Customer Reviews:
One of only a few books that talks about the "business of" coaching; Could have been better, but it wasn't bad........2007-03-18
I liked this book. I'm glad I purchased it. There really are not that many books available at present on "the business" of coaching. The other one I have, that I'm about to review, is Four Steps to Building a Profitable Coaching Practice (ISBN: 0595296602) which was written in 2003.
I'd say the instant book does a good job of describing the coaching field outside of the sports realm. It talks about whether many of its participants make a reasonable living (they don't), and it talks about the various fields or backgrounds coaches come from (therapy practitioners and consultants). It tries to be helpful in explaining how to be a successful coach from both a coaching perspective and from a business perspective. There are 17 chapters included:
1. Coaching: Trend or Fad?
2. The Differences Among Coaching, Therapy, and Consulting
3. Becoming a Great Coach
4. Four Questions to Your Perfect Fit
5. From Specialty to Niche
6. Attracting Ideal Clients
7. The Coach as Entrepreneur
8. Business and Your Emotional Intelligence
9. Why Good Coaches Go Broke
10. Staying Safe and Legal
11. Executive and Leadership Coaching
12. Business Coaching
13. Skills Coaching
14. Career Coaching
15. Life Coaching
16. Wellness Coaching
17. Creativity, Relationship, and Spiritual Coaching
My favorite chapters were 2, 5, 12, and 13. I am in the process of putting together a business plan for an online coaching business that will compete directly with many law firms, accounting firms, and fiduciary departments in banks. As a result, Chapter 2 was of particular interest to me because it compared coaching to counseling (legal counseling). Coaching that crosses the line into legal counseling can be construed as the unauthorized practice of law which is regulated on a state by state basis. I can't say that I thought the book did a particularly good job of explaining the difference, but it was better than most articles on the subject I have read.
The book explains that only about 10% of professional coaches gross six figures in a given year. That is not a very good statistic. But I suspect the success rate is so low because most coaches are not very knowledgeable about starting and running a business so it is profitable. The authors in this book attempt to explain how the 90% could make more money by including chapters 5, 6, 7, and 9. And I thought these four chapters had some good content. But I think the reader would have benefited more if the book had instead covered in detail the importance of having a sound written business plan, and how to go about writing a sound business plan. The book did not do this. At least I didn't see it.
If you are looking for a book to tell you how to be successful as a professional coach, then I don't think this book is for you. However, if you are looking for a book that will cover many of the issues you need to consider if you want to have your own coaching business, then you'll get a lot from this book. 4 stars!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Followup.......2004-02-19
The followup to "Clarissa and The Countryman" and the companion book to the second installment of the BBC television series is as enjoyable as the first. Once again Ms. Wright and Sir Scott provide a very personal glimpse into the tradtional English country way of life. The book carries with it the dry humor and robust love of life that Ms. Wright is known for, along with Sir Scott's prodigious and intimate understanding of the natural cycles of life that only a true countryman can posess.
Unfortunately, as a result of this book and series Ms. Wright and Sir Scott have come under fire (including death threats in Ms. Wright's case) for their stewardship and love of the planet and its ecology by shortsighted, over-zealous, and un-informed so-called "Animal Rights Activists". Some of this is dealt with in the book, and stands in stark contrast to the otherwise light nature of this read.
My hat is off again to these brave authors, and as I said in my review of the previous book --- Hey, BBC!! Throw us Yanks a bone and air this series on BBC America!

From the supplier: The Clean Water Act was created to solve the growing problem of the pollution of the country's rivers, lakes and other water systems. However, although the act helped control water pollution, it was not adequate to eliminate the sources of the contaminants. Thus, a proposal to amend the act was passed in Congress. The amendments will focus on the prevention of pollution rather than acting on the effects of pollution. The strategy entails the phaseout of certain chemicals and through improved industrial processes.

From the supplier: Assessment programs help in the evaluation of pollution control programs and regulations such as the Clean Water Act, and in the identification of their problems. The Clean Water Act focuses more on maintaining water status than on achieving water quality. The re-authorization of the Clean Water Act can tackle problems such as the destruction of ecosystem and wildlife habitat, agricultural runoff, and can improve the monitoring of the US's surface and groundwater.

Book Description
Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings is for people who like to work with their hands and who appreciate traditional nautical craftsmanship. You don't have to be the master of any craft to undertake any of these projects--from a simple kamal or latitude hook to the more complex pelorus or octant--just a careful and enthusiastic worker.
These 18 projects fall roughly into three categories: decorative, useful, and somewhere in between. Some, such as the astrolabe, are mainly for display. On the other hand, the sounding line is an important and practical tool for small-craft navigation, particularly in the absence of an electronic sounder. The cross-staff falls somewhere in between, equally at home in the den or the ditch kit.
Each of the devices discussed here--with simple, proven building instructions complemented by clear illustrations--has at one time or another been used for the practical business of navigation, and each is worth reviving for its beauty, historic value, or sheer usefulness.
Dennis Fisher has designed these projects with an emphasis on simplicity and reasonable cost. Everything can be scratch-built using easily obtainable materials and tools, and each is true to the spirit and function of the original instrument.
Customer Reviews:
A Medieval Reenactor's Perspective.......2003-06-02
As a medieval reenactor with a nautical persona, I bought this book to get some information on navigational instruments used in the Middle Ages. This book is a gold mine of information on making and using traditional navigational instruments. Although some of the instruments do not fit into my time of interest (Western Europe 1066-1603), most do, and the instructions on making and using them are good. The historical information is spotty, and some information does not agree with other sources that I consider reliable, but this is not intended as a history book, and the information it DOES provide on construction and use fills in a lot of gaps in other sources. This is a must-have book if you want to know how to make and use medieval navigational instruments.
An interesting book!.......2002-01-04
This is an interesting book for those who want to know a bit more about the history of navigational tools, by showing you how to build a few of them. Don't expect to build a high-precision instrument directly from the contents, but if you are looking for a book that will start you on the right path, then this is it.
Excellent Concept. Poor Execution........2001-09-04
The Good: An excellent overview ancient navigational instruments. In addition to sundials, octants and compasses, Fisher covers such escoteric tools as the traverse board (used to track direction and ship speed), the weatherglass (early barometer), the kamal (arabian navigation tool) and the cross staff (predecessor to the octant).
The Bad: Very crude, hand-drawn illustrations and building plans. No photographs or contemporary illustrations of the actual instruments. Though it is clear that the author has made each of these instrument himself, the book even lacks photos of his own reconstructions. Many illustrations of critical parts are unclear and difficult to understand. The only saving grace is Fisher's excellent descriptions of the parts and the building process.
The Verdict: Though his concept, scope and research are excellent, the failure of the publisher to back Fisher up with quality illustrations, photographs, and professionally-drafted design plans prevents this from being the excellent book it could have been. While it is possible to actually build these tools, the process is more difficult that it should be due to the lack of quality plans.
a set of projects and histories.......2001-07-11
This is not just a craft/wood working set of plans (and a very good set too) it is a history of the tools of navagation. The tools I built from this book work. They are not the best things to use for finding your way (wood instead of metal). But they work reasonably well.
Nice projects, but not enough explaination.......2001-06-28
This has a good selection of projects, but I would have appreciated more detail on how and why the tools work and what is going on. It could use a bit more math and science. This is only useful in conjunction with other books on celestial navigation.
Book Description
"Lady." Let's face it: the word brings to mind a host of associations‚ many of which call to mind costume dramas or tea-sipping debutantes. That is, until The Art and Power of Being a Lady‚ the book that brushes the cobwebs off and makes "lady" relevant to every girl and woman — whether her role model is Audrey Hepburn, Oprah Winfrey, Madeleine Albright, Lauryn Hill, or Mia Hamm. In an era when looking out for one another and taking the high road is too often lost in the shuffle, today's lady has not forgotten what's important. She is kind and considerate without being a doormat. She's assertive, but never a bully. She is sexy without being vulgar. She has great style but is never superficial. She gives back without asking for kudos. And from now on, the perfect word to describe her is "lady."
Customer Reviews:
Just a star worshiping book........2007-09-23
I got up to page 87 and wanted to toss it in the trash. The only thing i got from it was that the women writing it LOVED Candice Bergen. They spent more time on clothes then needed and didn't even tell you what the difference between a black tie and white tie event is. A wast of $13.
Proverbs 31.......2007-05-26
Proverbs 31 in the bible talks about the virtuous woman. THE ART AND POWER OF BEING A LADY takes this one step further. It shows very powerfully what it means to be a virtuous woman in this millenium. I find the book a must-have.
Basic.......2007-04-29
It's a shame this book isn't better. Such a good title. I think this one would suit it better. "Modern Working Woman's Guide to Being Civilized".
This book is a very basic selection of dos and don'ts for the modern woman. Works from the results of a survey and has bits and peices about women the authors admire.
If you have never read much on manners and feminine qualtities this book might be a good place to start. It's easy to read and a good survey of the qualities and lacks of modern women. Some basic etiquette and suggestions on kindness and consideration.
But if you've ever cracked open a copy of Emily Post or something similar you might not want to bother with this book.
woman from within.......2007-03-07
i love the way it is written. very practical with advice on being a woman from within.
Finally a good book.......2007-02-17
This book explain in detail what was required to be a lady! I loved it - another suggested good read!

Life is Hard, God is Good.......2007-07-02
I can only imagine how hard it must be to work in the news. News reporters have talk to people when they are at the lowest points in their life, but Jody Dean points out that if a person is willing to look, there is evidence of the hand of God at work in every story. We might like to see big grand evidences of the goodness of God, but God understands things differently than what we do. I highly recommend reading this book if you are wondering where God is when something bad has happened.
Stories of God at work.......2004-11-03
Emmy Award-winning journalist Jody Dean has worked in broadcast news long enough to dispute the notion that "the devil is in the details" of the events of our day. God is in the details, he counters, including those details that often lie hidden in plain view on the nightly newscasts. "We're used to looking for the huge," he writes about newscasters and viewers alike. "But tiny things can have more weight than we can imagine. I think a lot of the stories we cover are like that...We miss the 'still small voice' when we focus on the thunderstorm."
Yes, he admits, most of what you see on television news is negative or sensational or depressing. That's what makes it the news --- the anomalies, the disasters, the tragedies. But Dean believes observant viewers --- those who have eyes to see and ears to hear --- can discover God in the same stories that others have labeled negative.
Few would disagree, for instance, that the abduction and murder of a child makes for a horrific story, the kind that causes your heart to hurt like nothing else can and tempts you to swear off television news forever. Even seasoned reporters found themselves at a loss for words in 1999 when young Amber Hagerman's body was found near Arlington, Texas. "We've just got to give this one to God," a fellow journalist said to Dean at the funeral. As senseless and heartbreaking as the girl's murder was, her death proved not to be in vain. The tragedy resulted in the institution of the now-nationwide Amber Alert System, which immediately notifies law enforcement agencies, broadcasts outlets, and motorists (via electronic highway signs) whenever a child is reported missing or abducted. God was indeed a part of the story, and the lives of countless children have been saved as a result.
Throughout the book, Dean shows God at work in the details of many of the major stories he has covered in his 30 years as a Dallas-area broadcast journalist --- stories of such magnitude as the Oklahoma City bombing and the breakup of the space shuttle Columbia in the skies over Texas, and of such poignancy as human-interest pieces on an inner city soup kitchen and a man whose ministry to others is played out in the role of Santa Claus.
Among the most compelling is his account of the 1999 shootings during a midweek service at Wedgewood Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas. During his murderous spree, Larry Gene Ashbrook killed seven people and injured seven others before turning the gun on himself. In an interview with the pastor following the tragedy, Dean asked about the seven who died. Pastor Al Meredith immediately corrected him. "There were eight who died," he said, including Ashbrook in the tally and thereby speaking volumes about grace, compassion and forgiveness.
In each chapter, Dean's writing reveals his skill as a storyteller --- an often overlooked talent shared by the best journalists in the country, whether in print or on the air. One of his best tales is the must-read account of a woman named Rose whose story never appeared in or on the air in her lifetime, at least not in so much detail that it would have brought unwanted publicity to her "hole-in-the-wall" burger joint. It's stories like this one that prove Dean can handle human-interest pieces as masterfully as he handles hard news.
If you're a news junkie like I am, you're bound to love this book, if for no other reason than it gives us an arsenal of ammunition to defend an addiction that others cannot comprehend. Fortunately for Dean and Revell, FINDING GOD IN THE EVENING NEWS should appeal as well to the general Christian public --- a public that has become increasingly disenchanted with the media and disturbed by their negative excesses. By showing God at work in the stories he has covered, Dean offers viewers a reason to tune in and discover God for themselves.
FortWorthgolfer.......2004-10-02
This is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. Jody Dean is a member of my Church and Sunday School class. I have not personally met the man; but I can tell you by watching him from a distance that he is one of the most humble and caring men you would ever meet. I heard him state at a Sunday school luncheon that he was not sure if one person would buy his book. Well I bought it on 10/1/04, and could not put it down. A fantastic easy read, with fascinating stories. Great job Jody. When is your next book coming out?

Customer Reviews:
detailed, useful guide to Providence.......1999-12-23
There's nothing like a guide that gives you interesting info that other guides don't: helpful restaurant reviews and guides to ethnic (and non-ethnic) neighborhoods, parking info, funny comments about our favorite city and its mayor, and general how-to-survive-in-Providence tidbits. Especially good for prospective Brown students. The bible for Brown students regarding restaurants, transportation, and everything else. If you are going to Providence for anything (to live, to visit) buy this book. It;s fun just to read, too... a great way to procrastinate.
Excellent guide to small, up-and-coming city.......1999-11-30
This guidebook provides great restaurant reviews and hordes of information about the city. It may lack information about surrounding New England but for the short or long trip to Providence, this book will serve all of your needs. For the person interested in Brown University, this is ideal, providing info about student activities. With Providence coming out of its shell and this the only guidebook I could find, I highly recommend it.
