"Economic globalization," writes Jerry Mander, "involves arguably the most fundamental redesign of the planet's political and economic arrangements since at least the Industrial Revolution. Yet the profound implications of these fundamental changes have barely been exposed to serious public scrutiny or debate. Despite the scale of the global reordering, neither our elected officials nor our educational institutions nor the mass media have made a credible effort to describe what is being formulated or to explain its root philosophies." From which omission arises The Case Against the Global Economy.
The 43 essays in this collection comprise a point-by-point analysis of globalization and its consequences that demonstrates that the future may not be as bright as business leaders tell us. Among the highlights: William Greider examines how General Electric works to shape (with the goal of controlling) the political arena; Ralph Nader and Lori Wallach attack NAFTA and GATT for undermining the sovereign authority of democratic governments; and Wendell Berry looks at the concerted efforts of big business to destroy local, particularly rural, communities in order to plunder the environment without opposition. Several authors, including Satish Kumar, Jeanette Armstrong, and Kirkpatrick Sale, outline alternatives to the global economy based on "bioregional" principles of local self-sufficiency.
Book Description
A great political debate has emerged over the many unexpected and profound consequences of the rush toward the global economy. The world's political and corporate leaders are restructuring the planet's economy and political arrangements in ways that will affect humans and the environment more than anything since the Industrial Revolution. Global institutions such as GATT, the World Trade Organization, NAFTA, and the World Bank, created with scant public debate or scrutiny, have moved real power away from citizens and nation states to global bureaucracies, with grave results.
The Case Against the Global Economy is the first comprehensive point-by-point analysis of the global economy, its premises, and its social and environmental implications. The work gathers forty-three leading economic, agricultural, and environmental experts who charge that free trade and economic globalization are producing exactly the opposite results from what has been promised.
Contributors include William Greider, Jeremy Rifkin, Ralph Nader, Vandana Shiva, David Korten, Wendell Berry, Kirkpatrick Sale, Herman E. Daly, Richard Barnet, Helena Norberg-Hodge, and more than thirty other analysts of the global economy.

The Hard Truth - READ THIS BOOK.......2007-01-05
If you want the truth about what "develpment" and "technological progress" are doing to the environment and the rich, diverse, and independent cultures of the world, read this collection of articles by leading expoerts on the subject.
Then boycott all corporate products and services. There is no alternative. For if we continue working for the corporations, and buying from them, we can do no more to help them.
GLOBALIZATION DESTROYS ALL CULTURES
Read the book and also the WTO agreements.......2006-01-02
I bought the book after reading Friedman's "The World is Flat". I am still struggling to find consistent answers related to global economy.
Now, the book is a must read therefore I give it 4 stars so people will buy it.
However, it shold be mandatory for everyone to compare those statements with the actual WTO agreements and the GATT (freely available at http://www.wto.org).
I treasured the book's articles good points, although I sensed some extreme takes. I do not like the ruthless, deregulated, trade ueber alles oriented world we are currently living in. Yet, statements like there is no mention of environmental issues are quite unfair. The very first lines of the WTO agreement include: "...seeking both to protect and preserve the environment and to enhance the means for doing so in a manner consistent with their respective needs and concerns at different levels of economic development...". That means to me that the intentions are in place; if somebody (corporations-controlled-governments) is actually amending those basic rules, then those entities are to be blamed.
And you will find many points of such reflections if you actually give the other side a chance.
Said that, I think that something still smells fishy (I jsut noticed that Saudi Arabia wasn't part of the deal until 2 weeks ago, what's up with that).
Be intellectually democratic and do yourself the favor of indulging the pleasure of this text along with some critical analysis.
Rational arguments against the global economy.......2004-06-05
It's a shame a book like this is needed at all. We should have thought about this before we implemented our global economic system. Caught in an ever smaller web, countries are forced to compete for scarce resources, which are not the products of countries, but corporations. National sovereignties are destroyed. The environment is affected, since our economy judges our "goods" for value, rather than taking into account the environmental or emotional worth of something. Things become commodities and are prepackaged and sold back to us. For what? The question is something we should have asked before we allowed things to get this far.
A wake up message.......2004-02-05
This book is unlike most and was unexpected. Interesting that some who are considered left of center could be not socialist. This book will reveal that those who write here really do have the best of intentions for people and for nations.
Freedom and democracy. This book should be recommended to our corporate leaders before we export too many more jobs overseas.
What has the off shoring of manufacturing done for Mexico? Although we get things at a lower cost, the long run costs are greater. Most who produce the goods in Mexico cannot even remotely purchase what they make. They live or lived, depending on the product they made, in small, non-descript hovels, some in squalor. It is a long way from what JFK envisioned that economys could grow slowly yet purposely so people could increase wealth.
This book can be a warning if we take is as such. Wake up world and listen
43 Essays about the "global economy".......2002-10-20
I first read this book in 1997 not too long after it was first published and again just recently, it is more relevant now because things described are coming down in the world. Some essays cover such topics as trade, the third world, explanations of GATT & NAFTA, mass layoffs in labor, the food supply & genetically modified organisms. Other writers question whether or not the idea of "globalization" is even sustainable, one starts to wonder exactly who is behind "globalization" and benefits from it 'cause the majority sure doesn't. There is a whole section of this book devoted to corporations and they way they function. Wal-Mart & General Electric get whole essays all their own, and richly deserved.
Usually books this accurate about the state of the world are just too depressing because the problems seem so entrenched and we're helpless to do anything about them. Not so here, the last section of the book focuses on community & localization and is uplifting.
I wish more people would read this book.

Keeping a conscious connection to the land and your food.......2006-02-08
I've been a member of a CSA for the past several years and read this book because I wanted to become a more active participant in the movement. No, this book is not an operations manual on how to run a farm and distribute shares. I'd classify it more as an inspiration manual with examples and case studies of how other CSA formed (and failed), obtained financing and land, found shareholders and labor, all for the purposes of giving people an alternative to being dependent on big agribusiness and live a more sustainable lifestyle.
In the true spirit of a co-op, this book provides an introductory education to CSA newbies on the history of food co-ops, community-building and food systems. For those looking for more hands-on or operations-oriented guides to CSA farming, I'd encourage you to review the rather exhaustive reference section in this book and contact someone near you. For me, I found this book perfect for gaining a comprehensive understanding of CSAs overall, which is helping me increase me evolve from passive shareholder into a more active, participatory role.
Heavy on philosophy, light on practicality.......2001-08-10
If you're new to market gardening and looking for solid info on how to run a CSA, this is *not* the book for you. For example, the chapter on harvesting and processing is only 2 1/2 pages long and boils down to "it can't be explained in a book, you need hands on experience". The majority of the book is self-congratulatory prose about how CSAs are saving the world. I support the CSA concept, but found this book a big disappointment. There are a few useful charts for determining share size and how much to grow, they are the only thing that prevents me from giving this book zero stars.
A Solution to a Problem!!! - This book made me optimistic........1999-09-09
This book describes many problems of the current food production & distribution system. More importantly, it provides a solution using Community Supported Agriculture. The book outlines the steps necessary to set up a CSA, discusses options and issues for each step, and includes examples from CSAs all over the country. Many references and a resource list guide readers to other sources of information in a variety of media. I am a CSA consumer, not a farmer or an organizer; I enjoyed the book and am much more optimistic about the power groups of individuals have to change the system

Book Description
The term proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), in the context of the late stages of stellar evolution, was created just over 20 years ago, to express the belief that in the near future these objects will become planetary nebulae (PNe). The first proto-planetary nebulae (also called post-Asymptotic Giant Branch or post-AGB objects) were discovered in the mid-1970s in the course of the Air Force Sky Survey. Investigation of this phase of stellar evolution developed very rapidly in the 1980s after the IRAS mission when it became clear that proto-planetary nebulae emit a significant part of their energy in the mid- and far-infrared. A new impetus in this field began in the 1990s with high spatial resolution imaging in mid-infrared and optical wavelengths. Evidence has been found that proto-planetary nebulae (at least their central parts) are quite asymmetric while shells of AGB stars display spherical shapes. The most intriguing challenge now is to understand which physical processes are dominant during formation and evolution of proto-planetary nebulae. Is it magnetic field, evolution in binary systems, planets, axisymmetric superwind mass loss and its further shaping by fast wind, collimated jets interacting with a spherically symmetric AGB remnant or maybe an interplay between these different processes? Another challenge is to explain why the mass loss process near the end of the AGB evolution is modulated on timescales of a few hundred years. The model presented during this workshop seems to be very promising in this respect.

Book Description
Karate-do Nyumon literally means a passage through the gates of the Karate way-in other words, an introduction to the world of Karate. Karate-do Nyumon is the result of Master Funakoshi's wish to clarify Karate thought and practice for those who know nothing about it. It comprises unpublished
writings from the years before his death in 1957, together with simplified kata-sequences of movements-synthesized by Funakoshi from the traditional Okinawa Karate-do kata, for beginners.
Master Funakoshi begins by exploding some of the myths of Karate:
"Karate-do is a noble martial art, and the reader can rest assured that those who take pride in breaking boards or smashing tiles, or who boast of being able to perform outlandish feats like stripping flesh or plucking out ribs, really know nothing about karate. They are playing around in the leaves
and branches of a great tree, without the slightest concept of the trunk."
In his description of what Karate is, the Master describes the history of Karate-its origins in the ancient methods of unarmed combat in China, and its growth as a fighting method in Okinawa, a country where arms were banned in a succession of decrees from the Japanese mainland. In order to prevent
it being subjected to control, or more importantly, to prevent the Japanese overlords from knowing and using the techniques, the practice of Karate was kept a secret. To preserve this secrecy, the habit persisted until very recent times of keeping no records. Master Funakoshi, however, recognized in
this book and others the need to formulate the kata precisely, so as to establish a standard of true Okinawan Karate.
The kata in this book are not traditional kata, but they serve to establish the correct habits of stance, thought and action, and to facilitate the eventual mastery of the true Karate-do kata. All these special kata are clearly explained and illustrated by photos.
Lastly, Master Funakoshi recalls stories of men who were living legends when he was a youth in Okinawa, men whose reputations overcame even the secrecy that clung to Karate until the middle of this century.

The Master does it again!.......2002-02-18
There are certain books in which EVERY true martial artists should have in their library. A few of those books are "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do", "Karate-Do KyoHan", "Zen in the Martial Arts", "The Book of Five Rings", "The Art of War", and last but not least, "Karate-Do NyuMon". Gichin Funakoshi has a view of Karate-Do that most practitioners do not see. He wants it more of a way of life...a whole excesize of mind, body, and spirit. In this book, he expands on this belief and even includes the almost forgotten (but SO important) Ten-No-Kata. It is short and worth the study. VERY IMPORTANT! This book contains a lot of "Do" as well as technique. Funakoshi is the "man" in my book, along with Lee, Inosanto, Ueshiba, Rhee, and Hatsumi. I HIGHLY recommend this book.
Introductory Text.......2000-06-18
This book begins with history of te and a couple of masters. Of course in Funakoshi style there is no in depth details nor any dates. Ten no Kata is revisited, which is no longer practiced with frequency today. Funakoshi's books were the text book of karate in the early 1940's. Good for their time, but still a good addition to your library.
A fun overview but nothing deep.......2000-05-23
All of us who study karate are lucky that Funakoshi wrote all he did. Except for a very few others, Funakoshi is the only early written information about karate and the earliest material that was translated into English.
Unfortunately for myself and many others who study karate history, Funakoshi never goes into much detail about much of anything. He almost never gives a date and he rarely, if ever says where he learned any of his kata or other practices.
The material on his teachers (Itosu and Azato primarily) is in summary form, never mentioning more than anecdotes. There are no dates, mentions of other students they had, what they taught etc...
Over all, this kind of book is about real karate, certainly enough to get a young mind going in the right direction about karate. It is well written, we can probably thank the translator for that. It contains some interesting material that is fun to read. Beyond that, it lacks detail to keep you interested for long.
Most of Funakoshi's books are like this for history. For the real meat of Funakoshi's karate (rather than this introduction), take a look at "Karate-do Kyohan", which contains much more technical information.
Living History.......1999-12-19
Karate-Do Nyumon is a wonderful book for any karate practitioner to read. I've read my copy through many times, and that's not counting all the times I've come back to specific areas of the book. This is one of the best books available for the new student in helping them understand just what karate-do really is, and it is no less a very informative read for students and teachers of all other levels.
A bit disappointing.......1999-12-14
So, there's some nice stories about Funakoshi and his masters, all with some kind of morality in them. Well, not that bad. Than there's the presentation of Ten No Kata. So, that's interesting because this Kata is not practiced anymore formally in the JKA and few karatekas even know it exists, and personnaly I think it's a great method of training basics. So at least the book shows this kata, but the performer has (seems to me) a very weak technique compared to the performer in karate-do kyohan the master's text (see this title). Sometimes the postures and techniques seem to be shocking for modern shotokan standards. Maybe it has to do with the evolution of shotokan since the book was written, but then again the performer in kyohan looks much more the way we are used to for modern shotokan karate-Do. All in all, I was a bit disappointed with this book. I give it 2 stars for the Ten No Kata and maybe a little nit for the stories.

From Italo Calvino's meditation on the difficulties of selecting a title in a bookstore, to Virginia Woolf's essay on the joys of the "common reader," from Cervantes's depiction of the burning of Don Quixote's books to Anne Fadiman's musings on the courtly (and carnal) ways to mark one's passage through the terrain of a text, Where Books Falls Open testifes, in words and image, to the strength and endurance of the written word. With selections from the pens of Donald Hall, Joyce Carol Oates, Calvin Trillin, Robert Pinsky, Jane Austen, Robertson Davies, Dorothy Parker, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Mary Gordon, to name just a few, and adorned with Bascove's gorgeous and inimitable paintings, this elegant book has something for anyone interested in the nature of writing and the pleasures of reading.
Customer Reviews:
Any booklover will love this.......2007-08-07
It would be difficult for a book lover not to thoroughly enjoy this collection of writings about books. A great resource for thinking about books, reading and writing, for ideas about how to go about reading and writing, and for just finely crafted writing by lovers of books.
Bascove's art which adorns this collection creates a marvelously private, cozy, bookish world where voices seldom sound aloud, and the world outside is muted, allowing the reader or writer to be in the world on the printed page.
This book was made for literature lovers.......2007-01-02
This is a gorgeous book! It is filled with essays and poems and thoughts on reading, writing, and the love of books. The writings are from various authors some classic and well known and some I haven't heard of before. Some writings I liked a lot better than others. (-Regardless of the ones that didn't 'speak' to me, I still consider this a great collection of writings on the subjects I love.) The paintings are rich in color and detail and anyone who loves books/reading/writing will enjoy these highly eye appealing pictures that depict people with books! I'd love to have some of these to hang in my home!
This is a beautiful gift for yourself or someone you know who loves the literary world.
Buy it and enjoy!

prose, poetry and art about your favorite subject.......2003-03-06
This anthology of prose and poetry starts out strong .... prose selections from Italo Calvino, Lynne Schwartz, Roy Blount and Anne Fadiman are wonderful, affectionate tributes to reading, Also, I think this is the first time Steve Martin and Jane Austen have appeared together, and both are fine. There are also a LOT of poems here, and some are better than others, as with all poetry. This is a mix of contemporary (Fran Lebowitz, Billy Collins) and classic (Cervantes, Elizabeth Barret Browning) selections that explore reading, writing and books. Artwork by Bascove is of a style consistent with the cover -- bold, colorful and primitive, sixteen paintings that also feature books. A percentage of the profits go to First Book, a literacy program for children.
I'd say the quality of the selections is uneven, but you will undoubtedly find something, and probably many things, that will please you. This is a small volume that can be read quickly, or savored, and as an object it is very pleasing. This would make a fine gift for a bibliophile you know.
treat yourself to this book.......2002-02-04
This is a perfect gift--but first give it to yourself. Bascove takes the same care selecting and arranging prose and poetry as she does composing her lush oils, which tell their own stories. I savored the book cover-to-cover, at one point stumbling up the subway steps because I had my nose buried in it. This is a singularly beautiful book in every way.
