Book Description

Synopsis of the Book

The Secrets of Wealth follows the story of David Allen, a recent college graduate who is trying to figure out how to manage his finances and invest for the future. A little zealous at times, he's fortunate to have found Mark Mathers, a savvy real estate investor and business owner who has offered to show David the ropes. They meet every Saturday morning at the local library to cover off on one of ten Secrets of Wealth.

The Secrets as you'll learn are not groundbreaking, revolutionary ideas or strategies. They're simply the stuff that works when it comes to saving, budgeting, investing, and becoming Financially Free. You've probably read about a few of them in the past and you may have already put some of them to work for you, but you just don't know it yet.

The idea behind the book is to create a set of easy to follow and easy to remember strategies and techniques for people to use in order to get control over their financial and personal lives. The book is unique for a personal finance book in that one of the Secrets actually talks about the importance of Investing in Yourself. In short, the author has done a lot of research into what the truly rich did when they were starting out and put it all into this book.

What Sets The Secrets of Wealth Apart

As you read through this synopsis and the book, you're not going to encounter too many revolutionary ideas. Many of the "Secrets" have been written about before in other books. What differentiates this book is the:

The Conversational Manner in which the subjects are discussed. Fables and stories have been one of the best ways to engage readers and get them interested in learning more. But this type of treatment is unusual for books on finance and investing.

Just 10 Things to Remember:

By sectioning the material into ten Secrets, readers can easily identify with the strategies and tactics that they should use. For instance one of the chapters in The Millionaire Next Door talks about being frugal, but readers don't come away with that concept as well as they could had the authors labeled the chapter: LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS. If you take a look at the table of contents and read through the Secrets enough, you can easily recall the chapters and what you should (and shouldn't) be doing to build wealth.

Universal Methods of Achieving Wealth:

Whether you're just starting out or have your wealth-building machine in place, this book can help you. Most books on "getting rich" just focus on only what has worked for one person or a small group of people. This book will tell you how you can get rich investing through the stock market, or managing your finances, or real estate. In short, every reader, whether they have $10 a month or $1,000 a month to invest, will be able to use the principles and techniques discussed in this book.

Action Plans You Can Use:

There are Action Plans that appear at the end of each chapter that help guide the beginning wealthbuilder. Most books leave readers wanting to take action, but unsure of where to begin. Sure everyone wants to know the difference between the rich and the poor or how some author made millions, but what do I specifically have to do in order to get to the next level in life? This book will help in this respect by providing readers with specific items and action points that they can take today, not tomorrow.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Practical and Realistic Guide.......2006-03-23

This is a great book for beginners and intermediate-levels because it covers all of the basics in great detail. Unlike some get-rich books, this is more than just inspiration; it actually gives practical steps that are quite attainable for people who don't have much money. It gives information that is much needed by people who are in debt. Topics include planning, budgeting, building your investment portfolio (stocks, bonds, index funds, etc), getting out of debt, taxes, retirement plans (401k, etc), some real estate, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2004-02-12

This is the best book I have read on personal wealth and finance and I have read most of them out their. I highly recommend this book for getting your financial life in order.

The book is laid out in a story format that keeps you interested until the end wishing there was more(luckly there is as the author has just published his second book that I eagerly await). I could not put it down. The author does a great job of providing additional information along with recommended reading at the end of each chapter.

I just wish there was a book like this 5 years ago.... I highly recommend reading this title!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! A must read........2004-01-14

The Secrets of Wealth is an excellent resource on personal finance. But this is no boring textbook. It is actually written as a story (along the same lines as Rich Dad Poor Dad). Unlike Rich Dad, Poor Dad though, The Secrets of Wealth actually gives useful advice on how to achieve each step. Marciano breaks wealth building down to 10 secrets, and provides methods of implementing and using these secrets. The Secrets are revealed to the main character, David, by his mentor Mr. Mathers. Throughout the book are tips and techniques that anyone can use to improve their financial well being. The 10 steps aren't magical or difficult. Things like goal setting, investing, budgeting, and financial planning are nothing new, but Fabman gives you the knowledge and resources to actually achieve wealth. If this book cannot help you manage your finances, nothing can. Way to go Fabman!

5 out of 5 stars A fresh look at an age old problem.......2003-12-15

This is AMAZING! Fabman, as he is known to many, has outdone himself. Informative, well produced and worth every penny of the price. His book is a MUST have.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2003-10-25

I could not put this book down! After 11 chapters i realized it was 12AM and i had to go to sleep. I was so insipired by the way in which the author explains how to take control not only your finances but of your life, health, family, and friendships. It is a very straight-forward approach to life as a whole and that to me is truly inspirational!

    Book Description

The quality management revolution has resulted in considerable trial and error as well as frustration. Here is a book that explores why many management trends don't translate into process improvement. It recommends establishing a condition of "rationality" as a guide and measure for all organizational and quality improvement efforts. Instead of imposing radical new "breakthroughs", Phoenix Without the Ashes: Achieving Organizational Excellence Through Common Sense Management suggests an approach that fits with the normal routines and operations of an organization in a way that makes sense. Part One of this text discusses the nature of common sense, and of quality as a condition of organizational excellence. In Part Two, the elements that negatively affect quality improvement are explained from an operating management perspective. Part Three looks at the impediments to improvement set by organizational structures. Part Four discusses the relationship among leadership, motivation, and organizational excellence, and Part Five suggests a rational strategy for effective, enduring organizational improvement. Managers in every industry will benefit from the information provided in Phoenix Without the Ashes.

Do you need to get away from the pressures of the world and the gaze of Big Brother for a while? Do you plan to live or work in a remote area where you need to be able to take care of yourself? Do you want to develop the skills to remain undiscovered in the back country - even if others are searching for you? If so, Wilderness Evasion is for you. You don't have to be on the run to benefit from this unique survival book: it includes skills you can use every day in your real life. Whether you're heading into the woods for evasion purposes or just a little relaxation, you should know what this manual can teach you about survival medicine, emergency caching, communications, food and water procurement and storage, counter anti-tracking, and the psychological aspects of being alone in the back country, among other things. The ability to remain alive, self-reliant and in control of your environment - even in the remotest of areas - is one that few people possess these days. Learning the skills taught in this book can keep you alive for as long as you need to be in the wilderness. For academic study only.

I can't say I'm planning on running away into the wilderness, but I definitely think that if you are, this is the book. It's a good read whether you're planning on running off, or just reading a good book about survival.

5 out of 5 stars If You Go Into The Woods - READ THIS BOOK.......2007-04-28

I have to confess to being a fan of the author Michael Chesbro. His books offer lots of practical information, and "Wilderness Evasion" is no exception. The ability to stay out of sight in remote and wilderness areas has its place even today. Wilderness Evasion teaches you how to avoid being tracked, how to build low-key shelters, how to avoid dogs, find food, and generally 'stay lost' when you want to.
I am not a big outdoorsman, but I do like to take weekend backpacking trips, and this book has taught me how to avoid and evade the two-legged predators one sometimes meets in remote and out-of-the-way place.

GREAT BOOK - Get It While You Can!

                  5 out of 5 stars Wilderness Evasion.......2007-04-10

Anyone interested in the outdoors should read this book. Lots of useful information. I am an avid hiker and tracker and have read many books on these subjects as well as backcountry medicine and this book had many things which i had not even considered. Good read!

4 out of 5 stars Good but basic book.......2007-04-10

Good but basic. I guess this can be said about most of these books, you'll have to buy several and do your own personal research no matter what book you buy. I picked up quite a few new skills and great ideas from this book so I highly recommend it. Most of us aren't fugitives but we do want to know how to keep a low profile when we are in the wilderness and if need be to know how to escape if someone happens to be following us for whatever reason. My advice would be, buy this book.

                  3 out of 5 stars If you're nuts.......2006-11-04

This book isn't too bad if you are a fugitive and would like to know how to evade the police if they should ever come knocking on your door at 2am. If that were the case you could easily jump out of your bedroom window and get to your wilderness, that you have previously prepared for such an event, and live for months on the cache's that you hid. I guess there are a few things in this book worth taking a look at but just know that unless you are constantly looking over your shoulder for big brother you aren't going to get much out of it.

                    Book Description

Following the success of 100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know, the editors of the American Heritage® Dictionaries have developed this new book of 100 words tailored especially to high school freshmen. This second book in the 100 Words series focuses on the kinds of words that a successful middle school graduate can learn from rigorous coursework in a variety of subjects and that nearly every freshman will encounter over the course of the school year.

The words have been chosen with various criteria in mind. Some represent key concepts in important areas of the curriculum, while others are more familiar in meaning but present challenges of spelling or usage. All are words that students can expect to see regularly in their high school reading and beyond. And each word is fully defined as well as shown in typical contexts with example sentences and quotations, many of which are taken from award-winning authors such as Harper Lee, George Orwell, Katherine Paterson, and John Knowles.

Together, these 100 words represent the increasingly sophisticated and complex vocabulary that freshmen must master as they continue their education at the next level. To learn them is not only to gain useful knowledge — it is to step into a broader world.

This is an accelerating comedy with shadows setting off the wry, polished humor. Trickster deities thrive on contrariety, which is why one finds them bringing life into dead landscapes and disorder into order. A Santa Barbara insurance salesman's too-tidily-contained lifestyle, far from the Crow reservation he grew up on, is an irresistible target for Coyote, who wants to make sure his chosen people don't forget him. Coyote descends on Sam Hunter like one of Job's plagues, albeit a charmingly disingenuous one. "Why me? Why not someone who believes?" asks Sam, suffering from god-induced chaos. "This is more fun," says Coyote. He's right.

                        Book Description

From Christopher Moore, author of Fluke, comes a quirky, irreverent novel of love, myth, metaphysics, outlaw biking, angst, and outrageous redemption.

As a boy growing up in Montana, he was Samson Hunts Alone -- until a deadly misunderstanding with the law forced him to flee the Crow reservation at age fifteen. Today he is Samuel Hunter, a successful Santa Barbara insurance salesman with a Mercedes, a condo, and a hollow, invented life. Then one day, shortly after his thirty-fifth birthday, destiny offers him the dangerous gift of love -- in the exquisite form of Calliope Kincaid -- and a curse in the unheralded appearance of an ancient Indian god by the name of Coyote. Coyote, the trickster, has arrived to transform tranquillity into chaos, to reawaken the mystical storyteller within Sam ... and to seriously screw up his existence in the process.

4 out of 5 stars If You Know Someone Feeling Blue, Give Them a Moore Novel and They'll Be Smiling Again!.......2007-09-25

Coyote Blue is Moore's second novel. It probably has, in my opinion, characters which are his least likeable, but that doesn't mean you still don't want to know what is going to happen to them. Less overall eccentric characters than his other early novels but still enough for you to enjoy. If you've never read a Moore novel before I would recommend starting with Practical Demonkeeping or Bloodsucking Fiends first to really get a feel for what Moore style is all about but if this is the novel you've purchased you'll still get a fairly high dose of it.

In Coyote Blue we follow the life of Samson Hunts Alone, a Crow Indian who fled the reservation 20 years ago after killing a sleazy corrupt cop and took up the white persona of Samuel Hunter. He's become quite successful, has a nice condo (complete with eccentric neighbours), has a fair bit of money and good job. He's about to meet an ancient Crow Indian who goes by the name Coyote (who wanted to be called Eagle but you'll have to read the book to find out why he missed out). Coyote isn't the brightest ancient Indian god on the planet and certainly is happy to partake in pleasures of the flesh. His flesh can however resemble a number of creatures one being his namesake a Coyote. He's about to change Samuel's life forever and give him an understanding of his cultural heritage wether he wants it or not.

Fans of Moore will be delighted to meet a character named Minty Fresh, in Vegas who appears in the later Moore adventure A Dirty Job.

If you like the surreal eccentric character novels and have read everything Moore has written also check out the authors Bill Fitzhugh (Pest Control's a great place to start), Carl Hiassen (Stormy Weather's as good as any other), Dave Barry (Tricky Business) and Max Barry (Syrup).

                        5 out of 5 stars One of Moore's best.......2007-06-29

Having read pretty much all of Moore's other books, this one was at the top of the list for me with regards to his work; second is "Lamb" for entirely different reasons. I read this book while traveling for business, and trust me, I drew many odd glances when I'd burst out laughing. If you enjoy Tom Robbins, you'll probably enjoy this book, though it may lack some of the intricate details Robbins lends through notably diligent research.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Journey .......2007-03-10

This is a fantastic book, like and unlike every other Christopher Moore I've read. Christopher Moore's witty and intelligent humor pour through yet another eloquently detailed and researched story.

Moore takes us on an incredible journey into Samuel (Hunts Alone) Hunter's life and into his spirit. Through this journey we discover the essence of truth in life, and a way to dig ourselves out of the monotony.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting parts that don't add up..........2007-01-06

This book has all the ingredients for a dynamite book - endearing and interesting characters, funny scenarios and dialogue and a fast and engaging story line that leads up to a larger than life Act III. Unfortunately, when all the parts are added together the sum doesn't amount to much more than a pleasent smile.

Moore fans will be happy to know that the book is populated with his trademark wry comedic genius in addition to a variety of left-of-center characters. Fans will also appreciate the light and quirky story that details the trials and tribulations of a man as he comes to terms with a past that he has long denied.

But Moore fans will arguably agree (that an oxymoron?) that Coyote Blue is by far not his best effort. It is weak in it's ability to develop an attachment to the characters and to provide a plausibly unrealistic plot into which a reader could sink his/her teeth.

Coyote Blue is by no means a bad book - its a fun, fast read. It's good clean fun with a handful of smart laughs and unusual characters, but in the end it's just that its not a book that totally satisfies. Moore fans will read and enjoy. Moore neophites will wonder what all the talk is about.

I recently discovered Christopher Moore thru a friend and am still thanking him! The characters are so well developed that it seems they are actual individuals. The narrative flow is amazing and it was hard to put it down to do real-life stuff, like sleep, cook, clean, etc. I didn't want to leave the people or places Mr. Moore was taking me to. My husband, who has read a total of about 6 fictional books his entire life, read this book and is currently reading everything he can get his hands on by Mr. Moore. What a wonderful, magical, imaginative, literary ride that everyone should take. I LOVED IT!!!

I read Blue Coyote on a whim, and I loved it. In the book, Alex Beekman's best friend has disappeared, and Alex goes to find him. The search turns into a painful adventure, physically and emotionally, and Alex grows in confidence and self-acceptance. In the end, Alex is less of a boy and more of a man, prepared to make difficult decisions for himself. Besides the main plot, in which Alex finds his friend and comes to terms with being gay, the book explores Alex's relationships with his family and friends, which is often loving and sometimes strained. The author describes Vermont and California beautifully.

The book Coyote Blue is an awesome book filled with surprises! This book is about a boy named Alex who moves to a new place and struggles to find his true identity. I liked this book because it kept me on my feet and made me never want to put it down! My favorite character is this book was Jimbo because he is always there when someone needs a helping hand. Also, he isn't how I expected him to be. I thought that because the author describes him as a big man who works in a tattoo shop. My least favorite character was Ken. I said Ken because it seemed like he was trying to make Alex jealous. I know u don't know what I'm talking about but that's why you need to read this book! If people bully you around or have trouble respecting you for who you are you will love this book. One other thing that I loved about this book was the big surprise because not many authors have a twist like that.

I loved this book. It had great Characters and the story was real good. I recommend this book to anybody who likes a great story about love, friendship and just being you. If anybody knows any information about a sequel on this book please tell me. I want to hear what happens to Alex now that he is his true self.

This is a well written book. It goes along with the first book "Twelve Days in August" but you don't need to read the first one to understand what is going on. Plus, this one doesn't have more flash backs than present plot like some sequels. It adresses the issue of homosexuality in teens well, although not always true to life and other times dead on. Give this book a go. You won't be dissapointed.

This is a naturally written book (although sometimes feeling over-written) that explores the inner world of a young man and homosexuality.

                            Book Description

COYOTE, set in the year 2003, follows Beffle, a playful middle-aged woman who manages the Ohlone Indian Casino in Carmel Valley, California, through a series of perils, deceptions, mysteries, and adventures taking place in Ohio at her 30th high school reunion, in Carmel Valley, in Las Vegas, and at Foxwoods, the Mashantucket Pequot Indians' casino in Connecticut. Throughout, Beffle, a pure Anglo, must pose as half Huron because to qualify for her job she had to tell her boss, Two Bears, she is partly Native American. COYOTE holds tightly to Beffle's point-of-view and moves along a story line close to the fault where modern Anglo life and traditional Indian life grind and fuse, in a milieu where the politics of crime, conflict, and deceit rule.

4 out of 5 stars Coyote: An Indian Casino Blues.......2001-08-02

Coyote is a kick in the pants. Richard Millerýs character Beffle, alias The Beer Fairy, changes personas and disguises like most of us change socks. In fact, many characters in this book change identities as Beffle and her erstwhile employer Two Bears roar through several American Indian casinos trying to escape a vast unnamed conspiracy that threatens to murder them.

From an Ohlone home base casino in Carmel Valley, Calif., Beffle and Two Bears plot the resurgence of American Indian culture through the pocketbooks of American consumer culture, primarily gambling, called here as in advertisements, "gaming." Miller not only places the reader on the Big Sur coast but also trails us to Las Vegas and Connecticut, while making a strong point that the motel rooms that Beffle frequents could be "anywhere USA."

Beffle and Two Bears travel to develop a scheme that will combine casinos around the country to buy back Indian land and establish a new Indian confederacy. The motel culture of the dominant culture wonýt do; perhaps the resurrection of the Indians with their respect for nature will save society. Or will it? Miller makes the reader acutely aware that casinos are sprouting in places where the deer once roamed.

Thereýs lots of background on what the dominant white culture has done to the Indians since stealing their land and Two Bears becomes an eloquent spokesman for the injustices as well as for the dreams of the tribes. His diatribes skewer our contemporary consumer culture as surely and accurately as an arrow strikes the bulls eye.

Yet thereýs something rotten in Denmark, as Shakespeare would say, when various people attempt to kill Beffle, and the pair, along with their trusty bodyguards, confront an unknown force that could be the CIA, the FBI or the Mafia. Who is trying to kill them and why? Or is anyone what they seem? And who are these sex-crazed twins and their cohorts who keep popping up to rescue Beffle at the oddest times?

Not to give away the plot, but no one is who they seem to be and the last pages of the book once again turn identities on their heads. Make an afternoon free to read this compelling story of ideals that bend back on themselves like pretzels and still hold out hope that something can change; people will triumph over their own doubts and greed and we can look to some of the beliefs of the American Indians to see us through our complex so-called civilization.

                            5 out of 5 stars Wildly Intense.......2001-05-13

COYOTE is a swirling vortex of thoughts and ideas. It is about our mortal and immortal selves. It is about the pyramids of power who do their damnedest to control us, and inadvertently, themselves. It is about innocence and deceit. Who are the bad guys anyways? Should we be judged by what we do or why we do it? COYOTE is both thoughtful and fun, a fast-paced fiction that raises many serious issues. I truly recommend it!

                            5 out of 5 stars It's a howl! Funny, serious, engaging........2001-02-23

Like its namesake in Native-American mythology, Miller's Coyote is playful and cunning. Its heroine, the resourceful and mysterious Beffle-who's an accomplished disguise artist-takes the reader on a coast-to-coast tour of Indian Casino gambling, that includes a stop in the nightmarish Mecca of gambling, Las Vegas. It also includes a bizarre high school reunion in the bowels of Ohio. Coyote is funny, suspensful, and serious as it looks at the history of relations between Native Americans and the Europeans who dropped by uninvited. Lots of good history wrapped in a witty, fast-paced adventure. I read it over a weekend and forwarded it to a friend who read it in a night. Terrific book.
