007-10-03
This book is terrific. It has everything in it. Before I do anything (go to a wedding, a funeral, write a thank you note or condolence note, throw a party), I look it up in this book. It really is wonderful. I never feel as though I don't know what to do. She gives advice for how to dress, how to act, what to say when you are at a loss for words, and anything else you need.
I'm not an upper-crust socialite, and this book is my guide to life. I love it and would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone.
A great pickup.......2007-01-12
If you're looking for just one etiquette reference, this is the one. It touches on everything without being intimidatingly exhaustive. Baldridge offers additional helpful thoughts on situations one is likely to encounter in today's life--multicultural celebrations, funerals in other traditions, wedding invitations to same-sex couples--without being sappy or condescending. Having perused several similar books, I also found that this one has the best treatment of business and professional etiquette. Easy to read, entertaining, helpful, and never loses sight of the main point. Was an excellent gift for my soon-to-graduate-college sister--those pesky etiquette dilemmas start popping up quickly.
A very specialized, uppercrust view of manners.......2007-01-03
Author Letitia Baldrige worked as Social Secretary to an ambassador in Paris, Special Assistant to an ambassador in Rome, and the Social Secretary to the White House and chief of staff for Jaqueline Kennedy - and this book reads like it.
If you live on Manhattan's swanky Upper Eastside, throw lavish dinner parties for visiting dignitaries, and vie for a place on a high profile hospital or not-for-profit board this is the book for you. If, on the other hand, you feel a little clueless about the basic rules of etiquette and would like to use the right fork at a fancy dinner party, you might want to try a book like "Etiquette for Dummies." Baldrige comes across as a very warm and friendly person. She write eloquently and engagingly about the very heart of etiquette - respecting other people's feelings and acting accordingly. But most readers really don't need a book of this length that outlines the proper behavior for dinner with the president (no exaggeration). Comprehensive - yes. Entirely practical to most mere mortals - no.
Manners Are Lacking In Today's World........2005-11-23
In this updated guide to ettiquette for modern times, she addresses marriage etiquette in "blended" families. In her NEW Etiquette for Executives, which is a bit outdated, a woman should dress according to her profession. Seeing a woman move up the ranks at the local transit system, going from old-fashioned denim dress with boots to cover the rest of her, to dressing like a common street walker, I had to make a comment, "You need to dress professional." Her boss, attired in orange pants and ball cap at a special "Meet the Manager" day, dressed down to what he perceived is the level of the riders; he asked me, "Do you think I should be wearing a suit?" and I merely said, "I will tell you what I did Ms. P, "You should dress professional." The rudeness of some transit employees show their disrespect for the older person of different races and for their job. When we get on that bus, our lives are in the hands of these rude, surly, prejudiced persons who say derogatory remarks to and about passengers in front of others. They can refuse to stop to pick you up at their discretion, and they take advantage of that. It's not just bad manners. It shows how regressed a certain percentage of the population has become. They are ignorant and uneducated, and show it.
A man should never wear frayed shirt collars and cuffs no matter what the occasion is. I saw a local celebrity on the sidewalk outside his office with a torn place on his pants leg. Some people have no pride in their work or position in the community. Her advice: "Know who you are" and dress accordingly. In the Northeast, you must never wear white shoes and accessories after Labor Day, but that doesn't apply to the South.
A good rule for both sexes is 'Never dress in clothes that are too tight; they make a thin person look gaunt and a large person twice as heavy. Well said.' Those people not interested in how they are perceived dress according to the weather and, even in public, wear ill-fitting casual wear. If they could just see themselves from the rear!
Ms. Baldrige has lived a glamorous life as a diplomat for the United States government, has been there, done that, and knows how to help others to act in a manner befitting a Queen. Her non-fiction book, OF DIAMONDS AND DIPLOMATS, relates her years with the Kennedy administration.
A Tastefully Inclusive, Dignified Way To Live.......2004-02-13
I originally requested this book for Christmas because of both Ms. Baldrige's conservative reputation and the fact that it was said to address the roles of gays and lesbians in the family. I was not disappointed. It is a fabulous general etiquette book that my mother could respect and would read. And it includes my lifestyle too!
With so much controversy going about these days regarding the definition of family, Ms. Baldrige provides us with guidelines that allow all of us to congregate in peace and without shame. Her anecdotes effectively illustrate her points and are quite funny at times. She also obviously knows how to have a good time-- and in a way that is level-headed and won't alienate those at the more conservative end of the spectrum.
Ms. Baldrige is one of those sort of people you really have to work hard to dislike. And her years of experience lead to a wise commentary that is hardly dated. In her own way, she gives all family members permission to love one another without a bunch of anxiety over who is doing what that isn't anyone's business anyway. And she provides all the tools you need, in the form of advice, to throw a great party. When's the next family reunion? I actually want to go now! :-)

Customer Reviews:
THE BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-11-22
I must admit - after I bought it, I blamed myself for wasting money, and I put the book aside for about...oh, let's say 2 years. I found it somewhere, somehow, and I didn't have anything to do, so I sorta started the book. From that day, I was known as "The Book Girl" in my class. My nose was always in the book, even in class, lunch, and recess! After I finished the book, I read it over and over and over and over.... I'm still reading it right now......Trust me, it never gets old.
Unexpectedly Good!.......1999-09-07
When I first started this book, I found it boring and I wanted to stop reading it but something told me not to and I was curious about the ending. The main character Bobby Lee grows on you and so do her friends and little town. It is magical if you really let yourself in. I read it in 2 days :-)
Very Well Done.......1999-01-30
Bobby Lee Pomeroy is a sympathetic, believable character who comes alive under the sure touch of Sherry Bunin. The book is rich with descriptive, appropriate figures of speech, even to two (anachronistic) uses of "pissed off." This is the perfect book for readers who themselves aspire to become writers. Highly recommended.
