On my shelf for 10 years.......2002-07-11
I read this wonderful book 10 years ago while planning to become an innkeeper. Now that I am a successful innkeeper, I refer to it constantly and am incredibly grateful to the authors. I credit the information learned in this book as a reason for our success. It helped us ask the right questions, particularly about whether or not we had the personalities to make it in this diffficult business. Also, it was invaluable in creating our business plan. Don't open a B & B before reading this.
Submitted by the author of: "I'm Living Your Dream Life: The Story of a Northwoods Resort Owner."
So - You want to be an innkeeper?.......2001-05-24
You betcha!!! My middle name is Innes (no joke!!!!!) but it might as well be "inns"(!!!!!), that's how much I wanted to be an innkeeper, and Mary Davies' book is "inn" (!!!!!!) the right place "inn" (!!!) my bookshelf. No, but seriously, with my sense of humour and my wife Marjorie's overly solicitous manner and ability to project her prurient judgmentalism and dissaproval wordlessly, we had a headstart in that we were the perfect couple to run a Bed-and-Breakfast. Even the best need a hand though, and this book is a must-read for those who don't want to make a dog's dinner of this rewarding career.
Best financial advice in a short book!.......1999-04-26
As an accountant, I really appreciated the financial planning section of the book. It has helped us to realistically assess different properties in making our investment decision. This book is a must for anyone seriously considering a bed and breakfast or a small inn. Being able to estimate costs and revenues up front is imperative for success.
Great book for potential inn-keepers.......1998-07-23
This book separated the romantic notions of owning a B&B from the business end. It was eye opening and very informative.
Fabulous and comprehensive from all aspects.......1998-04-14
Very comprehensive. Is better for those considering an "inn" vs. renting the spare bedroom.

A bad summary of a great book - pass.......2006-06-28
This is nothing more than a brief summary of Flawless Consulting, and not even a complete or true summary. Very brief overview of very basic concepts done in a very dry and unimaginative manner, nothing new or exciting here. In summary, a total waste of significant money ($50).

Customer Reviews:
What an experience!.......2003-06-10
First of all, the song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written! I am not exaggerating. The first time I heard it, I cried. Growing up Catholic, this song meant so much but it doesn't matter what denomination you are affiliated with. We all understand the fear and struggle when asked to follow God's plan but we know that he will bring us through. That is what this song is about. It is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever written!
The story that Amy Grant writes to accompany the song is heart-wrenching. It's a modern-day version of the song. This song will bring comfort to anyone going through trials. This is an especially great gift fot expecting mothers.
I highly recommend this CD/book to all customers. It also makes a very nice and unique gift. It's for both the music lover and book lover.
Breath of Heaven.......2002-01-19
I was introduced to the song my senior year of high school when my choir sang it for the yearly High School Christmas concert. The teacher spent a class prior to the concert explaining the meaning of the song. I, and many others, were humbled when we discovered the power of the message that we were conveying. On the night of the concert it took all my skill as a singer not to cry as I sang the song. Just this last christmas I recieved the book and CD from my grandma. Even though I recieved several great gifts, it was this book and CD that touched me the deepest. The book gave the song a greater depth and meaning, and hearing the song again was a magnificent experience. I would recommend this book to everyone, but especially to women. It offers a message of strength and hope in uncertain times.
Beautiful book.......2001-12-21
I received this book in the mail and was excited about it because I had not really wanted to spend the money on it, but did want to read it. I have to say I was nearly brought to tears and certainly humbled by the experience of reading Amy's words and listening to her beautiful song in which she pays such a loving and reverent tribute to Mary. I remember Amy saying once at a concert just before she sang the song "Mary was not better than anyone else...she was just willing." I STRONGLY urge you to read this book and then sit and listen to the song while looking at the incredible illustrations.
A Beautiful Book with a timeless message!!.......2001-12-21
I got this book at the annual Amy Grant Christmas concert but was very happy when I saw it on Amazon the next day so I could buy it for presents for family and friends. The book tells the story of how Amy came up with the lyrics to one of the most powerful Christmas songs ever written "Breath of Heaven." The song is about Mary and the way she must have felt with all the responsibilty of carrying the savior.
The book itself is very colerful with pictures and verses throughout it. And the best part of the book in My opinion is the Story written about Amy on the reasons behind the lyrics to the song! As an added bonus the Book comes with the Single to the Song the book is about as perfprmed by Amy! A must for any Amy Grant fan or Christmas lovers!

Book Description
Apocalyptic, lyrical, and erotically charged, Sor Juana or the Breath of Heaven is a novel of genius, obsession, and mystery surrounding the Baroque-era Mexican nun, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. When she died in 1695, she was arguably the greatest writer working in any European tongue, though she never lived outside her native Mexico.
Juana was a child prodigy whose beauty and wit provoked a sensation at the vice-regal court in Mexico City. At nineteen, though still a royal favorite, she chose to enter a convent. In the twenty years that followed, Juana created plays, theological arguments, and graceful, often sensuous poetry — insisting upon a life of the mind for women, while jousting with the enforcers of the Inquisition. Then, at forty, Juana signed a vow of silence in her own blood, five years before succumbing to plague.
This book plumbs the mystery of why such a gifted writer silenced herself. In his remarkable debut, Anderson unfolds three intimate journeys: a great poet’s withdrawal from the world; a man’s forced march to self-knowledge; and a mystic’s pilgrimage into modern Mexico, where the bones of the past continually intrude into a present built on the ruins of the vanquished.

Inspiring.......2003-12-03
I read this book years ago while kayaking in the Sea of Cortez. The winds were always on our minds, determining when we could paddle, when we would go to shore...how much sand was in our rice and fish. The book was a wonderful and interesting examination of more aspects of wind than I could have imagined. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in thinking about why things are the way they are in our natural world.
The Book That Wanted You to Find It.......2003-11-08
You find a book by chance, just cruising the shelves at the library, the evocative title makes you pick it up. You fall in love with it. It inspires you to write a poem. You return it. Then you forget the author, the title -- key word searches come up with nothing. You've lost it. You would be haunted by a book like this.
And so ten years later when you happened upon it at Half-Price books, it was like finding a ring that you'd thought would be lost forever.
I adore this scientific, philosophical, endearing, poetic, book.
A natural read.......2000-06-27
By rhythm, content, and just plain curious facts this is one of the best nature books around. Whether the discussion is of the winds of Jupiter or the winds of the Sahara, Watson is consistently engaging and erudite. Don't miss the appendix with the best list of winds from around the world, including Foehn, Zephyr, Sirrocco and Santa Ana.
It's hands-down the best text book I ever read........1999-05-04
It covers everything about the wind you can imagine, and then some. Required reading for the seasoned meteorologist and the weather-watching dabbler alike. Not only powerfully informative but an extemely intriguing and pleasurable read. One of my top ten all time favorite books.

Customer Reviews:
Good information but a little long-winded.......2006-09-08
The problem with reviews is they reflect the personality of the reviewer. So, take everything I write with a grain of salt.
I have a problem with someone taking 20 minutes to explain something to me that really only takes 2 minutes. I feel that Dave took 222 pages to say what could've been said in about half that. A great deal of the information is repeated, more than once. Now, I know in some educational circles, this is the best way to teach. However, he could've said it once and suggested rereading the book a few times.
Although the author has a homey, familiar writing style, a lot of the material is very dry. So much so, that about a third of the way through I demoted the book to bathroom reading.
Now having said all that, there IS a lot of really good information in this book. The problem is geting through the whole thing to extract what is useful. For a shorter more-to-the-point, see John Gierachs' book on small stream fishing.
I do still recommend the book, particularly for newcomers to fly-fishing for trout.
Rosenbauer did it better.......2005-04-05
Tom Rosenbauers "Orvis Guide to Reading Trout Streams" is a much better read with more comprehensive, useful, understandable information. Dave Hughes has a few decent tying books and his "Small Streams" book, in my opinion, is his best work, though Gierach gives him a run for his money. Try Rosenbauers book first. You'll be so glad you did.
well written, very informative.......2001-04-05
I think that the other review does a good job reviewing, but I'll take a stab at it...I am an semi-experienced fisher who needed to learn more about reading the water, and I am gaining a wealth of good information. The only drawback, and this is coming from me, is a lack of good illustrative pictures. Reading about a riffle or ledge is good, and I am learning alot, but if the book had more photos I would think it would be perfect. But I would definately recommend this book.
GREAT BOOK!.......2000-05-16
Dave Hughes does an excellent job describing and teaching how to read water. On most rivers, you will often see flyfisherman fishing the wrong type of water or at least fishing certain types of water with the wrong technique. Dave Hughes explains the basics water types (riffles, runs, pools, dead water, etc.) in detail. He also explains the different types of aquatic insects found in each type of water and why will be found in certain types of water over others (e.g. why certain nymphs are found primarily in the riffles and others more in pools. He explains where fish will be in each type of water, what insect types will be in each type of water and what techniques work to catch the fish in each water type. It is an all-around very educational book for both the beginner and advanced flyfisher. The beginner can get a wealth of information from the book. A more experienced flyfisher will get many tips/techniques from this book and can use it as an all-around reference book to be read at least once a year. Don't pass up this book because the title seems simple. Everyone can learn a ton from this book. I highly recommend this book.

Arabic Verbs & Essentials of Grammar.......2007-01-09
This book is a complementary work to Mastering Arabic by the same authors. It is called Arabic - Verbs & Essentials of Grammar. It appears to be a nice complement for beginners to studying Arabic.
This is an Arabic language book. It assumes the student might have the companion book, Mastering Arabic and begins with learning basic grammar and sentence structure. Obviously verbs are essentials to nearly all sentences with their tenses, cases and gender. My objectives are not to speak Arabic so much as to be able to read and write it.
It is really a little too early to tell how far this book and the other will take me since it will be several years before its benefits are fully known to me.
I am a typical Mid-west American with some interest in languages and I have studied Spanish, German, with some Hebrew and Russian exposure. I thought I would tackle Arabic because it is an entirely different language in structure and speech than any other language that I have studied. I also see more and more written Arabic in the news media; and much as I love the news media, I would like to be able to judge what is said for myself (i.e. to keep the news media honest). I am 68 also and this is an adventure.
Transliterations Not Good for Pronounciation.......2006-06-16
The review by "Cat Marie" is very similar to my initial review of "First 100 Words" by the same author. I wrote that review before receiving classroom instruction in Arabic from native speakers. As a result of that experience, I amended my review as follows:
There are basic sounds and sound patterns that simply cannot be represented by English phoneticisms, period. So for the purpose of learning the *sounds* represented by Arabic *script*, English phoneticisms are misleading in some cases, and flat out wrong in others.
For those already familiar with Arabic sounds, phoneticisms or transliterations are merely "codes" rather than representations. Unfortunately, this book gives the (often false) impression of *representing* the sounds. Readers who get a false sense of confidence in mispronunciations learned from this book (as I did) may be discouraged when they first encounter the difficulties of correct pronunciation.
For the English speaker, many Arabic sounds and ways of verbally connecting sounds are totally unfamiliar. To learn to properly pronounce Arabic on even the most basic level, inter-personal instruction is an absolute must. Recordings are good supplements for "ear training," but they cannot provide the correction essential for properly *verbalizing* Arabic sounds.
Good start, but you've got a little further to go.......2006-02-13
As a beginner to the Arabic language, I was grateful to find this book. In the past, I've been subjected to dry-as-toast Arabic grammars that made NO sense whatsoever (because they often used jargon that would only be familiar to Arabic scholars with PhDs, probably). Wightwick and Gaafar's book is a nice, slim reference for basic Arabic grammar. What is particularly nice for the elementary student is that while grammar is shown in Arabic script (in my opinion, this is necessary for any Arabic guide worth its salt), the words are also transliterated so that the reader can accurately learn the pronunciation of a word.
HOWEVER, it should be pointed out that the subtitle is a little misleading. This is NOT a practical guide for the "mastery" of Arabic. While a great desk reference, it is still a good introductury Arabic grammar. There are other books for advanced grammar. This isn't it.
Also, this book is not for the absolute beginner. You should have a foundation in the Arabic alphabet and some basic vocabulary. This book teaches none of those things, just how a sentence fits together and various verb tenses.
Looking back on this review, I have to amend a few things. I began studying Arabic with a tutor and would add that while the pronunciation used in the book is close, sometimes it's inaccurate. Really, you need to use this book in conjunction with an Arabic course, because you won't be able to teach yourself. You NEED to hear the language firsthand, and flat words on paper aren't going to give you that.
Honestly, I recommend this more: A Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic (Reference Grammars). This is a fuller, more complete picture of the Arabic language (so why waste your time on a very skinny intro grammar that occasionally makes transliteration mistakes?). Wightwick's book is a decent reference but really, for your time and money, you can do better.
I'd change the stars on my original review but unfortunately the edit option doesn't seem to allow me.
A Well-Rounded Reference Grammar.......2005-12-28
This book is very well-structured, divided into three parts: introduction, verbs, and grammar. The introduction is a glance at the root system of the Arabic language. The verb section is an excellent overview, beneficial to both the beginner and the advanced. For the beginner it acts as a primer; for the advanced, a review. It discusses topics such as tense, mood, verb forms, and irregular verbs. The grammar section is considerably more concise, and seems like an afterthought. It caters to the beginner, but is redundant to the advanced. The end of every chapter provides a brief summary, as well as a good number of examples. This book is essential for the beginner and a good reference for the advanced.
a good start, but that's it.......2004-06-22
First off, it looks like I might have an older edition of this book, so maybe it has been improved. The edition I have is concise, with some errors, and is okay as a reference for beginning students. It's quick and simple to use. But it's nowhere near in-depth enough for advanced students, and even intermediate learners will find it frustrating a fair amount of the time. Use it in conjunction with a variety of other resources.
