Book Description
David M. Kreps has developed a text in microeconomics that is both challenging and "user-friendly." The work is designed for the first-year graduate microeconomic theory course and is accessible to advanced undergraduates as well. Placing unusual emphasis on modern noncooperative game theory, it provides the student and instructor with a unified treatment of modern microeconomic theory--one that stresses the behavior of the individual actor (consumer or firm) in various institutional settings. The author has taken special pains to explore the fundamental assumptions of the theories and techniques studied, pointing out both strengths and weaknesses.
The book begins with an exposition of the standard models of choice and the market, with extra attention paid to choice under uncertainty and dynamic choice. General and partial equilibrium approaches are blended, so that the student sees these approaches as points along a continuum. The work then turns to more modern developments. Readers are introduced to noncooperative game theory and shown how to model games and determine solution concepts. Models with incomplete information, the folk theorem and reputation, and bilateral bargaining are covered in depth. Information economics is explored next. A closing discussion concerns firms as organizations and gives readers a taste of transaction-cost economics.
Customer Reviews:
he always says that it is leaved to you.......2007-07-19
at the important spot. kreps says that it is left to you. i dislike this author.
I need other books that explain in some more detail. the chapeter on choice under uncertainty need complementary book.
Apart from the Rest..........2003-03-07
A Course in Microeconomic Theory is one of the best mainstream price theory texts available. There are mistakes in this book. Kreps takes Walrasian equilibrium a bit too seriously. He admits to the unreal nature of important parts of Walrasian equilibrium. He admits that it does not tell us how markets work, and that it omits important institutions, like money. Kreps refers to the Walrasian Auctioneer as fairly unrealistic (p 195), when the adjective utterly might be more fitting.
He also takes 'benevolent social Dictators' too seriously. The next edition of this book would be much superior if the author were to pay more attention to Public Choice theory.
However, he does explain economic concepts fairly well. This is not just an exercise in mathematical games. Much of the math that he uses is game theoretic. Kreps included an entire section on game theory. He uses more math than one really needs to understand economics, but the math that he does use is the most useful there is.
There is an entire section on information economics. It goes farther than most other price theory texts in discussing this important topic, though not far enough.
This books biggest strength is its' section on transaction costs theories of the firm. Here the author remedies much of the unreal character of price theory. This alone sets it apart from other mainstream texts.
This book is the best at teaching mainstream economics. Kreps is modest in his claims about the realism regarding standard models of competitive equilibrium, and explains concepts and techniques well. He also focuses on the many of the right concepts and techniques. The main defect in this book is that it does not go far enough in adding realism to price theory.
Save your money.......2000-03-18
You are better off spending your money elsewhere. This book is not well written, and gives cursory treatment to many important areas of Micro theory. Compared to the other dominant Micro texts, it falls way short.
Excellent first-year graduate text on choice and game theory.......1999-06-07
The quality of the text is very uneven. The foundations of choice theory and game theory are presented with great clarity and insight. This would have been enough to get five stars. Alas, the author yielded to the temptation of trying to make it a comprehensive first-year microeconomics text (instead of a complement to, say, Varian's Microeconomic Analysis). The parts on traditional topics like cost and demand functions, partial and general equilibrium have all the flavor of an after-thought addendum. That lost it one of my stars.
Book Description
Microeconomic Theory is based on lecture notes for a graduate course in microeconomic theory. It covers a broad range of topics, and to some extent the lecture structure is retained in the style of the book. The author provides a clear account of the main ideas in each area concisely, and in some depth of detail. The presentation is at an advanced level and provides succinct coverage of the material in a self contained discussion. Chapters are organized and written independently making it possible to read any chapter without having read earlier material. Each chaper is written on the presumption that the reader has some familiarity with the topics or issues under discussion but would value further discussion, or a second point of view . While much of the material is mainstream, a substantial portion is not available in existing textbooks. The book covers a range of topics appearing in advanced courses in microeconomic theory. Coverage includes such topics as decision theory, strategic and extensive form games, auctions, bargaining, information models, principal- agent problems, signalling and screening games, cooperative games and models of learning.

Book Description
As the United States transformed itself from an agricultural to an industrial nation, thousands of young people left farm homes for life in the big city. But even by 1920 the nation's heartland remained predominantly rural and most children in the region were still raised on farms. Pamela Riney-Kehrberg retells their stories, offering glimpses-both nostalgic and realistic-of a bygone era.
As Riney-Kehrberg shows, the experiences of most farm children continued to reflect the traditions of family life and labor, albeit in an age when middle-class urban Americans were beginning to redefine childhood as a time reserved for education and play. She draws upon a wealth of primary sources-not only memoirs and diaries but also census data-to create a vivid portrait of midwestern farm childhood from the early post-Civil War period through the Progressive Era growing pains of industrialization. Those personal accounts resurrect the essential experience of children's work, play, education, family relations, and coming of age from their own perspectives.
Steering a middle path between the myth of wholesome farm life and the reality of work that was often extremely dangerous, Riney-Kehrberg shows both the best and the worst that a rural upbringing had to offer midwestern youth a time before mechanization forever changed the rural scene and radio broke the spell of isolation. Down on the farm, truancy was not uncommon and chores were shared across genders. Yet farm children managed to indulge in inventive play-much of it homemade-to supplement store-bought toys and to get through the long spells between circuses.
Filled with insightful personal stories and graced with dozens of highly evocative period photos, Childhood on the Farm is the only general history of midwestern farm children to use narratives written by the children themselves, giving a fresh voice to these forgotten years. Theirs was a way of life that was disappearing even as they lived it, and this book offers new insight into why, even if many rural youngsters became urban and suburban adults, they always maintained some affection for the farm.

Book Description
Improper muscle preparation prior to exercise is the most common cause of acute pain, strain, and permanent damage. Many of these injuries are preventable with proper lower extremity stretching. This book addresses the need for warm-up exercises, analyzes the stretching process, and illustrates anatomy and basic biomechanics. Myths associated with stretching are dispelled. For example, many people believe that stretches and warm-up exercises are the same, when in fact, warm-up exercises should be a preparation for stretches. Applying the strategies outlined in this book will help keep an athlete healthy, build strength and power, and, most important prevent injury.
Customer Reviews:
The Medical Explanation for Stretching.......2007-04-10
Learn the anatomy behind your muscles and why stretching is important. This book also includes several techniques for safe stretches.
Good Information But of Limited Value If Used Alone.......2007-02-11
If you read my other reviews, you'll know that I'm on a quest to determine the best, most effective, and safe methods to increase physical flexibility. Here's my take on Stark's book.
1. Stark does a great job of outlining human physical anatomy involved in lower body stretching. He does it with simple diagrams and plain language accessible to anyone.
Second, Stark outlines harmful stretches and techniques and dispels common myths concerning stretching. The price of the book is well worth paying for this information alone.
2. Most important Stark medically explains why the muscle can only be lengthened when it is relaxed and you cannot force a muscle to relax and lengthen. Hence the incredible potential stretching benefits of practices like Yoga.
3. The problem with Stark's book is this is as far as he takes it. He doesn't really make the leap of what is required to increase flexibility. He offers 6 simple stretches that are safe to perform, but using his method and stretches, it would take you over 100 years to increase your flexibility.
4. So, really this book reinforces the writings of people like Pavel: the muscle must be relaxed to stretch. I think the targeted audience of this book may be people who experience daily aches and pains from old athletic injuries and need simple, gentle stretching exercises.
Great as an addition to a fitness library but definitely not a stand-alone book.
The author sticks to his discipline.......2006-03-26
Stark's book is criticized here several times, for not addressing mid and upper body muscle groups. If I want advice on what to do about atherosclerosis, I will go see a cardiac specialist. And if I want expert advice for feet and closely associated physiology I will read Stark, because his methods and communication skills are among the best. Unlike some 'experts', Stark does not arrogantly venture beyond the scope of his discipline.
Stark is a podiatrist. Maybe some of the complainants should have checked out his credentials before purchase.
limited information.......2003-04-14
If you're looking for a lot of background on muscle physiology or a very specific method of stretching this book might interest you, but if you're looking for a good selection of stretches, you should be aware that you only get 6 stretches here. I found the title a little misleading, since "every sport" would seem to include tennis, baseball and swimming, but this book only addresses lower body flexibility. If you want to stretch your arms, back, shoulders, etc, you're out of luck here.
I also found it annoying that the author promotes his personal stretching theory while using outdated studies to discredit other methods. For example, he uses studies from the early 70s to prove that PNF stretching is bad for you when the PNF stretching theories in use right now were not even developed at the time of the studies. Seemed like he was selectively choosing among the available research to prove his point while disregarding accepted theories that don't bolster his own method.
An Outstanding Book!.......2002-05-16
Finally somebody who got it Right!
I won't waste any space in telling you how important, and undervalued, stretching is for any sport. This is a fantastic anatomical approach to stretch. The book should be read, and understood by anyone who wants to be physically fit.
The coverege of the book is spotty in some places, especially when dealing with the torse and upper body. But, to me, that does not detract from the overall exceptional quality of this book.

Customer Reviews:
A suggestion.......2006-09-09
--- I'm giving this product 4 stars based on other reviews, but what I really want to make is a suggestion and not a review. They should have one of this for English language. There are some people (like myself, for example) that doesn't live in the United states but still buy stuff over the internet. I live in Panama and the first language here is Spanish, I would very much like to get the English version of this product so my child learns basics and, overall, pronunciation in English that's so difficult for people who speak Spanish. ---
Great information........2006-03-15
The accompanying booklet helped me understand how my daughter is perceiving her audio-world.
The CD is an emersion into the songs and poems of Italy and a wonderful way to reinforce our heritage.
Nothing better exists.......2006-02-22
I love these CDs by Dr. Levy and Randomhouse. I own all 3. In fact, I have been lobbying to get them to make more in other languages than Spanish, French and Italian. Maybe if you're from Italy and speak/read Italian so that you can find resources from Italy diretly and know people who can send them to you from Italy, that this wouldn't be your first choice product. But I have spent weeks upon weeks looking for materials for my now 19-month old to learn foreign languages, and there is nothing better out there available in the United States than the Baby's First Step series. I hope enough people contact Living Language at Randomhouse to encourage them to make more. [customerservice@randomhouse.com; livinglanguage@randomhouse.com]
Great way to introduce Italian to a newborn!.......2006-02-07
I am an Italian speaker and have been looking for creative ways to teach our newborn (now 2 months old) Italian. This CD has been a great resource - it is fun for both child and parent, has a great mix of songs and tongue twisters, and the accompanying booklet has been helpful for my husband (who is learning Italian) to follow along. I highly recommend it. It is a staple at our home particulary during dinnertime to keep baby content (she coos to the CD now!) while learning basic phonic skills that will help her in the future to speak Italian.
do not buy it.......2006-01-31
I am Italian and I thought about buying it, since I do not have much babies' Italian music here in Los Angeles and I am not planning any trip soon. Now, the CD has such an old fashon music with vocabulary that we do not use anymore. Plus, few songs are read instead of sung (I think not to pay copyrights or something like that) which makes it absolutely bad. Some songs are not even sung by Italians and the pronunciation of words is not correct!!! I played only once and then put it in a drawer and I'll never pick it up again. Thank God my mom is coming and she is going to bring REAL italian music for children. THe one I want my baby to listen to and sing along with.

Book Description
Everyone is so tired of Poppy Brown's stories that Poppy has begun talking to garden statues. When her favorite statue, Belladonna, is struck by lightning and comes to life, Poppy must find a human who will listen! Poppy's classmate Emma is skeptical, but curious enough to help Poppy investigate the living statues, which are disappearing from gardens all over town and assembling somewhere on the moors. What seemed fascinating at first soon becomes terrifying as the two girls are captured by the creatures they had observed - creatures who are at once beautiful, spiteful, and as unfeeling as the stone they're made of.
Customer Reviews:
The Stonewalkers.......2006-07-01
ISBN 440403006 - First off, for those parents who freak out about every word their kid reads, you should know that hell and damn each make several appearances throughout the book, almost always out of the mouth of a kid. If, however, you can overlook that, not a bad book, just not a great one - and nowhere NEAR as good as The Sylvia Game by the same author.
Poppy Brown, shuffled from home to foster home and 'round again, lies. All the time. And for no reason! The end result is that no one believes her. Of course, NOW she's got a great, true story to tell, and if she tells it to anyone, it's going to sound like the biggest lie she's ever told. Living in Mr Hunt's house, where her mother works, Poppy has spent a lot of time in the garden. In one corner of the garden, Belladonna stands silent while Poppy tells her everything. This is a perfect arrangement for Poppy, because Belladonna doesn't talk back, think Poppy's a liar or ignore her like her classmates do during school.
One afternoon, Poppy finds herself talking to Belladonna as a storm begins to roll in. A bracelet she's made of chain she found becomes a gift to Belladonna and, somehow, between the lightning and the bracelet Belladonna comes to life. Poppy eventually tells her story to Emma, the fat unpopular girl from school and the two spend the bulk of the book chasing after Belladonna and then running away from her and other statues she's brought to life with the chain.
There's some lessons in the book, about friendship and how you should treat people, about lying and the price you pay in trust, and about mothers and daughters and their relationships. Overall, the book's average, I wouldn't read it twice but it might get the budding Stephen King crowd interested.
Hichcockian fare for the under 14 set.......2005-11-11
Vivien Alcock is best described as the Alfred Hitchcock of children's literature. Don't laugh, cause I mean it sincerely. She is a master of suspense in juvenile fiction. Her books, when they are realistic, are all about crazy mind games and deceit (as in her "Vertigo"-like, "The Sylvia Game"). Alfred Hitchcock was often ready to dip in surrealistic horror as in "The Birds", and to that extent, "The Stonewalkers" is Alcock's undeniable equivalent. Hitchcock made us nervous of the avian menace perched just above our heads. Alcock makes us nervous of our stone neighbors hanging out on our streets, sidewalks, and walkways. The statues can no longer be trusted.
Poppy Brown is a filthy liar. A disgusting, repugnant, truly overwhelming little fib-meister. There are various reasons for this. Some people think her lies spawn from the fact that her father died when she was young and her mother has always been repeatedly institutionalized (possibly to avoid the responsibility of Poppy). The kid has been shuffled from one foster mother to another like a piece of beloved (but not particularly enjoyed) old luggage. Now her mother is back in her life again and the two are living on a large English estate. Her only friend is a stone statue of a young woman whom Poppy has named Belladonna. When the girl fastens a mysterious chain she found in the estate's basement around Belladonna's ankle, she's shocked to discover that with a little lightening, her stone friend is brought suddenly to life. Unfortunately, this experiment turns distinctly Frankenstein-like and Poppy enlists the help of pudgy neighbor Emma to discover where her statue has gone and what it might do. When statues from churches and graveyards start walking off on their own accord, Poppy and her friend find themselves in terrible danger at the hands of these beautiful and horrible monsters.
When a read a blurb of a review of this book from Horn Book Magazine that called it, "An absorbing tale of terror", I didn't really believe it. Sure, I was a little disturbed by the image presented on its cover. If you purchase the 1998 reissue of "The Stonewalkers" then you are privy to a picture drawn by the excellent children's illustrator Barbara McClintok. Something about the picture really disturbed me. There was a hint of cruelty to it that I couldn't exactly place. Something to do with the faces of the child characters perhaps. I didn't give it much thought until I started reading the book itself. When things go bad for the kids in this story, they go real bad real fast. One child goes around being forced to move around on a broken ankle for long periods of time. Others have their hair ripped from their heads and wish that they could wake up from the nightmare that is their life. I'm a pretty liberal reader of children's books, but even I found myself getting a little edgy during some of these passages. Alcock leaves no doubt in your mind that these statues' cruelty stems from their misunderstanding of what it is to be human. Just the same, it makes for rather harrowing reading.
What allows Ms. Alcock to be such a wonderful writer is that even when her books are dealing with such fantastical themes as statues coming to life, they still are grounded in a story of growth and understanding. Poppy begins this tale a friendless liar and, through her troubles, learns what it is to be a friend and to care about the people around you. She also sorts out the whole fibbing thing as well, which is probably a great relief to her peers. The descriptions in this book are particularly gripping as well. When Belladonna comes to life, you believe that this is EXACTLY how such a thing would happen. Of course statues wouldn't be able to talk. But they could understand us and learn to make do on their own. The more I think about it, the more I realize that this really is a kind of Frankenstein tale brought down to a child's level (horror elements left intact). If you're fine with that, feel free to recommend it to someone you know.
"The Stonewalkers" is definitely not gonna be for those kids who are so timid that "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" was too much for them. If you've a child who has a taste for children's books with a dark vein of truth to them, however, definitely give Vivien Alcock a try. Her books are consistently well-written and consistently interesting. Just don't expect to fall asleep at night quite as easily after reading one.
the waste of time.......2001-05-24
I did not like this book very much because it was confusing and very boring. I don't mean to be hurtful but it realy was a waste of time. Poppy Brown the main character who has a tendny to lie no one bleves her but emma her friend one of the staues ( Belladona) is struck by lighing and comes to life. she is nice at first but then she becomes mean and is hurting including Emma. what is Poppy going to do.
An awesome book!!!.......1998-12-12
I just finished this book called the Stonewalkers. I am ten years old. It is one of the best books that I have ever read. This book is about a person named Poppy Brown. She likes to talk to statues of stone. One day the statue got struk by lightning and comes alive. The only person that beleives her is her only friend Emma. They have to make sure that the statue doesn't dstroy anything. Poppy is a girl who tells many lies. Emma is a girl who believes Poppy .She is a good friend , except in one part of the book where she wants to die. I love the way Vivien Alcock describes the characters . She develops them in a way that you really feel for them. If you want to find out more , read this amazing book. I am going to read more books by this author. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes suspence, action, and terror.
The best!.......1997-12-14
One of the best books to be recomended to me! Great if you like mysteries.
