Dialogue--a carefully structured communications technique that is generally employed to promote mutual understanding between bona fide as well as potential adversaries--has been responsible for such seminal events as ending the cold war and initiating (albeit briefly) a Middle East peace accord. But business, says well-known social scientist and public-opinion specialist Daniel Yankelovich, also can utilize the process to develop "webs of relationships" that encourage the acceptance and increase the adoption of any company's plans and visions. The Magic of Dialogue outlines 15 specific strategies (such as "Focus on common interests, not divisive ones" and "Use specific cases to raise general issues") that can be successfully applied in situations ranging from routine meetings and casual encounters to corporate retreats and union negotiations. While admitting it "is not a panacea for all the problems that ail us," Yankelovich incorporates real-life examples and suggestions to support his contention that "when dialogue is done skillfully, the results can be extraordinary." --Howard Rothman

Book Description

In this groundbreaking work, famed social scientist and world-famous public opinion expert Daniel Yankelovich reinvents the ancient art of dialogue.

Successful managers have always known how to make decisions and mobilize coworkers. But as our businesses continue to expand, conversations and discussions just aren't enough to bring people and their different agendas together anymore. Dialogue, when properly practiced, will align people with a shared vision, and help them realize their full potential as individuals and as a team. Drawing on decades of research and using real life examples, The Magic of Dialogue outlines specific strategies for maneuvering in a wide range of situations and teaches managers, leaders, business people, and other professionals how to succeed in the new global economy, where more players participate in decision-making than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars The Magic of Dialogue.......2006-02-24

This is an easy to read book with some great ideas; particularly if you work in the public sector and are interested in public participation.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book- He Should Be President!.......2002-09-30

This book gives practical, real-life examples of how to begin and continue a dialogue. This is NOT a book teaching you how to run a meeting. It is much more than that!
I wholeheartedly recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars Too shallow.......2001-10-31

This book covers a lot of grounds and principles. However each principle is discussed only briefly making it very difficult for the readers to put those principle into practice, thus making the book not very useful.

2 out of 5 stars Not a lot on practical implmentation.......2001-04-06

Thisis book gives a lot of stratgies but does not give many examples of how to implement those strategies, and thus rendering the materials given in this book not very useful.

5 out of 5 stars More Shared Space for Better Alternatives and Cooperation!.......2000-09-29

Think of this book as a work of applied emotional intelligence. Fans of Daniel Goleman (author of Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence at Work) will applaud this book, for it helps to expand the emotional intelligence of us all in collectively developing and agreeing to better solutions for emotionally and factually difficult issues.

For some time, the decision theorists have been focusing on ways to structure joint decisions (such as those involved in negotiations) to help the people involved perceive the shared interests they have, and how to serve them. In books like Getting to Yes, Getting Past Now, Smart Choices, and (most recently) Beyond Winning, we are encouraged to open up the scope of our considerations with others to find solutions that serve both sides well. Those books appeal to the intellect and are quite valuable for defining the game-playing and quantitative aspects of the issues.

As an example(from Getting to Yes), two children are fighting over an orange. The parent decides the battle by cutting the orange in half, and giving one-half to each child. One child eats the fruit and throw away the peel from his half. The other child uses the peel for cooking and throws away the fruit. Even though the solution of giving all the peel to the child who wants to cook and all the fruit to the child who wants to eat it would have been perfect, that option never emerged. Everyone is the loser relative to the ideal solution.

In The Magic of Dialogue, Professor Daniel Yankelovich takes on the lack of shared emotional space from the perspective of sociology, and extends the understanding of working with others that we all need to create these win-win alternatives and agreements. I found this book to be an important expansion of the subject matters of collaborative thinking and problem solving.

The book is organized around first establishing collaboration as a much-needed expansion of the way we interact with others. Next, the book does an excellent job of defining 15 strategies (neatly summarized on pages 127-128, following excellent earlier discussions and examples), and outlining 10 potholes that can get in the way (as bad thinking habits) immediately after the summaries of the 15 strategies.

Without giving you the whole list, the essence of the concepts here is to create an emotional linkage that allows us to feel empathetic towards the other person. This primarily occurs because we sense that the other person is willing to look at things from our perspective, and that we share either common ideas or values that we can respect. After that linkage is established, more information is shared, understood, and incorporated in the group thinking. More empathy builds to more sharing, which leads to more understanding, and so forth. Basically, we can create avirtuous cycle of collaboration and cooperation.

The greatest strength of the book is in providing examples of how such emotional connection occurred in many different and difficult situations, both humble (school policy decisions being discussed among parents and teachers) and exalted (arms negotiations during the cold war).

Inthe final part of the book, Professor Yankelovich focuses on fundamental flaws in the way we dialogue in the United States. By making these flaws explicit, he helps us each become more aware of these issues so we can begin to overcome them. One of the most interesting to me was the idea of considering things as either from afactual or an emotional perspective, with factual being assumed to be superior in our culture. In technical issues involving physical items, that priority for the factual makes sense. With people issuesin social situations, it often doesn't. Combining both perspectives often works best for social issues. I found that Professor Yankelovich's perspective in describing what we should pay attention to (depending on the subject) to be valuable. He also has a number of useful things to say about how to combine the two perspectives to derive better solutions and decisions (for example, inhow free markets should be combined with governmental limits and social civility).

Each issue also comes with an explanation of how one can facilitate a better dialogue by varying formats and type of facilitation employed. One of the most striking examples was an outline for how to conduct a national debate on the future of social security that would resonate with each of us, and help us create a national consensus at the voter level. He proposes using research to create a series of televised dialogues among people who represent the major points of view among the electorate (rather than the experts and legislators) to consider the ethical, moral, and economic perspectives that need to be reconciled.

Anyone who is concerned about lack of progress in solving problems where everyone in a group has a vested interest will find this book to be relevant and valuable. These concepts can be applied to personal relationships, solving problems at work, or to important social issues.

After you have finished reading this book, I strongly urge you to pick an area which you care about that has been a persistent problem for a long time. Use the book to diagnose why dialogue has been stalled, and use the book's recommendations to overcome those stalls. After you have succeeded in one area, repeat the process.

Get out of the potholes and back on the rapid road to mutual progress!

      Book Description

Industry is intelligent action, motion, movement. And now science tells us that thought also is a physical action, a movement, a vibration of the cells of the brain. Wandering, dreamy thought is merely bad habit, or, more properly, lack of a good habit, for it leads nowhere. To carry bricks back and forth from one side of the street to the other is not industry, because it lacks intelligent purpose. To think and make no headway is simply to carry bricks back and forth. ¬ -from "The Master Man" Elbert Hubbard was one of the most respected journalists and most in-demand lecturers of the early 20th century, and this 1921 book of cheerful, useful advice for succeeding at work-and at life-makes clear why he was so popular. In this collection of little nuggets of business wisdom, Hubbard shares his wonderfully eccentric outlook on such topics as: . genius and the line between failure and success . the secret of success . the surprising importance of advertising . the virtues of useful work . the necessity of thrift . and much, much more. Drawing on the lives of famous folk from William Morris to Adam Smith and with a knowing, amusing wit, this is the work of a true American original. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Little Journeys to the Homes of Great Businessmen. American freethinker ELBERT GREEN HUBBARD (1856-1915) was editor and publisher of the monthly magazines The Philistine (1895-1915) and The Fra (1908-1917). Among his many books are The Man: A Story of Today (1891), Forbes of Harvard (1894), No Enemy (but Himself) (1894), and The Man of Sorrows (1905).

          Book Description

Planthoppers include some of the most devastating pests of major agricultural crops throughout the world. One species, the rice brown planthopper, is among the most economically important pests in Asia. In past decades, government policies encouraged the control of rice planthoppers with synthetic pesticides, a tactic which promoted insecticide resistance and often led to the pesticide-induced resurgence of pest populations. To deter planthopper outbreaks, a more ecologically sound management strategy is being implemented, one based on a thorough investigation of population dynamics, natural enemies, and the genetics of host plant and insecticide adaptation. In the natural habitats of North America and Europe, scientists have also used planthoppers as model organisms to test ecological and evolutionary theory. The consequence of these diverse studies is an extremely scattered literature on planthoppers that has never been synthesized from an ecological perspective. This volume summarizes what is known about planthopper ecology and biological control. It takes a theoretical approach yet is deeply concerned with the application of theory to the practical problems of pest management.

            5 out of 5 stars A LANDMARK PUBLICATION.......2005-01-10

That John James Audubon was America's foremost naturalist there can be no doubt. That John James Audubon: The Watercolors for the Birds of America, published by Villard Books in association with the New York Historical Society, is a landmark publication there should be no doubt.

A companion volume to a museum exhibition, this magnificent presentation of 470 color illustrations is a significant contribution to the worlds of art, nature and ornithology. In addition to the stunningly reproduced art, the volume contains four excellent articles: Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr. examines Audubon's artistic development; Annette Blaugrund discusses his skills as an entrepreneur; Amy Meyers presents Audubon as a naturalist; and Reba Fishman Snyder sheds light on the technical aspects of the watercolors.

John James Audubon: The Watercolors for the Birds of America is a superb representation of the works of an artist and naturalist who knows no peer.

Excellent scholarly work that explains and shows what Audubon did, and how he did it. As a collector of original Audubon Havell prints, I found the introductory chapters to be informative, readable and very helpful. Wonderful explanations of his technique. About eighty of the plates are rendered nearly full size in this large book. The other 390 are included in an index as full-color 3 X 4 prints. All of the 435 original "Birds of America" images are in this book as well as quite a few other Audubon watercolors that were never syndicated for printing. There are several appendices including one that lists the actual size of each watercolor. Very helpful to a collector. I especially enjoy comparing Audubon's original watercolor paintings depicted in this book, with the large, excellent renderings of the Havell prints in "Audubon Birds of America" by Tim Parmentor, also available from Amazon. My one tiny complaint is that all of the color images are designated by the Roman numerals that Audubon assigned to them. Pain in the neck. Great gift book for both art students and birdwatchers.

                            5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2007-08-09

This book by Kyra and Jytte Lemkow (International Dressage Judge, journalist and photographer) is one of the more impressive contemporary books on Classical riding, and one from which the reader will definitely benefit. Worth every penny of its price.
The last chapter alone, on "mental training", preparing yourself psychologically to go into the ring and compete, will improve your scores.
Kyra has a clear and simple riding system, but she stresses that every horse is an individual, and you have to adapt training protocols to fit the unique personalities and body types. She talks about a respectful partnership, and how the horse must work with joy and not anxiety, and of the dangers of "desensitizing" the horse with too many demands or signals at the same time. The overriding message of this book is to keep the horse's front end free so he can find his own balance without a "blocking hand" as he is developing, and not to force the horse to work in a fixed frame too soon.
This book also has concise step-by-step diagrams of exercises for training the horse in canter, counter canter, change of leg, half pass, zigzag, etc., and also valuable exercises to check if the horse is reacting correctly to the rider's aids.
I found it amazing to see in the photos that Kyra's horse will perform a piaffe in hand by being stroked gently on the neck with the whip. Also apparent in the photos is the connection and trust between Kyra and her horses that can only be achieved by sensitivity and kindness.

after reading this book from the Library and being only one copy it was wonderfull to purchase one for myself at such a reasonable cost, it is a great book and I only wish that I had of purchased it several years ago, now I have it to read and re-read when ever I feel the need to train my horse.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, easy to follow and a pleasure to read........2006-06-19

This must be the best ever dressage training book I have read and used. It is written in a manner that it is not at all boring. The exercises are easy to follow and put into practice. I have tried them on my young horse and they worked exceptionally well. This book is for all horses/riders and can be used at the level you are at. I am now a veteran rider and successful teacher and competitor - there's always something to learn!

                            1 out of 5 stars overrated.......2001-06-20

I have read 'Dressur Med Kyra' (in both Danish and Swedish). I doubt this translation will improve upon it. Clearly - I have been told -- Kyra is an excellent instructor. This book (written together with a colleague of Kyra) is more of a showcase thing. I'd stick with Podhasky, la Guérinière, or Müseler (if you can get a hold of a copy). Most dressage and horsemanship (some arguably so) books at ... are getting the 4-5 star treatment. Every book has its fans. This rating, though, would be very misleading regarding Kyras book.

5 out of 5 stars Change of Opinion.......2000-06-15

Initially, I purchased this book and was very unhappy with the choice of pictures. I think many of the horses look like they are fighting. BUT, I saw Kyra in person and she was excellent; very soft and gentle handling of the horses. No yanking or cranking. She insisted on more relaxed necks. So, I decided to give the book another chance and I am glad I did. Kyra gives really excellent descriptions and techniques that you can use right away.

5 out of 5 stars so fabulous i have no words!.......2007-07-28

This book is so great! I just realized today (July 28, 07) that a new edition just came out. However; as most of the other reviewers have said,
this book has a few little problems which I hope were fixed in the new edition. Since the new edition does not have the "search inside" feature I can't tell you if they were corrected or not
                            1. It it printed from right to left, and those of us who are accustomed
to praying from left to right will find it confusing.
                            2. You must have a good base from which to pick out the words you are looking for because there are ALOT OF WORDS IN THERE TO REMEMBER!
                            3. READ THE EXPLANATIONS on how to look up the verbs, otherwise
you will not know what is going on. It took me a while to figure it out
                            4. a little hint; At the top of each conjugation it says, for example,
"to become complicated" you will see all the conjugations in present past future and command versions only for "to become complicated" the next
paragraph will say "to complicate" with the same conjugations of only
this form of the verb. Then the next paragraph will say "to become complicated", with the same forms of the verb
the part I actually enjoy the most is the sentences (lots of them!) using
all forms of the verb, and colloquial usage of the verbs. You learn tons
just by reading those sentences! Thank you Mr. Bolozky!

I am several months into seriously trying to learn Hebrew, at the point where I need to expand my verbs and get a better feel for conjugational patterns. There's one helpful Hebrew Verbs website, but other than that, full conjugations of a wide range of verbs with the vowel markings to guide pronunciation is nowhere to be found.

But yes, I broke the binding the second day -- it seems to be holding up to constant use, but you have to lay something heavy across it to keep it flat while you're reading.

I am glad I purchased this book, however it is lacking. Expansion rules are specified but not explained. Sentence use examples are given, but points are excluded from other words used in the sentence. Nouns (even the basic ones) formed from the verbs arenot provided along with other things mentioned by other reviewers. If this book was made complete it would be have to be physically larger and thicker than its already almost one thousand pages. But, if complete, it would be a must-buy.

5 out of 5 stars Unique Hebrew reference.......2006-07-05

I find this unique Hebrew reference book quite useful for Hebrew/English translation. Knowing the three-letter Hebrew verb root allows quick translation plus provides a full aray of associated verb forms. It is a great learning tool.

                            Book Description

Francis (soon to be nicknamed Stuff) doesn't know anyone when he first moves to 116th Street in Harlem. But all that changes when he meets Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Gloria. Stuff and the gang grow close that eventful year, and nothing is ever quite the same. It's the year modern science gets them all in jail, Stuff falls in love and is unfaithful, and Cool Clyde and Fast Sam win the dance contest—almost. In this lively and funny book, Walter Dean Myers brings to life with tenderness and good humor a group of kids who together grow to know the meaning of friendship.

I thought the book was pretty good. Wasn't the best book I ever read, but it wasn't bad either. At some points in the book, it confused me. It did because one chapter would end and then I would start the next chapter but, this chapter would have a whole different point. Other than that, the book was really good. The book takes place in New York City. This book is about a group of boys dealing with everyday problems for them. I loved the way the author put you into the book. I also loved how funny the book was. If you are looking forward to read this book, I would definitely consider reading the prologue first. You should read the prologue first because it tells how all of the friends on 116th street. I hope this book makes you laugh just as much as it made me. Good luck in your readings.

Back in the early 80s, when I was having a hard time reading and nothing could keep my interest, I found this book in a used book store. Something about it caught my attention. I read it and fell in love with the characters. It helped create a love for reading that I never thought I'd have. I never forgot the title and have been meaning to get myself and my niece a copy of it for a while. I'm thrilled that I've found it and I highly recommend it to any young reader.

What an awesome book. This novel takes place in New York City during the 70's. It is very entertaining. I am a teacher in an inner city school and I had my students read this. They literally would laugh aloud while reading it. Although it takes place during the 70's, there are still issues in which my students could relate. I definitely recommend this novel to middle school children, both urban and suburban. Hats off to Walter Dean Myers!

I read this book as a child in the seventies and enjoyed it at the time. Still hold up good nearly three decades later. This portrayal of ghetto life in the 70s among young people is about as accurate as it was funny. Kinda reminds you of a preteen "Cooley High" or Fat Albert with an edge, as these kids deal with realistic problems of drugs, sex, and violence. Overall, a good example of the resilience of young people without getting overly downbeat.
