Book Description
The Goal/Objective Setting Effectiveness Profile looks at the task of goal setting. The instrument seeks to measure goal setting effectiveness in seven separate categories.
When individuals or organizations face significant situations or challenges, one of the first priorities is to understand the issues involved and to work out what needs to be done. In many cases, we do not need any formal assistance to help this process and can think our way through the steps that seem to be most appropriate. However, on occasion the issues or the problems may not be entirely clear and a structured approach can help considerably.
To meet this need, HRD Press has a suite of simple and easy-to-use but comprehensive diagnostic assessment profiles to help people understand their skills or the situations they face more effectively. HRD Press' diagnostic assessments fall into three categories:
Assessments that measure the individual are concerned with competency. These profiles provide participants with an inventory of their relative skills in subcategories within each topic.
Assessments that measure the team's or organization's performance as a whole (usually relative to the individual's perception of his or her own performance or level of competence).
Assessments that measure a particular task or situation in which the style that is adopted or utilized by the individual or by others is important to understand.
All of these assessments are described in detail on the subsequent pages. In most cases, assessments have comprehensive facilitator guides to explain the underlying structure of the profile and to help facilitators to provide structured feedback. Person and organization assessments also have detailed coaching guides which provide practical "how to" tips on each question in the relevant profile.

Book Description
Agricultural production is highly dependent on weather, climate and water availability and is adversely affected by the weather and climate-related disasters. Droughts and natural disasters such as floods can result in crop failures, food insecurity, famine, loss of property and life, mass migration and negative national economic growth. It may not be possible to prevent the occurrence of these natural disasters, but the resultant disastrous effects can be reduced considerably through proper planning and effective preparation. Vulnerability associated with the hazards of natural disasters can be controlled to some extent by accurate and timely prediction and by taking counter-measures to reduce their impacts on agriculture. This book based on an expert meeting held in Beijing, China should be of interest to all organizations involved in disasters reduction and mitigation of extreme events.

Customer Reviews:
Good information marred by conclusions & poor writing style.......2001-05-20
After read Eric J. Lerner's excellent book "The Big Bang Never Happened" I was inspired to buy this book. After reading it I wanted to give a higher rating for this book because the detailed information supplied by William C. Mitchell, exposing the myth of the big bang, is truly excellent. Mr. Mitchell has written a very usefull and helpful book but because he fails to completely separate himself from the usual "cosmology" nonsense the book ends on a very sour note with his own theories which don't look all that different from the Big Bang nonsense. The last couple of chapters of this book would better have been left out completely. In addition, Mr. Mitchell is a less than able writer. This book badly needed an editor.
I recommend this book as a usefull reference for those seeking to understand current cosmology discussion and as an expose of a lot of the nonsense about the Big Bang.
Amateur cosmologists view........2001-05-03
I just got this book yesterday, 1 May 2001, and have only read the chapter where Mitchell offers his NSST (near steady state theory). The last printing was 1995 which was before the latest Ia supernova observations, in 1998, which pretty well refute his NSST ideas. If it weren't for this I would have rated the book five stars without even reading it because I am so familiar with the "priesthood". I thought it was great that Amazon has an in depth personal biography of Mitchell which was absent from the book. He sounds like a hell of a guy and I would love to meet him. I am going to try to contact him. If anyone knows his email address I hope they will send it to me or give him mine which is: dwhig265@aol.com I think it would be a good idea for all authors to show their email address like comic strip authors do. You never know when someone might send you a good idea. I thought the only previous reviewer to myself did a good job. Sincerely, Dwain W. Higginbotham
A definitive exposure of incomplete scientific "knowing".......2001-02-01
I am woefully unqualified to review this book, but I feel that I did get enough out of it to discuss it somewhat intelligently. I have taken the time over the last few years to read science books that challenge the various high priesthoods of science, from the men who say they know that Darwinian evolution explains the development all life, to the men who claim they can tell us within less than a second when and how the universe came about. These hallowed guardians of the gates of truth tell us w/o the slightest doubt that in addition to what they know about what happened in the past, that therefore they can assure us that it was all a big accident and has no meaning for us individually or collectively.
But maybe they (and their scientism) don't know as much as they claim, as Mr. Mitchell's interesting and *very* challenging book documents in astonishing detail!
When you study the Big Bang theory (BBT), you see that what cosmologists have done is use theories, yes only theories, of particle physics to prove the BBT, which is saying that what goes on at the sub-atomic level also explains "the whole shebang." If the theories don't match the data, the cosmologists invent some new theory, like inflation, which then somehow exactly fits the data that caused the inconsistency, and thus "proves" once again that the theory is correct. This cycle has repeated itself many times with the BBT.
Because of the connection between BBT and particle physics, Mr. Mitchell includes a rather amazing discussion of this topic as one of the first chapters, along with relativity and quantum physics. I had no idea that there were so many types and varieties of particles determined by physicists!
Next, he presents a very good discussion of the history of the BBT, and immediately starts his relentless critique of many, many serious problems with BBT. For example, the whole idea that there was a singularity that exploded into the universe itself violates many laws of physics. Then he discusses the smoothness issue, which is that the universe is full of irregularities that violate the BBT.
In the next chapter Mitchell tells us that there is not one version of BBT, but there are actually three: the flat, open, and closed BBT universes. Throughout the remainder of the book the author shows the problems and contradictions with each version of BBT, in a discussion that often left me confused, but at least I understood his logic! Not surprising, after all, we are dealing with the whole universe!
I will mention only four more of a plethora of issues that are discussed in the remainder of the book.
1) BB cosmologists have determined that 90-99% of the physical universe must be dark matter for the BBT to be correct, but, believe it or not, they have not as far as I know definitely identified any! On a similar note, I might also mention that I am still seeing articles in "Science News" where cosmologists are saying that they think they've found an "event horizon," which would prove the existence of black holes. And I thought they had found proof of black holes many years ago!
2) Microwave background radiation (MBR) is usually brought out as the most definitive "proof" of BBT. Mr. Mitchell thoroughly shows the contradictions with MBR and all three BBT universes, and also notes that MBR might be consistent with other cosmological theories.
3) Matter vs. anti-matter - The BBT does not explain why there is so much more matter than anti-matter, when according to current theories of physics they should be equal.
4) "The Great Wall" of supercluster galaxies, which could be up to 100 billion years old, thoroughly discredits all of the dates given by BBT theorists, that the universe is 8 to 15 billion years old.
Mr. Mitchell includes a very humorous chapter on the priests of cosmology, where the messiah is Einstein, the head priest is Stephen Hawking, and he provides lists of university "churches" where the interlocking careers of BBT "bishops" assure that all is well and the BBT is the correct "Genesis" of creation. Any scientist who dares to challenge BBT dogma will be excommunicated.
Finally, because an alternative cosmology is needed to replace the one he discredits, Mr. Mitchell presents what he calls the "near" Steady State Theory, or NSST, which is a resurrection of the discredited SST along with additions to make it more suitable to what has been observed so far.
I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in BBT, even if he/she can only understand this book cursorily, like me!

FINALLY, A BOOK ABOUT THE NATIONAL PARKS OF THE PHILIPPINES.......2007-04-29
I recently bought this book (april 28 2007) and im happy to get this since i never had any idea where and what philippine national parks look like and where are they exactly located...its full of information and photography with some of the unusual flora and fauna found endemic in the country....while the book is chock full of informations and photographs, it still is incomplete as there are some more national parks not shown...a volume 2 would have been made.wish books like these are being published more for awareness of how rich and diverse the country has to offer
Not What I Expected!.......2003-12-30
I am an avid cooker of Indian food and have several great Indian cookbooks. This one was a major disappointment and a waste of money. Tried a number of recipes in order to make a proper assessment, did not like any of them.
Recipes are simple and uncomplicated. However, flavours were unappealing and unexciting and did not vary much from one recipe to the next. After making about 6 recipes I gave up.
Environmental masterpiece.......2002-02-27
This book is the first and only one that focuses on the environmental aspects of the Philippines in a convincing and brilliant way. I hope to meet Mr. Nigel Hicks one day in person.

Any level kayaker will learn something here.......2007-08-31
This is a great book! I read it as a beginner, and will hold onto it as a reference. Anyone who kayaks should know the info in this book. Written with enthusiasm for the sport, it is not at all a dry read.(Pun intended.)
One of the best books on Sea Kayaking that I have ever read!.......2007-03-17
I am not an avid reader, and I usually lose interest in a book and place it on the shelf mid way through if the author doesn't keep my interest. John Dowd had not only captivated my interest, but made it hard for me to put it down. Some of the best and informative information about Sea Kayaking that I have read yet. It should be a "Must Read" for any person involved in the sport of Sea Kayaking, beginner to novice. 5 Star Rating above all others!!!
Great book.......2006-08-08
Dowd has a way of sounding like your dad and the tone of the book is very relaxed and easy to follow. It claims to be pitched at intermediate kayakers starting out on expeditions yet basic skills like bracing, sculling and rolling are included. Even the most basic things that are left out are assumed by their absence and that keeps the book from being patronising in an overly wordy `beginners guide' type way.
He gives a very informative overview of the sport and its locations from polar kayaking to the tropics. He also gives a reassuring overview of a sea kayak's `sea worthiness' (dependent on the paddler) explaining some hurricane force winds he has personally endured in a kayak. He also discusses at length the issue of kayaking alone and concludes that one can kayak safely alone, in fact he even suggests kayaking in numbers can give a false sense of security.
Dowd discusses buying a kayak and refreshingly advises `keep in my mind your original image - how you saw yourself with your boat' which I found to be excellent advice.
This book is a very good introduction to sea kayaking and an interesting read. It is also a bible-like source of information. As Paul Theroux said on the jacket "quiet simply the best book available on this wonderful sport"
Essential kayaking book.......2001-01-25
This is a fabulous book on sea kayaking. I loved reading it because of the very useful information and mix of serious and humorous writing styles. A must read - and you'll want to read it several times to soak up all the great information. Highly recommended for any kayaker. His exploits are impressive and inspiring.
The Bible of the Sport.......2000-08-19
There are a number of good books on kayak technique, but Dowd's is the bible of the sport, and with good reason. He's been kayaking for over thirty years, and he's done some of the most difficult voyages in kayaking history. He's specific in his recommendations, but open minded, too. He favors feathered paddles, but he understands the advantage of unfeatehred paddles, and allows how they may be superior in many conditions.
Dowd's advice isn't based on theory, but on experience. He's not afraid to admit his own mistakes, and in this latest edition, he desribes how he's changed a lot of his opinons on the rescue techniques he's taught in the past. He's realistic, and realizes that not every kayaker is going to develop a bombproof roll or be able to perform the Borze's paddlefloat rescue; he endorses alternate techniques like he (somewhat contentious) Sea Wings.
What it boils down to is this: Whatever other books you may own, whatever lessons you may have taken, whatever your level of experience- you need this book.

Same author helped me pass the F.E. (EIT), and hopefully this one will help when it's time for the P.E.
The excellent book.......2007-01-03
This book makes my way for passing my PE exam. It is really good to have it for PE.
Ok for review.......2006-11-10
I definately learned something from doing some of these problems, but I feel like it is only halfway converted from the old style of testing. Yes, they converted to the multiple choice answers, but still each problem built on the last. So, in that respect it was annoying. I found myself trying to look at the previous answer without seeing the answer for the next problem. If you want some good problems that are exactly like the exam, get the NCEES book. That is the best practice.

Book Description
arry Potter may have piqued kids' interest in boarding schools, but this exuberant coming-of-age story is just the book to provide all of the juicy details about what a real boarding school is like. Blow Out the Moon follows a feisty young heroine in the 1950s on an ocean liner from the United States to London, and then to a boarding school in the English countryside. In her struggle to become a proper lady-whether learning to ride horses or learning to eat the 'right' way-she finds herself maturing from a reckless little girlinto a young lady, without sacrificing her vivacity. First-time novelist Libby Koponen writes with a humorous, girlish honesty, and includes actual letters, documents, and photographs from her own youth. Fans of Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, and even the contemporary Ramona series will love and treasure this book for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
This book is soooo sweet!!.......2007-08-16
I love this book. It reminds me of being a kid again. I forgot what it was like until I read this book. I can't wait for Ms. Koponen to write another book. I'm going to gobble it up!!!!
Makes you laugh.......2007-05-17
"Libby's joyous times at Sibton Park make you laugh out loud."
--A 6th grader writing in Just Books.
"Koponen's tightly written prose is laced with humor." --Seattle Times
Yes, I'm the author -- but this is what OTHER people said. I get emails from kids all the time saying they loved the book; maybe you will too.
A nice book.......2006-07-07
Libby Koponen's novel Blow Out the Moon is based on her own experiences growing up. She includes photographs and drawings throughout the book.
At dinner one evening, Libby's father informs her and her siblings that they would be traveling by ship to live in England for six months. Her father would travel ahead and meet them when the ship docked.
Libby would be leaving her home, her school and her best friend Henry, but it was a short-term adventure. That's what she thought. The six months turned into eighteen months and Libby wasn't happy about the extension.
Everything in England was different. She wasn't happy until she left for boarding school. There she meets new and interesting people, learns how to do things the way the English do them and even learns to ride a horse. But she refuses to sing "God Save the Queen."
During Libby's adventure she leaves childhood and becomes a young lady. And just before she leaves England, she decides it wouldn't hurt to sing "God Save the Queen," just one time.
Koponen's book is interesting but it's not particularly exciting. It reminds me of a story one would write for a family member, not the world.
Armchair Interviews says: If you are interested in learning about the way other people live, you might be interested in this story. If you're looking for an exciting novel with a plot, you might not choose this book.
An Engaging Adventure.......2006-02-02
This is the story of Libby, a young American girl who lives in England for a year and a half. She is naturally independent and spunky, yet learns that being polite means caring about others' feelings. Overall, this book is wonderful; it's engaging in a way that too few books are. Schoolgirl Libby is a joy to watch as she travels to England and attends boarding school, encountering difficulties and misadventures along the way. Unfortunately, author Libby Koponen's writing is a tad overly simplified, and she fails to fully transform her voice into that of a true child. Koponen instead comes across as an adult trying to write like a child. Still, that's my sole complaint about this great book.
An Excellent Book for Young Readers.......2005-12-07
My 10-year-old daughter and I read this book when it first came out, and we both loved it. It's not the usual fare you find for young readers these days: there are no wizards, dragons, or talking animals, just a spunky young american girl who grows up a lot while spending a year at an English boarding school in the 1950's.
Libby is a great character for kids to relate to--she's not perfect, and though her high spirits get her into trouble sometimes, her heart is in the right place. And she's willing to change to become a more thoughtful and considerate person. There are few contemporary books for kids that deal with the subject of manners and etiquette--and that's not all this book is about--and it's refreshing to see it dealt with in a playful, yet enlightening way.
Kids will also be capitivated by the world of Sibton Park School, with the horseback riding, dormitory life, and all of its English ways. Christmas is coming, and we're going to give BLOW OUT THE MOON to all of my daughter's friends. Thank you, Libby, for such a wonderful book. We look forward to your next book!
