1 out of 5 stars Poor Service.......2005-08-12

I am very dissapointed in the service of Amazon. I put in the name of the book and was guided to the 5th edition instead of the latest version(6th). There was no way to verify the edition on line at the time of purchase. This appears to me to be a scam by Amazon to divest themselves of the old inventory. When I found the error and did additional research to obtain the ISBN number I found the 6th edition. Since then, the search in Amazon has been updated and both editions appear. Still no reference to editions but surprizingly the 5th edition is priced higher. Another part of the scam to trick buyers to buy the 5th edition because logic thinking would put the newer/latest edition at a higher price then the older obsolete 5th edition. When Amazon management was presented with the issue; my error, no can help you. Guess what, for basicly shipping charges of the two books, Amazon has lost my future business and the bad PR to all I talk to in the future. Sure hope the balance sheet improved due to the shipping charges.

Greatly Dissatisfied Customer

              Book Description

A critical examination of leadership theories past and present, Managing without Leadership argues that leadership as traditionally understood does not explain organizational functioning. Bounded by empiricist assumptions and methodology, and including a narrow theory of mind as symbol processor, leadership theories are unable to support their claims about leaders and their actions.

Drawing on coherentist epistemology, connectionism, and the theory of self-organizing dynamic systems, a naturalistic account of organizational functioning and organization design is explored that includes leaders as non-privileged agents in the cognitive fabric of organizational life.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introductory Coursebook.......2000-11-02

Chaisson and McMillan have succeeded in creating a textbook that works on many levels. First of all, the book makes a true effort to excite students about astronomy, as it starts out immediately with a view of the universe and its massive size. Secondly, the book is approachable, with optional "more precisely" sections that cover things in detail or with more mathematics. Finally, the book challenges a college student while still being accessible to bright middle-school students (I first used it at a summer camp, the Center for Talented Youth, and the entire class used the book to great success). In addition to the natural merits of the writing, which is wonderful, and a moderate amount of history, the book includes stunning pictures and a CD-ROM that contains the entire text of the book, animations, and all of the images. It's a superb way to have the contents anywhere you need them, and look at things in greater detail. This book should be highly recommended for educators, and I highly encourage them to give it a try and to use it in their classes.

                Book Description

A brief, introductory astronomy book designed for readers with little or no scientific background, A Beginner's Guide uses an exceptionally clear writing style. The authors present a broad view of astronomy without complex mathematics, yet the book discusses important concepts without simplification. The book's organization follows the popular and effective “Earth-Out” progression, starting with our planet and then moving through the solar system. A study of the Sun as a model star follows, then the book covers the Milky Way Galaxy, cosmology, and the universe as a whole. Because of its easy-to-read yet comprehensive coverage of astronomy, this book can serve as excellent reference material for those readers interested in learning about our universe.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Intro Astronomy Book.......2007-03-28

This textbook presents information about the Earth, solar system, and universe in a clear manner that avoids technical jargon while staying scientifically respectable. The author demonstrates the practical uses of mathematics throughout the book and the end of chapter questions challenge the reader's grasp of the material. It's a rarity for such a readable book to be written by a person with this author's impressive educational creditials. I would definitely recommend this text and any other written by Chaisson.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Textbook.......2001-03-01

For anyone who has a vague interest in astronomy, this would be the book to read. Albeit not entirely simple, this is a relatively straight forward book that uses excellent examples to explain difficult concepts. There are many charts and diagrams. How exactly does a black hole work? What's the difference between a nova and a supernova (not as simple as you might think)? Why do we get meteor showers? There is a bit of mathematics involved, but nothing too intimidating. This is an excellent textbook. Best of all, a CD-ROM is included with lots of multimedia content, study questions, and links to more sources. Avoid other dry textbooks and purchase this one.

                      Book Description

Love him or hate him, Triple H does what he wants, when he wants to do it. And now, for the first time anywhere, he tells you how he does it -- and how you can, too.

More than a personal account of life in and out of the ring, Making The Game: Triple H's Approach to a Better Body is Triple H's verbal and visual blueprint for building your body. The leader of Evolution discusses how "a jones for bodybuilding and a love for wrestling" morphed a skinny, 135-pound fourteen-year-old from Nashua, New Hampshire, into one of the biggest superstars ever to dominate World Wrestling Entertainment. But be warned -- the "Cerebral Assassin" has zero tolerance for anything less than a hundred percent effort. He's spent the past twenty years living by the philosophy that training results in improved strength and conditioning, self-discipline, and an ability to focus on setting goals. This book isn't for big mouths who'd rather exercise their egos than their deltoids.

Of course, even Triple H had help along the way. He didn't get to be "that damn good" without the support of a loving family. And over the years several bodybuilders (including world-renowned trainer Charles Glass) worked with him to develop the best training regimens. Their advice, plus hardcore commitment, helped Paul Levesque survive "The Hard Way In" through Walter "Killer" Kowalski's wrestling school in Malden, Massachusetts, and go on to become "Terra Ryzing" within Kowalski's International Wrestling Federation; enabled a "GUD" ("Geographically UnDesirable") to adjust to a difficult life on the road as "the French guy" in World Championship Wrestling; and gave "Hunter Hearst-Helmsley" the self-assurance to earn his stripes in WWE and eat something that literally made other up-and-comers squeal.

On the subject of food consumption, Making The Game imparts tips as essential as exercise is for burning off calories and adding on muscle. Triple H spends over two hundred days a year on the road, and his traveler's guide will help you find ideal meals even in fast-food restaurants. He also provides the template for a must-have training-and-meals diary. Triple H reveals the dietary plan that he claims stokes his furnace 24/7 -- the plan he believes is "the single biggest element" in transforming his physique.

Nevertheless, for a World Champion in WWE, it's as the saying goes: "No pain, no gain." That's why Making The Game breaks down and demonstrates the split-training workout program Triple H has embraced to achieve new levels of success in sculpting his body. Between drilling you with reps and sets, he relates in painstaking detail how training gave him the inner strength to shoulder the brunt of a controversial "Curtain Call" in the ring and, later, to elevate his position with Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock as one of the "Big Three" in WWE. Then, after breaking a sweat with Triple H reliving the fateful Raw events of May 2001 that left him with a torn quadricep muscle, you too can feel "The Triple H Burn," one of the exercises he endured through nine months of intense physical therapy to repair his leg that had been destroyed and resume a career most considered was "Game Over." Pain is temporary...but "The Game" is forever.

Besides offering step-by-step exercises for both novice bodybuilders and those looking to radically advance their workout, Making The Game weighs in on the science behind progressive-training resistance and rest-pause techniques; the significance of exercise form over volume; the truth behind achieving "six-pack abs"; the dangers of overtraining and "skullcrushing" exercises that risk injury; and how creativity can go a long way in your workout. Triple H sees it as his mission to provide the guidelines for you to follow in the months and years ahead. And if there's one thing he knows how to do, it's succeed.

It's time to stop playing The Game...and time to start Making The Game.

4 out of 5 stars The life of a modern WWE wrestler.......2007-06-12

He gives pretty good tips and it is a pretty good read overall. He had a good physique that peaked out at Wrestlemania 18 after he came from his Quad tear but slowly but surely degraded into what we last saw after NWR 07 when he tore his other quad. When your sleep, nutrition, work outs and recuperation time get all screwed due to their travel schedule and pounding they take in the ring on regular basis...it all adds up. If you go to bodybuilding.com, HHH is interviewed on ProBodybuidling weekly and he talks in depth about it.

This book gives you a good insight as to what Paul Levesque has gone through and it also confirms what both the Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair biography's have said: Behind that curtain is a very cut throat and a very politically driven enviroment. Hogan went through it with Russo, Flair went through it with Bischoff and HHH went through it when he was courting Stephanie from those in WWE upper management.

It gives a basic beginners workout routine for those just starting to workout and it gives good ideas on how to eat as healthy as possible when traveling frequently. On the wrestling business portion of it, it shows how fickle management can be and who they push can change like the weather. For anybody looking to break into the business, this book is a pretty good guide as to what to expect and what can happen.

A common theme of these bio's are what they had to go through to reach the upper echelon and what they've learned along the way. We can learn from their experiences as to what not to do and what to do when life throws you a curve ball. For anybody who ever wondered what their favorite wrestler is like outside of the ring and what triumphs and tribulations they've gone through, then these are great reads. It really humanizes them and gives you a greater appreciation for them.

1 out of 5 stars Androgenic Anabolic Steroid Abuse Made HHH Big.......2006-11-26

AAS (androgenic anabolic steroids) and a lot of high weight low-rep weightlifting made HHH the big man he is today. When you follow the advice of a bodybuilder, remember that illegal steroid use is necessary to ever look like these guys. Use of these drugs, and use of many other cocktails of "stacked" drugs by guys like HHH include growth hormone, insulin (very dangerous), combinations of testosterone and its derivatives and anti-estrogenic drugs and many others. If you don't go broke right away, don't get addicted, develop a myriad of health problems later including liver, kidney and heart damage, and you can stay out of jail, maybe these drugs are for you. Just remember that when the hemorrhoids get bad enough, you too will be standing in the dugout like Mark McGuire, unable to sit down because it hurts too much.

If you want a book about health or achieving a healthy body, don't read this one.

4 out of 5 stars Triple H is THE GAME.......2006-04-28

This book is a rather good read, even though it does leave a lot out. Triple H is one of my all time favorites, only being outshown by Undertaker. I wish that this book would have went more in-depth into his life, his relationship with Chyna, his friendships, etc. But Triple H is not overweight like some reviewers have said. Did you see the pictures in the book? The man is rock solid. Give him a break, he's busy with expecting a child. Obviously some people haven't went through a pregnancy with their wives.

1 out of 5 stars Time to play the OVERWEIGHT game........2006-03-23

Have any of you guys actually seen triple h lately. The man is obese. I have to admit before he left on his four-month vacation, back in June 2005, he was in pretty good shape. Then he came back to the WWE on their special homecoming episode in October 2005 and man he was huge. It looked like he was the one pregnant, not Stephanie McMahon. It seems like triple h has been having too many burgers and not lifting enough weights.

It seems to me, that the only thing bigger then triple h's ever-increasing waistline is his gigantic nose. I think it's wrong for a guy like triple h to write a bodybuilding book since he is so terribly overweight, its like Stevie Wonder writing a book about bird watching. He needs to spend more time in the gym and less time at the WWE buffet table.

Overall, I did not like this book because I have no interest in bodybuilding what so ever and I'm straight. By the way the cover to this book is so GAY!

                      4 out of 5 stars triple h's approach to a better body.......2006-03-10

                      Book Description

Genki outlines in 23 structured lessons all the fundamentals of the Japanese language. Abundantly illustrated and containing a wide variety of exercises, Genki is sure to bring vigor to your classroom! Though primarily meant for use in college-level classes, it is also a good guide for independent learners and is a nice resource book for teachers of Japanese. Genki's authors teach at Kansai Gaidai University, which hosts the largest number of North American students spending their junior year in Japan.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre for adults.......2007-09-26

This book may be good for young students who anticipate homestays (and I'm skeptical even about that, for reasons below), but if you're an adult you may find this book excruciating. I recently moved to Japan, and finally determined to take some private lessons to get a more systematic grasp on the language than I have had hitherto. My school uses this text. I can't compare it with other college-style textbooks, which may mostly suffer from the same problems, but among the issues I have with it are:

@ The framing scenario is of foreign students living in homestays and interacting with their homestay families and with each other; there is also a lot of school-related vocabluary. This is largely irrelevant for an adult's experience. It is useless for business, BTW (though in my own case, I was looking more for daily life vocabulary and situations than business).

@ Even within this scenario, the book doesn't teach you how to really have conversation -- all classmates address each other with polite "-masu" form verbs. In real life, this would be distant or even rude with your pals. (Moreover, on the accompanying tapes female gaijin characters like "Mary" and "Sue" address their classmates and homestay parents in that saccharine, squeaky little-girl voice that is normally used by shop staff and female announcers on infomercials, not people talking to friends or family.)

@ In Japan, it is very rare for people to mirror back to you what you say, or for it to be appropriate for you to mirror back to them. This is especially true if your main interactions are with people in shops, where they will use a lot of "keigo" (honorific speech) or other specialized formulas. Simple example: A waitress will bring stuff to your table and ask "Yoroshii desu ka?" (Is that OK?), you don't answer back "Hai, yoroshii desu." Even saying goodbye is highly context dependent; e.g. when someone says "Sorry I'm being so rude as to leave before you," even if you can catch the Japanese phrase you will look like an idiot if you reply symmetrically (been there, done that). This book doesn't give you a clue about dealing with such situations, nor help you to unravel what Japanese people are saying to you when they respond to your questions or remarks. All dialogues and exercises are based on the mirroring principle (as well as indiscriminate use of "wa", the topic particle). So it's pretty useless for practical purposes -- unless you plan to use Japanese in class only.

@ While it's a plus that reading & writing practice are integrated into the text, the reading selections in early chapters are devoid of imagination. After several chapters of reading stuff like "Are you OK? I am fine. It's cold here in Japan. I took some pictures, studied Japanese and took a bath. My father is nice, but very busy," and so on, you just want to scream.

@ Although the publication date is 1999, at which time a dot-com boom was beginning even in Japan, this book is snail-mail all the way: you spend time learning about stamps and postcards, but there isn't anything about email, the Internet or texting. (Forget also about DVDs -- people watch videos.)

@ Japanese verb conjugation has a wonderful regularity, in that almost every verb has a set of stems that are based variously on -A-, -I-, -U-, -E- and -O- (e.g., negative, polite, dictionary, causative and "let's" forms, respectively). This tracks the order of Japanese vowels in the kana writing systems, so it's easy to remember. However, "Genki"'s presentation of verbs obliterates this useful pattern (see, e.g. conjugation chart @ 344 of Vol. I).

Like most students of Japanese, I've stocked up on a shelfload of other books of varying usefulness. (Two of the best, Rita Lampkin's "Japanese: Verbs and Essentials of Grammar" and Jay Rubin's "Making Sense of Japanese", unfortunately are exclusively in Roman characters, or nearly so.) You will definitely need to to the same (or at least half a shelfload) if you use this book. But not getting bored by the boook will be a bigger challenge if you're older than 22. One possible tip might be to look for a book that has at least one gaijin co-author. This one is written entirely by Japanese authors; it could have benefitted from the perspective of a formerly-puzzled foreigner.

                      5 out of 5 stars Genki 1.......2007-08-21

I am teaching myself Japanese and I really like this text. This book has a good collection of vocabulary and is very easy to follow. I recommend this book to everyone. It is excellent! My Japanese friend is very impressed with what I was able to teach myself. I feel very confident in what I have learned. The student CD that accompanies is a little lacking, though. It only covers dialogue and vocab for the book (and workbook), when I really wish the CD included more from the textbook. I also recommend getting the workbook for more practice. You should know that you need the student CD to use the workbook. Genki 1 has to be the best text out there for learning Japanese!

5 out of 5 stars Well Thought-Out Beginners' Course for English Speakers.......2007-05-23

Japanese is a very difficult language for English speakers to learn. If you've learned some French or Spanish (as I have), forget about it! Japanese is many times more difficult. That being said, Japanese is also more interesting, in that it has a completely different structure and forces you to think differently.

Genki does a good job of presenting Japanese is an orderly fashion. The authors are all native Japanese speakers, and there are a few places where they make mistakes in English, but those small errors do not take away from the text.

Genki could use a few more sample Japanese sentences, though. For example, when they present a new pattern, they often provide just a couple of examples when ten or twelve would be better. I suppose they assume (correctly) that this book will mostly be used in a classroom setting, and that the teacher will provide additional material.

In the end, Genki is a good textbook, but you will need more help if you are going to learn to speak Japanese. That is not the fault of the authors, it is just the way it is.

5 out of 5 stars Read this is you are concerned with the JLPT Tests.......2007-04-30

I am writing this review as a person who is concerned with passing the JLPT tests and finding study materials. Of ocurse as everyone else wants, I also want to learn Japanese as well. After having passed all the exams and having an understanding of what each requires and being a State university (college) student I can say this book si great. Challenging but great.

THE Genki 1 IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO PASS JLPT TEST 4 or 3!!!

                      Let me repeat that again

THE Genki 1 IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO PASS JLPT TEST 4 or 3!!!

While it can be a help, it simply does not go over enough information to insure passing.

THE GENKI BOOK 1 and THE GENKI BOOK 2 DO NOT INSURE PASSING LEVEL 3 or 4!!!

                      let me repeat tht again

THE GENKI BOOK 1 and THE GENKI BOOK 2 DO NOT INSURE PASSING LEVEL 3 or 4!!!

The other reviewers who write that it does would have needed other knowledge NOT included in these books or with the cds. You simply need more information. about it. The best book for passing the JLPT levels 3 and 4 do not exist. you need a thorough understanding which school can provide or multiple resources for the home study fanatic.

I normally do not review. but would hate to see people just buying this and then getting to the examinations and not knowing a thing that was going on. Be careful what you read.

THe book is great but if one of your goals is passing JLPT 4 or 3 this is not sufficuent alone.

Thank you and good luck to you!

5 out of 5 stars I've purchased all the rest this one is the best........2007-03-26

Ok, I've spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on Japanaese language learning materials. Books, software, CDs etc. Some of them good some of them bad. Genki is the only one that has really put it all together for me. It explains the concepts and explains them well. When you are done reading the grammar sections it just starts to make sense.

This is a great stepping stone for those that are wanting to learn Japanese as part of a fuller understanding of the language. If you are looking for a quick read for a weekend in Tokyo this book isn't for you.

Pick up the workbook and CD if you are going to be doing this solo. It'll help out like you wouldn't believe.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for young teen reader - entertains with some knowledge.......2005-09-13

The story begins on an ocean platform a few hundred miles east of Bermuda - not far from the "Bermuda Triangle" - where young Tom Swift, Jr., his sister, and friends are helping the Captain and scientists test Tom's father's stable sea platform. It's supposed to be a vacation for the young ones, but soon the platform is attacked by an unkown force, and Tom and his friends use a mini-sub and diving gear to investigate. What they discover leads to more action and adventure, all suitable for children.
Tom Swift books are great for young teenagers to get some reading practice in an entertaining way that's educational too. While the portions of the plot relating to the villain follow the usual formula, designed to build suspense and keep the reader interested, the science and diverse locations (under the ocean, in this case) are interesting to the curious young mind and somewhat educational. The author threw in some real facts about oceanography and diving, and reasonable speculation about near-future technology. The background details about Bermuda and the Atlantic are accurate, as well.
I read some of the Tom Swift books published in the 1950s when I was a kid, and even one of the really old series from the 1920s out of curiosity. Fortunately, they keep getting better.
