Book Description
Writing about multivariate analysis is a surprisingly common task. Researchers use these advanced statistical techniques to examine relationships among multiple variables, such as exercise, diet, and heart disease, or to forecast information such as future interest rates or unemployment. Many different people, from social scientists to government agencies to business professionals, depend on the results of multivariate models to inform their decisions. At the same time, many researchers have trouble communicating the purpose and findings of these models. Too often, explanations become bogged down in statistical jargon and technical details, and audiences are left struggling to make sense of both the numbers and their interpretation.
Here, Jane Miller offers much-needed help to academic researchers as well as to analysts who write for general audiences. The Chicago Guide to Writing about Multivariate Analysis brings together advanced statistical methods with good expository writing. Starting with twelve core principles for writing about numbers, Miller goes on to discuss how to use tables, charts, examples, and analogies to write a clear, compelling argument using multivariate results as evidence.
Writers will repeatedly look to this book for guidance on how to express their ideas in scientific papers, grant proposals, speeches, issue briefs, chartbooks, posters, and other documents. Communicating with multivariate models need never appear so complicated again.

A GREAT resource for social scientists and curious students.......2007-07-04
This is one of the best compact resources for understanding how to think about data, and how to communicate meaning derived from data to a non-scientific audience. While not a data presentation tool exactly (I recommend Walgren et al, "Graphing Statistics and Data") it does suggest the importance of critical thinking about data. A must!
A good tool.......2006-03-16
The book is very useful. The only problem is partial overlapping with The Chicago Guide to Writing about Numbers, by the same author. If you don't own the other one, buy just this one.

Book Description
This book consists of a selected subset of papers presented at the International Symposium of Linked Employer-Employee Data, held in Washington DC, in May 1998 - to address the creation and analysis of such matched data in an environment that safeguards respondent confidentiality. The conference brought together a wide range of social scientists and statisticians from more than 20 countries.
Three broad themes are highlighted:
(1) The analysis of linked employer-employee data.
The basic finding of this and the next section is that the firm matters a good deal in explaining the differences in earnings, productivity, and work experiences of individual workers. Linked data allow the researcher to disentangle the firm effects from the worker effects.
(2) Econometric issues involved with the analysis of such data.
Creating and analyzing employer-employee matched data sets presents a number of new econometric problems that are not present in standard micro-data sets containing just workers or just employers. However, these data also offer us a unique opportunity to examine the effects of some of the econometric problems involved in using the other data sources. The chapters in this section address both of these issues. The first two chapters examine new econometric issues involved in the creation and use of matched data sets, while the second two chapters use matched data to examine possible problems with cross-sectional or panel data on workers. The results from each of these chapters will be valuable to all empirical researchers, regardless of whether they are using employer-employee matched data or more standard cross-sectional or panel data sets.
(3) Ongoing efforts aimed at creating large-scale linked employer-employee data.
The last section of this book describes four recent efforts at creating linked employer-employee data through surveys of firms and individuals. The first two chapters describe an "employers first" methodology of creating linked employer-employee data, and the last two chapters describe an "employees first" methodology. The two "employees first" surveys described here are, as far as known, the only two large-scale surveys in production that follow this design. Each of the four chapters in this section describes details about the design and field operation of the survey that will be indispensable to others who might want to create or analyze linked employer-employee survey data.
The 23 chapters in this book provide a glimpse into the future of labor economics and industrial organization. It can be said that labor economics and public policy around the world has been dominated over the past several decades by quantitative analyses based upon public-use US micro-data. In the future, it is very likely that economics and social policy in the United States and elsewhere will depend on quantitative analysis based on linked employer-employee micro-data currently residing in all continents of the world.
Book Description
This is the 5th edition of a well-established book
Principles of
Plant Nutrition which was first published in 1978. The same format is maintained as in previous editions with the primary aim of the authors to consider major processes in soils and plants that are of relevance to plant nutrition. This new edition gives an up-to-date account of the scientific advances of the subject by making reference to about 2000 publications. An outstanding feature of the book, which distinguishes it from others, is its wide approach encompassing not only basic nutrition and physiology, but also practical aspects of plant nutrition involving fertilizer usage and crop production of direct importance to human nutrition. Recognizing the international readership of the book, the authors, as in previous editions, have attempted to write in a clear concise style of English for the benefit of the many readers for whom English is not their mother tongue. The book will be of use to undergraduates and postgraduates in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry and Ecology as well as those researching in Plant Nutrition.
Book Description
Nearly all the chemical elements that make up living things are mineral elements, the ultimate source of which is rock weathered into soil. In the thoroughly revised Second Edition of Mineral Nutrition of Plants: Principles and Perspectives, Epstein and Bloom explain that plant roots "mine" these nutrient elements from their inorganic substrate and introduce them into the realm of living things. The authors trace the subsequent movement of these nutrients into other plant organs, tissues, cells, and organelles, their biochemical assimilation, and their functions in plant physiology and metabolism. Treatment of these processes extends from molecular biology through global biogeochemistry. The text, illustrated in full color, is accessible both to undergraduate students in plant physiology, agronomy, horticulture, and environmental studies and to researchers in these and other plant biological fields.

Such a nice piece of information about Plant Nutrition.......2005-12-20
I just received a copy of this book from Dr. Epstein. After taking a look at it, I must say that it is a great piece of information for those interesting in Plant Nutrition. You must have a copy of this book for yourself.

Book Description
Plants Alive is designed to get amateurs interested in exploring the plant world around them and to give them the skill to record their observations through guided nature journaling. It then offers, to those who have been captivated by the field, advanced techniques for study. The book can be very useful in guiding science students into real science activities in rural, suburban, and urban environments. The authors questioning format will stimulate curiosity and entice readers to thing about possible answers. For a variety of reasons, educators will embrace this book. First of all, it is a course in botany without any of the stigmas attached to textbooks. Also unlike texts, Plants Alive! enables students to do real science, and not just read about it. Experiments and exercised pass off as hands-on science abound, but opportunities for students to do real science and report their findings to the scientific community are rare.
Book Description
The University of Texas has long had one of the most feared and respected football programs in the country. It's produced such prolific NFL stars as Ricky Williams, Priest Holmes, and Roy Williams. From memorable rivalries with Texas A&M and Oklahoma to wacky conventions like Bevo the cow and the 'Hook 'em Horns', Longhorn football has one of the best followings in college sports. Learn about every amazing facet of Texas pigskin in this new book by Athlon Sports.
Customer Reviews:
MAKE ROOM FOR A NEW CHAPTER!.......2006-01-09
As of this writing, this book will soon have to be revised to add a new chapter into the rich tradition of the University of Texas as the Longhorns have just captured the National Championship in a thrilling win over USC in a game for the ages. This book shines the spotlight on UT's grand football tradition and covers some of their greatest players, games, and coaches in their storied history.
Inside you'll learn of the origins and history of things such as the "hook `em horns" sign, Bevo the steer, the Spring Jamboree and Big Bertha, the world's largest bass drum. The Drum's interesting history goes back to when UT purchased it from the University of Chicago in 1955 when they ended their football program. The drum is 8 feet in diameter and 54 inches across.
The book provides brief profiles and career highlights of players who are not only all-time Longhorn greats, but all-time NCAA greats as well. Included are Running backs Earl Campbell, Chris Gilbert, Cedric Benson, and Ricky Williams; Quaterback Bobby Layne who went onto become a Detroit legend as QB for the Lions, Linebacker Tommy Nobis, and Defensive tackled Brad Shearer. Curiously Roy Williams, perhaps the greatest Wide Receiver in Texas history is excluded. I suspect that quarterback Vince Young will be included if the book is ever revised.
The book spotlights the two greatest Texas coaches: Darrell Royal, who coached from 1957 to 1976, winning three national championships and had the team's longest win streak of 30 games from 1968 to 1970, and Mack Brown who has just one his first national title.
Some of Texas' greatest games are also featured. There's the 1958 game that Texas won 15 - 14, snapping a six game losing streak to the Sooners. Then there is the 1965 Orange Bowl in which Texas knocked off Bear Bryant's #1 ranked Alabama team 21 - 17, and then one I remember quite well as the Longhorns pulled a shocking upset of #3 Nebraska 37 - 27 in the very first Big 12 Conference Championship game. There are also histories and highlights from two of the team's greatest rivalries against Oklahoma and Texas AM.
Great color and black & white photography accompanies and complements the text. The book isn't meant as a comprehensive history of Texas football. Rather it's meant as a summary of highlights and traditions and in that regard it does it's job very well. There could not be a better time for Texas fans to check this book out as they are basking in that championship glow.

Nice for the pictures, but has lots of errors........2006-01-05
"Game Day, Texas Football" is a nice book if you'd like a brief overview of the highlights of Longhorn football, but the text is sparse and full of errors, especially in the areas of UT history and traditions. While James Street wrote a very nice foreward, no authors are listed for the book itself. It gives the appearance of something rushed together in time for football season to make some quick cash for the publisher.

There are writers who would be horrified at the tactics laid out in Guerrilla Marketing for Writers, perhaps because marketing oneself as one might a commodity is at odds with the artistic temperament. Alas, those writers are unlikely to find themselves at the helm of such publishing fleets as the Chicken Soup or, well, Guerrilla Marketing series.
HarperCollins publishes 1,200 books a year, according to the authors of Guerrilla Marketing for Writers. Is there a snowball's chance in hell that their publicity department can adequately promote all of them? Of course not. Don't let someone else's publicity department drop the ball when it comes to your book. Guerrilla Marketing's 100 weapons for selling your work range from creating media kits and promotional calendars to appearing at book-group discussions and fundraisers. Each "weapon" is rated by its monetary cost to the author, and well over half are free. While the authors advise that this book will help in the promotion of "any kind of book, from poetry to textbooks," most of its tactics seem best suited to nonfiction. The authors' overarching philosophy? Think like an entrepreneur. "Don't think like a writer who has something to say; think like an author who has a lifetime of books, products, and services to sell." --Jane Steinberg

fun to read and full of practical advice.......2007-03-18
This book is both fun to read and full of practical advice! Described as a "what to do" as opposed to a "how to do book," it really explains the importance of marketing for authors as well as many ideas for "what to do." So what is "guerilla marketing?" I'd say marketing intelligently and inexpensively, instead of just throwing money at it.
It's no surprise to authors or anyone that has done some research that authors are responsible for making their book sell. It doesn't matter whether you have a big name publisher or are self-published, you need to promote and market your book. One of the biggest parts of my book proposal for Blogging for Business was on marketing/promotion and certainly a good part of why the publisher liked it.
Also, a book is not a be all and end all. It won't make you rich. It probably won't even make you much money from book sales, but the "expert status" gained, sales of additional services (consulting, speaking, etc.), and related information products can make it very worthwhile. Guerrilla Marketing explains this all in a simple to comprehend and digest format.
The "weapons" are really in two categories, at least in my mind. Things to do, such as press releases, webcasts, email signatures, surveys, strategic allegiances, media kits, and things to motivate and think about, such as your enthusiasm, your professionalism, etc. I found both categories useful. Obviously not everyone will find all the weapons appropriate for them, but certainly enough to make spending the time being amused while reading this book worthwhile.
I finished this book a couple of weeks ago, and it's sitting on my nightstand. Every night or two, I reread a section and get more value, and practical ideas.
Nice Guys Finish .... First?.......2007-03-15
Perhaps the sub-title of this book should have been "Nice Guys Finish Last." - This is the book that tells it like it is, that an author's job is only half done when the book is published. The other half comes down to promotion, and you have to BE AGGRESSIVE. BE - BE, AGGRESSIVE. (That's right, you have to be your own cheerleader, too!)
I cannot tell you the number of traditionally published authors who have lamented to me about the lack of marketing muscle their publisher is putting behind their book. At least when you self-publish, you are not surprised by this inevitability. Hint: Unless your name is Stephen King, your publisher isn't going to heavily promote your book. Why? Because their marketing budget is all tied up in Stephen King's book, that's why. If you have a horse race between your book and Stephen King's book, which one do you bet on? The same one the publisher chooses. That harsh reality is why books like Guerrilla Marketing exist. Ready, aim, fire! May the most knowledgeable authors hit their goals.

Be inspired!.......2007-01-31
Levinson et al have produced a book loaded with inspiring ideas for promoting and marketing my books. I can't wait to get to the end so I can sit down and pull together my own Promotional Plan and get going. Some of the ideas pertain specifically to USA but many more can be translated to any country, even little old New Zealand. Thanks guys!
Armed and dangerous.......2006-12-04
This was the first book I purchased to help me promote my book CAPITALIZING ON BEING WOMAN OWNED. It was a very good first exposure to possibilities and to what the Publisher might or might not do. This book provides enough ideas that every author should be able to find some that fit his/her book, personality and situation. It does take some effort to pull out the best information for you because the weapons are not divided by book type.
You've been guerillaed........2006-08-01
The introduction pretty well sums up the fatal flaw in this book: "But [this book] isn't a how-to book, it's a what-to book."
You have to ask: How much good is knowing what to do if you don't know how to do it? Go rebuild the engine in your car. I told you what to do; you will have to find out how to do it somewhere else. Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else to begin with.
I bought this book to learn how to market my novels. I get: "In this respect [promotion] novelists are luckier than nonfiction writers. Not much is expected from them in the way of promotion.(page 87)" How much less? None? A little bit? Which ones of the 100 "weapons" should I use? Though I forced myself through the rest of the book and its interminably boring lists, I never found the answer.
I will have to say the authors practise what they preach. I would bet they have used all the gorilla (my spelling) weapons in this book, and then some, to sell every copy they can; including, I suspect, many of the glowing reviews on this page from members of their "network." You push my book and I will push yours.
It is a shame that American literature has come down to who is the best marketer. Maybe that is why many new novels, which used to keep me glued to my seat, now get slammed shut after the first few chapters. Maybe the next one will be better.
This book is cotton candy: real yummy but no substance: sugar air. The best part is the money-back guarantee, which the authors proudly proclaim, is a safe bet because most people won't take you up on it.
I have to give it some credit for the appendixes. Of course, you could get the same thing with a few simple internet searches, but I hate to be all negative.
If you buy this book, you may find yourself saying: "I've been guerillaed."

In Adam and Eve and Pinch Me, the mills of the gods appear to have ground Jock Lewis to dust--or have they? Jock's obsessive-compulsive girlfriend, Minty, thinks he was killed in a train crash and is tormented by his ghost. But the cheerfully amoral Jock--AKA Jerry Leach and Jeff Leigh, depending on which woman he's romancing--faked his death to move on to yet another unsuspecting lady. His one legal wife has swept their union hastily under the rug and married a conservative member of Parliament, who has his own urgent secrets. Jock's most recent fiancée, a successful banker, hasn't minded keeping him in the manner to which he's become accustomed--that is, until the day he doesn't come home. When his body is found in a cinema, the intersections of his past collapse in a way that destroys some lives and rebuilds others.
Adam and Eve and Pinch Me is no whodunit: the murderer is known from the outset. The suspense arises from the uncertainty of whether justice will be served. That deftly handled angle draws the reader into the book, while Ruth Rendell's famously acute insight into all forms of borderline madness makes it all so believably chilling. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
Minty’s boyfriend, Jock, was killed in the disastrous train wreck at Paddington, shortly after he borrowed all her savings. Now he has come back to haunt her. Zillah lost her estranged husband, Jerry, in that same accident. She is not convinced he is actually dead, but for reasons of her own decides not to pursue the matter. Fiona’s fiancé, Jeff, has simply disappeared–quite inexplicably since she was supporting him in style.
In her ingeniously unnerving new novel, Ruth Rendell deftly traces the connections among these women–and between them a series of vicious stabbings terrifying London.
Adam and Eve and Pinch Me is a masterpiece of malice and psychological suspense.
Customer Reviews:
Another Rendell Gem!.......2006-03-31
Ruth Rendell is one of my favourite authors, and this book proves why. No one can write a psychological thriller like her, and in this book she has written in a character that is obsessive=compulsive and a schizophrenic. Her ability to depict these emotional illnesses in her characters is unparalleled. Her writing skills are unique and spell-binding. In this book we have three women living in different parts of London that don't know each other, but are inescapably bound together by their involvement with a man. The tension builds and builds throughout the book until the explosive ending.
What, no soap?.......2006-02-17
Rendell is great at creating characters who grab and keep your attention, but she can also bushwhack the reader, sort of. Jerry Leach (or Jock Lewis, or Jeff Leigh, or whatever name he's using this month) is a user of women, moving in with a series of girlfriends and taking their life savings and credit cards. He starts out as the central character by virtue of his leech-like activities but -- surprise -- he becomes a victim himself almost exactly halfway through the book. Thereafter, he appears only as a ghost in the mind of Minty Knox, an obsessive-compulsive shirt-ironer for a London dry cleaner. There's also Michelle and Matthew, the former a sadly obese middle-aged woman, the latter her dangerously anorexic but loving husband. And Zillah, Jerry's featherbrained not-quite-ex-wife, who enters an ill-advised marriage of convenience with a gay conservative MP. And Minty's black neighbors, Laf and Sonovia, who don't realize how much they know. And on and on. Like many of this author's books, if properly handled, this would make a terrific film.
Interesting Characters, light on plot.......2005-11-16
Rendell is such a good writer that I never feel totally unsatisfied, but, that said, it's hard to spend so much time with a dim main character. Minty is an addled spinster, yes a type, who falls in love with a con man, who takes her up more or less because he is in her neighborhood one night and is told she has money. The book is enlivened by the other characters, Minty's neighbors and her boyfriend's other conquests, and although it is interesting, and I think psychologically accurate enough to a point (the killing), Minty just isn't a good enough character for a book to be based on her. Now, the Rottweiler, with its serial killer who is offended by his press coverage, that is a character driven book that is rewarding. If you love Rendell, you'll like this one well enough. If not, then pass.
Another delicious Rendell.......2005-05-02
Because Ruth Rendell's last few outings have been vaguely disappointing, I approached this most recent book with a little reluctance if not outright trepidation. In fact, it sat in my bedside book pile far longer than a Rendell would usually have done in the past. But I needn't have feared...she's back in form and this is an absolutely fascinating character study of men and women and need and manipulation. There are several main characters here whose lives intertwine most unusually, and it is hard to decide who is the best-written of these. They all spring to life with their own unique collections of human foibles and motivations and they are all on a collision course, each with the other. You can see the train wreck coming, but you can't avert your eyes.
"Go Away!" she hissed. Wish I'd taken heed... .......2005-01-12
Minty should have taken her knife to this manuscript. At least half should have been cut. "A&E&PE" is a book both wandering and repetitious.
Over the course of this novel, the main character takes almost sixteen million baths. I counted! There's also long lists of meals prepared, detailed fashion descriptions of eighty thousand outfits, and in-depth cinema visit scenes for every film that appeared around the year 2000.
Pinch me?
No.
Pinch off half the chapters and there's be enough room for the amount of plot and character invested here. On second thought, pinch off half the characters too: there's little that's interesting or sympathetic to several of them, and their stories' impact on the main plot is tangential. At best.
In fairness: I was expecting a mystery. Perhaps I'm just disappointed that there was very little crime in this novel, no investigation (at all), and no doubt as to what the conclusion would hold. There's never a moment when "it all comes together," no long-awaited twist that would make the whole read worthwhile. Instead of surprises we have bath after bath after bath and a lot of weeping into hankies over failed relationships.
Two stars out of five.

Book Description
“If you don’t want your heart broken, don’t let on you have one.”
Sara Moone is an expert on broken hearts. She is a foster child who has been bounced from home to home, but now she is almost sixteen and can not live in the system forever. She vows that she will live in a cold, white place where nobody can hurt her again.
But there is one more placement in store for Sara. She is sent to live with the Huddlestons on their sheep farm. There, despite herself, Sara learns that there is no escape from love. It has a way of catching you off guard, even when you try to turn your back.
When it was published in 1994, Adam and Eve and Pinch-Me won every major children’s book award in Canada. Since then it has appeared in countries around the world. Its story of love and longing strikes a universal chord.

Being both foster and adoptive parents, this is real stuff with real personalities and feelings portrayed. Wished I had read it in one sitting to get the full effect of the emotions.
Grrrrreat and I haven't even finished it!!.......2000-11-04
The book is great for me. I only started reading this afternoon and I already love it! It's about this great Sara Moone a very interesting character whom many people will be able to relate to. Once you start this book...you won't be able to put it down. Go get it!
Great Book!.......2000-04-17
This book was a great read! I especially enjoyed it because I'm interested in adopting in the future, and this gave me an insight into the foster care system, albeit in Canada. The writing was great, although it's definitely a young adult book and not an adult book! The plot line would be a bit too easy for adults, but I don't think this would be a problem with younger readers (high school would be fine with it).
All in all, I really enjoyed this! I hope to read more of this author's books!
Book Description
Mr. Coppard's implicit theme is the closeness of the spiritual world to the material; the strange, communicative sympathy which strikes through two temperatures and suddenly makes them one. He deals with those sudden impulses under which secrecy is broken down for a moment, and personality revealed as under a flash of spiritual lightning.
