Book Description
The disparity between rich and poor countries is the most serious, intractable problem facing the world today. Chronic poverty affects more than the citizens and economies of these nations; it threatens global stability as the pressures of immigration become unsustainable and rogue nations seek power and influence through extreme political and terrorist acts.
For decades, a vast array of international institutions has pumped billions of dollars into these nations in an attempt to remedy their ills through the development of technological infrastructures, educational systems, and health care programs. Yet despite this infusion of capital and attention, roughly five billion of the world's six billion people continue to live in poverty. What isn't working? And how can we fix it?
The Power of Productivity provides powerful and controversial answers to these questions. William Lewis, director emeritus of the McKinsey Global Institute, draws on extensive microeconomic studies of thirteen nations—conducted over twelve years by the Institute itself—to counter virtually all prevailing wisdom about how best to ameliorate economic disparity. The key to reducing economic inequalities between rich and poor countries, argues Lewis, is productivity and its links to competition and consumption. Diagnosing problems and offering solutions, The Power of Productivity will inform political and economic debate throughout the world for years to come.
"Lewis . . . offers a detailed look at the local economies in several parts of the world including the U.S., Japan, India and Brazil. . . . This is an insightful treatment of a complex issue that deserves a wide readership."—Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Interesting economic perspective on various countries. .......2006-10-26
This book is an interesting economic perspective on why some countries prosper and others don't. Overall, the book is heavily pro-American and the fact that the author uses the U.S. as the benchmark for his comparisons with other countries is a testament to that. The rosy explanations on the U.S. chapter reinforces the belief that it is a pro-US book.
However, it beautifully covers some of the flaws found in third world economies, especially interesting on its analysis in Brazil and India. The answer is simple, government chokes and distorts market and is much to blame for poverty and low productivity in third world countries.
All in all its a good book, but its focus is too U.S. based. Not that there is nothing wrong with that, but books that show U.S. as a near utopia and the rest of the world as problem plague are not to my liking in general, simply because no country on earth is perfect, thus whatever defects exist in the U.S. economy should had been mentioned. As an economist, I was dissapointed with the way the author avoided discussing potential problems in U.S. economy, but was more than pleased with its assessment as to why third world economies don't function as smooth and first world economies.
Limitations of economies world wide.......2006-03-30
This is an outstanding book if you want to gain some understanding of the strengths and weakensses of economies world wide. This book is essentially a group of chapters describung the differences of various other world economies compared against the US economy. The revelations of the problems in some of those economies is very revealing. For example, if you worry at night about the Indian economy, you will sleep much better after reading his chapter of the many ways the Indian government distorts their markets and guarantees bad results. You will also be amazed that only 10% of the land has clear ownership, meaning one must be extordinarily careful or one can end up in a long legal entanglement. The description of the laws forbidding large players to participate in certain sectors of their economy also is revealing.
Similarly, the descriptions of the problems of the Brazilian economy with its underground economy and formal economy is also very illuminating. Large rconomy of scale businesses competing with informal off the books busninesses. Since the off the books businesses pay lousy wages and pay no taxes they can compete with the larger businesses which have economies of scale. Mr Lewis also points out how the sector which does compete within the legal rules have a very heavy tax burden which retards growth. The legacy of hyperinflation, a well known
phenomenon in South America also means that obtaining a mortgage is impossible, houses must be paid for cash on the barrelhead, as nobody will take a 30 year risk on inflation there.
Mr Lewis's book has chapters on representative economies from all over the world. Japan, Russia, Korea, India, Western Europe,
Brazil are included. The only place of high interest which is not included is China. Regardless, the information contained is fascinating.
I also gained some new insights from this book and perhaps a bit of new respect for certain sectors. I must say Mr Lewis makes some very interesting points which have certainly increased my regard for the retailing and service sectors of an economy by pointing out some of the low tech manners in which they have innovated to increase productivity. He also shows how inefficient certain other economies are because they dont allow foreign competitiors to operate in retailing in their economies and the dramatic inefficiencies created as a result.
Overall I rate this as one of the best books I have read in a long time.
A great book.......2006-02-25
I was happy to see many of the questions I've had for years, answered. The book is very well written for the non-economist who wants to be informed about the major economic problems of the world.
I also purchased 'DOING BUSINESS IN 2006' published by the World Bank. It corroborates the general ideas presented in "The Power of Productivity" to a great extent. A great book.
Productivity rules in one particular economic doctrine.......2005-11-16
Marx once said that he was not a Marxist [Attributed by Engels, letter to C. Schmidt, 1890]. It looks like William Lewis is not allowed that luxury, for in a sense the claim that it is productivity that matters most is a pure Marxists claim.
So there is a contradiction. The book that promotes "free market" extremism like "free market no matter what" in its major thesis looks suspiciously close to Marxist philosophy.
Actually extremes meet and the author's idea "If poor countries improved productivity and balanced their budgets, they would have plenty of capital for growth from domestic savers and foreign investors" is a clear sign that he is living in some Utopia and does not undestand the role of third world debt as a major instrument for controlling the governments of those countries. This process is designed to perpetuate itself whereby debt replicates itself on an ever greater scale.
For example odious debt of former communist countries was never cancelled and people of xUSSR paid and will pay huge prices for this. Legally, odious debt is debt that resulted from loans to an illegitimate or dictatorial government that used the money to oppress the people or for personal purposes.
Rich nations also ncur debts, but often the wealthier and more powerful ones are able to use various means to avoid getting into the dilemmas and problems the poor nations get into. It's easier to have debt if your own currency is the world reserve currency.
That means that globalization like medicine should not be applied uncritically. The real question is about the right doze of everything. Here is a couple of nice quotes for Asia Times Review of the same book, the review that debunks the myths propagated by the book:
"Of the world's 6 billion people, 5 billion live in countries with per capita gross domestic product (GDP) 25% or less of the US figure; in fact, a majority of the poor live where GDP is less than 10% of Uncle Sam's. Particularly troubling, author William W Lewis says, Japan was the only country to go from poor to rich during the past century, though he adds that Japanese government development strategies credited with the advance were a hindrance, not a help. "
"The failure of free-market radicalism to solve crises and deliver real, sustainable economic growth has prompted a reassessment. Perhaps wrenching open developing markets to global competition without reference to local conditions and politics is not the best prescription in every case. They also note that the fastest-growing economy over the past two decades features 'socialism with Chinese characteristics'. "
Excellent book despite flaws.......2005-02-11
There is an excellent book about productivity. Bill Lewis was head of McKinsey, the international consulting firm, for 12 years. They did a lot of studies of different business sectors around the world under his leadership, and this book pulls all of these together. It is a compelling case for free-market competition, which is what drives higher productivity and creates a larger pie for everyone to share.
I think Lewis is pretty much misguided about macro-economic issues (I think the reason that there were so many international crisis in 1998 was because of the Fed's mistakes in monetary policy causing the dollar to deflate), and he believes Jared Diamond's arguments about why Western culture has been so successful (Diamond is not a master of logic, and ignores or discounts other possible explanations, such as are presented in IQ and the Wealth of Nations), and Lewis makes mistakes in the way he averages productivity across sectors (you really need to look at absolute productivity in some way for averages to be meaningful), but it is still an excellent book because of the compelling case he makes for competition driving productivity increases, and the way he lays out the barriers to productivity growth in different nations.
I also wish he had spent more time explaining why higher productivity makes everyone better off. He does cover this to some extent, but not with the power that it deserves.
Still, 5 stars because the good stuff is outstanding.

Book Description
"Please--no apple blossoms!" protests author Robert Price, speaking of his approach to the Johnny Appleseed story. For over a quarter century Mr. Price has followed the circuitous trail of the elusive folk hero. Says the author: "Perhaps my bent for the outdoors, travel, and music shows up in this book. John Chapman's story has only recently emerged from a cloud of popular sentimentalism to become a major national myth in which 'Johnny Appleseed' is a symbol of everything good associated with the development of the land. To show this evolution, I have tied his drama not just to history and folklore, but to American topography. Most of his trail I have trampled or driven over from Leominster, Mass., to Fort Wayne."
After rural school teaching and country newspaper reporting in the Middle West, the author graduated from Denison University, took M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University and is now professor of English at Otterbein College.
Mr. Price has written John Chapman: A Bibliography of "Johnny Appleseed" in History, Literature and Folklore, and articles for the New England Quarterly and other magazines. The Library of Congress awarded him a grant-in-aid to complete the study for the present book.

Ray's a Great Scouter Story Teller.......2001-09-06
Every troop needs Ray's two books in their Troop Library. I had the pleasure of having Ray Harriot visit my BSA summer camp for a week with his troop from Maryland and he had the camp spellbound with his riviting campfire stories.
These books are quite reasonable in price and, while available from the BSA Catalog, unfortunately not all Scout Shops carry the book.
Both of Ray's works are well worth having & they make great gifts for any Scout or Scouter.

Book Description
The First Hebrew Primer is a simple, straightforward guide to Biblical Hebrew. Thirty lessons provide enough information and practice to enable you, with the aid of a Hebrew-English dictionary, to understand most biblical texts. The goal of the Primer is to teach students to read and understand Biblical Hebrew as quickly as possible; therefore, the lessons emphasize recognition and translation - not memorization. The thirty lessons incorporate:
Verb, grammar, and spelling charts
Vocabulary lists
Oral reviews
Exercises
Stories
Biblical quotes
Book of Ruth
This revised third edition introduces several new terms and clarifies grammatical points, but will look the same to long-time Primer readers. The key change we have made is the inclusion of new explanatory endnotes. Many readers have expressed a desire to deepen their knowledge of Biblical Hebrew, but have unanimously endorsed the clear, uncomplicated tone of the Primer. We have responded by adding these optional supplementary notes. Students may read the notes to enrich their understanding of Hebrew grammar or concentrate solely on the main text. Either way, the Primer provides a sound foundation for more advanced studies in the Hebrew Bible.

The best teachable book for Hebrew beginners.......2007-07-13
I am very enthusiastic about this book. Until now, I have bought many Hebrew Grammars as the Weingreen, Pratico, Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar and others in the Greek language. None is so teachable as this one for Biblical Hebrew. The beginning is very soft and easy. There are not many grammar details or exceptions of the general rules, only the main rules. But the teaching is not simplistic; there are also endnotes, where you can read more details or exceptions.
The pronunciation is the same as in modern Hebrew. So you learn to spell ancient Hebrew as modern Israelis speak now. This is easier and useful. Other Grammars teach another way of pronunciation that could be more accurate regarding the ancient pronunciation, but Israelis don't speak now like that. So in the future, if you want, you could learn much easier the modern Hebrew.
This is not a complete Hebrew Grammar. If you want to learn more, you can buy for example the Basics of Biblical Hebrew Grammar by Pratico and Van Pelt.
It contains many exercises which make you learn the language by repetition of the words and the rules. This book doesn't contain detailed terminology. The kind of teaching is modern and pleasant.
If you are a beginner and you want to learn Biblical Hebrew, don't hesitate to buy this book. You will not waste your money. I advise you to buy also the "Primer Answer Book" of the exercises, and the "Audio Companion tape or CD set". So you could learn better the pronunciation by Hebrew teachers.
There is also an excellent digital edition for self study, which contains the Textbook, the Answer book and the Audio Companion together. You can buy the Audio CD set and the Digital Edition only by the EKS Publishing Co. (www.ekspublishing.com). The rest you can buy also by the Amazon.com.
May you enjoy teaching and learning of Biblical Hebrew by this book!

The best biblical Hebrew tutor on the market.......2007-07-08
This is easily the best Hebrew tutor that I have come across.
It builds in very tiny steps from the initial recognition of letters through to the most complex grammar. Each chapter includes far more exercises than any other book I have found. These include sight reading, vocabulary building, writing, translation (both ways) and grammar exercises. The exercises often include humerous stories and reading the book of Ruth is integrated into the process.
The appendices include verb and noun spelling charts, grammar summaries, as well as Hebrew/English and English/Hebrew glossaries of the words used in the book.
I know many people who having reached only chapter seven or eight of this 30 chapter book are already able to read Hebrew with a greater understanding than most of those around. I confess that I do not know anyone yet who has completed all thirty chapters, including myself.
This is a wonderfully constructed book that I do not hesitate to recommend to anyone wanting to learn biblical Hebrew.
Simply Amazing!.......2007-04-10
This book launches you into learning the Hebrew language in a simple, yet concise manner. You will constantly be learning new information and reviewing things already learned simultaneously. A very, very highly recomended book if you desire to learn Hebrew.
The First Hebrew Primer.......2007-03-12
I like the format and size of type. The only problem is the book asks the student to write the Hebrew, but never shows how to properly write the Hebrew letters. Simply showing us the alphabet is not enough; we need the proper way to draw the letters (right to left, not as English speaking people would write).
It would also be good to include the meanings of the words somewhere.
You probably need this and will need more.......2007-02-19
On the plus side:
(1) This book can be used for self-study. At the outset you will probably welcome someone to delineate the Hebrew characters and pronounce the sounds for you, but after that you will manage to work through the text even by yourself.
(2) No grammar for grammar's sake. This book is aimed at teaching the minimum you need before tackling your first OT chapters.
(3) Well chosen and highly recurrent vocabulary. After that much repetition you will memorize most of the words effortlessly.
(4) Lots of exercises. Generally speaking, exercises are better dull than difficult--and these aren't even dull all the time.
(5) Crisp fonts, clear layout. Given the unfamiliar Hebrew alphabet, this is quite important, and yet many primers (especially older ones) fail to meet the condition.
On the minus side:
(1) Grammar fragmented and oversimplified. You don't really get what you need to grasp even the simplest OT passages. Terminologically and even notionally, this book leaves you where it found you, unable to understand what any relevant grammar has to tell you about the language.
(2) Ivrit under a Biblical disguise. Much of this text is best described as Modern Hebrew without modern words, some of the basic features of Biblical Hebrew having been pushed aside as mere details of style. The overall picture you get is false. (I am not one of those who believe Biblical Hebrew should be taught exclusively on bits and pieces taken from the OT. Still, what is needed is a reasonably good pastiche, not the image of two Tel Avivis engaging in a weird conversation about the king's cattle, the three little pigs and the altars of Yhwh.)
Advice:
The pluses of this text outweigh its minuses. Unless you like stiff textbook prose and a steep learning curve, you will probably find it useful. You may buy it together with another excellent book, Lambdin's "Introduction to Biblical Hebrew", which is rather more serious: work through the first ten chapters of the Primer, then start using Lambdin as a second-wave text.

Great book to start with.......2003-01-22
Showing the best of the game, the Angelic players guide gives so many ideas on playing a truly angelic character. But, you really need the core rules book, and the Infernal Players guide. Its also a good idea to have Liber Canticorum, the book of songs. Otherwise your character will only have the few powers in the Angelic Player's Guide. So, while its a good book, you need more than just the book to successfully play In Nomine.
the best In Nomine book ever.......1999-09-24
that's right, i said "ever". this is the most captivating, best illustrated, and most useful book for In Nomine that i have seen. not only does it really let players and GMs figure out angelic life, trials, and tribulations, but it makes anyone wonder what those demons are talkin' 'bout. personally, it made me turn from a GM who never really thought about playing, into a psycho-smart GM who would kill for the chance to use my Ofanite of Creation (in service to Yves, of course). the only other book that has even close to this much to offer to IN enthusiasts is Revelations II: The Marches, for its Sorcerer rules and its Marches info (buy both!).

Sam and Derek,Derek and Sam.......2005-12-13
I recommend this book for people to read because I thought it was a great book to read. I liked reading this book because of the interesting things that happened. This book was about two boys named Derek and Sam, who meet each other at a bus station in New York City. The thing that was the most exciting was that both boys looked exaclty alike and they have never met each other in the whole entire life. They thought it would be fun to switch lives. Sam was going to get on a bus to get to his new prep school and Derek was getting on a bus to go to Las Vegas. Both boys switched bus tickets and were off to their new lives for now on.
I liked reading this book because it was fun to read. It was interesting to read because I found some funny things in it. My favorite part of the book was when both boys switched their bus tickets to go live the other ones life. I learned that even though Sam didnt know anything about Derek's life or Derek not knowing anything about Sam's life, that they were able to find out how they lived. Sam found out how Derek lived on the road and Derek learned how hard it was for Sam to live his life in prep school. I liked reading this book becasue i found it fun to read.
AGAIN?!?!?!.......2001-07-19
This is a boys version of Janine and Alex, Alex and Janine. It's the usual Prince And The Pauper thing. It's poorly written and too predictable. (J and A, A and J is too but it's more modern and and interesting.)
Double Take.......2000-04-05
Well to be honest, I picked up this book off the shelf and thought, "Hey, another one of those books Michael Levin wrote. Needless to say, if you have read Janine and Alex, Alex and Janine it is not as good. It is from a girls point of view I am saying this though. The book is about Derek, a runaway and Sam, a prepschool guy that meet and decide to trade places. The story takes many twists and turns and keeps you involved. I thought it was okay. I would recommend it if you like teen novels.

All children want reassurance that their parents' love runs wide and deep. In Guess How Much I Love You, a young rabbit named Little Nutbrown Hare thinks he's found a way to measure the boundaries of love. In a heartwarming twist on the "I-can-do-anything-you-can-do-better" theme, Little Nutbrown Hare goes through a series of declarations regarding the breadth of his love for Big Nutbrown Hare. But even when his feelings stretch as long as his arms, or as high as his hops, Little Nutbrown Hare is fondly one-upped by the elder rabbit's more expansive love.
Anita Jeram's illustrations are bound to elicit an "aw" from even the sternest of readers; these loving rabbits are expressive, endearing, and never cloying. In turn, Sam McBratney tells a simple bedtime story of sweet familial love with humor, insight, and a delightful surprise at the end. Children and parents will love snuggling up for this one--a treat to be read again and again, just before the lights are turned out. (Click to see a sample spread. Text © 1994 by Sam McBratney. Book Description
"Guess how much I love you," says Little Nutbrown Hare. Little Nutbrown Hare shows his daddy how much he loves him: as wide as he can reach and as far as he can hop. But Big Nutbrown Hare, who can reach farther and hop higher, loves him back just as much. Well then Little Nutbrown Hare loves him right up to the moon, but that's just halfway to Big Nutbrown Hare's love for him.

The first time I heard of this book was in my childbirth class. I loved it so much I had to buy it. I'm hoping it will become one of my baby's favorite books.
Good all-around baby book.......2007-09-19
I bought this baby book based on the reviews and the fact that Guess How Much I Love You is one of my favorite children's books. The book does a nice job of asking enough questions to make a complete record for your baby without being overly burdensome. Some of the other books I looked at seriously asked what the weather was on the day you found out your were pregnant. Seriously, who would care about that? This baby book also gives great suggestions for a few pictures which is helpful--like the place to put a picture of you pregnant. I am very pleased.
Don't Like the Message.......2007-09-15
I know many people love this book. I don't know why. We received one as a gift, and after reading it to my daughter, I was disturbed by the story. I felt sorry for the bunny whose parent invalidated his expression of love on each page. As many other reviewers said, it was a competition the adult wouldn't let the child win. This book contains a mean-spirited, misguided, sad, and disturbing message.
Family favorite.......2007-08-01
"Guess how much I love you" is a classic. The story is a simple dialog between a big rabbit (the parent) and a little rabbit (the baby), each professing and comparing the depth & "height" of their love for each other. We read this book almost every day to our infant daughter. She loves the watercolor illustrations & coos at the pictures. A lovely addition to a kid' book collection.
Wonderful - this really is a very good book.......2007-07-24
This is a fabulous book for little children and the grownups who read to them. When children are read to daily, they learn to love reading. Perfect bedtime stories, to calm everyone down and make us ready for sweet dreams. If you can find the LARGE size book get it- they're fabulous keepsakes. Perfect gifts for any child, and a perfect tradition in your own home and family!
