Book Description
This clear, step-by-step best-selling introduction to the economics of health and health care thoroughly develops and explains economic ideas and models to reflect the full spectrum of the most current health economics literature. This book uses core economic themes as basic as supply and demand, as venerable as technology or labor issues, and as modern as the economics of information. Chapter topics include health care, health capital, information, health insurance markets, managed care, nonprofit firms, hospitals, physicians and labor, the pharmaceutical industry, government intervention and regulation, and epidemiology and economics. Useful as a reference work for health service researchers, government specialists, and physicians and others in the health care field.
Customer Reviews:
A pretty good book for what it is..........2006-03-06
As with all economics textbooks and the subject of economics in general, this book is a bit dry. That said however, it's quite thorough in its coverage of how consumers, producers, and insurers make decisions about health and health care. It gives explanations that are rather simple to understand and goes in depth as far as would be considered normal for a 300 level elective course. I should probably note that my instructor is one of the book's authors, so take my review how you will.

Great book with plenty of thought provoking information........2007-09-20
This is the an excellent book to provides the reader with a great overview relevant issues in HealthCare. The format is extremely user-friendly, and the content is superior. This book was required for my Health Policy class, and it will be a keeper. Regardless of your opinions on the status of healthcare in this country, you can find useful information to defend any perspective, as well as information that will be eye-opening, possibly changing your perspective on certain issues. I thought I knew it all until I read this book. It's one of the best I've ever read. By the way, did I say how READABLE it is. As a busy physician, I hardly have time to read anything; but this was well-worth it!
thumbs up on economic explanation.......2005-09-30
This text makes the controversies regarding the state of health care systems clear. The explanations on Medicaid and Medicare make sense. The history of Canada's national health care, pitfalls, advantages, etc. give one a place to start when designing a new system of our own. Alyce Huntsinger RN NNP

Book Description
Challenging work experiences are the richest source of learning for today's managers. Yet lessons embedded in these experiences are not always obvious. This comprehensive book describes a critical yet under-researched element of how managers learn from these experiences: reflection. Today's workplace demands continual learning, which in turn requires reflection. While this book supports the prevailing view that reflection is central to experiential learning, it challenges the traditional views that it is the same as contemplation, that it is incompatible with management, and that it is time-consuming and unnatural for managers. Original quantitative and qualitative research reported in this book indicates that two different yet complementary modes of managerial reflection exist: active and proactive. Active reflection is something that managers naturally engage in during challenging job experiences, whereas managers must be prompted to engage in proactive reflection. Both modes involve processes of intentional inquiry. Different forces are necessary to stimulate each type of reflection. Based on these findings, the claim is made that the potential to learn from experience is greatest when managers intentionally engage in both modes. Accordingly, a holistic model that integrates active and proactive reflection is presented. This model has important implications for theorists and researchers of managerial learning by identifying previously unreported aspects of reflection. It is also relevant to practitioners and companies who desire to enhance what their managers learn from their workplace experience.

Book Description
The enormous advances in observational techniques over the last two decades has produced a wealth of data and unexpected discoveries which have helped to reshape astrophysics as a field with well-formulated theories and sophisticated numerical calculations. In nuclear particle physics, plasma physics, as well as in general relativity, the Universe has become a laboratory for cutting-edge research. The courses collected in the book are intended to provide students with this insight, giving a general background on each topic such as cosmic rays, nuclear and neutrino astrophysics, solar physics and strong fields, as well as a presentation of the current research and open problems. The book is aimed at graduate students in physics and astrophysics, as well as researchers, bridging a gap between the specialized reviews and the comprehensive books.

Book Description
What is it really like living in the shadow of the NFL? Contending with marital issues in a media spotlight? Raising kids whose father is idolized for his bone-crushing work on national TV? Trying to pursue friendships and career while constantly on the move? Reporting from the home field, Shannon O’Toole offers an intimate perspective on the culture of the NFL based on her interviews with dozens of wives and girlfriends of NFL players and coaches.
Bringing to bear a background in sociology and a firsthand understanding of being married to the NFL, O'Toole is uniquely qualified to report from behind pro football’s doors. Part insider tell-all, part sociological study, her book is packed with candid on-the-spot accounts of NFL life, providing a rare glimpse into the often hidden world behind the game.
Women—already 43 percent of the NFL’s fan base—make up the sport’s fastest growing group of fans: this book is certain to appeal to them and to anyone who wonders about the hidden realities of America’s favorite game.
Customer Reviews:
"Wedded" is really good!.......2006-06-04
Shannon O'Toole, a first-time author, writes smoothly and beautifully in this fast-paced, informative, and surprisingly juicy book. As an NFL insider, Shannon has definitely done her homework bringing to the forefront an aspect that is rarely seen in public - the other half of the men in the NFL - their wives, fiancées and girlfriends of the many players and coaches. We so often hear about the male players in the NFL so it is very refreshing to learn how these women are indeed a factor in the success of their husband's careers. "Wedded To The Game" is an eye opener for all who are interested in the dynamics of relationships that stand the test of time, stress, children and insecurities galore. Who would ever guess that these marriages last and the reasons are similar to one another? No other book will give you this insight, I highly recommend it!
O'Toole is candid about her own life leading up to and in the NFL and interviews with notables as Jackie Rice, Kathy Waufle, Pat Kennan, Kim Singletary, Kim Ruddy, Kori Shaw and many others are candid as well. I can guarantee that you will enjoy it.
A Poignant and Gripping Sketch.......2006-04-25
First time author and wife of John Morton, an ex- NFL player and now coach,
Shannon O'Toole candidly exposes her thoughts and perceptions of what it is like
to be married to a professional football player or coach.
O'Toole, who holds a master's degree in sociology, bases much of her assessments
on a questionnaire that she anonymously sent to one hundred and fifty wives of
NFL players and coaches. She received seventy five responses and of these she
chose thirty to interview more in depth. These women range in age from their
early twenties to their mid-sixties and come from diverse educational and ethnic
backgrounds. Wedded to the Game: The Real Lives Of NFL Women is a broad overview
as well as a recording and synthesis of O'Toole's findings that make for some
very interesting and sometimes surprising data.
Divided into ten chapters, O'Toole addresses such concerns as the insecurity of
being a wife of a player or coach whose career can be over in a flash, or the
endless number of relocations that most of the players have to endure during
their career. A full chapter is devoted to domestic violence and the
ineffectiveness of the NFL in dealing with the problem. Included in this same
chapter is the temptation to indulge in extra-marital affairs and a questioning
if it is more prevalent than in any other profession or occupation. The
misconception that everyone employed by the sport is ultra-rich is thoroughly
examined with some surprising revelations. Much ink is given to exploring family
relationships, particularly where couples live a schizophrenic existence in that
once the season begins some wives hardly see their spouses. As the author
states, "some women, particularly coaches' wives, never get over the
difficulties and loneliness the football season brings, and they become
increasingly bitter and hostile." Moreover, wives have to take on the role of
supermoms or single moms, wherein she becomes one hundred percent responsible
for their physical, educational, and emotional well-being of the couple's
children.
Readers also receive a realistic expose of how difficult it is to break into the
NFL and the daily routines of NFL players and coaches that are not as glamorous
as the media would like to have us believe.
Another misconception that the author candidly talks about is the matter of free
tickets to the games. As mentioned, players and coaches for the most part are
required to pay for their tickets, and the tickets that they do receive for
their immediate family are not exactly in the best sections of the stadium.
O'Toole is not afraid to touch on some very sensitive issues and what emerges is
a poignant and gripping sketch of a better understanding of the complex lives of
spouses of NFL players and coaches that are very often ignored by the media.

NFL Fan.......2006-04-09
The insiders view of living with the NFL. Great commentary on women adjusting to life as a partner in the NFL. Surprising revelations and expectations. A good read.
Great Insight.......2006-03-27
The author's real life experience and those in the book, give an interesting look into public perceptions and realities of NFL life.
Book Description
The popularity of this book rests on its comprehensive analysis of behavior strategies for the child on the spectrum and the use of over 120 case examples that illustrate those strategies' applications. The authors also point out areas of caution which parents and teachers need to know. Subjects include everything from increasing desired behaviors and communication to crisis and stress management.
Customer Reviews:
very useful.......2007-02-11
I am a Behavior Specialist and I work with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This is a great reference for treatment planning and understanding behaviors.
Excellent resource book.......2006-11-10
Book offers wonderful ideas and strategies!!! A must for special education teachers!
If behavior is an issue, this book is for you!.......2006-07-06
This book was so helpful in understanding behavioral issues better. As a teacher at a main stream elementary school, I encounter children with milder forms of Autism on a daily basis. I just have thought in the past that their disobedience was blatant. However, through the reading of this book, I have learned that bad behavior many times is a result of their communication and sensory issues. Something as simple as communicating to them in a way that is simple for them to understand and not speaking to them figuratively or giving many commands at once, can avoid an episode of bad behavior. If I can make sure that whatever activities we do are mapped out for the day and that "surprises" on a regular basis do not occur, then we can avoid unnecessary trauma or stress. There are so many useful tips offered that have been tried and proven. If you or someone you know, work with an individual with autism, you definitely need to read this book. It truly is an indispensable source.
A Treasure Chest of Behavioal Strategies for Individuals with Autism.......2006-07-05
This is a good book. More for people who are jsut starting out in the field. Gives great explainations and is easy to read and follow.
Great for any teacher.......2006-06-30
I'm glad that I got my hands on this book! It is very comprehensive. The chapters on "Impact of Autism Characteristics" and "Increasing Desired Behaviors", were especially helpful. It really expounded on alot of much needed information that I need as a teacher. I have a boy in my class that has autism disorder and this book really gave me tools that I need to better meet his needs and be a better teacher. I can deal more effectively with him now in the problems that we sometimes encounter in the classroom. Thank you!

like the way Lila treated Kate.
he didn't liet Kate be she made her all girlish and stylish
something i obviously don't like girly things
so in all I would not like that to happen to my mother or father in real life so in all I don't really like this book
it is only OK
Happy Mothers Day.......2001-07-31
Lila has never had a mother on mothers day and when a mother-daughter fashion show is offered around town she has GOT to be in it.So she hires someone to pretend that she is her mother. It is a book with a sad touch as Lila deals with the pain of needing a mother.
Happy Mother's Day, Lila.......2000-01-06
this book is excellent! when a mother daughter fashion is coming to the mall, and lila's friends and their mothers are all entering, what does snobby insecure lila fowler do? this story unravels with lila making numerous plans to find a mother but nosy jessica wakefield uncovers each one. This is one of the more realistic sweet valley novels, it shows that rch debutante LiLa doesnt have everything she wants, and that there are some things in life that money cant buy life family. Hope you enjoy the book like I did and Happy Reading!
