Book Description
The Board Member's Playbook--written for board members who are either familiar with or new to John Carver's revolutionary Policy Governance model--offers real-world scenarios that address the challenges that confront boards of all types of organizations. Step by step, the authors walk readers through a proven problem-solving sequence that allows them to find solutions consistent with the values and policies of their organizations. Designed to be flexible, the book's problem-solving methods are applicable to any challenge boards may face.
Customer Reviews:
A must for every PG board.......2005-05-26
This book consists of 50 very real-world situations that any board using Carver Policy Governance ® might encounter, with a single worksheet to be used by the board members to logically think through what should be done in this instance. The book calls them "rehearsal scenarios."
I used a few of these scenarios with my board, and they thought it was great! It took the policies from dry words on paper to useable skills. They immediately decided to add time to every meeting's agenda to do one of these rehearsal scenarios.
As the facilitator of our board, I love it because each scenario comes with proposed solutions that I can use to help guide the discussion. It really cuts down on my prep time. It's a great tool for continuing to build board capability of governance.
Practice Makes Perfect.......2005-02-08
This is an incredibly useful addition to Carver's Policy Governance Model because it provides practical structure to "rehearsing" common Board-Staff-Owner scenarios with concrete examples. There are hundreds of books on non-profit governance but the vast majority just seem to dabble in detail and pop-psychology (unworkable concepts of "shared governance", etc); but the Carver model provides a unique, practical, and internally consistent method of governance. I'd certainly recommend highly all of his books. This one, written by Miriam Carver and Bill Charney, provides practical exercises demonstrating how the Carver model would handle problems Boards face regularly such as: Do Board members have authority over employees?; Should Board members with expertise oversee programs?; Does the Board job include fundraising?; We like and trust our CEO - isn't that governance?; What if the CEO lies?
It's amazing to me that "rehearsal" plays a role in virtually every profession (musicians, lawyers - in mock trials during law school, teachers - with student teaching, MD's - with simulated emergencies, etc), yet Board members don't rehearse. No wonder performance isn't always optimal. This book is invaluable. It not only suggests that Board's spend time, preferrably at each meeting, rehearsing governance issues but it also provides a practical approach loaded with wonderful examples. Worksheets are included as are the author's suggested "generic" solutions.
Every Board using the Carver Policy Governance Model should have this volume. I can't recommend it highly enough!
An Indispensible Resource.......2004-03-23
"The Board Member's Playbook..." is an indispensible resource for board members and those interested in policy govenance. The writing is very intelligent, clear, concise; a pleasure to read. A separate section provides a thorough overview of the Carver model for those unfamiliar with policy governance, as well as those needing a refresher. An accompanying CD-ROM is another excellent resource for helping board members with implementation.
This book is a roadmap to success for anyone who uses it. The real world examples and worksheets offer a practical, hands-on exercise in policy govenance. After reading and completing the exercises on my own, I felt well-prepared and energized to take on a board-related challenge using the model.
While this book brings everything a board member needs to effectively use the Carver model, it is the board members themselves who are ultimately responsible for their success. Board members must commit to being honest with themselves and one another, and be dedicated to the rigors of the process to properly implement the Carver model.
This wonderful resource also raises a very important question in my mind - why is the Carver model used predominantly in the non-profit sector? Why isn't the Carver model de rigeur for the for-profit sector? I can only see great benefits and progress ahead should this actually occur.
A Welcomed Addition.......2004-03-11
A welcomed addition to the "Policy Governance" corpus, "A Board Member's Playbook" provides a clear, concise and easily useable framework for Board practice. Complete with worksheets and an CD Rom, the book helps policy governance Boards work through simulated issues, forming a bridge between the theory of policy governance and its practical application.

A Highly Recommended Read.......2002-01-09
I can't recall ever reading a memoir similar to David Hamilton's Deep River. I don't know if that's because I've just haven't read the whole range of this kind of literature or because his book is unique. What I do know is that I enjoyed it, that I found myself reading it again, that it is beautifully written and that it is still kicking around inside of me.
The book is not organized around any immediately recognizable principles. Yes, all right, there are sections where Hamilton leads us to believe that he is now going to concentrate on the issue of slavery in western Missouri, or on the movement of pioneers through western Missouri, or the Civil War as it affected western Missouri, as well as, of course, on his memories of growing up on a farm next to the Missouri River. But the problem is, or perhaps I should say, the delight for the reader is, that all these various themes keep slipping into one another, folding in and folding out, forming a kind of fabric. The reader starts with one thread and then is diverted to another, and then another, until he meets the first thread again, now somehow changed.
Contradictions abound. Hamilton's careful scholarship is hedged with cautions than none of these "facts" may be supported by careful scholarship. He floods us with handed-down stories of the region, but asks us the question: How is he to compose a readable book except by choosing the most readable stories -- whether they are true or not? His detailed, graphic and beautifully written accounts of how he learned to hammer a nail, dig a fence post hole or which objects his uncle carried in the back of his pick-up truck, are set against a sweeping historical and pre-historical panorama that takes us back past the Missouri Indians to possible evidence that this land was inhabited by humans 35,000 years ago.
And on and on. Although I have read nothing else of Hamilton's (he is a professor of English literature at The University of Iowa and the editor of THE IOWA REVIEW), I suggest that this book can most successfully be approached as poetry writ large, and in reading it, above and beyond its engaging parts, we are being offered Hamilton's very personal take on the nature of reality.
A Highly Recommended Read.......2002-01-06
A very interesting book. Thoughtful and fun. Amazing sentence structure - I do not remember reading anything quite like it - it was rather refreshing. I note that the author is a Prof. of English at U of Iowa - I do wish I had had someone like him teaching fourty years ago. Hope we see more of his work.
History That Reads Like a Novel.......2001-11-04
DEEP RIVER is about much more than a Missouri bottom-land farm, although that farm and the author's family who worked it are central. Hamilton delves back in time to the days of Indian tribes and of slavery, and along the way spins some great stories about Frank and Jesse James, Blind Boone (a virtuouso pianist), and other colorful characters. He gives a memorable account of growing up in rural Missouri and of his school days. I found the book absorbing, and relished the author's shrewd insights and morsels of wisdom. It's the nearest thing to Thoreau's WALDEN I've seen in a long time, and it too deserves to last. Not incidentally, Hamilton, for many years the editor of THE IOWA REVIEW, writes like a dream.

Book Description
Sir Patrick Moore, CBE, FRS has long been the scourge of those people selling low-cost astronomical telescopes via mail-order catalogues and non-specialist stores. Ten years ago the quality was appalling and disappointment would have been almost guaranteed - but times have changed, and having surveyed some the best and worst of today's inexpensive mail-order catalogue and main-street astronomical telescopes Patrick has admitted to being astonished by how good some of them are. Today, the best are now excellent value and useful instruments. Part One of Astronomy With a Mail-order Telescope provides reports on some available models along with detailed and essential hints and tips about what to look for when buying. Part Two describes how best to use the telescope, which celestial objects to observe (with full-page star charts to help find them), what you can expect to see, and how to take and even computer-enhance astronomical photographs.

Good Basics for the Beginner Trainer.......2003-04-05
I've had this book for several years and refer back to it frequently. Although in several places the author pre-dates current "horse-whisperer" practices and recommends that the rider "be rough" in punishing the horse for disobedience, he never advocates any abuse of any kind and riders should understand the distinction and formulate their training accordingly. He outlines the basics like position of the rider, the movement of the horse in various gaits (lots of photos for comparison), and details the schooling of the horse by breaking it down into elementary, intermediate and briefly discusses advanced levels of schooling. If you have your own horse and can't afford a lot of lessons or don't live close to a good trainer, this book is written well enough to explain things in a logical format and clear manner that should help you get the basics. It explains exactly "how and why" with confidence and doesn't give vague explanations.

typical Mexican accent that is accurate.......2006-11-04
I purchased the booklets and the cassette tape at my campus bookstore. When I started playing the cassette, I was so glad that it was a sharp, accurate Mexican accent - not one of those boring too formal, monotone "neutral accent" that they teach you in High School classes. I've been trying to figure out who this lady was, I even tried calling the company but no success :( Does anyone know?
The books that accompany the tape are excellent........1999-02-23
I just received this in the mail and I love it. The books that accompany the tape are exactly what nurses and doctors can keep in their lab coats. Our charge nurse is going to order one for our desk.
Customer Reviews:
love it!.......2007-07-13
as a travel nurse i've found this as a great resource for the basics of communicating to spanish speaking people in the ER. Fits great in my pocket!
Great for quick reference!.......2006-11-10
The booklet was smaller than I expected but it covered all of the translations I was looking for.
Useful? You bet........2006-09-20
I've had this little booklet for a few years now and it is used almost every day in the Emergency Department where I work. Having had several years of Spanish in high school and college, I have to admit that this is by no means a complete resource. It is, however, highly portable (tucks into a pocket nicely), well organized, easy to use, and covers the vocabulary well enough to perform a basic assessment. My colleagues continually borrow it and all have found it useful. It's cheap and it works.
Speedy Spanish for Nursing Personnel.......2005-11-20
As hospitals become more culturally diverse it becomes more difficult for nursing personnel to communicate instructions and information to non-English speaking patients and their families. Speedy Spanish for Nursing Personnel is an exceptional find.
I initially purchased them for members of my staff on one unit in an 800 bed hospital. At first the administrators were concerned with what we would do if the patients answered our non-Spanish speaking caregivers in Spanish. But that problem has never come up, since we've had the book. Almost everything in it is a statement or a question to be answered yes or no.
The words and phrases are so simple and are spelled out phonetically for easy pronunciation. They relate directly to what we need to communicate: "Turn over, cough, I need to take you blood pressure. I need a urine specimen. Please remove your clothes and put on this gown. We are taking you to xray. I'm going to change your dressing."
We carry the books in our uniform pockets for quick reference, and can even open it and read from it directly to the patient if we need to. The tabs provide quick access to the right phrases. And it stays neat and tidy, with its laminate finish and plastic pocket pouch. The feedback from this little pocket sized book has been phenomenal. Some say it is the most useful gift I've ever given them. It didn't take long for the hospital to make Speedy Spanish available to our entire hospital staff.
Very Helpful!.......2005-10-08
This little booklet is a handy pocket sized reference which will give you the words you need to communicate with Spanish speaking patients. I was very impressed with all the information it contains.
Customer Reviews:
Both the Medical and Nursing books are worth the price.......2006-12-03
I recently re-entered the medical field after several years in another career. I like Spanish a lot and in just a week of working have already come across several Spanish-speaking only patients. I keep both guides with me in my hip pack and it's really helped get me back into the swing of things. It won't teach you perfectly but it will help you to get your point across.
Helpful .......2006-11-01
I have found this booklet helpful in my practice. The phrases are well arranged by category. Big bonus - the words/phrases are spelled (with bold accents) e-x-a-c-t-ly how they are pronounced! Would have given all 'stars' if l & d included some recovery/postpartum teaching.
Great little reference.......2005-10-08
This book may be small, but it is FULL of information. Plus, it is the perfect size to carry in your pocket when you need to have it on hand. I recommend this book highly for anyone in the medical profession who needs some Spanish, but doesn't have time for classes.
Total waste of money!.......2005-08-13
This is a cheaply constructed pamphlet - it is NOT a paperback. I paid $4.95 for this, instead I should have written some common phrases and questions on an index card. I intend to return this to Amazon, even paying postage, to make this point.
a must for medical professionals.......2005-08-12
Clear and concise for travel or office use. Easy to use and the perfect size.

Make no mistake about it, if you want to learn the Spanish quickly this is one of the best books to start with. Forget the verbs, adjectives, nouns and pronouns. Start conversational Spanish now. I teach "Command Spanish" and this is a great compliment for Police Education.
Absolutely Necessary!.......1999-11-04
This little flip book goes with me everywhere. I frequently come n contact with hispanic individuals and this book allows me to interact competently and doesn't allow the subject they "No Comprende" response. It does take some work pronouncing correctly but the english phrase and the spanish coutnerpart are listed as witha pronunciation line which speaking the phrase easy even for the language inept ones out there. And for the price, Why not?
