This book will be the standard for all other books about collaboration to measure themselves. Mr. Chrislip is among the best facilitators of collaborative processes anywhere. The author is also a skilled teacher and is able to convey both his knowledge and lessons of experience in this book. The collaborative Work System Fieldbook is one of the best reference books about teams, leadership, coaching, and a wide variety of collaboration topics that I have found. Working in the consulting industry for over 12 years you see a lot of books about similar topics but they are not well researched or well written - this book is both!

Khalid Sayood's textbook-style Introduction to Data Compression is the definitive guide to all kinds of compression schemes. Early chapters establish the mathematics involved in basic compression techniques, including lossless and lossy compression as well as the fundamentals of information theory that lay the groundwork for common forms of compression. (The book contains all the relevant formulas, although those who don't need such mathematical detail will still be able to understand the book.)
A good portion of the book examines various compression schemes, their strengths and weaknesses, and what content they work best for. Introduction to Data Compression begins with lossless compression schemes, which lose no information during the compression/decompression process. Huffman Coding, a well-established compression scheme, and arithmetic and dictionary coding also receive excellent treatment. In addition, the author takes on lossless compression for images.
For lossy compression, Sayood discusses schemes that use quantization, where a range of values is compressed in some way. He also describes scalar, vector, and differential encoding and fractal compression. A final chapter looks at video encryption (which often combines techniques from earlier chapters). Many of the compression schemes include examples from image and sound files, but the book considers a wide variety of video schemes too. This rich and confidently written text collates a lot of research and can serve as both textbook and source for designers who need a readable and mathematically solid introduction to data compression.

Accessible textbook on compression does not sacrifice rigor .......2007-05-19
This is one of those books that only gets a new edition when the author has something genuinely new to say, and this third edition of Sayood's excellent introduction to data compression is no exception. This particular edition is different from the second mainly in that there is a new chapter on audio compression that includes a description of the mp3 algorithm. Also there is additional information on the new video coding standards as well as the new facsimile standards.
As to the target audience for this book, if you are tasked with designing hardware or software implementations of data compression algorithms and you have some background in either electrical engineering or computer science, then this is a good book from which to learn and then to practice what you learn via some very good exercises. Some prior knowledge of information theory and random processes wouldn't hurt either. There is also an abundance of examples that are sprinkled throughout the book to illustrate concepts as they are presented. The author's approach in each chapter is to explain each concept in as an accessible manor as possible, present relevant equations, and then work an example using what has just been presented.
The book presents the mathematical preliminaries in chapter 2, and chapters 3 and 4 are dedicated to coding algorithms which include Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, Golumb-Rice codes, and Tunstall codes. Chapters 5 and 6 describe many of the popular lossless compression methods and their applications. These methods include LZW, BWT, and DMC. Chapter 7 describes various lossless image compression algorithms such as JBIG as well as their applications. Chapter 8 discusses the mathematical background of lossy compression standards. Chapters 9 and 10 concentrate on quantization since it is the basis of most lossy compression schemes. Chapter 11 discusses differential encoding techniques such as DPCM and delta modulation. Included is a discussion of the CCITT G.726 standard.
Chapter 12 is the third and final chapter dedicated to mathematical foundations. It is meant to prepare the reader for the chapters on transform, subband, and wavelet based methods that encompass the following three chapters. The JPEG standard is covered in chapter 13, the CCITT G.722 standard in chapter 14, and the EZW, SPIHT, and JPEG2000 standards are covered in chapter 15. Chapter 16 focuses on audio compression and includes descriptions of the various MPEG audio compression schemes including mp3. Chapter 17 switches gears somewhat and covers techniques in which the data to be compressed is analyzed and a model is produced. This model is then used to synthesize the data and is quite useful in speech compression. Chapter 18 deals with video compression and diverges from the book's central theme of dealing with techniques rather than applications. The chapter discusses the H.261 standard as well as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 standards.
The website for the book, found at the publisher's site, contains a large number of C programs dealing with compression. I haven't tried to use any of these yet, so I can't speak to their validity.
A great textbook.......2006-02-11
This book has all the ingredients for a great textbook. It provides good theoratical background without going into unnecessary details, gives lot of discussion about applications, provides great exercise problems, and above all it has outstanding examples that makes some of the difficult concepts easy to understand.
Data compression needs a lot of background in information theory and other areas specific to speech, image processing etc. It is impossible to give a rigourous theoratical treatment of all of those in one volume. A strong point of this book is that it gives you just enough background on a variety of topics - without making the whole book obscure. In that respect, it is very application and implementation oriented. It is in fact what it says it is: A very good "INTRODUCTION to Data Compression"

The best thing about this book is the coverage and organization of the material. Sayood covers a wide variety of compression topics without getting into the nitty gritty details of them all. Thats why its an "Introductory" book. This book is a valuable resource for those who want to know the basics of various compression techniques and can be used as a starting point for further details. Some topics like arithmetic coding are covered in more detail than others. The book is also organized nicely with mathematical foundations provided as and when necessary.
"The" Definitive Guide.......2004-02-16
Amazon claims that this is "the definitive guide". I have to agree with them because this book is the only broad grey pages introduction to data compression that I have been able to find, and it is very well written.
If you are only casually interested in data compression this book is not for you.
If you are interested in adding compression to your application and your data falls into a common category, sound, video, text ect this book is probably not for you. You should look to the open source community or buy an off the shelf product.
But if your data is odd or unique like say telemtry data (I'm sure there are other examples I just can't think of any) and you need to design a compression scheme for your data this book is "the only" book for you.
If you want to begin research into data compression and you are a newbie this book is a must have.
Very well-written book, software not so good.......2003-04-25
The book is one of the clearest I have read as a text book. Why cant everybody write like this?? There is very good flow throughout the text.
Only complaint is the software. It looks the software has not kept pace with the book itself. Some additional software has to be added (for Transform coding, for instance), and some references in the text book to the software are incorrect. If the accompanying software is upgraded, as it should be, I will rate this book a clear 5-star.

Calvert's Gold - Book Review.......2004-02-25
The story in CALVERT'S GOLD, by Phyllis Johnson, gives a very accurate, detailed account of rural life in the 1920's and 1930's in the very historic Maryland county, celebrating its 350th anniversary this year. A reader can find humor in the story, may reminisce while reading about the Southern Maryland traditions, may want to try the old recipes, and may experience vicariously the peaceful life before televisions and computers. The book also makes a plea to save the small farms. This story highlights a way of life that is worth remembering.
CALVERT'S GOLD has all the "ingredients" for a worthwhile, real life movie that will appeal to viewers of all ages.

As a teacher, I would recommend using the story in Calvert's Gold, by Phyllis S. Johnson, as additional reading in literature classes or in history classes. It is interesting reading for old and
young. The writer uses great detail and explanation to help give the reader an understanding of the way life was on a small family farm in the late 1920's.

When I picked-up this book from our best-reader Friend, who gave us a chapter from SIMPLE TRUTHS, I expected it to be equally as simply written! Not simple in the ways of writing or organized! Since his Prologue, entitled "A CANTICLE OF ECHOES, Kent grasped my attention with his first quote from a - Pueblo saying, "We do not own the land. We belong to it. And by our sweat & breath shall she know us, and welcome us upon our return."
Kent begins: "We are children on this land a shadow on the still life of time.." Employing words as far more than commentary to his Pueblo saying. He measures words economically descibing past generations "whose arrival is scribed upon the line of history...(yet not adrift) on winds of story, or float upon the shrouds of myth!" I read in his brevity, layers of past, present & future!
From earlier pages he takes us back to BURIAL, "My home is over there. Now I remember it." - A Tewa song..."I am standing before a northern lake on a windswept point of land as a young Indian boy is lowered into the earth by his friends and family.
"It is a strange and lonely funeral-- they all are in their own way...In the Indians who made their home here-- like my young departed friend-- Something lives that invests this harsh land with spiritual values."
Kent never misses chances to relate the present back to the past history of his Northern Lands, even in his continued quoting of Indian Tribes: As in NATVITY: "What is life?...It is the breath of the buffalo in the winter time..." I found this book by accident. I liked the title and I love nature writing. But this isn't nature writing like anything I have ever read. This is some of the most beautiful poetry and storytelling I have ever read. It is the most spiritual nature writing I have ever read. This book took me to a place like prayer. For someone learning Tagalog this is a pretty comprehensive dictionary. It's easy to use and not too bulky. I highly recommend this dictionary.
Good... but a little vague on certain definitions.......2007-09-17
My fiancee is Filipina and I have been learning Tagalog. She always gets a good laugh whenever I try to formulate a sentence by looking up words (I'll always end up putting something in the wrong order or using some word that isn't exactly appropriate for the context). This dictionary has been very helpful in learning new words. Occasionally, however, there will be a definition that needs a little more than what is given. The best example I can think of is the word "syota". The dictionary defines it as "boyfriend / girlfriend". When I lovingly referred to my fiancee one day as "aking magandang syota" ("my beautiful girlfriend"), she asked me what I meant by the word "syota". When I explained, she told me that "syota" is a colloquial term that derives from the word for "short" and typically means a short-term boyfriend / girlfriend.
Overall, this is a very good dictionary with a lot of great information. It won't teach you everything, but you will typically learn the most of a language by practice and studying. This is a very handy reference supplement.

I like to carry this dictionary with me while learning and speaking Tagalog. It is comprehensive enough that every word I've searched for has been in it.

This is a really good dictionary to use while learning the Tagalog language. My only word of advise it to have someone who knows the language who can help you on what words to use. The dictionary covers many dialects and also covers words that are everywhere from very formal to very crude.

To start off with I love this dictonary. I have used this book for over 4 years now. I used when I lived in the philippines for 2 years and had to learn tagalog. I've been home now for 2 years and still use it all the time. It has almost any word you will ever come across and then some. It gives a list on Tagalog Orthography, affixes, infixes, suffixes, prefixes and others. It has a basic grammer chart and explanation. My experiance learning tagalog would have been much harder with out this must have dictonary.

I honestly really loved this book.
The strongest point, I feel is the dialouge. I personally like a book with a lot of talking opposed to a lot of useless detail. Every girl can see theirself in Abigail and every Abigail knows a Josh. That first love you just can't get out of your heart.
The book was sweet and innocent a wonderful choice for girls 13 and up. No emphasis on sex or drugs, so it's real and yet wholesome.
The user below couldn't be more wrong. It's called demographics, I'd highly doubt a male to enjoy a book that was meant as a real life romance for teen girls.

This book is boring. It was written by an 18-year-old aspiring literary agent who only wrote it to get her foot in the door. The way I see it, she's going to need bandages for all five toes, because the plot is underdeveloped, the characters are transparent, and the flow is poor. Save yourself the trouble of self-inflicting pain.

Its been awhile since I've read it, but I remember the links between the characters and how strong they are. This is an excellent book, and I think that 1-Jessica Kosko is going FAR in life...

I read this book out of curiosity. The author was from an area of Pennsylvania I once knew well. Most new authors write about what they know. I thought it would be interesting to read about old haunts...however very little of the story took place in PA. Most of the book took place in a small town in New York. Although I am long passed the teeny-bopper era, I must admit it held my interest.
It is a sweet love story, so like the first romances many teens experience...the intense, painful first-loves that awaken new emotions, confuse and overwhem the young. Many will relate to the teen problems, experience the thrill of proms, first dates, teenage problems, hangouts, relationships, the aches and pains of young adults coming-of-age; competition among peers, baseball games, parental problems, jealousy, secrets, whispers, first jobs, coffehouses, pizza parlors...typical teenage situations.
Characterization is strong and easy to visualize. Kosko writes dialogue easily, although at times it can be repetitive, but not enough to not want to finish the novel.
I recommend it for young adults, especially those who enjoy romance novels.
All in all, I enjoyed watching the development of her likeable characters. I am sure young girls will be reading more of Jessica Kosko novels in the future.
Angels,Tears,and Teddybears.......2002-04-25
Angels,Tears,and Teddybears is one of the best books I've ever read. I can really relate to Abigal. Everything she goes through seems so real, it's like reading someone's diary. The other characters are great too. I wish I could find a guy like Josh. Even though he seems like a jerk at times, his intentions are good. This book was written by a teen, which is why I think it's so believable. I have two more words for you BUY IT!
